Come visit our Cedar Key island getaway and truly embrace nature's paradise! Cedar Key Island, the clam capital, is far enough away from the hectic outside life but close enough to airports to make this escape possible. It's a wonderful, quiet town with a lot of character - they say it feels like the 'old Key West'. Our home has a gorgeous new kitchen island, appliances, colorful decorations...to put a smile on your face. Decorated with airy colors to kick back and let the stress fade away. Loft with 2 full beds (requires notice at the time of the reservation; bedding will be available for use but the loft beds will not be made in advance of arrival; loft has a short ceiling & is via a ladder), 2 bedrooms each with a queen bed, 2 bathrooms (attached to each bedroom), a pullout couch and the outside deck positioned perfectly to take in the BREATHTAKING VIEW and GORGEOUS SUNSETS. Since the sun sets on our side, in the afternoons it is important to keep the shades drawn to keep things cool. Clam shell, rock, private, quiet, road. The spectacular, quiet beauty of nature gently caresses the back of our home. When you are ready to explore the town or pop over to the tiny airport to watch the visiting planes. The best way to start the day - sit on our deck with a cup of coffee in hand, with the breeze gently blowing. Be a part of the peaceful atmosphere - you will WANT to turn off the cell phone and just be in the moment. Walk down to the nearby nature walk for a quick swim and enjoy a bird watching paradise!
Are you familiar with Cedar Key? It's lovely.
We absolutely enjoy any time we can spend in the home. It's a great place - really cute as a button. It's "bright" with decorations to really make you smile.
We purchased items from local artists to decorate. Visiting is like putting real life aside and we bet you'll adore it. The view is beyond gorgeous from our deck . Folks in the neighborhood really stay to themselves so it's like having your own road to the home. There is an outdoor shower on the deck overlooking the salt marsh. It's lots of fun to wash off at the end of the day while watching the sun set. We just installed a gate up on the deck so a pup can enjoy a nap in the sunshine. Each morning birds from around the area feed on the fish in the shallow waters at low tide not far from the deck. The view from the deck changes each day depending on the weather and tides. (We are not waterfront, there is no fishing from our house. There are great locations in town and over at the nature walk to fish.) Please note that CK is an island so internet connections, anywhere on the island, are not as strong as populated cities that you may be used to - but embrace the quiet and opportunity to enjoy your family & the lovely island!
The island has a great golf cart rental place so lots of people enjoy that unique experience and park their cars :) while they are visiting. The nature walk is very close to our house so we like to walk down there. Sometimes we swim at the end of the path. We enjoy the town "beach" but prefer a few quiet spots we've found, to splash around and enjoy the quiet. The town beach and most places throughout the island are really pet friendly. We often see dolphins while we are swimming! For kayaking, there are 2 single kayaks and 1 tandem kayak available for use. You need to drive with the kayaks to launch. We throw them in the back of the car and go off the town beach. It's fun to ride over to the little airport. Folks travel from far and wide to fish in CK, bird watch or take photographs. We totally look forward to taking boat and or small Plane tours while in CK, learning about the little islands nearby or better yet, renting a boat and exploring them ourselves! The islands are great - they are quiet, undisturbed and it's awesome to picnic as we sit in the little pools of water or at the water's edge. There is a nice mix of artists locally which is neat. There are interesting little shops - jewelry, paintings, clothes, hot sauce - all kinds of cool things to purchase or look at. There are several small churches that welcome visitors. The small library has a computer for use and it's easy to get a card to take out books (and they have piles of donated books to keep).
There is a huge pier in the center of town for fishing. Go to the hardware store to ask any questions - they know everything there!
CK is the clam capital of course, so you are in for a treat. We visited one of the clam places (on the right as you enter town, but before you go over the little bridge to get to the gas station). You can buy tons of clams at a super reasonable price and have a clam feast!
Restaurants - Some say the best burgers are at Island Hotel (and it's rumored it is haunted there!) but my kids would say Steamers for a burger. Iteamers has really good food (especially the sea food pasta dish & the blacked shrimp taco) and sometimes live music. The market has decent pizza and is take out only. There is a new pizza place in town now too! Our favorite grownup hang out is the Tikki Bar on the right hand side a little before you enter town (sign says Low Key Hideaway and there are brightly painted doors) for an inexpensive drink, great sunset in a casual atmosphere. The little hardware store in town has a helpful staff. We try to plan ahead though and stop in Crystal River or another larger town on the way in, to get supplies we will need during our stay like bottled water, suntan lotion, bug spray (always needed in rural Florida), foods we can't live without...There is also a dollar general just outside of town that is handy to have nearby.
The kids and I spent 5 weeks in Cedar Key over the summer. We weren't sure if we'd "get bored" but the time flew by and we cried when we had to leave! It's truly a pleasure to visit. We've tried to make our home into a retreat - ready for relaxation and enjoyment. The place just makes us smile. One of my favorite parts of CK, is to have morning coffee or an afternoon margarita out on the quiet deck, enjoying one of most glorious views imaginable. Seriously, our view is terrific - wildlife, gorgeous sunsets and the open sky. It's so private and calm. I thought I'd be on laptop nonstop being so far away from civilization but within days, I stuck it in a drawer and just enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere! Hopefully you like seafood - the kids dream of going back to CK soon to get their fill. We bought a 100 clams for $35 on our last night there during the last trip and cooked them up in white wine and garlic - it was a wonderful celebration! What else can I tell you that might be helpful? Please email back.
Thank you!
