About this property

Killian House Retreat, 4br 2ba Relaxing Get away private home

This quaint home was built in 1953 and we have designed it as a quiet getaway spot for our family and guests. The Killian family has ties to the local history and FDR in Warm Springs. Now we are opening it up for others to enjoy.
We want to thank our guests for making a breakout year at the Killian House. We had a visit from Sam Killian III the son of the builders of the house. We had a writing group with published authors, three wedding parties, families of graduates, history buffs, and just great people.
The house is 1900 sq/ft and sits on a secluded 1.5 acre wooded lot on top of a hill above Warm Springs GA. We have seen deer, fox, and the always entertaining squirrels on the property. The tree surrounded lot is perfect for star gazing.

Common Areas
Cozy new furniture fills the rooms for long conversations or napping. The dining room seats 8 for candlelit dinners. The Den table is ready for snacks, games, and puzzles. Sit on the front porch with your morning coffee and watch the sun come up. The outdoor grill can prepare a large meal or just use the fire pit to roast marshmallows. Grab a snack and head to the back porch to talk and laugh as the sun sets. Killian House Retreat is the perfect quiet place to finish that research paper, spend time with family, work projects, girl's weekend, or wedding parties. There is room for private small retreats for work, school, or church.

Kitchen
The 50's style kitchen is newly updated but reminds your of Grandmother in her favorite spot. Bake your own cookies or have wine from the local winery with cheese to relax in comfort.

Entertainment
We have chosen not to have a TV in the Killian House Retreat. We use the house as a place to unplug, rejuvenate, and renew communications with each other. However, there is killer wifi with easy access all over the house. We created a blank wall and provided an easy to use video projector and speakers to experience that special movie, game, or cat video together.

Surrounding Activities
We are 15/20 minutes from Calloway Gardens. Many adventures await such as: Christmas Fantasy in Lights, golf, hiking, Gardens, Water ski events, Lakefront beach, Butterfly Gardens, and Treetop challenge course, biking, canoeing, and live raptor shows.
FDR's Little White House is 1 minute away just down the hill. The historic pools that helped FDR refocus his life and body before his political career are at the bottom of the hill below his house.
Take a tour of the Warm Springs Winery. The featured local wines are made from Scuppernong and Muscadine grapes. Taste the unique pepper infused "Hotlanta" wine.
The Roosevelt State park borders the property. There are over 40 miles of trails in the park. Many trails lead to waterfalls along the hike. Beginners to advanced hikers will enjoy the trails. The Liberty Bell Pool is a great place for a day of swimming after hitting the trails. Antique shopping is abundant in Warm Springs and the many surrounding small towns. Being further from a large city the "finds" are plentiful.
Restaurants abound in the local area. While we lost our historic Bullock House building, the owners have reopened in an historic downtown building. The food is just as good and the genuine welcoming nature of Warm Springs is still alive. Mac's Bar B Que is perfect southern fare. The Gardens Restaurant at Calloway makes for a beautiful night out. Only 30 minutes away is the riverfront in Columbus GA which offers 5 great restaurants along the beautifully restored walking park.

Home away from home

The house was decorated and ready for our family's Christmas stay. Tons of room for 7 people to spread out or get cozy. Hostess was very pleasant and accommodating but never bothered us. Really good price with plenty of amenities. We really enjoyed the house and feeling like we were in our own world but close enough to enjoy plenty of activities nearby. Thank you!

Barnhunt friends

3 Women attending a Barnhunt trial with our dogs in Pine Mountain. We are all from different cities so the home gave us a place to visit & relax in the evenings. Good restaurants close by. The beds could be more comfortable. The owners were very responsive and have been notified about our suggestions

A quick retreat from the Hurricane

We evacuated from Hurricane Milton and had a wonderful stay. The house had plenty of beds for everyone and was very comfortable. We enjoyed hanging out on the back deck and next to the fire pit. The weather was nice and cool in the mornings and evenings so we enjoyed the campfire each day and the smores! The kids explored in the woods surrounding the house. We visited the Little White House Museum and went horse back riding in the State Park.

Charming and Beautiful

We went with friends for a weekend getaway. It was supposed to be a very rainy weekend. I communicated with the host about changing the dates; however, we decided to chance it. The host immediately offered to look at alternate available weekends, and when we told her we were coming despite the rain, she sent links to several indoor locations and festival information. She was very kind and helpful, and responded quickly. The property is beautiful and although it never rained, it was too wet to enjoy sitting outside, it was quiet and the views are stunning. We saw some deer on the drive up to the property. The house reminds me of my grandma's house. The bed was comfortable and the rooms are decorated nicely. They also took extra effort to make sure you have everything you need for your stay. You will never miss t.v. There are also games and books to read. The location is very close to Warm Springs, which is so charming and full of kind people. It is an easy and scenic drive to Callaway Gardens and Pine Mountain. We plan to return!

