About this property

Lovely country house, walking distance to Montefrio, with private, gated pool

Surrounded by olive groves, this lovely Andalucian country house is just a 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk (through olive groves and then a well lit, wide pavement) from Montefrio with its many shops, bars and restaurants, two beautiful churches and a castle that perches dramatically above the pretty white-washed town. Situated down a well-maintained track (absolutely no need for a 4x4), this light, airy and comfortable house sits centrally in its level two acres (fenced and gated) and is secluded but not at all isolated.

On the ground floor there is one double bedroom; a bathroom; and a large, open plan, ‘L’ shaped room with well-equipped kitchen, sitting room area with doors onto the terrace, two sofas and a wood burner, and a large dining area also with doors onto the terrace.

On the first floor there are three further bedrooms: one with a super-king sized bed and ensuite bathroom; one with a double bed; and one with twin beds (that can be pushed together if required). There is also a family bathroom on this floor.

The house is equipped with crisp, white linens, all bedrooms have fans and there is heating if you are visiting in the winter months when the evenings are chilly.

In the vast garage, accessed via the house or the terrace, there is a washing machine.

Outside, there is an enormous terrace with a shaded area for dining. From the terrace, steps (gated for safety) lead up to a raised pool area with further terracing, 8 sun loungers and a shaded area. There are lovely views of the olive-studded surrounding hills from the pool terrace which is sun-soaked from dawn until dusk.

There's a cherry and a persimmon tree on the large terrace which provide shade when the sun gets too much; or retreat to the hammock in the shade of the substantial trees at the side of the house; the porch provides a wonderfully sunny spot for early morning breakfasts in spring time but is otherwise a fabulously cool place to sit with a good book or a cup of coffee.

The area immediately around the house provides a pretty, neat and well maintained garden and the remainder of the land the house sits on is rural and well-used by a Spanish neighbour, when the house is not occupied.

To one side, close to the kitchen window (handy for passing out beers and sausages), there is a stone-built barbeque in a shady spot under the trees.

Beyond the pool area there are fruit and nut trees and a meadow area, smothered in wild flowers in springtime and early summer.

The delights of Montefrio, lazing by the pool or walking the many fabulous routes in this area may well take up all your time. However, the house is also perfectly located to explore Andalucia: lively Granada and the famous Alhambra is less than an hour away; historic Seville, with its many attractions, including its pretty, flower-bedecked Jewish quarter, and equally historic Cordoba, with its beautiful Mezquita, are both an easy day trip either by train or car. Skiing in the Sierra Nevada is possible within an hour and a half; and if you MUST have a beach, you’re spoilt for choice on the south coast (1 hr 30 mins) or, much closer to home, there’s the soft, sandy beach at Iznajar Lake (30 mins) where you can also take out a canoe or pedalo. You’ll find golf easily accessible near Granada, a wolf sanctuary at Antequerra, along with the El Torcal Nature Reserve, and there’s a chocolate factory to visit at Rute - all just a taster of what the area has to offer.

Good for getting away from it all

A very lovely house with plenty of space for two families and a great pool. A short but dusty and steep walk to town - defo wear flats! Very friendly town with nice cafes and brasseries and small food shops. The mirador is very worth the short drive. We purposely didn’t want much to do but it was a great location for visiting Granada (we did twice - for great food, to the Alhambra and back for an evening to watch the flamenco ballet). Priegot de Córdoba was also worth a visit. The only downside (and we got used to it) was some very vocal dogs during the night in neighbouring compounds - take earplugs!

Wonderful Villa Puente Romano

My wife and I and our 3 teenagers had a wonderful two weeks at Villa Puente Romana in August 2024. Montefrio’s Ventolera festival was on so we went along the Wednesday night for some food at the fairground (Recinto Ferial). There were fireworks at midnight followed by show from an Andalucian band ‘La Tentacion’. I think we were the only british people there! Food shopping was done at Supermercados Dia. Restaurante El Pregonero was excellent with lovely views of the Castillo de Montefrio above us. Highlights: Granada old town (Severo Ochoa carpark) Capella Real where you can go down into the crypt and see the coffins and Ferdinand and Isabella and their daughter Joanna ‘la Loca’ The majestic Alhambra (Alhambra carpark). After visiting the Alhambra there was an easy walk downhill to the old town where we had a late lunch before catching a number 32 bus at Plaza Isabel la Católica back to the Alhambra Cordoba Cathedral/Mosque (La Ribera carpark). Villa Puente Romana was perfect for our family who all loved the swimming pool. Clare and Marc were very helpful and managed to source a Table Tennis Table for us to rent. We placed it in the shade by the BBQ and had great fun playing ping pong there! My favourite time was breakfast by the pool looking at the wonderful surrounding countryside and watching a family of spectacular golden orioles in the nearby treetops!

Great villa and pool near Montefrio

Spacious villa and pool were as described on website. We had a great week spent mostly by the pool, with a day trip to the Alhambra (which is highly recommended - book in advance). Diane & Chibby met us in Montefrio, showed us the villa, and were really helpful throughout our stay. Beds were very comfortable, certainly better than other villas I have rented. With daytime temperatures over 30c, some bedrooms were rather hot at night. The fans helped, but air conditioning would have added to the wow factor. Overall, a great 4 bedroom villa with a larger than average pool. Definitely worth a 5 star rating.

