About this property

Casa Paloma Centrally Located Abiquiu Gem: great views, roomy kitchen, new AC!

We are centrally located in Abiquiu (w/ HOA-maintained dirt roads within Prado Valley Ranch). We've just added mini splits with zoned AC tied in with new grid tied solar array...
Pete & I spend part of the fall, winter & early spring in our new New Mexican home, thoroughly enjoying our time there. We stay with an eye to updates & making it a comfortable stay for our late spring, summer and early fall guests. We've added additional seating to the lovely portal & viewing patio, as well as a table for outdoor dining on the portal. We have a picnic table & a grill for the back patio, outside the kitchen, for breakfast dining, or shady meals in the afternoon or evening. He also built a fine, new 'convertible' bench/table for the upper balcony, for meals there or creative endeavors. We offer a carport, to shade vehicles from the most intense summer sun & from surprise thunderstorms with hail. We have many artists who enjoy the breathtaking views that Paloma offers (myself included) & we have made it possible to work from several locations.

Pets (1 or 2 small or medium size well behaved dogs. Sorry no cats, Pete is allergic) allowed on first floor only for a one time per stay fee of $50 per pet. Guests are expected to honor the first floor rule for pets. We also ask that dogs stay off of furniture & beds. Thank you.

Our kitchen is roomy & we love to cook many a gourmet meal there - so bring your groceries in & enjoy! (We supply an array of spices & herbs, condiments, usually coffee & a small selection of teas. We also offer dish & sensitive-skin laundry detergents, a washer/dryer - & even a clothesline.) We leave Casa Paloma in late April or early May, kicking & screaming as we love our stays in NM so much - but we leave a beautiful, comfy home for you to use as headquarters for your own northern NM adventuring.
We ask that you be respectful of our home & hope that you will also thoroughly enjoy the beauty & majesty of place that it offers, there above the El Rito Creek bosque. We adore listening to it happily gurgling below us during our stays. Oh, & did I mention the incredible quiet nights & those unstoppable stars?... If you're looking for a private, natural getaway, Casa Paloma is IT...

We also now offer HORSE FACILITIES! We have fenced the large front area of our property with 4-1/2' to 5' high no-climb horse fencing with a two-stall barn & corral. Bring a couple of horses, your hay, grain & buckets & enjoy ride-outs straight from our front yard! You can ride for miles into the arroyo, just below us, or ride through the plateaus in Prado Valley, where we live (please don't ride cross open fields, which would be neighbors yards), or you can take trails in the nearby Carson or Santa Fe National Forests, just short trailer-rides away. And there is lots of room in the circular driveway to park your rig.
Talk with Laura, if you would like to bring your equines to Casa Paloma. Charge is $100 per horse, per stay or week. (No stallions, rowdy horses or cribbers, please...)

We are in the middle of many historic & recreational sites: Carson Nat'l Forrest is 4 miles north on 554; El Rito village is 8 miles north; the old Abiquiu village is about 8 miles away. Bode's General Store, where locals & visitors gather for food & cheer, groceries & gifts, is across the road. Ojo Caliente, our wonderful local hot springs, is1/2 hour away. Just up Hwy. 84 is Abiquiu Lake - w/ summer recreational activities & beautiful views. Ghost Ranch, where Georgia O'Keeffe painted, is just beyond - about 25 minutes from Casa Paloma). Ghost Ranch now offers many workshops, plus hiking & horseback riding & a fine new history museum, featuring dinosaur fossils found in the area! Close by is Christ in the Desert Monastery, where one can drive preferably all-wheel drive, 14 scenic & bumpy miles in dry weather to secluded peace & check out what the Monks are doing. Awesome Echo Amphitheater is nearby. Tierra Amarilla & Chama, two charming northern New Mexico communities, are an hour's drive north. These villages are only 45 miles from Pagosa Springs. And Durango - a lively little western town - is just 3-1/2 hours from Casa Paloma. The ancient Anasazi ruins of Mesa Verde are just west of Durango - and the Four Corners of UT/AZ/CO & NM are just beyond that - so all this adventure is just one days drive away! The Grand Canyon is about 7 hours west of us.
(Santa Fe & Taos are all within an hour's drive, south or north of us.)

