Relaxing stay

Folly Cottage is beautiful. Everything we needed, very comfortable and homely. Owners were very communicative before we arrived. Log burning fire an added bonus, with plenty of fuel.

Lovely!

A characterful little cottage, delightfully situated. Internet reception not really good enough for TV, but who wants to watch telly in the midst of such natural beauty? There's a well stocked village shop just 20 minutes walk away – most days they even had the Guardian. We had a lovely time staying here; the owners were very helpful and friendly.

wonderful stay

The Folly is what you expect of a country cottage. Sarah made sure the cottage was clean and everything we needed was there. The view is amazing!!!!! Beautiful garden buzzing with pollinators. Also such a lovely family that you stay with ... nothing is too much trrouble, they give suggestions on what to visit or where best to shop. As a bonus a daily cuddle with the dog. When you're over 1.70m practise ducking for the quaint low door frames :-). We had a lovely time.

Cute cottage — fabulous setting

So the drive up to this cottage is perhaps a little hairy, but lovely setting high on a hill. Highlight for us was sitting outside around dusk, watching and listening as the sun goes down. We saw and photographed hummingbird hawk moths immediately outside cottage. Accommodation is cosy and comfortable. No issues with WiFi — worked fine. As with many old cottages, staircase is steep and a little challenging. Couple of nice pubs and general store down in the village, within comfortable walking distance. Very much enjoyed our stay here.

Views to make your eyes pop

The Folly is a small cozy cottage will outstanding views. We were able to sit for hours just looking and watching the wildlife go by including deer, foxes, weasels, buzzards, owls, kestrels, mandarin ducks and green woodpecker to name just a few. Stunning scenery and a lovely village. Richard and Sarah were fantastic hosts and allowed us to feed the lambs and chickens. Loved it here. .

Great spot for a getaway

The cottage is lovely, in a beautiful location and a perfect spot for a short getaway for two. We visited Hereford, Ledbury, Symonds Yat and the Weston cider brewery, and it was a handy base for getting to all of them quickly. The village is a short walk down the hill (bring a torch!) and has a couple of decent pubs doing good food. The cottage itself is very cosy. There's a big TV, and a wood burner in the front room which was set up ready to light and was just what we needed after a long day out walking. The information from the owners included a wifi code, but there was no wifi available during our stay, and the general mobile phone reception is poor. This wasn't really a problem as we planned our days beforehand, and to be honest, the break from constant wattsapp and email messages made the break all the sweeter, but it's something to be aware of. The bed is very comfy - we had two very good nights sleep - and the kitchen has everything you need. All the rooms have electric heaters. The cottage garden has to be seen to be believed, straight out of a storybook. If you like stargazing, the skies are incredibly clear. Overall, this was a wonderful location for a break, handy for everything and very welcoming. We will book again if we return to this area.

A beautiful hideaway deep in the hills of Hereford.

I came here with my 8 year-old for the weekend and enjoyed lovely local walks (saw some deer a few times), a great carvery at the Bunch of Carrots pub, an afternoon of canoeing along the Wye, and cosy evenings by the fire. This cottage is perfectly situated for those wanting to get away from technology (there's next to no signal!) and embrace the countryside. The interior is decorated nicely and the bedroom has good views across the hills. Thank you, we'll be back!

Peace and tranquility in the Wye Valley.

A lovely cosy cottage for two, overlooking a beautiful valley and the Wye river itself. The cottage overlooked a lovely garden full of flowers where we spent a lot of time relaxing and watching the wildlife, including fallow deer and lots of birds. Sarah and Richard, not forgetting Dougie the very friendly dog, were excellent hosts with lots of local knowledge ready to pass on. They also had very clever hens who left eggs very neatly gathered together on the doorstep on more than one occasion. The cottage was ideal for two, well equipped and very comfortable. Constant 30c plus temperatures made it even better. The Forest of Dean (inc heritage railway), Symonds Yat, Ross, Hay, Hereford and Monmouth are within easy reach and all worth a visit. Thanks for the wonderful week.

Compact cottage in beautiful surroundings

A beautiful setting, with lots of walks direct from the house and a selection of pubs within 45 minutes walk. Cottage ideal for 2, with most of the basics provided. Narrow staircase, so not suitable for those with any manoeuvrability issues.

Cosy little gem.

Lovely peaceful cottage on the side of a hill overlooking the Wye Valley. Warm, friendly welcome from the owners and dog, Dougie. Great place to stay to recharge your batteries.

Richard and Sarah are both self employed. Richard has a business called Bugs and Beasties and creates space for nature play and learning in school grounds. He also gives talks all over the country geared around gardening for wildlife. Sarah is a researcher with an expertise in social policy. Sarah loves her horses and Richard is a mad keen fisherman. We have a wicked veg patch (most years!!) friends and guests often enjoy some cheeky treats from the garden. We like to make sure visitors have everything they need whilst leaving them in peace. We produce our own lamb from our few badgerface and ryeland sheep and have the tastiest eggs from our friendly hens. We have a bit of a lifestyle thing going on here and its really nice to share this beautiful place with other people!

Why they chose this property

The folly is only 15 minutes from the M50 and 15 minutes drive from Hereford City but we are a million miles away from street lights and traffic noise. We are only a 10 minute walk from the pub, shop and River Wye , but on the other hand we are set in a rural paradise with only the sound of bird song and bleating of sheep! The wildflower meadow is one of the best preserved in the county. We have fabulous elevated views and the novelty hasn't worn off in 11 years. Fownhope is a cracking friendly village. Great pub nightlife, fab well stocked shop. We can step out of the garden onto miles and miles of deserted footpaths leading to a world of natural beauty. It took us many years to find The Folly with its lovely warm south facing aspect and astounding views over real unspoilt countryside

What makes this property unique

The countryside here is unique. The Silurian limestone that forms the Woolhope Dome makes for a wonderfully biodiverse landscape. Visitors can witness a beautiful tawny owl fly over their heads on the edge off dusk whilst enjoying a beer or glass or wine on the terrace outside the cottage or watch a herd of deer graze within throwing distance from the accommodation. The cottage is truly authentic, and retains its original charm and character whilst full refurbishment make for a comfy stay. Visitors often enjoy some tasty veg from the garden or fresh hen eggs for breakfast. We have horses and sheep to say hello to and if visitors ask in advance we are happy to book pubs or restaurants or find out what you would like to know to make their stay as lovely as it can be!
