Perfect Venue for a Girlfriends Getaway

We are six college friends of a certain age who all snore. It's not easy finding a six-bedroom house on the coast of Maine but Jonathan's family home in Cushing suited our needs perfectly. We especially enjoyed the magnificent dock and float, and the two living rooms provided plenty of space for conversation.

Prefect Accommodations with beautiful location. Tranquil setting.

It was absolutely perfect! There were 8 of us staying and the house and bedrooms were large enough to accommodate us all. 3 bathrooms were a plus. We never felt in each other’s way. Beautifully decorated. Peaceful and beautiful location. I would highly recommend it.

Serene

It’s rare when everyone is happy with a rental home, but we all were thrilled with the home. It has location, character, convenience and yet privacy. A big plus, all the mattresses were great. One thing we missed was a clothesline… It really was better than described, so thank you.

Beautifully located historic home

This property caught my eye while searching for places on the east coast. It was everything we thought plus more. The history and vintage decor made us feel comfy and at home. Plenty of space for gathering and with lots of spaces to seclude yourself too. Game nights or quiet reading time, both easy to achieve. The property was clean and well stocked. The property owner, Jonathan, was very easy to contact and a joy to converse with. He offered help when we had car issues which luckily we didn’t need. It was the perfect place for us to celebrate a retirement. (There were 6 sisters and 2 nieces) Please don’t hesitate to stay here cause I know we would again if we come back to the coast.

Lovely home

The house has a really lovely vibe. It felt really welcoming and each room was interesting and delightful. We were there for a week with my kids, parents, and brothers. There was plenty of space for everyone and good places for the entire family to gather together. Jonathan checked in just enough to make sure we had everything we needed. Would recommend!

Such a beautiful place! Such a great experience!

Wow! This property has spectacular views and beautiful light at all times of the day, looking across the water and the lawn. Nighttime brings brilliant stars over the water. Sunrise on the dock with a coffee in-hand...perfect. The privacy and peacefulness…serene. The home itself is a gorgeous, gracious place with a story. You can see the history with the character of each room. As you explore the house you can’t help but think of all the families and friends that have gathered over the years to appreciate a place of relaxation and simplicity. This home has many rooms from which to choose: queen-sized to full-sized beds to twin beds. Each room has a look of its own…and the pictures captured exactly how beautiful it was. While the home was too big for our small family, we would definitely keep it in mind for a larger gathering when times get back to normal. The home is family and pet friendly. We traveled with an 8 year old and two labs. There was something for everyone, even the children’s clubhouse down by the water. We brought games to play and books to read. Before we arrived, we thought we’d have a fire in the fire place, but we ended up not doing that, since the weather was warm and having a fire might have been too much trouble, but we’ll never know, since we didn’t try. Our child filled the rooms with piano music (which was tuned prior to our arrival!) each night...a delight. The kitchen is fully equipped – a kitchen made for those who love to cook. The appliances were a bit on the older side, but that was part of the home’s charm. We visited Marshall Lighthouse and Acadia, drove the coast, hiked/biked in the area, rode horses, enjoyed ice cream in Damariscotta, and stayed at the house playing frisbee, walking the shore, and relaxing. The owner was highly attentive and responded to every inquiry leading up to our arrival and when we were there at the house. We were prepared with what to pack due to COVID-19, like hand soaps, games, etc. He was helpful with questions about things to do in the area. There is also a useful binder in the home. The owner allowed us to store our bikes in the garage so we didn’t have to tote them with us everywhere. On the day of our arrival, he made sure an operating grill was available to us, which was purchased and installed the day before we got to the home! He was attentive and helped make our time relaxing and enjoyable. We look forward to going back again!

Maine Winter Paradise

Who goes to Maine in February? We did and this was the perfect place to stay. It was warm, comfortable, spacious, and the views were to die for. The morning light off the water and snow was like a painting. The WiFi was great for those who needed to work, the kitchen was well-stocked for cooking, and the owner was incredibly helpful. We will come back again in any season.

Unforgettable and special!

