About this property

Family villa & retreat - well-supplied, heated infinity pool, 50 acrs near Céret

Traditional Catalan farmhouse, transformed by its owners into a cherished family house and renovated to high standards, with limestone tiled bathrooms, stone floors, Catalan antiques and ironwork, amazing views, perfect serenity and original artwork. It has two unique double bedrooms overlooking the mountains, with one freestanding bath and 2 walk-in showers.

Due to its cool air and stunning vistas, and its adjoining buildings were the summer retreat of the 19th c. Bishop Soubiranne (his palace is in the center of Ceret).
Arrive via a winding mountain road (15-20 min/5 miles from Ceret), past deep ravines and ravishing views. A private road provides access, and the Mas nestles among old stone terraces, meadows, and oak and sweet chestnut forests.

Rare privacy, real wildlife, spring water and pure nature with close proximity to Ceret!
The Mas has a well so no water issues. It is equipped stainless steel kitchen and master bedroom with antiques and a freestanding bath plus walk-in shower. An artisan-designed spiral staircase leads to a spacious double height 'sejour' with fireplace and antique desks, and on this level there is also an ensuite double bedroom. A video player andTV are provided with complimentary videos.
Level three is a mezzanine with French country beds.
The outdoor terrace has a full-size dining table shadowed by grapevines and jasmine and also boasts two large figs and a BBQ.
A brief uphill walk leads to a landscaped stone terrace and 6 x 12m, heat pump-supplied infinity pool. A pool house with a small kitchen area allows for spellbinding poolside dining as the sun sets behind Mount Canigou. There is a separate wood-fired grill area and the large pool terrace also offers umbrellas, sunbeds and the shade of giant oaks. Large parties and weddings have taken place here, but you will have it to yourself.

There is a tree fort and benches throughout the property, which comprises four hectares of meadows and 18 of forested land.

Many mountain walks are possible straight from the breakfast table. Equally perfect for family gatherings or quiet contemplation, this property offers satellite internet and a barn with table tennis.
The location of Mas Soubiranne is invariably cooler at 700 m above the valley, yet the town is perfectly accessible for dinner reservations.

The owners heroically plant and maintain rustic gardens around the property favoring primrose and wild roses, fig trees, olives, laurel, hydrangeas, oleander and copious lavender. In the springtime the cherry trees are laden with fruit. There are also apples, plums and quince on the stone terraced orchards as well as walnuts and chestnuts.

Beautiful nature gateaway
Thank you for a beautiful nature experience in the mountains The kids especially loved the gorgeous pool and that amazing views. Only thing is that we got lost at 11pm trying to reach the house in pitch black darkness on mountain Road, with the map pointing out the middle of nowhere, and nobody to answer the phone and give us help. It was quite a stressful experience and best avoided by checking in during the day

Stunning view
This house is perfect! The swimming pool was the initial reason for booking and is even better than the photos. The house had plenty of room and all of the stuff needed by families. The pool is set further up the mountainside than the house to get the view and has a separate pool house with loo, kitchenette and its own bbq area. We used both areas for bbqs and both were brilliant. The local area has lots to offer, including the art museum, local markets, a lake for climbing and water sports and beaches. Overall, we had a wonderful holiday in a perfect property!

Absolutely fabulous
What a beautiful place La Mas is. We totally loved our week long stay. The pool is sensational and we spent almost all of our time in and out of it. The views are sublime. The house itself is lovely and brilliantly well equipped. We could not have asked for more. Thank you for having us. We felt very privileged and lucky to have enjoyed this place.

Beautiful spot
We had a wonderful holiday at Mas Sobirana. The views, especially from the infinity pool, are spectacular. It takes your breath away each time you see it. The house is also really lovely: it has rustic charm combined with a very well-equipped kitchen. The only issue we had was the heat at night, which I believe was highly unusual. Usually the mountain air cools the house down in the evening but the weather was so excessively hot that it ended up be very warm inside at night, which is obviously not ideal for sleeping! The gorgeous Catalan town of Céret is only about 15m drive, and well worth visiting. We had a superb lunch at Fred’s in town. The drive between the house and Céret is very windy - as you’d expect - but perfectly straightforward if you drive carefully.

