Wonderful spot!

This was a fun spot for us. We were in the national park most of the time which this place sits so close to. The kids had a great time in the little lake there catching fish and browsing around the gardens. Peggy and Lee are very nice and welcoming. This place reminded me of grandmas country cabin. We will stay again if we head back down there.

Oasis in a dry land

While we were pleased at the location for visiting many beautiful spot near by, it was the quiet moments sitting on the back deck overlooking the pond behind the house which brought joy and peace to our hearts

Beautiful Escape in Mesa Verde country!

This property was large and comfortable for our family of 6, and the kitchen is equipped perfectly. Especially enjoyed fishing and canoeing the pond in the early mornings and later evenings, and caught a lot of trout and crappie. The owners are truly friendly people who are knowledgeable about the area, and our kids already miss their dog Beau. Highly recommend!

Awesome Place

This is a great place to get away and hide out. Off the beaten path but convenient enough to get everywhere (ruins, Durango, Silverton, OHV Trails, etc.), great wood cabin, fishing pond that is Stocked up and everything you need is provided. Lee and Peggy are great host. Really enjoyed talking to both of them. If you are wanting a place in Colorado this is it!!!! You won’t be disappointed.

Artsy cabin in the woods

We loved our stay at this is a quirky, artsy cabin in the woods. The location is stunningly beautiful--views of snow-capped mountains in the distance, the pretty little lake right next to the house, and the interesting old juniper, pinon, and ponderosa trees all around. It felt like we were in the middle of nowhere even though we we only about 5 minutes from the highway. A real highlight of the trip was the "Nature Walk" with Lee (one of the owners). We learned so much about the wildlife on the property, as well as a lot of other interesting information about the area. I wish we had done that on our first day instead of our last!

The “Lake” house

This was a family getaway. The cabin was quiet and the property was nice. The gardens and landscape were beautiful. We had planned to hangout during our stay and utilize the lake for fishing and canoeing as part of our experience and it was a bit disappointing that we didn’t have that option because the water was so low and no one informed us prior, so somewhat deceiving. We did do the Durango to silverton train ride and that was awesome as well as somewhat close by. We made the most of it but would have appreciated communication about the lake/pond being inaccessible.

A Quiet Place

The Lakehouse is definitely off the beaten path. Very quiet with a spectacular view of the lake and distant mountains as you sit on the deck and enjoy a morning cup of coffee or evening glass. May was a great time to visit. Weather was perfect and the birds were singing. The house is equipped with everything you might need to stay for awhile. Plenty of space for relaxing and reading. Lee and Peggy gave us privacy, but were available and quick to respond to any requests. The property has other VRBO rentals and the 2 person hot tub, canoes, and garden are for everyone to share. Located close to many interesting things to see and do. Mesa Verde is just up the highway and grocery stores are about 15 minutes away. I would definitely return! If you like quiet, this is the place!

Gorgeous experience

We really loved this place. It was peaceful and beautiful. The views of the lake and mountain were wonderful. I sat on the porch every morning drinking coffee with the hummingbirds and ducks. The kitchen had everything we needed for meals. My girls enjoyed the hot tub. The property owner was very responsive. The cabin itself is filled with charm, beautifully decorated, and you’re surrounded by beautiful gardens. The sunset was beautiful too. One thing to note for future travelers is that there’s not a lot of privacy since two of the bedrooms are partitioned off as opposed to rooms with actual walls. Also, I recommend checking in before it gets dark to navigate the route in more easily. We would definitely go back!

Beautiful in need of a little updating....

This is a tough review to write. Overall, this place is wonderful and magical. There are many positives. My children loved the pond and access to fishing gear and a canoe. That was a huge bonus for us. The property is lovely. The beds were very comfortable. The place is definitely older and rustic. We enjoyed spending time together as a family having dinner and playing board games. We were welcomed by the owner as we arrived and he made us feel right at home. Some suggestions I would make are definitely newer pots and pans. I like to cook and the pans were clean, but old and not many options. The furniture is very outdated at not very comfortable for sitting around to read or relax. The TV and DVD player were not working (could be user error) but we also found it hard to get comfortable to even watch anything. I would be more inclined to return if there were some updates to those two areas of concern.

A birder's dream with EV charging

This was our second springtime stay at the Lakehouse. Willowtail Springs is magical at this time of year (late March). We had big plans for our time in Mancos, but we had a hard time pulling ourselves away from Willowtail Springs. We took daily walks with Beau (the resident dog). Or maybe it would be more correct to say that he took us for walks around the property. We enjoyed the view of Hesperus Mountain over the lake. And we watched the ever-changing variety of birds in and around the lake. At one point, there were five blue herons fishing in the lake! And we saw them catch a couple of fat fish, which was a sight to behold! Every morning and evening the lake hosted several varieties of ducks (I counted 80-some of them on a typical evening). My wife and daughters also enjoyed "artist workshop" days when it was windy. One final note that's worth mentioning: there's a 30 amp (~3.6 kW) RV hookup on the property that can be used to charge your electric car, which is a welcome perk given the lack of Level 3 chargers in the area.

