About this property

Luxury country hideaway on the fringes of Start Bay

Cotmore Farm offers a warm welcome to discerning holidaymakers in three sympathetically and ecologically restored farm buildings, recently converted into stylish and luxurious holiday accommodation, and finished to the very highest specifications in natural and where possible local materials. Rose Cottage is situated at the heart of the farm, hidden behind a stone wall covered in climbing roses, clematis and honeysuckle, and reached through an arched gateway. Its jewel-like garden is completely private, filled with trees, shrubs and fragrant climbers, with a small herb garden for guests' use, a barbecue, and a patio offering glimpses of the sea at Beesands to the southeast. Three sets of French doors give access to the cottage, filling it with light whatever the weather. Inside, heated slate floors, individually controllable in each room, and stylish oak furniture create an atmosphere of comfortable luxury. From the entrance hall, a rustic oak door leads right to the bedroom, where an oak-framed double bed with pocket-sprung mattress is flanked by oak bedside tables with stay-cool LED reading lamps. Opposite the bed an alcove hides a large vanity basin and mirrored cabinet. Next to that, an obscure glazed door leads to the marble tiled bathroom, with its giant walk-in shower. French doors mean you can walk straight out from the bedroom to take breakfast in the cottage's private garden. To the left of the hall is the living room and the compact but fully equipped oak kitchen. A comfy leather sofa and flat screen TV add further pampering touches, while an efficient woodburner ensures the cottage stays snug whatever the weather. Here too French doors allow direct access to the garden, a haven for the birds that regularly visit our many feeders – we even supply a guide so you can identify them yourself. Foodies will appreciate the proximity of some of Devon's finest gastropubs and restaurants, while walkers (and their dogs) will not want for new routes to explore, with direct access from the farm gate to a network of quiet lanes, footpaths, bridleways, and the superb South Devon Coast Path.

Beautiful little cottage

Gorgeous, well equipped converted barn with everything needed for a comfy stay. Piers and Sue are excellent hosts, lovely and friendly but not intrusive. Lots to see and do in the area, lovely nearby walks and good independent shops a little further afield.

A lovely break in rose cottage Cotmore farm

We had a lovely week away at the beautiful Cotmore farm. Piers and sue and their lovely family set the scene with their lovely cottage where we stayed and were always on hand with ideas of places to visit in the surrounding areas. Loved the chickens and the black pigs along with Jack the family dog. Would thoroughly recommend and hope to go back

Great location and lovely property. Tranquil and well equipped.

We had a marvellous stay at Rose Cottage. It is set in a beautiful location and is hard to beat in its ease of access for the local beauty spots. We made friends with the animals on the farm and had fun feeding the piggies. The property itself is well equipped and has a pretty garden area where you can enjoy a glass or two in the evening. Piers and Sue are excellent hosts - friendly, helpful and discreet. The welcome pack, including delicious eggs from their own hens, was very much appreciated and we thoroughly enjoyed Piers' home-produced bacon and sausages. Highly recommended! We'll be scheduling a return ASAP.

A comfortable and cosy retreat

We had a very enjoyable and relaxing week in Rose Cottage and a warm welcome from the owners. Comfortable accommodation of a high standard, the cottage felt quite secluded, despite being part of a group of farm buildings and holiday cottages.

Delightful retreat

Perfect for a Spring break - cozy cottage with a sunny, sheltered garden. We walked the SW coast path most days and enjoyed coming back to the comfort of Rose Cottage. Lots of places to eat out but the kitchen has everything you need to make your own meals. The welcome basket had some lovely treats in it - the farm's own eggs are a must, as is the pancetta. We loved just sitting in the garden watching the birds and checking on the lambs as we went out each day! Piers and Sue are very welcoming with a very light touch - you know they are around if you need them but they are not intrusive. It was a very relaxed holiday and we would certainly return.

Excellent cottage in a wonderful landscape

Rose Cottage provides everything you could want for a relaxing and peaceful retreat and to enjoy the quiet and exceptionally beautiful Devon countryside. The cottage is brillant with it's own small garden. The accommodation is very clean and well equipped. Upon arriving Piers was there to warmly welcome us and to make us familiar with the equipment. Beautiful welcome basket was very much appreciated by us. We spent a lot of time biking around with our pedelecs in the area following Piers' tips for extraordinary spots in the surroundings, such as Salcomb, Dartmouth, Totnes, Beesands, Start Point , Gara Rock.... All in all a wonderful cottage, friendly hosts, who were at hand when needed. Thank you very much for two lovely weeks in Devon, Sue and Piers !