Los Alamos glows directly south of us, with a fine library, a swimming pool, a large Smith's grocery store - and all the scientific history of atoms & bombs one could imagine.
Jemez (hot) Springs; Cliff dwellings of Bandelier Nat'l Monument; the ancient & verdant volcanic caldera of Valle Grande & Puye Indian Ruins are all right in this area. Any one of these (or a combination) make for a fine day's exploratory of culture & natural beauty within a 45 minute drive. Any of these offer wonderful hiking.

Golf?... Well, there are several terrific desert courses! Black Mesa Golf, just south of Espanola, is a half an hour away & offers very nice greens. Buffalo Thunder Casino, about 15 minutes further south, towards Santa Fe, has a terrific (Hilton Resort caliber 27-hole) course, with food, drink & gambling waiting in the wings. Los Alamos also offers a fine public course. Santa Fe has several more.

Hiking is everywhere you turn, out in these huge, open sky lands, starting with walking out the driveway & down the arroyo, just below us on Fort Defina Drive. Take a left & spend tranquil time by the El Rito Creek, a sweet seasonal stream just below our home. We've hiked through the 'neighborhood' and have thoroughly enjoyed the climb & the trails that meander right here at home (a terrific area to walk your dogs). Peace, photos & views abound. Once booked & paid, we offer a comprehensive list of area hiking, biking & riding for your adventure outings.

Plaza Blanca (advanced permission/registration required)- famous in Abiquiu for its geology & beauty - is about 7 miles away, down off of County Road 155. If you're a hiker, you cannot miss a stay here without a least one mind-boggling trek in to these awe-inspiring white cathedral rocks. (An interesting tidbit is that the closing scene of "Cowboys & Aliens" was filmed in Plaza Blanca, along with many, many other Hollywood westerns of yesteryear & recently.)
Note: Plaza Blanca is accessible by gate code. To get this, please register with this private property's owner. If interested, contact daralIslam at PlazaBlanca@daralislam.org to request registration, permission and to get the gate code. It or may not be available for hiking at the time of your stay, as they close it during movie filming.

And, of course, no visit to Abiquiu - O'Keeffe country - is complete until one has explored Santa Fe, only an hour's drive southeast. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum awaits you, in the historic Plaza, as well as an untold amount of world-class art galleries on famous Canyon Road, art & clothing boutiques, fine shopping, fine dining, an abundance of grocery stores & antique shops... the list is endless.
The Rail Runner train can take you on down to Albuquerque, even, to explore Olde Town!... So MUCH to do; so little time...

If you want to explore the ancient church with the famous 'healing dirt' the 200-year-old El Santuario de Chimayo' sits outside the old village of Chimayo'. This is one of my personal favorites in the area, with a blend of Catholic history & mysticism that moves my spirit to tears. This is known as the "Lourdes of the Southwest"; thousands pilgrimage here annually for the "tierra bendita" at Easter and at Christmas. Be sure to allow time to explore el santuario & its adjacent chapels & gift shop. Afterwards, I suggest you take in a meal at the Rancho de Chimayo' Restaurante, a local favorite, full of old Mexican atmosphere, great food, & both indoor & lush outdoor dining.

A trip to Taos is an hour, or so, further north, either along the "River Road" (paralleling the Rio Grande) or explore the "High Road", through tiny & creative ancient villages. One of them is Truchas (where "The Milagro Beanfield War" was filmed in the 1970s. Robert Redford directed this timeless movie. It became the village of Milagro - where miracles still do occur.) Other villages, with old Catholic churches, along the High Road are Cordova, Ojo Sarco, Las Trampas & Penasco - all creative centers - winding thru' the scenic Santa Fe Nat'l Forest into Rancho de Taos. Here you will find one of the most photographed churches in America: Santuario San Francisco de Asis.
Taos, itself, offers up its own Plaza, culture & artistic history, as well as the famous Taos Pueblo, where Tewa Indians still make drums. The Taos Pueblo is one of the oldest continually-habitated civilizations in the United States.
Just outside of Taos is found one of the highest bridges in the world: the Rio Grande Gorge River Bridge, where one can drive (or walk) over & hear the reverberate echoes off great ancient walls plunging down 800 ft. to the Rio Grande River - which looks tiny from this perspective. NOT for those afraid of heights or the faint of heart!

