Definitely a price performer! Located on a hillside away from the touristed areas with nice views. Loved hearing the myriads of birds singing in the mornings. Nice spots outside to relax and unwind. Really appreciated the fresh fruit as well!Is a bit hard to find the driveway after dark, although iPhone with Goggle Maps did just fine. 40 min. drive from the airport; 20 min. drive to Island Gourmet Markets at The Queen's Marketplace (good place for groceries and much more).Could use some sprucing up...
A little family of birds woke us up every morning as the sun came up. I learned they were Java finches! I sat and had coffee every morning with my Java birds.
First off, warnings…do not stay here if you’re expecting a lux experience, and be prepared for whatever the island throws at you. We came after a massive rain, and there was a cloud of mosquitoes chilling on the lanai. It did limit our ability to take advantage of the outdoor space. The accommodations are basic so you get to be creative with your cooking, but it’s all manageable. Now the goods…this place is far more like the air b n b’s of old, with an absolutely personable and responsive host and a quirky charm unique only to it. It’s a FABULOUS place and an absolutely great location for exploring the north Kohala coast. Come prepared to enjoy a remote and secluded spot for watching the flora and fauna of the big island!
Perfect studio for our low key stay. Garden is lovely. Quiet neighborhood. Place is clean with basic kitchen items. The welcome basket was well stocked. And several times throughout our stay we had fresh fruiting waiting for us in the morning. Great views of ocean. Nice breeze. Great location. If it rains expect some mosquitos but our hosts had plenty of options to help deter them. Would definetly stay again.
We loved it here and our hosts were fantastic!it was peaceful and quiet, a wonderful location and we had everything we needed. Thanks so much Mitsubishis and Curt!
From your breakfast table far up from the north coast, you can watch and hear birds and see a vast expanse of ocean, sky and the Kona coast. At dinner enjoy fabulous sunsets. Hosts are most welcoming and have some yummy fruit treats too. We had a most enjoyable second stay and hope to return!
The magical nature of this property cannot be overstated. The single room opens on two sides with sliding glass doors to a corner porch that offers a 130 degree panorama of the Pacific from a hillside vantage point in Kohala. Sleeping was magical with the doors open, stunning stars, and bird sounds as the dawn broke. It was a joy to meet our hosts, and we greatly appreciated the morning treat of cut mango and blueberries in the refrigerator. There is a wonderful tiki seafood bar for lunch and dinner in nearby Kawaihae. We hope to return.
We enjoyed three nights here after being warmly greeted by our hosts. Slept well each night after watching the sunsets and gazing at a sky full of stars. Mornings were for sunrises and coffee on the lanai. Mitsuko sent us off with a lovely fresh fruit plate and even snacks for the plane. Very thoughtful hosts and a lovely home/garden. I would love to stay again!
The view was breathtaking, and the surroundings were quiet and peaceful. The unit was substantially clean, and well aired out. The unit was interestingly renovated as there were 3 large sliding glass doors on the 2 exterior walls, but it worked out very well in providing phenomenal views and airflow. They were even lockable: the way to do it was to lock 2 of them from the inside, and then the 3rd one using a key from the outside.
Mitsuko and Curt were very inviting hosts; they personally greeted us when we arrived! On the second day, Mitsuko even cut a plate of fruits for us! Without us asking about a later check-out, she even told us that since they didn't have a new guest coming on the day we were departing, we were free to hang out for as long as we wanted until our flight!
There were tons of very cute birds and geckos, and their cat was living the dream life just staring at the ocean view. For sensitive sleepers, the birds can get pretty loud in the morning, when the sun comes up.
At night, the area is very dark, which is amazing for stargazing! I was able to see the Milky Way with my naked eyes, and even Venus' reflection shimmering on the ocean as it was starting to set. During the daytime, you can see Mauna Kea along with is observatories, Mauna Loa, and Hualalai all in one sweep. On the opposite side, you can see Maui. In fact, I think I even saw Haleakala Observatory with my naked eyes.
Mitsuko and Curt were amazing hosts. The property is very clean and functional. The views from the Lanai were just beautiful. We slept very well in the comfortable bed and the kitchenette had everything we needed. The location is in a quiet area on a steep hill. If you ride bikes, the location is incredible for riding the Ironman Hawaii road from Kawaihae to Hawi and back. There are some steep hills on the route, but none as challenging as the ride back up to the house from the main highway. Some 20% grades. Was awesome. Mitsuko and Curt were very gracious. They brought us fresh fruits and snacks almost daily and offered to share their Ahi dinner with us. Way above and beyond anything expected. They are just the nicest people you will ever meet. The property is beautiful and the views even more. If you're looking for a super nice place to stay on the North Kohala coast with super nice hosts look no more. You found it.