Emplacement splendide

We had a lovely time at the house, thoroughly enjoying the pool, the views, the cooking and eating arrangements, especially the well equipped kitchen. The house has a great blend of sunny and shady spots and is really relaxed. Excellent walks to hand for the more energetic. We would love to come back!

Enjoy.

This is a unique and charming property with every amenity one could want
Every morning you waken at this Mas is silent, and filled with the fragrance of flowers and then with birdsong. It is a totally private refuge, yet only a 15 to 20 min drive (with gorgeous views) to the village. The property is extensive. There are 2 barbecues and a pool house in addition to the main house. We spent most afternoons and evenings by the infinity pool enjoying the view. The house is beautifully decorated with interesting antiques and artwork from the area. Much to do at the beach and in neighboring towns but in the heat of summer 2018 we were so relieved to enjoy the cool mountain air at Mas Soubiranne and leave the traffic and crowds of the valley behind. Great value for the money spent. Don't rely on Internet streaming as the amount is limited, but do prepare to teach the kids about butterflies and wild boar tracks, ripening chestnuts and apples and how water comes from a spring. A wonderful and rare holiday home.

Gorgeous place to stay
6 of us (4 adults, 2 children aged 6 and 8) visited for a week at the end of August and had a really fantastic time. The property itself is lovely: great, well-equipped kitchen, spacious bedrooms and huge lounge area. We spent a lot of time up by the pool, the views have to be seen to fully-appreciate them, and sitting outside reading. A lovely relaxing place. It's definitely off the beaten track, about a 15 min, at times precipitous, drive from Ceret, a town we all loved (particularly the boys who spent half their time in the crystal shop or camping out at the creperie). We visited Girona (about an hour away) and ventured over to Collioure although it properly hosed it down that day. It's a great base for visiting loads of places and I'd love to return. In the meantime we all have lots of happy memories to remember.

A stunning villa, with breathtaking views over the Pyrenees.
The villa is super comfortable and well equipped with beautiful infinity swimming pool. A great base for exploring French Pyreenes and northern Catalonia. Set 20 minutes up the mountains from Ceret, it is a perfect retreat from city life, but you do need a car that can handle the path up to the house!

Beautiful house in an magical place
We were two families (total of 7 persons, with children 12-16 years old) staying a week in June. We enjoyed every second of our stay. The house is charming and very well equipped. Everything we needed was there, and more. And everything seemed chosen with love. We had our meals under the pergola outside the kitchen, looking out over the mountains. The pool area is amazing, with stunning views. We planned to do hiking, but it was too hot (july temperatures in June), we took some nice morning walks instead. There are trails just outside the property. It is a quiet and beautiful place in the middle of the wilderness. And with the nice little town Ceret (don't miss the saturday market!) within 20 minutes drive down the mountain (a bit scary!). The sea is also not far away, and we spent two days exploring the little coastal towns (our favorites: Coulliore and Banyuls) and the nearby beaches (Paulille was our favorite, with two nice restaurants). We found the listing of Mas Soubiranne accurate. The property was clean and very well maintained. We would definitely recommend this property to friends and relatives. We hope to come back!

Stunning mountainside house
We enjoyed a three generation holiday in this beautiful, traditional French farmhouse with its modern but impressively sympathetic interior. The house set up was all that we needed and more besides; a lovely terrace for outside eating and reading with a much higher and more dramatic terrace adjacent to the swimming pool. The pool itself was very cold as it was only opened for the season during our stay but this did not stop the children from spending their time there. The views from the pool over Canigou are stunning and we enjoyed a few sun downers there. The road up to the property is a bit alarming at first but ok if you drive carefully - there are lots of passing spaces and actually not much traffic. We found Ceret difficult to navigate during our first day and got slightly lost finding the property, however, like all places, it was easy to find when you know how! Wifi wasn't functioning, much to the annoyance of the teenaged members of the party..we also found Wifi difficult to access in the town too but there were lots of good things to do in Ceret and some delightful restaurants for lazy lunches. We would happily holiday here again, in fact some of us would quite like to move in permanently!

