About this property

Traditional Croft House with Spectacular Views over Beach and Mountains

Airebroc - a self-catering holiday home set in some of the most lovely scenery in the Western Isles

Looking out over the hills surrounding Uig Sands, Airebroc is a stone-built croft house at the edge of Uig Sands, one of the most beautiful beaches to be found in the Outer Hebrides. TripAdvisor reviews of Uig Sands say:

'This was one of the most beautiful areas I have ever seen. The beach is something else, but all of the surrounding areas are fabulous as well - the cliffs, the water, mountains. Truly amazing. '

'A huge golden beach, fringed by mysterious, dark mountains. '

'as remote as any place can as good'

The village of Crowlista is in a remote location and it is easy to feel you have ‘really got away from it all’. Nevertheless, there is an excellent shop for groceries a mile away at Timsgarry, and there is a community centre which hosts ceilidh dances and dinners at which visitors are warmly welcomed. It also houses a local history museum and a cafe which provides homemade soups and home-baked cakes throughout the day. There are also three other restaurants within 3 miles.

Airebroc has lots of comfortable sofas where you can enjoy the view, or relax and unwind in front of the fire after a day on the beach or walking in the hills. It is furnished in a traditional style retaining the old wood-panelled walls, and a wood burner in the main living room, whilst also providing all modern comforts, with ensuite bathrooms and plenty of hot water from a newly installed central heating system.

Ground floor

• Kitchen fully equipped with Britannia range cooker (gas hob, 2 electric ovens), microwave, fridge freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, and dining table that seats 8
• Living Room with woodburning stove, Smart TV and DVD/Bluray player, HiFi with Ipod dock, 3 sofas to seat 9.
• Study with piano, games cupboard, Morso Squirrel stove, and desk overlooking bay with large screen chromebox for internet browsing available for visitors
• Sun Room seating for 8, with stunning views of the bay and beach. Light, warm, peaceful - ideal for reading, talking, relaxing
• Single bedroom (with WC and basin next door)
• WC and hand basin next to bedroom
• entrance lobby with coat and boot storage area

First floor
• Front double bedroom with ensuite basin, corner bath and WC. Views east to Uig Sands, Uig Lodge, Suainaval and other mountains.
• Front double bedroom (with additional single bed) with ensuite basin and WC. Views to Forsnaval and Traighe nan Sruba (Cockle Bay)
• Back double bedroom (with additional single bed), next to main bathroom. Some of the best views in the house: the Atlantic, and the Uig mountains.
• Family bathroom with bath/shower, basin and WC.

Facilities
• Rangemaster cooker with gas hob and 2 electric ovens
• microwave, fridge and freezer, kettle, toaster
• full supply of crockery, cutlery and glasses, the kitchen is well equipped with utensils, blenders etc.

• radio with CD player and sound system
• bed linen, towels and soap provided
• Cot and high chair available
• Local maps, guide and history books
• Weber Barbecue

Garden

In front of the house there is a terrace where the barbeque can be used, and two large flower beds, and a lawn, with two stone lintel seats and a bench overlooking the bay. From the lawn a grassy path leads down to front gate, from where it is only a 200m walk to the beach.

At the back of the house, the kitchen looks across to the meadows behind the house out on to the Atlantic, and to the byre which used to house the cattle and sheep kept on the croft, but which has now been modernised. There is a gravel drive, and plenty of parking space on the drive and next to the road.

Local Activities

Walking - fabulous views from local mountains, huge Uig Sands in front of house to explore, dramatic coastal walk behind the house to lochs and iron age settlement remains,
Swimming - in the sea, or under the bridge on far side of bay at low tide - can be quite warm in summer.
Fishing- trout fishing in local lochs is free. Stornoway angling societies provide lessons.
Birdwatching – gannets, fulmars, sea eagles, and migrating waders on the beach
Sailing - slipways at Miabhaig and Valtos to explore the extensive sheltered waters of Loch Roag
Boat trips - Seatrek, based at Miabhaig for day trips to offshore islands such as Pabbay and Scarp, and further to St Kilda
Kite surfing and kite buggying on Uig Sands
Restaurants - Auberge Carnish, The Old School House, Baille na Cille Hotel

Wonderful stay in perfect location
We loved staying at Airebroc. Weather wasn’t ideal but the location and comfort of the house was just perfect. After being out all day most days , it was the perfect base to return to and relax. I’m writing this review on the ferry home and I’m already missing that sun room. Loved it.

Comfortable house in a beautiful location
Although perhaps not as luxurious as the pictures suggest the house was extremely comfortable and homely. The sun lounge was a particular delight with its views across the bay with wading birds and eagles (sea and golden) for good measure. The kitchen / dining room was extremely well equipped.

Wondeful cosy cottage overlooking Uig sands
This is a very special house in a very special place. The sands are extraordinary. The Uig area alone has more than enough to hold attention for a week or more. The local shop is a boon…& the house couldn’t be cosier, better equipped or more delightful to stay in. Helena was a very informative ans extremely responsive host

Great place, phantastic area, warm and individual holiday home
We stayed for a week in Airebroc as a family of five with younger kids. We very much enjoyed the quietness of the place and the phantastic surrounding. The house is spacious and friendly. Different from many other holiday homes the owners have created a special place that makes you feel that it once was a real home and it still breathes the atmosphere from that time. As fine food lovers the excellently equipped kitchen allowed us joyful meals. We really liked to stay there and can fully recommend the place for a family holiday "out of the world".

Perfect location and views
The cottage is ideally located for exploring the Isle of Lewis, but a car is essential. We also explored Harris from here, a long day but well worth it. The cottage has 8 bed spaces although that would be rather cramped. We were 4 & comfortable. Kitchen rather tired but well equipped, but only 5 chairs + high chair for 8????). Great to be provided with basic essentials eg olive oil, pepper & salt mills, porridge, dishwasher tabs etc. (see owner's list) Beds quite comfortable. Wardrobe space in 1 bedroom only, but plenty of drawers. Sun room fantastic views - great for chilling any time of day or night. This goes a long way to justifying the price, however we felt the cottage would benefit from an internal freshen up of the paintwork and some items of furniture. Overall a great place to stay.

About the host

Host profile image
We are based near London in Kingston upon Thames, we are a musical family, we enjoy cooking, these things are reflected in the house with a few musical instruments and good cooking equipment. There is also a quite well equipped sewing box, and some paints. We have used Airebroc as a family retreat, while our children were young, so it still has a well equipped toy cupboard, now for our 5 grandchildren and our guests. We love sharing the place we have loved, we enjoy the interaction with our guests, who seem to enjoy it as we do.

Why they chose this property

The Uig Bay with its immense sands surrounded by mountains is a spectacularly beautiful place, and walking across the beach and along the coast line behind the house is wonderful. We have the convenience of the brilliant local shop only a mile away, and a real sense of community in the area.

What makes this property unique

The house looks over the Uig Sands, and its front sun room enjoys wonderful views in 3 directions, and is always warm and a great place to have drinks in the evening, be quiet and read or play with excellent light during the day, and watch the weather when it gets stormy. It is a short walk to the beach in front which at spring high tides is deep enough to swim in, and we have a boulder beach at the back only 5 minutes walk away where we also swim, plus varied coastal scenery straight from the back of the house, with inlets where you can usually find seals and small lochs and old mill streams to explore.