***The Abiquiu area is a magnet to history, creativity, culture & natural beauty. To artists, photographers, poets & writers, scientists & outdoor adventurers.
Please enjoy your outings, then return to our portal or patio & relax into a quiet night of brilliant stars.

Exceptional stay

This place is better than a home away from home. You are enveloped in warmth and welcome. The hosts reached out ahead of our travel dates to make sure we had all the information we needed to make our first visit to New Mexico wonderful. The kitchen facilities are the best i have ever seen in a rental. The views from the home are outstanding. The place is very clean and all the amenities very very good. We loved the paintings and the books. You will want to prolong your stay. We hope to go back soon. The hosts were such wonderful people. Always available whenever you reached out and answered our questions and provided suggestions that made our visit very fruitful. Yhe fall colors from the upstairs deck and the sunset views are unforgettable. Thank you again Peter and Laura for opening your home to us. Stay blessed.

Great stay for access to Ghost Ranch

We had planned to stay in Santa Fe and Taos for. Little over a week and one of our trips involved hiking in Ghost Ranch. This is a good quiet location to stay a couple of nights to be closer to the area. The roads are slightly rough getting to the place but we were in a Jeep so no problems. We were able to grocery shop in Santa Fe before coming to the house so that was good because there are only a few options for groceries around the property as it’s in a remote area. The breakfast burritos are excellent at Bode’s near the Phillips 66 gas station and they have a good selection of wine and other items you might need. Very nice peaceful stay.

Unpretentious and dazzling space for stay in Abiqiui

We are very familiar, for decades, with the magical Abiqiui area. Our stay at Laura and Pete's was frosting on the cake, and for me as good as it can get (other than a week at the Monastery of Christ in the Desert).

Great location, lovely house

My family loved the house and the beautiful location. The only downside was the lack of A/C. We happened to be there during the hottest days of the year and getting the house to a comfortable temperature wasn't really possible, even with the fans provided.

Magical property in a lovely area

We loved everything about our two-night stay at Casa Paloma! We spent one night watching the sunset on the upstairs balcony (and convening with the coyotes) and the other watching the stars from the porch. It was scenic, romantic, and functional for our needs. Despite some spotty cell reception, the owners were communicative and kind. Would definitely stay here again!!!

Fantastic home base for exploring Northern New Mexico

The location was an ideal home base for exploring all over norther New Mexico. The property is located in an area with beautiful scenery in a peaceful, quiet country location, great for stargazing and watching wildlife. Highly recommend the walks from the property the owner has outlined. The one negative was a large amount of ants on the patio areas, so we weren't really able to enjoy the outdoor spaces. Although we visited during a heat wave, the the house was pleasant with using shades and opening windows.

Stay at Casa Paloma

We had a wonderful time at Casa Paloma. I was looking for a quiet retreat for the 4th of July holiday and definitely found it. The home has all the necessities and is nestled on a very big lot with no neighbors in earshot. What a relaxing time we had. There were plenty of miles of dirt roads to wander , as well as an arroyo. I think we saw one car pass through the neighborhood during our stay. The home was easy to find and the hosts were very informative and friendly.

Casa Paloma

The location is incredible, views are breathtaking. The hiking was awesome, we put a lot of activities into our short trip, and we could have easily stayed another week. We stayed in the upstairs bedroom, the view from the deck was incredible. The bed could be firmer, but the bathroom and jacuzzi were an added benefit. The only suggestion that we had was possibly putting a screen door on the door leading out to the fire pit area. Laura and Peter were extremely responsive to all our emails and, we had a nice phone call after we got there. They offered us a couple of additional days and we would have loved to take them up on the offer.