Location is in a very peaceful area with amazing views of the ocean, coastline and Mauna Kea. You need to figure out food options as it is remote but there was plenty of coffee and tea options in the room. A ceiling would be a benefit but the standing fan and air conditioner eventually cooled the room. The owners were very kind and helpful. Definitely recommended.
Curt and Mitsuko's place is a slice of heaven. The view is spectacular, and the songs of the birds and other wildlife in the morning is wonderful. Curt and Mitsuko are even better hosts, they gave us some local suggestions and treated us with a fresh fruit plate from their garden. Waimea and Hapuna are excellent nearby activities, we would absolutely stay here in the future!
Kohola Ranch is a special place, if you have never been. This studio had fabulous ocean views, and was well equipped for basic kitchen use, etc. The hosts were available, friendly, and very welcoming. My only wish was that there were ceiling fans in the unit. This would have been a plus. Also: If mosquitos like you, be careful at dusk and dawn. Due to the watering of the plants right in front, there were large amounts of mosquitos , which made relaxing on the Lanai a no-go for me.
Place is beautiful. Great ocean view with sunsets. Centrally located very near beaches and close to hawi and waimea towns. Close to great restaurants. Outstanding hosts who even provide snacks at check in. Peaceful and quiet neighborhood. We will definitely stay here again.
I loved Mitsuko's space. It is beautiful, peaceful, and a short drive to many gorgeous beaches. Most important, Mitsuko is kind and considerate and I felt completely at home and safe there. Also, we really appreciated the beach gear - big towels, snorkeling equipment, umbrellas (yes, you'll need them) and beach chairs. Thank you again for wonderful hospitality.
This was a restful Oasis in a quiet neighborhood. We plan on staying again. It was good for our soul. Thank you so much for opening your home to visitors to give them this wonderful experience!
Thank you, Mitsuko for being a great host and with a wonderful place to stay along the Kohala Coast on Big Island in Hawaii. She was most helpful and accommodating in our communications. Her place was better than expected with fabulous views of the ocean and volcanos. We most liked watching the sunsets from the multiple outdoor and covered lanai spaces. The location was good in proximity to many fine beaches and funky seafood bar restaurant in Kawaihae.
Her studio apartment felt cozy and private. The hosts were graciously quiet living above. It is beautifully landscaped adding much color and bird song. It was very clean and neat upon arrival. The large sliding glass doors with screens provided good air circulation and wonderful views from inside as well. The kitchenette was well stocked with equipment for light cooking. The unit was well equipped for beach activities.
We would happily use Mitsuko’s place again when visiting the NW part of the Big Island. Highly recommended for those seeking comfort, quiet and outstanding views. Cheers….

My husband and I stayed here at the very end of our two week trip to the Hawaiian islands for our 30th anniversary! Wow! It was so beautiful with the view of the ocean in the distance and with all the flowering bushes and trees in the garden right off the porch. We loved it here and wished we could’ve stayed longer! Our hosts Mitsuko and Curt were so gracious and told us they weren’t expecting any guests right after us and we could take our time checking out and let us come back after going to the beach, which was well after the check out time, to shower before heading to the airport! Thank you so much Mitsuko and Curt!!!

Cockroaches and No Security
The good news is this property has amazing views, including Hawaii's famous sunsets. The bad news is we found cockroaches in our unit. Being concerned they may travel with us to our next destination, we cleared out first thing in the morning without staying our second reserved night. We would have left immediately upon finding the bugs but there was nowhere else to stay in the immediate vicinity. Secondly, the only entrance to the unit is through sliding glass doors that cannot be locked except when inside the unit. There was no security for our belongings when we were not present. Finally, if you want a place away from everything, this is a good option but there is nowhere to eat. There were literally only two options for dinner on the Saturday night of our arrival. One place had no openings for three weeks, and the other had a live band with a cover charge. We were two weary travelers just trying to get a bite to eat. We immediately communicated with the owners when we found the cockroach. (They live above the rented unit.) We told them we were leaving in the morning. They claimed to have never seen bugs. We had to scramble at the last minute to find a place to stay on our last night on the Big Island and of course had to pay a huge sum for a last minute booking. The owners refused to provide any compensation for the night we did not spend in their unit. While you may enjoy the quiet and the view, beware of the bugs, security, and the owners. Oh, and bring your own food.
Situated high up the slopes of the north end of the island; from the porch one can enjoy a panoramic view that includes sea, both Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, and all of the Kona coast. The studio is located on the lower level of a private home, and the hosts are most generous with little snacks, and in our case even first aid!
Nearby are Spencer Beach, and an interesting ancient temple, other beaches along the north coast where whales can be seen. The town of Waimea has many restaurants and a farmers market mid-week. Kitchen is basic so don't plan on cooking any gourmet meals, just enjoy the peace, and watch the birds!
Comfortable little studio, in a quiet neighborhood with an awesome view! I would recommend bringing some mosquito repellent. Other than that everything you need is there. We had a great time!!
