About this property

Water view - huge lawn area for croquet. Shoulder season 2025 open!

'Sand Palace' is a wonderful place for a family or two to enjoy a kid friendly vacation. Relax on the open deck enjoying the Madaket Harbor view and sunsets while the kids play in the large backyard. The nearest beach with a life guard in season is a five minute bike ride or ten minute walk, and there are numerous other beaches easily available by bike, car, or shuttle bus. The frequent shuttle stops across the street from the back yard.

Since the entire island is a beach you wake up and decide whether you want surf or calm for the day. Upon returning from a beach, museum, or exploring kind of day you wash off in the enclosed outdoor shower or clean your sandy feet on the back deck, and drop your towels in the mudroom/laundry room.

From there you enter the spacious new eat in kitchen with beautiful granite counter tops and wood floor. The living room has a view of Madaket Harbor and ocean beyond and lets onto the front deck. Downstairs the master bedroom has a queen bed and TV. The downstairs guest room has a queen and single bed.

The open stairway leads upstairs to three rooms and a bathroom. The 'bunk room' has two extra long singles and a water view, while the guest room has a queen and a single also with a water view. There is also a children's play or sleep area known as 'the cloud room.'

In the evening there are games to be played on the lawn, ping-pong in the basement, sunsets to be enjoyed, beach picnics, numerous restaurants for dinner or cocktails, two movie theaters, or just board games and reading at home.

Located a ten minute drive or 20 minute bike ride on a protected bike path from 'downtown,' the house is approached from the Madaket Road but fronts on Washington Avenue which in spite of its grand name is a dirt road largely occupied by the resident rabbits.

Magical in Madaket

We had an amazing stay at the Sand Palace. We have been coming to Nantucket for 17 years and had always stayed at the Cliffside Beach Club. We decided to change it up this year and try renting a place. We feel so lucky to have booked Sand Castle. The location was perfect - a 5 minute bike ride from Madaket beach and Millie’s (2 of our kids faves). It has a great lawn for playing games and a basement with a ping pong table where the family tournament happened all week. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and sunset on the porch was a GREAT treat. Larry is the best host. Always in communication and made everything really simple. There are plenty of bikes and beach chairs. Bikes are good beach bikes or for tooling around the island on Nantucket’s great bike paths. The bus to town is just down the road- so convenient or you could bike in. It was a great family vacation.

Spacious

This house is great. It is really well laid out - very spacious - so no one feels like they are on top of one-another. The yard is also a great size and you can see the water from the front porch! We were here for work, but it made for a great place to rest our heads. The homeowner is really sweet too - you could feel the sense of family in the home. Would absolutely stay again.

Fall Family Fun

We enjoyed 2 weeks with family at the Sand Palace this fall. There was plenty of room for indoor and outdoor activities. The house is well cared for. The owner is very responsive and provided lots of information on Nantucket and ideas for things to do while we visited. We very much appreciated that extra touch. Would certainly recommend to others.

The Sand Palace located on Nantucket Island, MA

This is a family-friendly "home away from home," with such memorable amenities as the Madaket Beach, Millie's restaurant, and shuttle service into town. Larry makes you feel like you're a friend of the family with his notes and emails before and during your stay. With 2 bedrooms and a bath both located on the first and second floors, you can have the privacy you need and have your own routine. We had my daughter and husband with their two small children on the first floor closest to the kitchen and living room. My adult son and I took the upstairs rooms. I was able to get up early and either take a bike (located in the garage) ride or take the shuttle across the street into town to enjoy breakfast at The Fog Island Café! We've been going to Nantucket for over 25 years and this is our favorite place to stay. We enjoyed eating at The Brotherhood of Thieves Pub, Downey Flake, Fuscaro's, Back Yard BBQ, and The Lobster Trap. We meandered over the cobblestone streets to enjoy shopping as well as ice cream at the Juice Bar and fudge at Aunt Leah's. . We also enjoyed the kid-friendly restaurant at Jettie's Beach and music and drinks at the Cisco Brewery. A bonus was my daughter meeting Jill from Odd Mom Out standing in line at the Juice Bar! Thanks Nancy and Larry for a very memorable experience! Carla Phillips Katz

Perfect Nantucket Getaway

We have been renting Sand Palace now for 10 years, and it has remained our favorite place to return to. It is a beautiful home with all of the amenities a family could need. We also had an adults only long-weekend one year and it was perfect for that as well. The interior is beautiful, but comfortable, and is large enough for a large family or two small families. The house is right on the bike path, with water views, and is a short walk to the beach. Our family regularly walks to the beach and Millie's market. We had one week when Sand Palace wasn't available and rented a different house - and it only confirmed for us that Sand Palace is the only house we want to stay in on the island. We highly recommend this property!

Great week in Madaket

We had a wonderful week staying at Sand Palace, and thoroughly enjoyed the location in Madaket. Larry was a great resource for helping us learn about all that Nantucket has to offer. The house was very clean and comfortable, and well stocked with all the gear you need for the beach. My family is looking forward to returning!

Perfect stay in Madaket!

We have rented many homes over the years, but Sand Palace exceeded even our highest expectations. The critical difference is that the home does not present as a rental - there are personal touches, big rooms with nice linens and furniture, and a very comfortable feel. The owners obviously take great pride in this house and are extremely helpful and attentive in the process. Some of the highlights for our group of 2 families with children (ages 7-12): The basement, impeccably organized, stocked with toys and beach equipment. The location, on Madaket Road but set way back, with an awesomely huge lawn for whiffle ball and bocce. The perfect view of the famed Madaket sunset from the quiet and private front porch. And the little touches - the big bucket at the door for washing sandy feet, the plush beach towels for guests to use, and the crazy awesome first floor shower that made me not want to go home. This place is awesome. We will be back!

