About this property

Charming CasparCottage Walk to the Waterfall in Russian Gulch State Park

CasparCottage is a charming, quiet, nicely and newly furnished cottage that we built on our five private acres, with a walk through a redwood forest to the WATERFALL in Russian Gulch State Park. We are located just 3 miles up the ridge from the ocean and 10 minutes from Mendocino or Fort Bragg. It's a perfect place for a honeymoon, anniversary, special occasion or quiet retreat. It has a comfortable queen bed with down comforter and nice linens, new sleeper sofa with a memory foam mattress, fully equipped custom kitchen, gas BBQ and picnic table with string lights above for enjoying the outdoors in the evenings, lovely custom cabinetry and a beautiful marble tiled bathroom with a jetted tub and large shower.

The cottage is private, spotless, very comfortable and nicely appointed. Flames from an enameled European propane stove bring the warmth and coziness of a fire with the convenience of a thermostat. There is a CD player, DIRECTV w/ HBO, DVD/VCR with small library of films, Satellite INTERNET connection, iron and hairdryer. We provide coffee and tea, toast and jam and fresh fruit and flowers. From the cottage you can walk through the Redwoods to a beautiful WATERFALL, as we are near the Russian Gulch State Park Waterfall Trail and bicycle trails in Jackson State Forest.

We will gladly direct you to great restaurants, nice beaches, beautiful hikes and activities on the coast. PRICES INCLUDE CLEANING AND BREAKFAST GOODIES!

Sweet and Restorative Forest Stay
We were so happy to have two nights at Diane's beautiful cottage in the pygmy forest. It was impeccably clean, warm and welcoming. The cabin is infused with green and light and color from the world outside. We loved sitting in the Adirondack chairs with out coffee among the flowers, the art, the abalone shells and visiting hummingbirds. We so appreciated the coffee, bread, butter and jam, and enjoyed being able to cook several meals for ourselves. Also loved the jacuzzi tub for a rare (for us) soak. We are already recommending the Cottage to friends and would love to come again.

Caspar Cottage
Incredibly beautiful property with welcoming hosts. The nature setting was just what we needed. Kitchen is well-equipped, jacuzzi tub is gorgeous and surrounded by windows, and the large windows made us feel like we were outside in the lovely garden even while lounging inside on the couch. We used the grill every night and walked to/from the waterfall a few times. Simply gorgeous!

Ultra clean and very well equipped. This place is one of the best we have ever stayed in. The plants around the property are like a botanical garden, extreme care is put into this cottage ad the foliage around it. We recommend Caspar Cottage 5 Stars with special commendation.

Magical!
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Caspar Cottage. It was a very relaxing stay. The ammenities were thoughtful and hospitable. The location of Caspar Cottage is secluded, quiet and peaceful yet a short drive to the Mendocino Village. We especially enjoyed the artistic touches of the cottage. A very lovely place and we will be back. Thank you Diane and Bob for sharing your magical place.

Great little place near Mendocino
This is a very nice place with very nice hosts. Very comfortable, modern appliances, lights, etc, yet a lot of old time charm. It is a bit up the hill from the ocean, which probably means that there is a good chance you will be more out of the fog. We had 4 beautiful sunny days which included an excellent road bike ride and 2 fantastic kayak paddles. The hosts provided bread and homemade jam (which was excellent), coffee, fresh flowers, etc. Very nice hosts - try this place out. I think you will like it!

Fabulous!
What a terrific cottage and what perfect hosts! Caspar Cottage is charming, cozy, well stocked for cooking (or not!), impeccably clean, and immensely comfortable. We were met with lights and heat on for our late chilly afternoon arrival--along with fresh bread, butter and jam, local Thanksgiving coffee, fresh seasonal fruit, and a delightful ambiance. The sense of privacy and peace was glorious. Diane and Bob not only offer a perfect get-away, but tons of ideas and pointers for enjoying the area. Can't wait to return!

Look forward to returning!
I was in the area for my son's wedding which was nearby at Jug Handle Creek Nature Center. Caspar Cottage was the perfect location for a perfect event. The surroundings are beautiful, lush with flowers and many inviting places to sit outside. The inside was attractive and super comfortable, lit with large picture windows that brought the garden inside! Best of all the hosts, Diane and Bob, were a delight. I feel I have special new friends. Hope it won't be too long before I return.