Dirty and lots of spiders.

The interior was very dirty. 1/10. Spiders here and there and lots of cobwebs , very dusty and dirt everywhere. Dirty bandaid stuck on the shower window, this place leaves very much to be desired. The kitchen dishes were dirty. The kitchen knives had old dried meat stuck to them. Very dated interior style, lights not working, and beds have old scratchy sheets. The driveway in is super small and really scratched up my paint on my vehicle just to get in to the property, there is no good parking available. Our stay was 4 nights here the cabin was very warm and it didn’t cool off at night enough to keep comfortable. The exterior was pretty awesome at one point, but now it’s way past that. The decks and balcony stairs are in really bad shape, they are dry rotted in places and very splintery and very unsafe to walk on the decks. Spongy spots on the balcony deck where 1 of our group’s foot almost went through. If you bring a small car, don’t mind staying in a dirty cabin with no a/c and the chance you won’t fall in the moss pond or put a foot or leg through the rotted deck, give it a shot.

Unique, serene, artistic, rustic retreat.

A unique getaway near Mesa Verde. We were sitting right on the water and although were were coming and going to see the sights we enjoyed meeting the artistic and friendly cast of characters. We utilized the large kitchen and dining room often as well as sitting in the great room reading after a long day and watching the shadows grow on the pond.

Why they chose this property

Willowtail Springs has become a wildlife property, bird sanctuary, and a water wonderland. Guests have access to the many paths and trails through this 60-acre nature preserve, including free use of canoes and fishing gear. Willowtail’s private lake serves as a fishing paradise for all skill levels, healthily stocked with trout, sunfish and large-mouth bass. Over 200 species of water birds, raptors, and songbirds have been identified at Willowtail. This is a bird-watchers paradise with owls, golden eagles, osprey, meadowlarks, Great Blue Herons, hummingbirds, chickadees, woodpeckers, warblers and more.

Fishing and Boating
Willowtail Springs is fishing heaven for those with any level of skill. Our private lake is stocked with brown trout, rainbow trout, large mouthed bass and sunfish, plus grass carp to keep the lake clean and healthy. We are a Catch and Release site so we use barb-less hooks. The large mouthed bass seem to bite at almost anything, which is fabulous instant gratification for children or adults new to the sport. Our fish are “on staff”. We find guests have a time getting their families off to see local sites because the lake and the boats are such entertainment. We have two canoes and a rowboat for guests to use plus casting rods and lures.
Since we own the private lake, you do not need a fishing license for any fishing you do here at Willowtail Springs.

Garden
Lush gardens are sprinkled about the grounds at Willowtail Springs. Guests enjoy exploring, often finding their own special place. Hammocks, benches and swings can be found throughout the gardens. The hot tub resides on a rock outcropping overlooking the lake with patio furniture and lounges. Tables and chairs placed in the middle of the gardens provide idyllic spaces for writing, reading or even computer work. Paths weave from the cabins through the gardens to the wildlife ponds and into more wilderness areas.

What makes this property unique

It might be impossible to pull yourself away from Willowtail’s serenity, but should the impulse arise, there’s no shortage of adventure to be found nearby. Just 6 minutes away is the Town of Mancos, with a grocery store, health food store, a bakery, brewery, family or fine dining restaurants, liquor stores, art galleries and quaint shops.

Steeped in Native American history, the Four Corners region pulses with culture, color and a fine collection of some of the country’s best-preserved archaeological sites. Willowtail sits a mere 10-minute drive from the entrance of Mesa Verde National Park. Farther West, explore Ute Mountain Tribal Park, the Canyon of the Ancients and Hovenweep national monuments. Cap the day off with wine at one or all of Cortez’s divine wineries.

Just a 30-minute drive from Willowtail Springs is the city of Durango and the inimitable Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. High alpine splendor, mining history and a feast for the senses will leave you hungry for downtown Durango’s fabulous array of world-class restaurants and award-winning breweries. Spend an afternoon wandering the variety of shops on Main Street.

Located on the San Juan Skyway, Willowtail and within easy access to the Southwest's best attractions: Mancos (6 minutes), Mesa Verde National Park (10 minutes), Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (30 minutes), Hovenweep National Monument (90 minutes), Telluride (90 minutes), Moab (2 hours) are all an enjoyable day trip away.