The Sand Castle was a royal vacation

Thanks to Larry and Nancy. We will never forget our vacation. The house was fantastic -- clean, spacious and roomy, the beds were very comfortable and the flow of the house just made for a lovely and relaxing time. We loved the deck off the back of the house. So close to the beach and the bike paths and of course, Millie's. I've done yearly trips to Madaket but this was the first time we ever stayed at the Sand Castle. Now we won't stay anywhere else.

Thank You So Much!!

Thank you Larry and Nancy for all your hospitality during our visit. Your house is perfect and the island is perfect. It was a vacation that my family will never forget!! The house has everything you will need for your vacation. You actually don't even need a vehicle! The bus stop is right outside and you can also walk to the beach, harbor, and Millie's resturant very easily. There is a bike/walking path that you can use to access the whole island. I recommend using the bus to go into town. Parking is very limited in town. The bus stop in town is one block from the ferry terminal, right in the middle of the town. For 2 bucks a person (one way) it is a no brainer. The house also has a HUGE back yard. Our kids ran around, played croquet, and simply enjoyed themselves there. You simply can't go wrong with Sand Castle. (Also, be sure to change the flag everyday and try the outdoor shower, it is really great!)

Wonderful place to vacation.

Sand Castle is an easy 1/2 mile walk to Madaket beach-one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. You can walk for miles along the shoreline. The house is great. It has an airy, well-stocked kitchen, lots of games and books, and an easy flow for visiting. We loved the view off the porch where we would eat breakfast in the morning watching Hither creek and Madaket harbor, and then gathered there again to toast lovely sunsets and another glorious day on Nantucket. Larry is a great host and made sure we had everything we needed to make the stay pleasant. The bus stops right at the corner by the house, so it was easy for people to get in & out of town. We used our bikes on the bike path that runs right past the house to get into town or go off exploring. Sand Castle has a great location and is well-appointed for a comfortable stay. We hope to return soon.

Sand Palace

Our stay at Sand Palace was special for a number of reasons. First, the house was very comfortable and everything one would want for a vacation was supplied by the considerate owners, Larry and Nancy. The attention to detail and concern for your enjoyment was most appreciated. The location of the house was not only convenient to the beach, but we so enjoyed the lovely views from the front deck looking out towards the water and wildlife. The week provided us with many wonderful memories with family and friends. It was truly a wonderful week and we look forward to returning one day. Thank you to our most considerate hosts, Larry and Nancy.

Sand Palace in Madaket

The Sand Palace was the perfect home for our week-long three-generation family vacation. We were 10 people in four family units, housed very comfortably in this compact but spacious home. The kitchen is nicely remodeled. The furnishings all around are clean, and everything is well maintained. The basement is a gold-mine of toys, all available for use: ping pong table, beach chairs, kites, lawn games, sand toys, etc., etc. Also lots of baby equipment such as high chairs and strollers. Owners are thoughtful and generous. The shuttle was one of the great features of our stay. It stops right across the street and will take you to town, then on across the island if you want to go. We bought week-long passes and got a lot of use from them. You can also place your bike on the rack. We didn't know Nantucket when we made this reservation, but Madaket was a lucky choice. It is the "unfancy" end of the island, where homes are of reasonable size and people do their own gardening. No trophy homes out here. The beach was fabulous, and the bay also. Next time we will bring kayaks and put in at Madaket Bay. We rented bikes for the week, and could get everywhere on them (with supplement from the shuttle bus). Try the bike shop off the main drag on the way to the children's beach; they were generous and helpful. We hope to enjoy another week at the Sand Palace in the near future.

2 perfect vacations at Sand Palace

We have stayed at the Sand Palace the past 2 summers and have been very pleased. The house is in excellent condition and very well supplied. The setting is excellent- immediate access to the shuttle and bikepath, but far enough back from the road to avoid any traffic noise. (For us, the shuttle is one of the great features of Madaket; it whisks you from the peace and quiet of Madaket to the activities and restaurants of the town with no hassle, through great scenery.)The large yard is nice, with rabbits always on the scene. The view from the living room of Hither Creek and Madaket Harbor is very pretty (better than the website photos suggest), with great sunset views. We were concerned to learn that Madaket Beach would be closed this summer, but things worked out fine, as Smiths Point beach is nicer than ever, and is a quick bike ride or a manageable walk. Numerous other beaches also are easily reachable as well. Finally, the owners of Sand Palace are very efficient and thoughtful. We've rented many vacation houses in many places, and at higher prices, but Sand Palace is the best!

About the host

Hosted by Larry or Nancy D'Oench

Host profile image
My husband and I call the house 'Sand Palace' named after a movie theatre in the British Virgin Islands. This is the kind of place children and grandchildren love. Lots to do, good location, water view.

Why they chose this property

There's so much to do for all ages... we like biking and sunset watching from our deck, guests like to hike to the views from nearby open land, little kids like to catch turtles, bigger ones enjoy riding the shuttle bus or bike into town, and everyone loves the beaches. Being an island surrounded by beaches you can pretty much use any beach you can get to.

What makes this property unique

Water view, large yard for games, bike path to beach or town just across the street, shuttle to town ditto.
Large unfinished basement with a ping pong table and card table available for the odd rainy day.