Historic house in a small town

This is an older home in a quiet neighborhood. My only complaint was that the hot water went fast during a shower. Warm Springs is a small town do dining options in the late evening are slim.

Great Stay, Just like Grandma’s House

The house is as pictured. The rooms are homey, nice and comfortable. There were plenty of towels and the beds were clean and comfy. There was a fire pit also, which we did not use as it was windy. We enjoyed the porches for just being in the outdoors and nature. It felt very private. Very close to area attractions. We were lucky enough to get in Carriage and Horses for Friday night and it was delicious! The Bulloch house was very good as well. We hope to visit again!

The Killian House

We absolutely loved staying in theis getaway home, the adults enjoyed the stay just as much as the kids! The best part was NO tv, the kids played board games and ran around the yard the entire time! Couldnt have asked for a better place to stay! Will definitely be back! Many thanks!!

Okay

We enjoyed the atmosphere at the property, learning the history behind the Killian as well as the town of Warm Springs. There was plenty of room and it was quite comfortable. However the place could use a little TLC as far as upkeep and cleanliness.

Great Vacation

Located in the country you have privacy, and it is quiet. The woods around are beautiful. We were able to enjoy bonfires at night twice while staying there. Sitting on the porch, front or back, is such a wonderful experience and relaxing. Our grands did an early Easter Egg Hunt of Saturday and had a ball. Not having TV is an advantage. The house takes you back to a simpler time and has all the amenities you could ever need. When you enter the back door and open up the blinds you have a beautiful view. Perfect for eating and enjoying nature. Sleeping where it is so quiet is restful and the rooms are roomy. We highly recommend this if you are going to be in the area. We already miss it.

What a gem!

Cute, quaint, charming 1950s home in a great location. Boomers, If you love vintage and nostalgia this is the rental for you! I read the interesting history of Sam Killian and FDR in the info book left for guests. The house was decorated for Christmas and the dining room set up with china as if my Grandma had set the table. Our dogs liked the big yard and woods. Soft bed mattresses and plenty of towels. The owner left a gift ornament with a picture of Killian house on it for us. Thank you for this souvenir of a lovely stay in Warm Springs. As for sightseeing advice we enjoyed seeing the Red Oak covered bridge in Woodbury, the oldest and longest wooden bridge in Georgia. It’s a peaceful place take a picnic; there are tables by the creek. The best way to see the Fantasy in Lights at Callaway is to book tickets for the first trolley time at 6:00, arrive around 5:00 see the Santa shop and then board the trolley. Beautiful lights and music with caroling on board sure invokes the Spirit of the holiday. The ride took about an hour but by the time we walked out the crowds and long lines were evident! So glad we went early! If it’s too cold for the trolley on your chosen day you can always opt to be the first in line at 6:30 in the car lane. We will definitely be back. Thanks again to the hosts for offering their home for rental.

Cozy getaway in a beautiful setting!

We had a wonderful stay at this home just outside Warm Springs! There were games and books for kids and adults. There was a deer just off the back porch one morning. The home sits high on a the side of a small mountain and has beautiful wooded views in the front and back. We visited a couple of restaurants recommended by the owner and thy were both hits! This home is exactly as pictured. The owner was great to work with. She was super responsive and helpful. We went to Callaway Gardens for the Christmas lights on this trip. We are now talking about coming in warmer weather to visit Warm Springs and the Little White House.

Host profile image
I have taught special education in Cobb County GA for 15 years. I have taught 4 & 5 year old students in Sunday School for 19 years. Owning this house is a joy. Every time I go there I feel like I discover a new hidden treasure. Meeting my guests and finding out what appeals to them in the area is so much fun. I can see myself building this home and others into my second career.

Why they chose this property

I fell in love with this area after a girl's weekend to Calloway Gardens. No cabin in the mountains of north Georgia or condo at the beach would do. I had to have my cottage in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. I spent two years searching for the perfect combination of charm, comfort, modern convenience, and place of renewal. I have found it. I love being here to enjoy a glass of local wine, peruse the antique stores, hike, read, and spend time with the people I love.

What makes this property unique

This home is a history buff's dream. We found that the dining room lamp is a Tesla patented lamp design. It was has an electrical kit to convert oil lamp parts. We estimate that it was originally sold in 1893.
The front porch furniture is "Old Hickory" furniture from the 1920's originally built for the Meriwether Inn. The Inn was the first location of the Warm Springs Institute and later purchased by Roosevelt.
There is an historic photo of Sam Killian Sr., the Mayor of Warm Springs and FDR during the early days of FDR's rehabilitation from polio. The home was built by his son Sam Killian Jr in 1953. The property adjoining the site is owned by the Alcorn family. FDR was to attend a BarBQ hosted by the Alcorn's the day he died. Located on the adjacent site are the charred remains of the Alcorn family home which was built with wood taken from the Meriweather Inn when it was dismantled.