Awesome Get Away
This little cabin is charming and secluded. This was an anniversary celebration for us. It is close to Ft. Bragg and Downtown Mendocino. The scenery and location are perfect for trips to explore the beaches and forest nearby. We were able to hike daily. The owners are on site and are so great at accommodating whatever it is you need. They left breakfast for us and really tailored it to us. We have allergies and there are so many foods that can't be eaten. If I could offer a suggestion that would make it even better, is a different mattress. Thank you for such a great time!

Excellent details and aestheticism.
Caspar Cottage was my favorite vacation rental throughout our three week trip in Northwest California and Utah. The craftsmanship, features of the home, attention to details, natural light and huge bathroom tub were incredible. We also loved the succulents in pots that Diane has created with her own hands. The gardens were in full bloom and added rich color. There is a wonderful hike just down the road from their property. Mendocino is only a few miles and has a great vibe. Diane and Bob are a huge help and support. I will never forget my time at Caspar Cottage and would like to return one day.

A second home
This is our home of choice when we visit Mendocino, especially for longer stays where a full kitchen is a must. Bob & Diane are warm hosts who built everything on the property themselves, so it's lovely to appreciate all the care that went in to this guest cottage. It is artistic yet minimalist, and just the aesthetic we are looking for when we want rest among the redwoods and the waves. My husband and I usually bring our young son, who camps out on the sofa bed, while we enjoy the comfy foam mattress on the bed around the corner. We all love the soaking tub, the propane fireplace, and the beautiful light streaming in the giant sitting room window. The surrounding gardens on the property are also gorgeous. This is a spot that feels like home.

We LOVE Caspar Cottage!
I hardly know where to begin! Your kind hospitality began as we reserved your cottage. We felt so welcome from the get-go. And then to arrive and find an idyllic, private cottage in a pristine setting…heavenly! Your cottage is comfortable, immaculate and so tastefully decorated. The woodworking is gorgeous, the photography inspiring, and your plants and flowers warm, soothing and enviable. Your extra special touches were so very thoughtful - the divine bread (with butter no less!) delicious coffee (with milk no less!) and fruit galore. You thought of every amenity, even robes for the bath and special lights outside to make the evenings more magical. You are clearly kind, warm, generous folks who love to make even strangers very happy. Thank you from the bottoms of our hearts. We'll be back!

Perfect Place
We rented Caspar Cottage for 5 nights to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary. The cottage was even more charming than the pictures, if that's possible! Beautiful, peaceful setting, very well constructed, high quality, an abundance of amenities. The attention to detail was everywhere. The bed was extremely comfortable, everything was spotless. We could not have picked a better place! And the price-I feel like we stole the place! Nowhere else would you find such a unique and special getaway like this for the money. Very conveniently located to a plethora of activities and scenic wonders. Simply drive 3 miles on 409 rd, then either turn right or left onto HWY 1-within minutes there are endless beaches and bluffs, restaurants, shops, adventures, etc. On our way into Mendocino that first day, we stopped at several great wineries on our very scenic route through the Anderson Valley. During our stay we very much enjoyed :hiking from the cottage to the beautiful waterfall in the redwoods, having picnics on Pine Beach and Jughandle Beach, eating lunch and shopping at Noyo Harbor, experiencing seal watching at MacKerricher Park, hiking to the light house, 'beach hopping' along HWY 1, exquisite dining at Ledford House which included seeing grey whales spouting in the ocean! Overall, the area was so serene and quiet. Endless beauty. Not to mention the short drive to the redwoods in Montgomery Forest.Everyone should be able to experience the majestic redwoods in their lifetime. Indescribable. We will never forget this trip to Mendocino, the fabulous time we had, nor the place where we stayed- Caspar Cottage. Bob and Diane are such genuine and friendly people-very helpful and kind hosts. We already have friends who are wanting to look into staying at Caspar Cottage, and we would love to return again .If you're looking to rekindle your spirit, this is the place!

