About this property

Beach House Little Dipper Harbour Oceanfront Retreat

Delight in 1000 feet of your own private and pristine beach on the everchanging Bay of Fundy, neighbored by quaint fishing villages and home to many species of migratory birds. Watch great herons wade in the tidal pools awaiting their catch of the day see eagles soar overhead. Share the view with our local band of hummingbirds On most afternoons playful seals come into the bay at high tide and cavort right before your eyes. The water remains navigable by kayak or canoe for several hours. The beach is sandy and stretches the entire length of the cove. At high tide the ocean is just steps from your front door, easily accessible by foot, young and old alike. Walk the ocean floor at low tide and marvel at what the tide has brought in You can relax on the balcony and watch your children amuse themselves for hours on this extremely safe, protected beach. On a clear night during the summer months the Little Dipper constellation hangs directly above as do a myriad of stars, their visibility heightened by lack of ambient light from surrounding homes or commerce. It is magical beyond belief!!
The property is Less than half an hour from the bustling city of St. John, New Brunswick. Charming 2-storey beachfront cottage (built in 2006) on four spectacular acres, bordered by
fresh water creek and warm tidal pools. This unspoiled coastline will leave you in awe of nature's greatness! Perfect retreat for lovers, naturalists, poets, artists, and others.

Beautiful house by the bay

We were lucky enough to spend nine nights in this gorgeous, extremely well-equipped house right on the water. The layout is compact and unique with the light-filled kitchen and living room upstairs and bedrooms downstairs. The landlord quickly responded to a small issue and clearly cares very much that her guests have the best experience possible.

This is our happy place!

With the ever changing scenery as the tides roll in and out, the location of Maggie’s Run is perfect. In fact, when the tide is in, the house is so close to the ocean that from the upper floor, it looks as if it’s floating in it. The house itself is beautifully decorated with all of the amenities needed for a relaxing seaside holiday. It comfortably accomodates four adults or a family with one or two young children. And most importantly for us, dogs are very welcome. It has WiFi which is very slow and now has satellite TV (not necessarily a good thing!). There is virtually no cell phone reception, making calls impossible and texts unreliable. It does have a landline for incoming calls and emergencies. Finally, the owner of Maggie’s Run is lovely. We’ve rented the beach house from her several times and she’s always been friendly and reliable.

Breathtaking view vs flood

There was a smell upon walking into the property, but because I have smelled that in other lakefront properties, I didn't think much of it. I couldn't find the wifi password and it took the owner a while to reply, but she did, was very apologetic and told me how to find it. The one washroom upstairs had a somewhat dirty sink/counter, and there was sand on the kitchen counter and on the main washroom counter, too. I noticed there was what I assumed was mold in the one closet next to the stairs, but I can't be 100% certain. It was dark and on the wall. The tv didn't work, but the spectacular view was entertaining enough. The location of this property is breathtaking so I felt a little dirt was worth it all. The issue arose on the second-last day of my trip. I went to do a load of laundry and the washer must have had a leak somewhere or the pipe was broken. It flooded the washroom and the front hall. I reached out to the owner and received no reply. I tried again a few hours later, letting her know that I was leaving a day early because of this and that I had laid down some towels to soak up the water. I didn't not ask for a reduction on my shortened stay, but did hope that it would be offered, especially since it cost me another $200+ to change my flight. It's been over 24 hours of my last email to the owner and I have yet to hear from her. I don't know if I should have stayed to clean up the water, but I think I deserved a reply.

Lovely home, highly disappointing experience

My children and I were just there a couple days ago. Upon our arrival, I’ve noticed how dirty the home was. There was a full garbage bag in the driveway. We found a load of wet towels in the wash. The floors looked like they had not been vacuumed or washed in weeks with so much dog hair everywhere. The toilets were unwashed and toilet paper was a challenge to find and of course, sand everywhere in the house. I did have somewhat high expectations, considering the nice reviews I had read about this place and the extremely high rate we pay to rent this proprietary. It was such a disappointment to walk into a dirty house since the home is quite lovely. When I messaged the host about this, she was kind and respectful and offered some explanation and apologies. But never ones she offered to fix any issues by sending someone to clean or at the very least offered to refund part of the fees for services we did not received but paid for. Unfortunately, it does not matter how beautiful the home or location is, if it’s left filthy, it looses all of it’s charms.