MAISON

Nous avons apprécié la maison au milieu des oliviers, chambres confortables et parties communes agréables, Bon accueil par Diana et son mari. Juste le petit chemin d'accès qui pourrait être amélioré. Des bons souvenirs pour nous tous.

A wonderful friend and family holiday. Lovely relaxing time by the pool cooking and eating late into

Property had everything we needed and any problems or questions quickly answered. Rural location suited us fine . You need a car as walking into town is not realy a possibility due to windy road location. Plenty of places to eat but favourite for quality and quantity was Casablanca.

Perfect family friendly holiday home near some wonderful cultural sites and very friendly locals

We enjoyed a fantastic week of sunshine, sightseeing and best of all lazing around by the pool. The villa was perfect for our family we could eat in or drive to nearby Montefrio with lots of choice of restaurants. There was plenty of culture and sightseeing when we had recharged our batteries and lots of help on hand from the locals whenever we wanted advice which was great as our Spanish was very limited. The castle and church of Montefrio are fascinating and Granada is close by if you want more but make sure you book well in advance online and take photo ID with you if you plan on visiting the alhambra palace. The owner was in regular contact to make sure everything was sorted for our stay and Diane and Chibby were a brilliant help meeting us and providing peace of mind if we needed any help.

Lovely escape in the sunshine

Really well equipped, naturally cool villa situated in peace and quiet. We were met by Diane and her husband Chibby who were incredibly welcoming and clearly keep the villa in great shape on behalf of the owner Clare who again was really helpful in checking we had every piece of information we needed to have a successful holiday. We were not left wanting for anything on this holiday, it is well equipped, spacious and has everything you could likely need. The master bedroom has a really comfy bed with a decent mattress (something I have found lacking outside of the UK often!) and the en suite bathroom is a lovely size. Thanks for a lovely holiday, will definitely recommend to friends and family!

comfortable family home

We enjoyed the comfort of 3 bathrooms, the outdoor facilities, dining tent and pool, well equipped and spacious kitchen together with lounge and diner surrounded by nature, roses and olive trees. We recommend the extraordinary experience of slow food cooking at close by Algarinejo and found our favourite Restaurant in town: "Flor de Olivo". Neighbouring Priego de Cordoba, Alcala, Moclin are worth a visit and one hour away Granada!

Fantastic rural house with private pool for a family holiday

House is perfect for a large family holiday. Great layout, very comfortable with very well equipped kitchen including a paellera which we made good use of! Nearest town is Montefrio, which we fell in love with! Very Spanish and people extremely friendly. Recommend visiting Cafeteria Elena for morning coffee and churros! The bar Los Canarios for a drink and tapas and also Casablanca for good tapas. Alcala la Real and Priego de Cordoba are worth visiting and really recommend making the drive to Cordoba. El Caminito del Rey is well worth the drive to Malaga but not for the faint hearted!! We love this part of Spain and will most definitely be returning!!

Lovely spacious property with great pool and views.

We had a lovely holiday at Casa Puente Romano, in late July. The house interior is clean, spacious and very tasteful, and it had everything we needed and more. The pool was great - newly done, and plenty big enough for our three teenage boys to have great fun in. There are lovely views (the hills are a bit bigger and more impressive than they look in the photos). There were friendly contacts to meet us, and on hand locally in case we needed anything during our stay. Montefrio is a 5 minute drive away. It's pretty, with several cafes, and we found everything we needed in the supermarkets. Granada is about an hour away; the Alhambra and city both lived up to high expectations. We also particularly enjoyed visiting the fortress at Alcala la Real (about 25 mins away). We'd certainly recommend this property.

About the host

Hosted by Clare

Host profile image
My husband, Rupert, and I live just outside London and have three grown up daughters. Ru is an antiquarian book auctioneer and I, having had a career in magazine marketing, now have a business of my own teaching children to touch type. We are a good few years off retiring but are beginning to have more time to spend abroad now that the children are only periodically living at home.

Why they chose this property

We have always wanted a sunny bolt-hole of our own. We considered France (Ru speaks French well) and Italy (where we've spent many lovely family holidays) but settled on the south of Spain because of the mild winter climate. We explored extensively and then came across Montefrio and fell in love with the town and its warm and friendly inhabitants. It is big enough to be really useful and enjoyable, and small enough to be unsophisticated and very thoroughly Spanish. The house itself appealed because of the pretty, rural views, the flat land (with the opportunity to grow our own fruit and veg should we ever be lucky enough to live here semi-permanently) and the proximity to town (local wine sampling an option without the need to drive). We knocked the house about a bit to achieve spacious and comfortable living and have tried to maintain some of the Moorish character that influences Andalucia in its decoration.

What makes this property unique

In anticipation of grand-children visiting (very much thinking ahead here), it was important to us to have a pool that was safe. Being raised, ballustraded and gated not only gives the pool area full sunshine all day long but it also means it is child-proof and therefore worry free. It was also important to us that we have neighbours (though not close ones and not very many of them) to avoid feeling isolated and one of these neighbours is the lovely Fransisco who looks after our land.