Private and Pristine
This charming, immaculate cottage, spoiled us for any other places! We had to stay in a different cabin, owned by different people near the Russian River and we were completely disillusioned by that experience. Mostly, because THIS, Caspar Cottage, was amazing and perfect in every way. When we arrived we were greeted with fresh fruit, flowers, bread, and really good coffee. There were even freshly picked strawberries from the owner's garden, which were delicious! We drove a rental car up from San Francisco and as we got closer to Mendocino, the drive became captivating, through the redwoods. Roll down your windows and smell the fresh earthiness of the air, it is revitalizing. The waterfall trail that is within walking distance of the cottage is absolutely enchanting. The first time we hiked it, we met no one on the trail, and the breeze had blown wild, pink, Rhododendron blossoms onto our walking path. I felt like we were inside a greeting card or travel magazine. We loved the fanciful, little town of Mendocino. Simply walking from the town to the seashore there was a mystical experience for us. Clear views of the beautiful seaside, and rarely meeting another soul made our vacation spiritual and magical. Caspar cottage itself, lent a helping hand. It is extremely clean and seems new. I found everything I needed to cook and grill. There is a lovely little picnic area in the manicured side yard. The landscaping is beautiful and meticulous, the little artistic touches everywhere are splendid. Everywhere I looked inside and outside of the cottage, I was met with little surprises, from Orchids growing in the bathroom, to hand made ceramic hearts in an artful display amongst the plants on the front porch. The cottage is expertly decorated, from the pictures to the quilts and pillows. The bed linens are so clean that I felt like they were brand new, they were super soft and heavenly. The bathroom has a full, jetted tub and a shower, and is all new and clean, a spa experience can be had in there, if you find the time. We were fortunate to have Jughandle beach and walking trails completely to ourselves, it felt like our own private getaway! Exploring the Krummholz along the ecological stair case walk, made our 6 year old son feel like he was in a fairytale. He also took photos of the gardens in the Owner's yard next door, he loved this place. The sea glass beach is not far away and was fun. True peace and relaxation can be had here.

Sweet Cottage in the Forest!
What can I say but WOW! This was our first attempt with VRBO and we are so happy we chose this one. Everything was great from the fabulous bread and jam to the cleanliness, to the surroundings. We needed to decompress and this was the place. The ease and comfort and ability to cook our own meals is a bonus as well. Diane was so helpful with any directions and knowledge about the area. Beautiful forest getaway!
I had a very relaxing and lovely stay at Caspar Cottage! I appreciate all the effort that Dianne went through to make sure it was as safe and clean as possible in these Covid times. Make sure to leave the porch light on for yourself since only one of the solar path lights is working, but this is a very minor detail. The cottage has everything you need really, and is very comfortable, warm and inviting! If you plan to cook a lot, the kitchen counter is extremely small and the refrigerator is fairly small as well--not a big deal if you're eating out, doing takeout, or have brought a larger ice chest with you. It was wonderful being able to hear the rain on the roof, the frogs calling at night and the birds in the morning! While nestled in the forest, you are a very short drive to Fort Bragg with all its amenities, and of course the gorgeous Mendocino coast! This is a wonderful mountain retreat and I hope to come back soon!

Short Honeymoon getaway
I rented this property at the request of my newly married daughter and her husband. They were hoping for a nice, quiet getaway to celebrate their new life together and that is exactly what they got. A charming, quaint cabin secluded in the woods hosted by a very lovely couple was the report I received. Situated just far enough from town to make it convenient yet quiet. The breads and jams found at arrival were a nice surprise. Thank you for the wonderful memory.

We built this sweet cottage on our five private acres near the end of the road at the eastern end of the Russian Gulch State Park. We also built our home and a small woodworking shop, and raised our children here. We have lived on the Mendocino coast for 35 years and love the Mendocino community.

Why they chose this property

Mendocino is a beautiful coastal village perched on a headlands overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It has a very active artists' community with many art galleries as well as fine restaurants and shops. There are five State Parks along our coast, perfect for hiking and biking and kayaking and birdwatching and beach combing. There are many activities and festivals throughout the year. Whale watching weekends in March, a Film Festival in early June, the Mendocino Music Festival in July, Mendocino Art Center Fairs in July and November, Winesong! in September and Wine and Mushrooms and Crab Festivals in November and January.

What makes this property unique

We enjoy sharing our little oasis with guests who appreciate nature, peace and quiet and a comfortable, nicely appointed cottage to relax in and enjoy beautiful Mendocino coast. It's all about hospitality! Please visit our CasparCottage website and the Guests' Comments page.