gorgeous views from the pool
We had a fantastic and very relaxing holiday here. The house is lovely, and well equipped, with comfortable beds, everything you need in the kitchen and great showers. The living room is huge with big sofas and an open fire, which was very welcome when the cloud came down (2014 was a bad summer). It is, as you can see in the photos, close to the house in front, and the neighbours weren't very thrilled when our children played noisily in the small front garden. But the pool - set well behind and above the house - was (seemingly) out of their earshot and we spent fabulous days up there, enjoying the astonishing view. It's a bit of drive into town - the charming Ceret - but that was fine as we didn't feel the need to leave very often. For those that do want to leave, and who have children, I'd recommend the swimming lake just outside Ceret. There's loads of space there; you can swim for free, or pay to whizz across the water on a zipwire.

Family break to Ceret
The property is amazing - very well equipped and plenty of room for a family of 5. Our favorite spot was the pool and the pool area. You can happily while away most of a day there. The pool is generous in size so plenty of room for three children to be jumping in and out of and the views from the terrace are quite simply breathtaking. It takes a good 20 minutes to drive down the mountain to Ceret which is a lovely town with lots of character and a trip to the coast takes just under an hour to reach. A very relaxing holiday and a beautiful spot in the world.

An exquisite and unique holiday home
An exquisite and unique holiday home - which gave us an unforgettable week in the sun - a beautiful and exciting farmhouse conversion of grand proportions, with extraordinarily attentive owners, plus a manager in the local town of Ceret, close at hand for local knowledge and help. The location is astonishingly beautiful. Wonderful walks. Delicious fruits for plucking. Altogether, great for the spirit, for the family and for the health. Couldn't ask for more. Refreshingly far from the madding crowds - peace to enjoy the mountains, air and delicious foods of the region. A rare gem. As for the salt water infinity pool - how will any other pool compare? What luxury! Best kept a secret!.....

About the host

Host profile image
Amidst raising a young family and pursuing two careers as medical doctor and climate change specialist in London, Martin and Karen, a British/American couple, have worked very hard and over many holidays to create a high quality, original, and welcoming property which celebrates local materials and Catalan style. We bought the property in 2004 as a lasting gift to our three children and to family generations to come. We enjoy teaching our children about nature in the wild Pyrenees, much as we do on our sailing vacations. We also love the deeply-rooted local customs and culture in vibrant Ceret and its surrounding landscapes of sea and vineyards. Our French house has become an oasis for us: it is a great pleasure to see that our guests also find the luxury of serenity at Mas Soubiranne.

Why they chose this property

We bought the property as a leaky hovel in early 2005. It was a rare chance to buy 50 acres of mountain property, along with its pure well water and rich earth. The mountains and sea offered huge possibility for sports, skiing and exploration, enticing for a young family with boys. The road leading past the Mas travels up over the old route to Spain, & we love taking Alpine walks above the French and Spanish coastline. The terraced farm still produces cherries, apples, apricots, plums, chestnuts, and walnuts; mushrooms abound. We believe that conservation of our land is a serious responsibility, and we will introduce solar power to make it energy self-sufficient. At the same time, we have easy access to the culture and history in the towns and cities below, as well as to London and Europe.

What makes this property unique

Some of our favorite activities include cultivation and landscaping of the property; hunting enormous beetles and butterflies; picking cherries from our trees - perhaps to be sold in the cherry festival; cooking extravagantly with home grown herbs, mint and lavender; dining at the pool at twilight; visiting our neighbour, a widely exhibited and popular Catalan artist who will show you his work and studio; buying fois gras from the mas below; hiking down the mountain to Ceret; watching Sardanne dancing in the streets; buying anchovies in Collioure; watching the stars come out and listening for owls and wild boar with the kids. Lots of time for reading and swimming in the infinity pool, which some call the best in Ceret!
