About this property

Redpath Retreat- enjoy the quiet beauty of the prairie in this private cottage

Enjoy the peace, quiet and beauty of all of seasons in our lovely private cottage. Our farm site including our home and the cottage sits on a creek surrounded by 40 acres of wildflowers and prairie grasses. It is located on the west central Minnesota prairie and is home to abundant wildlife. Watch the sun rise and set and enjoy campfires under star filled night skies. A great place to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle of our lives and back into the nourishing embrace of nature. The cottage is a renovated granary with a rustic look and with all the modern conveniences. The original granary floor, barn wood and antiques mix with the modern comforts and conveniences. A loft accommodates a queen size bed and the living room has a comfortable queen size sleeper sofa. A fully equipped kitchen makes cooking easy and a full bath with shower will meet all your needs. Relax on the screened in porch or inside by the cast iron fireplace. Amenities include a flat screen TV connected to Dish network, Bluetooth enabled stereo system, DVD player, microwave, a Kuerig one cup coffee maker with an assortment of teas, coffee and hot chocolate. Enjoy sitting by our meditation garden, walk the trails, watch our entertaining chickens and gather their eggs for breakfast. Starting in spring you can canoe on the creek that flows through our property and in winter enjoy ice skating and cross country skiing on it. The area is on a migratory route and is host to many birds and waterfowl. Deer walk through the yard and other wild life is frequently viewed. Especially alluring is the peace and quiet of this country respite.

Hunting base camp

This was yet again, a great stay at Redpath Retreat! It is in close proximity to our family farm land so it makes a great 'base camp' for when we hunt / recreate on the land. We have stayed here 3 times now and plan on many more. Thanks for everything!

Absolutely stunning!

My husband and I stayed here for our first wedding anniversary. We couldn’t have found a better little cabin to spend the weekend. If you are looking for a peaceful, relaxing getaway from the every day hustle and bustle of life this is the perfect place for you! We loved walking around the property and looking at all of the different plant species on the property. Steve and Vicki have put in a lot of work to make this place truly memorable. We can’t wait to come back next time we want to get out of town!

Restorative oasis

This was extremely quiet and peaceful. Off the beaten path. We spent our time relaxing on the screened porch, reading, and walking the wonderful paths through the meadows and woods. The only sounds were birds and an occasional tractor in the distance. We absolutely loved it and hope to be back.

Every year more perfect than the last

We stayed here again for the sixth time. We love it so much. It’s so cozy and remote and the perfect way to disconnect while still having the comforts of a great little kitchen, bathroom, and tv/Bluetooth speakers and all. We don’t ever leave the property because everything you need is right there: Snow snowing trails, chickens to visit, endless hours of watching blue jays and fat squirrels, and the best reading couch. Vicky and Steve are the kindest and easiest people to chat with, and we always wish we could stay longer.

We will be back!

The pictures on VRBO do NOT do this place justice. The grounds are absolutely stunning, there are beautiful meandering trails through the woods, and the creek is immediately accessible. The cabin itself is absolutely darling. Sometimes at rentals you can tell that they were furnished with cast-offs and extras. Not here! Everything about Redpath is curated, down to the matching tableware. Vicky and Steve are lovely and genuinely invested in their visitor’s experience. We had a great time and would definitely love to come back!

Quiet, cute and relaxing!

I’ll start by saying that you are right next to the hosts home so be aware of that. I didn’t realize how close. They do stay out of your hair though! This was one of the most relaxing stays we’ve had while renting and would come back! It was so peaceful to sit on the porch swing, listen to the birds and drink my coffee. The trails were great! (Ticks were abundant, so check when you’re done walking) My goal for the weekend was to disconnect, relax and just spend time with my family and this was the perfect stay for that! Being able to bring our dog was a huge plus as well!

Redpath Retreat

Excellent! I wasn't planning on a vacation. I had stayed at a VRBO property once before. They send me emails. I came across this property and decided if dates worked out I was ready to go with my dog. My nephew (age 33) stayed 1 night. He loved the area and the property. He said it was cozy. I loved the eggs, chickens and chicken artwork in the kitchen. The owners supplied spices, condiments, olive oil etc. Kitchen was well equipped. Lots of brochures as well as newspaper articles about their startup. Steve gave me info on restaurants and farm history. Beautiful artwork. On the walls leading up to the loft more info on past events. If you like museums the Wheaton Museum was great. I would rent the place anytime of the year. Just to relax, read, hike the trails. I just rented for 3 days. A week would be great.

About the host

Hosted by Vicky Radel

Host profile image
We both grew up in the area and graduated from Wheaton High School in 1972. After high school we moved to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area where we lived for 30+ years and raised our family. Over the years we often spent time at Steve’s family farm. In the early 2000’s, with no one living there anymore, the farm site was becoming sadly dilapidated -- yet the land, trees and water continued to hold a great sense of peace and beauty.
We decided to buy the farm site, not quite knowing what we would do with it but wanting to preserve and restore its beauty and share it with others. We cleaned up 100 years worth of metal and junk and planted 6 acres of wildflowers and grasses to add to the hundreds of trees that were already there.
The process took several years. During that time we made weekend journeys to camp at the farm and do the work we could. We quickly found ourselves reluctant to leave at the end of the weekend. We decided to build a small home with plans to perhaps retire there.
In 2007 we moved into our new home (although we are not retired) and have been here ever since. We are so grateful every day that we are able to live here, enjoying the quiet beauty of the prairie, its sunrises and sunsets, the star filled night skies, amazing birds and wildlife, and of course our pet chickens who entertain and feed us (eggs only!)
We both have a keen interest in art. Steve graduated from University of Minnesota Morris with an art degree with a focus on sculpture and continues to explore his favorite medium. Vicky is pursuing her own interests in photography and encaustic painting (painting with pigmented wax). Our newest project on the farm is her new art studio. Vicky is also is an experienced practitioner of acupuncture and has a clinic in nearby Wheaton.

Why they chose this property

Since our house is small, we realized we needed additional room for guests. We found an old granary a mile away and had it moved to our site. In the spirit of recycling, we transformed it into a beautiful guest cottage that we have decided to share with people looking for a peaceful retreat like ours.

We love our decorating projects and have incorporated antiques and furniture from our parents and grandparents, barn doors from an uncle's abandoned farm 1 mile north of us and the horseshoe we found while digging the foundation. The original granary floor is refinished and a screen porch lends that relaxed country feel.
The cottage is about 200 feet from the house, where sight lines and trees maintain a sense of privacy for both buildings.

What makes this property unique

It is hard to find a truly quiet place in our busy world. A place where the city lights don't interfere with the view of the stars and a place you can find solitude if you wish. Long walks along the river (or on the river in winter) with the interplay of nature and wildlife are nourishing to the heart and soul. You can read or write a book while sitting on the porch or by the fireplace. You can watch the birds at the feeder or see water fowl at area refuges. Perhaps an eagle will fly over as you sit by the river or go out in the canoe. The deer walk through the property regularly. Whether it is a special event or a week long getaway the beauty of the prairie's big skies will greet you.