Staying in this beautiful home on the water was exactly what we needed in this difficult time. Our time in Maine was unforgettable, due in large part to the simple fact that Jonathan cares - this was more than just a place to sleep, it was an experience. Jonathan consistently went above and beyond to ensure our stay was comfortable, safe, and fun. He also gave us lots of wonderful recommendations for local activities and restaurants, and he was pro-active in staying on top of COVID safety guidance and precautions. Not only is there great water access directly on the property with unbeatable water views on both sides of the house, but the history of the place is palpable. The kitchen is fully stocked, internet was fast, there are 2 washers and 2 dryers, and there was plenty of room for our group to spread out and unplug when needed. We loved our lobster dinners, with lobsters from the local dock down the road, and nights around the piano. The location is also perfect - secluded enough to feel private and special but easy enough access to the towns of Rockland, Rockport, and Camden, and other attractions Maine has to offer. Highly recommend!

Fantastic week in Cushing!

This 1850s sea captain's house lives up to its reputation as a rustic yet very comfortable vacation home. It is spacious and has rooms for all moods and occasions, with appropriate furniture for lounging and dining inside and out. The huge lawn is great for croquet and other outdoor games. Gas and charcoal grills complement the well-appointed kitchen, and there are plenty of pots and pans for those who love to cook. Our seafaring family particularly enjoyed the location, with views of Maple Juice Cove on one side, and the St. George River on the other, and a dock that made it possible to enjoy a variety of boating and water activities. As advertised, the breeze between the two coves make it very easy to keep the house cool. Nature lovers will enjoy the woods for walks and the frequent visits by osprey, goldfinches, and terns, and if you venture out on the waters, you are almost certain to see seals.

A Perfect Dose of New England Charm!

Our family and visiting relatives occupied Chadwick House for a week. It was a slice of heaven! Gorgeous setting on the water, lots of charm in the rambling old home, plenty of room, fully equipped kitchen and pantry, remote setting yet close enough to everything you could want or need. Jonathan was an attentive host and made sure we were equipped with a spot on itinerary for collecting provisions along the drive in from Portland. We spent lots of lazy days reading, playing croquet, cooking and fishing from the deep water dock. We'd return in a heartbeat - it's a really special place! The kids were so enthralled no one asked for the TV. Don't miss Jameson Point Lobster Co. around the corner in Friendship. It might not be on the water, but the food was incredible, the owners so friendly and well worth the stop (or two).

Tranquility Base

We had a great stay, two weeks in this peaceful location and the decompression was almost complete before we had to return to the daily grind. This location is remote, quiet and very lovely. Thomaston is not Camden, thankfully, and Cushing is a far piece from Thomaston, so you're away from the bustle and flow that sometimes marks summertime Maine. Rockland has changed materially since I worked there 30+ years ago. Very cool. The house is aged, eclectic and comfortable - the pictures demonstrate it appropriately. Has the character of an antique saltwater farm with some modern upgrades. The owner is helpful, cheerful and very relaxed. His suggestion of Saturday breakfast at the Broad Cove Church was a great way to meet some neighbors. We had a wonderful vacation - next time I bring a boat.

A Painterly Scene From Andrew Wyeth

We rented the first week in September which gave us cooler temperatures and less tourist congested towns along Maine's mid-coast shorelines. The house is situated right on the water with spectacular views everywhere you look in a very private and secluded area. The only sounds one hears first thing in the morning are the commercial lobster boats heading out at first light and the local birds that inhabit the fields and forests. For art lovers there is the Olsen House Museum made famous by it's depiction in Andrew Wyeth's Christina's World only a few miles north of the rental house. The house owners are particularly attentive to guests and make sure everything is just right. The owner even had the piano tuned before our stay as my wife had inquired about wanting to play it. Now that's attention to detail. Lot's of interesting rooms in the house full of many generations collections over the years. The kitchen is well stocked with everything guests might need. Guests are greeted by a property manager who provides a tour of the property and all it's idiosyncrasies to ensure a safe and pleasant stay. Due to the vintage of the house the staircases are steeper than is typical and one needs to be mindful of that when using them. The rooms are plentiful and the furniture comfortable affording a relaxing and picturesque stay on one of Maine's most beautiful coastlines.