Magical Property on The Bay of Fundy.

This beautifully efficient and comfortable cottage is situated within steps of the high tide mark. Having been fortunate enough to have stayed here numerous times throughout the years, I have experienced the broad spectrum of its ever-changing nature. Each part of the spring/summer/fall season brings with it certain visual, auditory and sensory delights. One needs to work with nature and be ready to apply sunscreen lotion and, at times, mosquito repellent… which are thoughtfully provided. From the balcony on the top floor of the cottage, one feels as though one is on the deck of an ocean liner. The incoming tide produces a delightful sound, while the outgoing tide enables one to explore the vastness of the ocean floor. The smell of the sweetgrass is intensified by the full sun while the tidal pools to one side of the property fill to overflowing with the incoming tide… particularly during full moons and downpours. The well-equipped kitchen with its scenic sitting area is on the top floor, along with a half-bathroom. The two bedrooms, each with a queen-sized bed are on the entry-level floor, along with a full bathroom which houses a washer-dryer unit. There are plenty of accouterments in the bathroom cabinets, should one have forgotten important items at home. In the hallway linen closet, there are plenty of clean, fluffy bath towels, and in each bedroom closet, one can find extra pillows and blankets. The cottage is most thoughtfully zoned for temperature control at the turn of a knob. A stay here, be it long or short, leaves one with a sense of well-being and peace. I eagerly look forward to many more visits here and many more delightful experiences at this Magical Kingdom by the Sea. EH from LI, NY

Lovely property but needs insect control

This cottage stands alone on a lovely horseshoe-shaped bay. Low tide provides a unique opportunity of investigating the interesting rocks and creatures in the seabed; high tide would be perfect for those who bring their own kayak. (We understand there is a kayak rental company nearby so it may even be possible to rent a kayak and transport it to the house. Swimming is possible depending on one's toleration of the cold water.) Though the cottage is quite small, it is nicely laid out, with the living space and terrace located on the upper floor to take advantage of the beautiful views. The kitchen is well-equipped, laundry facilities are available, and the bedrooms were comfortable. It would be most suitable for two couples, or a couple with two small children, since there are only two bedrooms, each with a queen bed, so that older children may find it uncomfortable, especially if they are not of the same sex. A cot is available but not sure where one would place it; we think the living quarters would be too tight for a cot to be comfortably laid out. Now for the other side of the coin. Sadly, we were plagued by insects during our entire stay, so much so that we could not enjoy the outdoors or terrace at all. Aggressive horseflies swarmed every time we entered or exited the house or the car, and at night we did battle with mosquitoes and gnats. It was a terrible pity that we did not enjoy sitting outside or walking on the beach because of the exploding insect population. We often felt that we were vacationing in the Amazon. We discussed the situation with the owner, who intends to investigate environmentally friendly ways of controlling these pests, but future renters should make certain that there is an effective plan to keep them at bay. Or bring your own bats and lizards. Finally, the house is a bit out of the way. Perfect if you intend to stay local, but most of the nature-related activities in this area are located out of St Andrews, an hours' drive from the house. This would not have bothered us because the travelling is easy with little or no traffic; it was unfortunately the bug situation that nearly did us in. Our two stars would increase to four if it not for these unwanted guests.

Our own luxury paradise on the Bay of Fundy - August 2016

The calmness from the sound of the changing tides. The first class amenities of our own beach house. The beautiful and serene view from our very private balcony. The extreme tranquility or this setting in an abundance of nature. Long walks exploring the Bay floor at low tide. The natural beauty of the surrounding area. Beautiful sunrises over the Bay. The aroma of fresh clean Canadian ocean air. Serene and comfortable! That is what our stay was mostly about. The owner spared no expense to provide a finely decorated and extremely well equipped home. You really don't have to bring very much with you. The modern kitchen is large and fully equipped, overlooks the Bay. The kitchen and living room on the top floor offer extraordinary views of the Bay and surrounding Canadian shore line. There is a fine music CD collection, along with many movies and books. Comfortable beds and all the needed linens. Restaurants and nightlife are a short drive away in Saint John. Sea Kayak rentals just up the road. Nothing else needed for a wonderful week! Thank you Karen!

