About this property

Family Friendly Spacious Comfortable Cottage and Garden. Rural and relaxing.

Next door to the main house at the former farm of Le Hamel Roger lies Kestrel Cottage. Part of the cider barn attached to the house has been renovated to create this spacious & comfortable self catering cottage. With many Original Features and all modern amenities it's a wonderful place to relax. It's great for families with plenty of space and lots to do on site and close to Kestrel Cottage.

Set in 1 acre of enclosed gardens with views across the valley, it's a great garden for playing, relaxing or alfresco dining. We have a fully fenced above ground 5m solar heated Swimming pool & an indoor Play Loft which has toys for our youngest guests through to teens.

We are an English family and live next door in the farmhouse. We can be on hand if needed or wanted and can run activity sessions for children.

There are miles of tracks on our doorstep so it's a great place for people who enjoy nature and an easy drive when you want a trip out.

Kestrel Cottage has a large living room with French and English telly, plenty of comfortable seating, games, books and a fireplace. An archway leads through to the dining room with seating for 10 and the well equipped kitchen. There is a downstairs shower room.

Upstairs you'll find a large landing area with sofabed, Tv (for dvd's) toys and games. You can use it as a playroom, quiet space or an extra bedroom. On the same floor is the family bathroom, a twin room with two single beds and a wooden cot and a double room.

Up again and you'll find another double bedroom and twin room with two single beds and space for another mattress to accommodate extra children. All the bedrooms have got wardrobes or hanging rails, drawers or shelves, lamps, bedding and bed linen.

Outside there is plenty of parking in front or behind the cottage. There is a table-tennis table under the shelter of a barn. There is a 'dustybarn' with lots of toys for creative, imaginative, adventurous play. There is a hammock, climbing frame, sandpit, swingset, playhouse, football goals, basketball hoop and large trampoline with safety net, fixed BBQ and outdoor furniture including a chiminea.

Friendly for us, fabulous for our childre
We came to stay at Kestrel Cottage with another family - there were six of us in total, including two toddlers. Throughout the entire process Angie couldn't have been more helpful and friendly, and this extended into and beyond our visit. The cottage itself is lovely - it was spotlessly clean when we arrived and had plenty of room for us all. There were toys on the play landing which was great for the children, and the toddler bed and large cot bed made it a home from home for our little ones - we didn't have a disturbed night for the whole week we were there. The garden and outside space is wonderful - you're surrounded by farmland so really do feel that you're getting away from it all! The space came fully equipped with outdoor toys (playhouse, ride-in cars, trampoline, paddling pool) which kept the children amused for hours - literally! But the hidden genius of Kestrel Cottage for us was the play barn - adjacent to the cottage, this was a lifesaver on the one rainy day we had. Kiddie-coaster, play kitchen, blackboard, dressing up, ball pit... the list goes on. There are loads of things nearby to do, so you won't be bored - unless you simply want to sit in the garden soaking up the sun of course. We had looked all over for a place that would keep our girls entertained and would mean we wouldn't need to fill our car with kiddy stuff for the trip but that wouldn't cost the earth. Kestrel Cottage will give you the same sort of things you'd find on BabyFriendlyBoltholes.com but at a fraction of the cost. Great value for money, friendly owners and one of the most fun AND relaxing holidays I've had in ages. Can't recommend Kestrel Cottage enough.

un grand we en or!

Great, relaxing stay
Another wonderful stay at la Hamel Roger. It is our second year because the location, friendliness of owners and relaxed feel make it a home from home. The cottage itself is extremely accommodating to our growing configuration requirements as our groups families expand with Ange taking advise on the day of where cots, toddler beds and single beds needed to go to ensure the best night sleep for all. An abundance of toys and space for both indoor and outdoor play provided entertainment whatever the weather, we stayed house base for over half our stay. It offers great value for money for a relaxed low key getaway.

home from home!
We stayed for 2 weeks at kestrel cottage with a 15 month old and a dog- Angie and Danny and family were extremely welcoming and after showing us around despite being just next door we were left to our privacy with them on hand just in case we needed anything. The house was well stocked for cooking and ideal for those with young children with stairgates and toys. The huge bonus was the playbarn and outdoor toys and our little boy barely played with his own toys as there was so much to entertain him/ wear him out! It was also warm enough for a dip in the outdoor pool on one day! Having stayed in a few rustic barns in Normandy this was a welcome change as it was light and warm and lovely and clean. We are regular visitors to this part of Normandy and the location was perfect- close to the lovely village and park of beny bocage but an easy drive to vire or Villiers bocage for larger shops and less than an hour to beaches. Definitely would recommend it particularly families with under fives and we'll be back!