About the host

Hosted by Peter Gianniny & Laura Cockerille Giannini

Host profile image
Pete & I have been coming to the northern New Mexico from Virginia for 23 years now, falling more & more in love with the unique ancient lands, the turquoise skies & red rock mesas. The Sangre de Christos are captivating. So in 2015, we decided to buy into our dream of coming here to 'land & stay awhile'. Pete had just retired: I paint & write & one does not retire creativity, so we've set up a studio in part of Casa Paloma. I've now begun a series of paintings on local coyotes while there in the winter, which now adorn the walls leading to the upper bedroom suite. Meanwhile, you can come & be creative in any way you should chose... Painting, writing, poetry, photography... Or simply just reading about the local area & all of its deep history. Paloma, & this spiritual Abiquiu area, quietly stir the creative juices in one's soul... Come join us & enjoy the absolute peace of place that we happily share with you when we are away.

Why they chose this property

In our search, many properties for sale in Santa Fe & Abiquiu were out of our league, financially. We reached w/ this purchase, as it was a bit of a fixer-upper. Pete & I spent the month of April in Abiquiu in 2015 upgrading our new home. We updated plumbing (including a brand new kitchen faucet, a pump for the Jacuzzi upstairs & a new water softener). We also painted, inside & out, including re-treading many of the deck steps & giving it several new coats of paint. We also cleared the "Goat Heads" (evil sandspurs) out of the yard, a despicable task. (You & your dogs will thank us.) Our sweat equity is your sweet gain, as all y'all have to do is come & enjoy some downtime in this lovely home & surrounding areas. Oh, & yes, in April of 2015 we added a large Terra Stone 'viewing' patio to the front, & in the fall we came back & built a multi-level wall to flow with the land around it. We commissioned an iron entry gate to be built, then Pete & I finished it beautifully in "Southwest style". We also completed a large (3,000 sq.') dog run outside of the patio & 'rabbit-fenced' a couple of garden areas around it. Pete has built a sturdy picnic table for the shady back area & a convertible bench for the balcony while I interwove the coyote fencing, as part of the dog run. Lots to love!
***Oh, & yes - there are the endless miles of walking, down to the arroyo below us, or on the plateaus above us, for walking the trails & enjoying magnificent landscapes, without ever even getting in your car***.

What makes this property unique

We chose this home for several reasons: one, we liked how centrally located it was to everywhere we wanted to be, see, or do. The roads in are also better than many. But it was the lay-out of the house than sealed the deal. We love the Ponderosa pine beams throughout the downstairs, the Mexican tiles in both baths, the open & airy quality & flow of living - and the quaint wood stove built into the SW fireplace, w/ its nooks, crannies & nichos. Pete & I both enjoy cooking, so the kitchen was a lovely bonus, w/ spaciousness for two to cook-up a feast. (We have left some spices & herbs for you to enjoy w/ your own culinary creations - & there are many cookbooks, as well. There are also a few cloth shopping bags, as Santa Fe has banned plastic. So, bring your cooler, do your shopping, & come cook your meals in-house.)
The views are magnificent, so typical of this area, from most windows of Paloma. One sees the Jemez Mountain Range directly from the portal, w/ the old triangular 'walls' where the caldera (volcano) used to be behind them. There, of course, is Cerra Pedernal, appearing ghostly in the ever-changing skies, & the entire Sierra Negra range is to the west of us. Just to the north is a fascinating red bluff that Pete has dubbed "Laura's Mesa" that I have truly fallen in love with. It is far more intricate & challenging than it seems... (I know; I have a somewhat unfinished painting of The Red Bluff in the downstairs bedroom.)

And the skies... What can one say about Abiquiu skies? Except that they are endless & eat the mountains & swallow the earth & they change constantly, the Drama Queens of New Mexico, day or night. Come, see for yourself. Sit on the viewing patio or the portal, or have lunch on the shady patio behind the house, & just breathe it all in. One need not leave Casa Paloma to enjoy your stay. But still, there is SO much to do just outside your door ...
