This house sits in the middle of a hayfield, set 500’ or so back from the road. Very quiet, and a secure place to let the dogs play. The house itself is spacious and comfortable, and well-equipped, including heat-pump a/c and an excellent washer/dryer in the basement.
The Mabou area is always a treat: grocery, gas station and the Red Shoe Pub (very nice restaurant and music venue) all 5 minutes away. Mabou Mines sandy beach 10 minutes away.
Scotty (host) is very responsive and helpful.
Highly recommended.
Back for a second summer to rent this sweet house in Mabou. Scotty’s a gem, and the neighbourhood has everything you need: quick access to ocean beaches, Gaelic music and dancing every night, the famous Red Shoe resto, and the best stocked grocery, bar none, that I’ve ever encountered in a small town.
Stayed here for 2 nights during our 1 week trip to Nova Scotia the last week of June 2023. Nice home which was very much dog friendly. Was initially surprised there was no TV in this house, but that turned out good because we ended up playing board games and cards as a family.
A great 'home base' location with easy access to the Park and all of Cape Breton Island. Quiet house environment with well-equipped kitchen & laundry facilities, as well as being close to all amenities in the town-site. Thank you so much for your hospitality (and the goody basket ) Scotty! Would definitely stay there again if travel brings us this way again :)
Amazing property. Very convenient location for visiting Inverness County. Plenty of beaches, grocery store and liquor store nearby as well as places to eat. The home had everything you needed and more. Very clean. Sitting on the deck was so relaxing at the end of a day sightseeing or visiting family. I would highly recommend this home.
Our time in Mabou was an absolute dream vacation. Scotty's place was perfect, we couldn't have asked for a better place for our first trip to Cape Breton. The location was ideal for all the things we wanted to do - biking, beaches, music events. The house was clean, had everything we needed, and was exactly as described. Scotty was prompt in answering our questions. We'd love to return another year!

Nice area to visit
Okay place to stay. Location was fine to visit attractions on Cape Breton. Quite well equipped but visitors should know that there is no tv or hair dryer to prepare for their visit. Also there was no toilet paper when we arrived. We had visited a grocery store on our way in , but had to go out again to buy toilet paper. Surprising and inconvenient

perfection!
Scotty MacNeil was the ultimate host. He went way beyond what was required to make sure that my and my dog’s stay went well. The location of the house was perfect for our needs: two spectacular beaches within a ten- minute drive, wonderful restaurants, ceilidhs, and gift shops all up and down that coast. The farmers market on sundays and the ceilidh on the wharf in Mabou Harbour were added treats. The house was fully equipped, the beds were comfy the AC was much appreciated this hot summer, amd the wifi was reliable. I stayed for three weeks and would come back in a heartbeat. Best rental experience I’ve ever had bar none.
We totally enjoyed our second stay at this quiet, relaxing, pet friendly home. The home is conveniently located near several communities where you can eat, shop, immerse yourself in the local culture and music or spend the day at any of the multiple beaches in the area.
Since we had booked the property for 10 nights, we appreciated having a fully stocked kitchen which we used daily to cook Canadian and ethnic (curry) meals.
As always when staying at other people’s homes, we are aware and respectful of the home.
The day before checkout, we washed, dried, folded and put away any towels and cloths used up to this point.
Before leaving the pet friendly home on the morning of checkout, we swept the entire upstairs of the house and we mopped the kitchen, dining and living room floors. We washed all the dishes and put them away in their appropriate cupboards and drawers. We disposed of the kitchen garbage and the recycling appropriately. We emptied the fridge, filled up the ice cube trays and left a partial bag of ice and a few popsicles for the next guests or the owners.
On the morning of checkout, we left 2 bath towels, 2 face cloths, 1 dish cloth and 1 dish towel in the bathtub to be washed. The cleaner needed only to strip the bedding and throw them, the bathmat and front door mat into the laundry.
I hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did. Cheers!
We enjoyed our time in this spotlessly clean and very well equipped home.
High quality bedding, comfortable and new living room and little extras such as coffee, and snack.
A great stay in a beautiful part of the province.
Beautiful location and home - a quiet, serene setting!
We had a wonderful time at this property during our visit to Cape Breton and our journey around the Cabot Trail. A picturesque, serene setting made for easy, quiet evenings after a couple of long, busy days with my husband, myself and 3 kiddos. The heat pump worked a charm!
Scotty was highly responsive; we were traveling from New York (via a trip to PEI), so it was very much appreciated to be able to reach out and ask questions before we even started our trip.
The house is very well-kept and you can find anything/everything you need. Big bonus for the treat basket and access to a washer/dryer! We didn’t eat out in town (The Red Shoe Pub looked awesome, but it was just too busy when we were out and about), but found the local grocery store well-stocked.
Many thanks to Scotty and fam for sharing their home with us!
I spent 4 days hiking and exploring Inverness County and this VRBO location was the perfect launching pad. A handy and well provisioned grocery store nearby but no restaurants within 20 kms. If you are looking for a quiet , natural setting for your visit to Cape Breton, you will not be disappointed.
We spent two days at this property in early October. The rural setting is lovely and quiet but also close to the charming village of Mabou. The house has everything you need and our communication with the owner was excellent. We enjoyed our time exploring the west coast of Cape Breton from here!
This house was clean and provided everything you could want and more. It really was like a home away from home and the host was great to provide anything needed. We were low on propane and it was delivered prior to us needing it.
The location is amazing with wonderful beaches nearby in either direction.
We had a great stay and would stay at this location again!!!
Great location. Pet-friendly. We enjoyed our stay!

About the host
Hosted by Scotty MacNeil
My wife Jen and I were brought up in the small community of Mabou, NS and we now live in Halifax, NS about 3 hours away. We have two children, Carson who is 20 and attending The Royal military College in Kingston, Ontario and Olivia who is 14 and is attending highscool here in Halifax. Jen's parents live 500m away on their farm. We spend as much time in Cape Breton as possible during our free time. I am the owner of Breton Electric, a small electrical contracting company in Halifax and Jen works at The IWK Children's Hospital as a respiratory therapist.
Why they chose this property
We purchased this property in the spring of 2015 and decided to offer it as a weekly rental property. The property is located just one farm over from Jen's parents farm and so when it went up for sale we were anxious to purchase the property. We love spending time in the area due to the combination of rich culture, scenery, and the local people.
What makes this property unique
This home is a very simple home with all the amenities a family will need for a great vacation. It is set in a beautiful location that is very private yet close to all the services in the village.