Perfect Family Holiday
We arrived on Saturday lunch time, and immediately felt relaxed. This was our 2nd time of staying at Le Hamel Roger and by the evening we were already talking about booking our 3rd visit. (Which we now have :) ). Danny, Angie & their family are the perfect hosts, very friendly, helpful, more than happy to share their knowledge and advice for local attractions (and tips for those on a budget). The house is in a great location, nice and rural for those that like the peace and quiet or tranquil local walks, but also close enough to get to the local shops and markets via a short drive. Also perfect if you want to travel to the tourist attractions such as the beaches etc. The house is very child friendly and well equipped, everything you need for your break is here, evenings spent playing board games as a family (whilst mum and dad enjoyed a glass of wine) really help to get the family to enjoy proper quality time together away from the day to day toil of normal working life. We came away from here again feeling completely relaxed. We would recommend this place for families of all sizes as there is something to do for all. The play barn can be a great way to keep younger children entertained too. Little tips we have learnt, travel from the UK to Caen as then you only have a 45 min drive to the house (plus you save on the tolls). If arriving late on a Saturday, bring some food basics to get through Sunday as shops do not open on Sundays. Drink the wine from the local supermarket (watch what the locals buy - its always a good choice). Speak to Angie about local attractions, she can give a good run down on them all, advising best days to visit etc. Highly recommend this place for a great relaxing holiday, book now as you will not be disappointed.

Kestrel Cottage
We have just returned from the most tranquil and wonderful family holiday. Kestrel cottage, is fantastic as are the family that own it and live next door. The cottage has everything you could possibly need and so much more. Books, DVDs, games, a playroom for the children, baby cot / highchair / toys / changing mat...even the use of an off road buggy. It has a super garden and a swimming pool (too cold for us to use!). There are lots of interesting things to do locally and Angie is always on hand to help and offer advice and tips...which was just brilliant. It is very rural and the surroundings are beautiful. There are so few cars and lots of wonderful walks nearby. It is also close to some amazing sites of world historical interest - Le Mont St Michel and Bayeux. Highly recommended for a quiet and relaxing holiday for a couple or a family. Angie, Dan and all the kids are extremely welcoming and friendly - nothing was too much trouble...they were so lovely to our exuberant six month old puppy! And as for the Calvados...!!!

Nice family house ,Lovely peaceful place where on a clear night the milky way is visible! ,very amiable hosts next door who are very family orientated and will help and give advice if wanted. You must travel to find the restaurants but a small price to pay for the genuine peace and quite.

We are a family of Mum, Dad, children (aged 20 - 9), one dog, three cats, ten chickens, two Ducks, one goat and one pig. Our dog is called Dobby, he's a lab crossed with something, he has a lovely temperament. He's great with children, new people & other dogs, also great with rabbits and lambs, cats by arrangement!

Why they chose this property

We moved here from London in 2007. We decided it was time for a slower pace of life. The truth is we are busier than ever! We really enjoy running the gite and meeting all the different people. Danny has turned a hobby into a business and runs his gardening company, I teach 'Discovering English' sessions in local infant and primary schools, we also welcome language students.
The country side is so beautiful and you really see the changing seasons. It's a wonderful place for children and they have so much space to play. We are easily accessible from the Uk so we still get plenty of time with family and old friends. Everyday is an adventure with something new to do, lots of challenges and it's not always easy, but one look around and it's certainly worth it!

What makes this property unique

We fell in love with the space here. We were very happy with our life in London with so much happening but we love it here with open countryside all around, village life, space to play and relax. It's simple and it's wonderful!
