About this property

Alice's Acres- cozy log home in the woods, close to Nederland and Black Hawk

Alice's Acres is located on the Front Range only 1-1/2 hrs from DIA (Denver International Airport), 1 hr from Boulder and downtown Denver. It is in the midst of Roosevelt National Forest on 4 wooded acres (elevation 8,700 ft). The closest mountain town is funky Nederland, 20 minutes away where you can stock up on food in the supermarket and visit local stores and restaurants. At Alice's Acres you have the best of both worlds: easy access to cities and the peace of mountain living, whether you plan a romantic get-away or a family vacation.
On the first floor is a new kitchen, large master bedroom with new handmade aspen bed and organic mattress (king size), next to it is a full bathroom. The living room has a woodburning stove, TV, radio, lots of videos and a piano (try it but it hasn't been tuned lately), mud room and the half bathroom are adjacent. From the veranda one has a view of the high mountains. On the deck at the south side you can enjoy soaking in the sun, even in the winter.
Upstairs is a bedroom with 2 twin beds, lots of children's books and games, another large bedroom with a pullout couch and more books in English and German. This latter room is also used as an office and has 4 large sky lights.
There is much original artwork in the house.
Below this house is a little one-room cabin that has bunk beds in it. Children love it because it's away from the adults. However, it's close enough for the adults to see and hear what goes on. Only available during summer months.

Rocky Mountain Get Away

Very nice cabin and very responsive owner. Came from a lowland area so watch out for altitude sickness! Would definitely return.

Great Spot Up in the Mountains

The place was great for our family! Quiet and peaceful. You will need an AWD or 4X4 SUV as the roads are steep and can get washed out if heavy rain. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked for cooking. Highly recommend.

A snowy mountain wonderland

This cabin in the mountains was a perfect stay for our family of 4. Our boys had their own space upstairs and we had a large room w/full bath and a King-sized bed. We loved the wood-burning stove, cooking meals, playing games, and watching some classic movies. We didn't have a phone signal (AT&T), but the wifi in the cabin was good enough for us to stream movies, make Facetime calls, etc. The cabin is located about 20 minutes from Nederland and 30 minutes to Eldora Mountain - a beautiful drive. It should be known that this property is not really easy to get to if you don' t have the right type of vehicle. We were in an all wheel drive SUV and had a few issues when it was snowing on our first night coming in.

Great mountain get-a-way

We had an excellent experience at this property. The property was fully stocked and the love and attention given to the home was evident. Great location to explore Ned and the Front Range. We had a fantastic time unplugging and appreciating the mountains. Thanks for a great experience!

Remote cabin in the mountains

This cabin was just what we were looking for: a peaceful place in the mountains. Once we adjusted our schedule to allow for drive time in the mountains, we had some great day trips to Boulder and Colorado Springs .

Perfect for a family of 5

Loved the property. Driveway was awful, not conducive to a traveling family pulling a Uhaul trailer AT ALL. Definitely needs work. But cabin itself was gorgeous.

Great stay in the mountains!

The cabin is great. Clean and plenty of room for a small family. Comfortable and quiet. The nearest town is about a 15 minute drive and the roads are a little rough immediately around the cabin, but we were fine in our 2wd SUV. Cell service for us was hit or miss at the cabin, but the WIFI in the cabin was sufficient to access what we needed. Enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back in the future.

Heaven on Earth

Alice’s Acres is warm, welcoming and cozy. There was plenty of room for me and my 4 friends and plenty of places to hang out. There are two porches, a yard, living room and kitchen table, for relaxation and chat sessions! Unfortunately, Gilpin county was on a “no campfire” restriction during our stay, but that didn’t stop us from sitting around the “fireless” fire pit with our morning coffee. We found some games and had a couple fierce Trivial Pursuit matches!! Things to do— We drove into Boulder and enjoyed the Pearl Street Mall, stopped in Nederland for groceries and sat on the rocks in the river at the park, which was very serene. We went to Red Rocks for a reggae fest concert and had a great time! Colorado is a beautiful state and we all crossed a few things off of our bucket list. I highly recommend Alice’s Acres it is truly a peaceful and beautiful slice of Heaven!!

Quiet, clean and well-maintained cabin. Has all the essentials. In the woods, but close enough to Nederland for groceries and restaurants. Plenty of great hikes nearby. Owner was responsive and helpful. Would recommend and stay again.

Mid trip get away!