Excellent cottage, restful and comfortable

Rose Cottage is exceptional - one of the best self catering cottages we have ever stayed in which is why it has been our second time here. It is thoughtfully designed, beautifully clean, has comfort and luxury in mind and generously kitted out with everything you could need. Dual view from bright sitting room onto private patio garden. We loved the wonderful log-burner and the shower, unlike the previous reviewer, we had no problems whatsoever with hot water in cottage. Lovely for a holiday as you really can get away from it all in this cottage (you could spend hours looking at the amazing variety of birds coming to the bird-feeder in the garden from the sitting room) or get out and explore this beautiful, peaceful part of Devon with its local beaches, coastal walks, restaurants, seafood. Thank you to Sue and Piers for the basket gift of local food, the fresh eggs from the farm hens and their attention to us. We are likely to holiday here again.

Lovely Location.

The cottage is on a small farm in a sleepy Devon back road. The owner Piers gave us a really friendly welcome with a log fire waiting in the hearth. The site is quiet and very pretty and has a sea view, of distant Beesands. There was a welcome hamper full of goodies and milk in the fridge for a warming cuppa. There is every thing you need in the kitchen and it has underfloor heating throughout. all though the thermostat was hard to fathom out. The big plus is the cottage is dog friendly as is the local beach and a few local pubs. Don't forget to fill the bird feeders and you will not be disappointed, as an RSPB member I already took some and the little guys came from far and wide. The bed is comfortable and the morning sun is lovely through the french door adds a bit of romance to the little place. I have a partial disability and did find the shower design was a little hard to step into, it could do with a grab rail to help get you in and out. The shower is ok, but to get it hot you forgo pressure and the kitchen tap water was tepid most of the time, meaning you had to boil the kettle for washing up. It does have a dishwasher but for just the two of us it isn't worth putting on. The area is very good with Beesands just down the road, Kingsbridge a few miles away and the pretty Devon coast all very close. All in all a good one here.

Beautiful relaxing stay with impeccable hosts

My husband and I had a wonderful short break. Burning log fires in the evenings, beautifully quiet nights and crisp icy mornings with the sun rising over the sea in the distance. We walked to the beautiful south pool for a brilliant sunday lunch and visited many wonderful sites along the southwest coastline. Piers and Sue were more than helpful and their home-reared bacon was delicious! Thank you for a relaxing break.

Relaxing, enjoyable and very clean. Nice to be able to snuggle up in front of a roaring log fire.

Beautiful location set close to the beach and surrounding villages. Many pubs within walking distance as well as entertainment, fishing and walks with the dogs who loved every bit of it. Very friendly dog (Jack) belonging to the owners and a wonderful welcome basket as soon as we walked in. Couldn't have done enough for us. We would highly recommend this location whether you have dogs or not, everyone is made very welcome, Duncan & Julieann Alfie, Archie & Keeshia.

Beautiful cottage in glorious surroundings

We stayed in Rose Cottage for three nights during a very blustery November weekend. The cottage is beautifully converted, with every attention paid to the details which makes it a truly luxury stay. From the extremely well stocked welcome hamper to the underfloor heating, you simply could not wish for more. We will very definitely return............

About the host

Hosted by Piers Spence

Host profile image
Cotmore is a 17th century house surrounded by 13 acres of land that was already a farm more than a thousand years ago. It is a welcoming place that is home to Piers, Sue, various visiting student offspring, some cats, and a small, friendly, bouncy dog called Jack. We moved here from south-east England in 2011, with the aim of establishing an ecologically sustainable holiday experience such as we remember from our own childhoods in Ireland and Cornwall respectively. We have painstakingly converted stone barns and outbuildings to deliver stylish and luxurious self-catering accommodation at the heart of the farm. As well as horses, we keep Large Black pigs, Shetland sheep, and free-range chickens and ducks, all of which provide a plentiful supply of eggs, sausages, bacon and hams that we are happy to share with holiday guests. And, living just a mile from the spectacular south Devon coast, we take full advantage of our fabulous seaside location to walk, swim, cycle, surf and kayak.