Picturesque coastal property offering relaxation and family fun

We are a family of 5 (3 teenage boys) and 2 dogs that recently stayed for 5 nights at the Chadwick House. Pros: Jonathan, the owner was very friendly, super insightful with restaurants and planning excursions. Best experience when dealing with him. The home is great! Very comfortable. Bedding beautiful and new. Kitchen was a dream to cook in! Pots and plans for lobsters and all sides! I could tell the owners took much pride in the property . Thoughtful to guests needs in most ways. House keeping was impeccable! The property is a dream. Unspoiled prestine coastline! The dock was a blast to swim off of. Kids loved the shore at low tide. Nature preserve down the road. Long hilly roads for bike rides. Cons: Property 1/2 hour from main drag, gets to be a bit much... The home at times felt a little to much like someone else's. Lots of personal items, although beautiful, took a little bit away from the feeling of being on vacation.

A home with history

We were a group of 8 adults visiting mid-coast Maine for our first time. We picked the Chadwick House because it could acommodate us and because of it excellent location. We were very pleasantly surprised that we were to experience a home full of history that was on display throughout. The property has a great waterfront ( a short walk through a meadow), and a wharf extending into the water that we enjoyed every morning and evening. There are all kinds of interesting pieces of art throughout (paintings, pictures, ironworks) and a cast iron barbecue that looks like a pig. We did not have enough time to visit all of the excellent restaurants and other venues that our host recommended. We did get to some (and they were well worth it). We especially enjoyed the lighthouse cruise out of Port Clyde. From the house we were within an hour's or less drive to Booth Bay Harbour, Rockland, Rockport, Camden, Lincolnville (for lobster at the Lobster Pound), and Freeport (the headquarters of LL Bean). Be warned that the home is an old farmhouse (built in 1850) and so it has its idiocyncracies - steep (by modern day standards) stairs for example, and showers (one very spacious one and a couple less so). The kitchen is very well equipped and there was enough room at the table for eating and playing board games (and imbibing). We are trying to get our group together for a visit next year.

Wonderful family home for families

We loved every minute of our stay at Chadwick House. It is clear that many years of family gatherings have happened here and it was magical for our family to gather there. We enjoyed walks in the garden and down to the dock. We ate several lobster meals gathered around the table. The owners were very attentive. They have a very helpful on site manager. If you are looking for a real home within close driving distance of the many wonderful experiences that Maine has to offer, please consider this rental.

Heavenly

I so enjoyed my stay in this cozy home. Sun drenched, cool breezes and steps away from a beautiful sail. While I really did not want to move from the house and water, the towns surrounding it are charming and filled is wonderful surprises like a Dahlia farm and the most delicious lobsters fresh from the morning catch. Pure heaven. Thanks.

Waterside retreat with Wyeth views

A quiet place with gorgeous views, but not far from Rte. 1 and Rockland, where we shopped at the farmer's market. My daughters raced the dog up and down the meadow to the shoreline while my wife and I relaxed, watching the boats. At night we lay back on the rocks by the dock and watched a meteor shower. It was a lovely respite, a chance to show my girls the Maine I remember from the summer when I was ten - but with modern plumbing and kitchen!

Host profile image
Our family has owned Chadwick House since the 1960's. Starting in 2015, we have served over 100 families, retreats and small groups.

We strive to offer a safe, relaxed and reasonably priced haven for families and groups to reunite, recharge and explore in these uncertain times.

Why they chose this property

The main sections of Chadwick House were first built in 1845, we think. Additions came in 1920's and the 1990's. The build is mix of handcut logs, traditional framing, and modern plaster.

We moved here here because we are morning's drive to all Maine's major attractions: Acadia National Park, Portland, and interior mountains and lakes. And we are day's sail to some of the most beautiful sailing and cruising destinations on earth.

We have always loved this private with open fields, bold granite ledges and cold 11-foot tides sweep up and down the Georges River. But we found that by adding super-fast web access, disaster resilient power back up, and advanced weather modeling, we could a offer as safe and storm resilient location for families, groups and remote works to to reconnect during trying times.

What makes this property unique

Lovely location. Proven track record for providing safe and clean housing. Enormous private studio space for groups and retreats. Excellent Web access and full-house power back up.