Wonderful oceanfront vacation

We had an absolutely lovely time at this charming beach house. A beautifully decorated house with a real sense of style, and a spectacular view, especially from the balcony in the mornings! Karen, the owner, was most gracious and helpful. What a treat also to be able to bring our trusted companion who couldn't have been happier on the fantastic beach right outside the house. Great vacation! Will definitely return!

A YEARLY DESTINATION...

We have already lost count of how many summers we've stayed at Little Dipper Beach House. Coming here has become our much needed yearly emotional supplement. Neither descriptive words nor photos can ever do justice to this location and these accommodations. One must come for a prolonged stay in order to fully unwind and soak in the essence of the magic that surrounds.

Cozy property situated on the ocean's edge!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Maggie's Run. The beach house was well-equipped for a comfortable stay. The owner was very hospitable. And the location...beyond compare! We enjoyed walking the 1000 feet of private sandy beach every day and falling asleep each night listening to the sound of the surf. The owner is very dog-friendly so our Shelties also enjoyed their stay. They spent hours on the balcony keeping an eye on the movement of the tides and the seabirds but didn't see the fox that trotted across the ocean floor one day when the tide was low. Although it felt as if we were in the middle of nowhere, there's a spa just down the road and the City of Saint John is only 20 minutes away. We were reluctant to leave our nest but did walk the dogs at the Irving Nature Park on one afternoon and strolled around St. Andrew's on another. We're looking forward to our next visit in October...

Heavenly

Our romantic stay at Little Dipper this year, was as wonderful as ever. We had stayed at Little Dipper before, but for one reason or other, have never written a review. We think of Little Dipper as our "home away from home" as we own a home in Jonesport, ME with a wonderful view of the ocean. But, nothing quite compares to Little Dipper as the intimate relationship one has with the sea. The tides go out and the tides come in... the sounds are magnificent... the view is remarkable. We have been to numerous seaside environments (including our own home in Jonesport), but nothing, in our opinion, can compare to the absolute peace and sense of well-being that we experience when at Little Dipper. It is a most unique place... so much so, that we have put our home in Jonesport on the market... and will, in the future, be searching for a Little Dipper II (should there be such a place). From a practical standpoint, we have found the facilities to be user friendly and spotless... with a well equipped kitchen. The private beach, lovely garden area and surrounding grounds are a haven for body and soul. We will come again... and again... and again. Thank you for sharing this gorgeous spot... heaven on earth.

Serenity on the Bay

Sitting proudly on a road's bend, this charming house offers great big splashes of natural sunlight, comfortable living and sleeping spaces, and direct access to the Bay of Fundy, which provides magnificent twice-daily tidal fluctuations. Sleep with the windows open and enjoy the waves crashing as you sleep. Listen closely enough and you might hear some seals. The home owner was friendly and accommodating. I was delighted with my recent stay at this home and look forward to my next vacation there.

Born and raised in Connecticut, widowed with three wonderful adult children scattered about the globe, a life long love of animals with five Skye terriers and a cat at the moment. I would have more if I stayed in one place long enough. I own and run a bed and breakfast in Calais, Maine and winter in Florida's horse country. Ultimately I must thank my husband and father, both now gone, for their love and support, and my mother who would rather be on my balcony in Little Dipper than any place else in the world.

Why they chose this property

After more than two years searching for waterfront property in the U.S., I came to New Brunswick feeling the pull of my ancestral home in Canada. My mother was born in Kingston, Ontario. In the blink of an eye as if the universe had heard me and was prepared to answer, this property became available to me. The window of opportunity was open for just one short day midwinter 2007 and I seized that day and became the official stewardess of Little Dipper Harbour!!! This was a decision and a moment I will never regret.

What makes this property unique

The sea, the tides, the salt air, the view,.a nature preserve at your doorstep, the wildlife, seals in the harbour, not to mention 1000 feet of one's own private beach...all of this yet a short drive to Saint John with all the amenities of a large city and an hour from the U.S. border in Calais, Maine. Seven years and counting and I still pinch myself at my good fortune to have been in the right place at the right time!!