Leg 2 of a 4 leg trip. Incorporated college visits into a family trip. Perfect place to wind down and re-energize the brain. Luckily had a day of rain and cool temps. Allowed us to use the wood stove which totally made the trip great! Visited to the state park to avoid the National park business. Would totally reserve again! Appreciated being called even with a minor detail of no coffee maker:) the host had the French press ready on stand by which (I think is better). Great accommodations! Good with 2 teens to go upstairs to find some solitude.

Wonderful cabin in the Colorado Mountains.

This was the first time that we as a family were able to get away from New Mexico, and what a getaway! It was in close enough proximity to Denver that we could still do things there, but far enough away that the city just faded away when we got to the cabin. The cabin was clean with all the amenities, in the middle of tall pine forest. There was some internet, but I would not count on it except for e-mail and the occasional internet inquiry - very slow. It was actually refreshing to leave the internet behind for a few days! Christel was easily reached and very gracious as we miscalculated on the last day we were supposed to be there, so she allowed us some extra time to pack up. I would recommend at least a front-wheel drive as it rained almost every day we were there and it was a little dicey getting into the drive way a few times.

A quiet, cozy home

After 10 days traveling through the National Parks, this was the perfect place to relax before flying out of Denver. It is private and has everything you need to be comfortable. The near by town is quaint and fun to visit. THere is a good coffee shop and pizza place. I would definitely stay her again.

Great Break

We had a great few days in this small cabin. Communication with the owner was easy and the cabin was VERY clean and VERY well supplied (spices in the cupboards, saran wrap, etc). The driveway and turn into it were tight--and the road to the cabin form and paved road was rattling--packed mud with lots of divots and sharp turns. REALLY a struggle to get there...but nice to arrive. Zero wildlife round the cabin, which was disappointing, and the wifi was as described: nothing streamed (so not great for a teenager) and not TV or anything--just DVDs. All this was in the description, so everything was accurate--but better wifi, so we could have streamed, would have been nice.

Quiet visit

We were in the area for work and brought our girls. They loved climbing in the rocks outside, going on walks and more. The space was clean and rustic. It was a bit hairy getting in - thankfully we followed their directions instead of the gps. I wish the address was better lit, dark road we went past three times.

Great Cabin and Privacy

The photos and description online show what a delightful place this is. Here are a few highlights: * The location is up a gravel/rocky hill. AWD is helpful to get there. We were able to park 2 vehicles on the driveway. Just have to be careful pulling out. * There is no clear view of the mountains from the cabin or deck, but it has lots of pine trees and privacy and is still a wonderful place to relax whether inside, on the little patio in the sun, or on the covered porch on the other side of the house. * The upstairs room with skylights is a great place to sit and read books (quite a variety are there) or play games...or take a nap! * The wood-burning stove works well and there is lots of fire wood. * There are a variety of movies in the living room with a small TV. * It is nice to have a washing machine... no dryer but things dry quickly if you hang them outside. * The kitchen has a lot of basics including spices * The heat is on a timed system that goes on from 9 pm to 2 pm the next day. We had a problem with no heat when we got there (it was a little chilly) but Christel responded to messages promptly and told us how to turn it on. * Nederland is about 15-20 minutes away. Busy on weekends, as noted it is kind of a funky little town. We found a great pizza place & coffee shop and a few little stores. People are good about wearing masks. * One entrance to Golden Gate Canyon State Park is about 10-15 minutes away. Nice place to hike & view aspens. Rather busy on weekends, especially on the trails near Panorama Point. ** I would recommend this place to anyone and would stay there again! - Bernie & Connie

About the host

Hosted by Christel Detsch

Host profile image
I am a native of Germany and came to Colorado in 1974 as an exchange student-a lifetime ago. I have been here ever since but I go back to Europe regularly to visit family and friends.
For many years Alice's Acres was our vacation home. Now the children are older, so am I, and we want to share our house with others who love the mountains, the peace and quiet. It is still furnished more like a cozy family retreat than an impersonal vacation rental with our books, travel memories and a piano. And we still use it as a family with our grandchildren who are learning to love the mountains as we do.

Why they chose this property

There is a little cabin cabin below the house. We stumbled on it in 1977 and spontaneously decided to buy it. We had very little money, barely enough, and it wiped us out. However, we had our mountain retreat. Over the years we added more acres and built the larger home. That's how it started.

What makes this property unique

I love our house and its surroundings, the wind in the trees, the fresh air, and most of all the peace and tranquility. To step outside in the morning, a cup of coffee in your hand-it is priceless. Our home is authentic Colorado.
