The owners did tell us there was a smell in the main bedroom but were endeavouring to find out more. However it was very evident when we arrived and we identified it as a dead body under the floorboards. Thinking about leaving, it was too much problem so we stayed. We had to make the bed ourselves which we have never had to do. There was no salt in the entire cottage. The TV remote wouldn't work. Bed was uncomfortable.
The area is lovely and quiet - would be a beautiful place to stay a week if you got good accommodation.
I keep coming back to this perfect property which is an actual house so has heaps of room, including a lovely large back yard to enjoy the native bird song of Bellbirds and other native birds. Would highly recommend this great place.
Property is as described: "A classic kiwi bach", this means it isn't fancy, but it fitted us perfectly, we were very warm and comfortable, would stay again.
1 star — shocked at the inferior state, old decrepit lounge suite, plate of old used soaps in bathroom, shabby decor.
Worstly was the abusive txt with filthy language at midnight from host, replying to simple question I had asked in the early evening.
I recommend this property be deleted — do not go there it’s a complete shambles.
Great location. Very much an old style bach as advertised. Would have appreciated a few basic supplies like teabags. Bach did smell of tobacco smoke when we arrived
We enjoyed our time at this traditional style crib, very close to beach and walk near estuary. Great instructions and easy to find. Garden a bit overgrown but we still got the portable bbqs going for family dinners and enjoyed all the space outside.
Nice family batch to stay in as base to travel around the Catlin's. Kids loved playing in the back yard and short walk to playground. Number of native birds came and visited. 2nd time we stayed and likely to again :)
Great Crib, tidy homely and very warm. Great communication with owners 😊 will definitely book again.
Thank you Fiona.

Not for us
Having traveled around the North and South Island for months we are used to a mix of properties and rely heavily upon reviews. In our opinion the reviews by some here are a little hard to believe. That considered we all have an opinion and this is how we saw it .
This is a true NZ holiday Bach. It is old and worn as are the fixtures and fittings with a lot of damp in one bedroom. The bedding and towels are fresh but that’s about as far as it goes . The furniture , carpets and kitchen cupboards are grubby. The washer wasn’t available due to a water shortage …..could have warned us as we choose properties with this facility on purpose .
The outside is not much better. The garden does have a lovely aspect and lots of bird life. Other than that it’s a bit if a health and safety nightmare.
It rained and the front deck was a skid pan. The handrail is on its last legs. I wouldn’t want young kids running around without supervision, so many trip hazards and bits of wood, iron etc that could do damage .The gates don’t shut and bang away all night when windy.
On the plus it is a great area especially when the sun is out . It wasn’t expensive , saying that we have paid the same or less per person for so much better (there were only 2 of us). Furthermore it was actually the only place on this trip we almost walked out of and say no thanks.
Thinks the inside of the kitchen cupboards needs a touch of freshness. The fridge needs to be a bit bigger. Kettle needs to be replaced, it’s leaking badly and doesn’t always want to work.
Water pump in garage runs most off the time. It’s a bit concerning because it’s only suppose to switch on when water is running inside the house. Think it needs a check to see if there is not maybe a leak somewhere. We have had the same problem at our rental property and pump was running constantly and when they came to check they found there was a leak under the house. Now water pump only switch on when using water inside the house. Thank you for making your home available to us, we did had a lovely time away.
A lovely place. Plenty of space with a lovely yard and great places to sit and listen to the sounds of the tuis and bellbirds
Inside cozy and fresh. Great shower comfortable bed and couches. felt welcome and at home from the moment we arrived
A great base to have for a visit to the Catlins. Cosy when the weather was inclement and all the amenities we needed. Fiona was very helpful in passing on all the information we needed.
