About this property

Village Cottage with an Amazing Water View

Located in Historic Castine Village with spectacular views across the harbor to Cape Rosier and of the grand schooners coming in under full sail.

This charming, fully equipped cottage is just sixty feet from the waters edge and has easy steps leading down to the beach.

A unique blend of a small New England town with a common and seafaring village, Castine is exceptionally picturesque. Many of its homes date back to the American Revolution and the streets remain lined with majestic, hundred year old Elm trees.

Not many towns can boast more in the way of recreation, cultural activities and community services, yet remain so unspoiled by commercial tourism. There are no traffic lights and no fast food chains but amenities include sailing, kayaking, golf, tennis, the Maine Maritime Academy pool and fitness facilities, churches, a library, restaurants, museums, a small grocery store, a doctors office and musical concert on the this just a short stroll from Moonrise Anchorage.

Top level has a queen sized bed, and 2 single beds. There is a second small bedroom with a pop-up trundle, that can be a configured as a single bed, or 2 singles, or put together as a king-sized bed. The living-dining area has large sliding doors facing the water, which lead out to a large deck that has a a panoramic view the harbor with a charcoal grill, plenty of outdoor seating and an umbrella to provide shade. Private beach just steps from the front door.

Everything one could need for a spectacular vacation!

Delightful cottage with a view of Union River Bay
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Gray Cottage. The cottage itself is well furnished, clean and comfortable. It has a wonderful view of Union River Bay. When we stayed in and took a day off from exploring the surrounding area, we simply relaxed and delighted in the view. Dee, the property manager, is easy to work with and made sure we were satisfied with the accommodations.

A wonderful week in Vacationland
This was our second stay at Janet’s property as well as our second stay in Castine. The home is clean, welcoming, and the perfect location to soak in the beauty of the surrounding area. The views off the deck are stunning, it’s within walking distance to downtown Castine and other points of interest in the area, and is helpfully situated for a quick drive out of town to explore Downeast Maine. We hope to return again and again!

Great Location and View
Great location and top notch communication with the manager. The couch and dining table need to be replaced. Kitchen was not as well equipped as I would prefer. I would stay there again as the location and view out weigh these short comings.

Good location, convenient to Castine center
This is our 4th time staying at this cottage. I am a kayaker so I like the convenience of having a beach across the street to store my kayak and the location close to Castine harbor. The view from the cottage is amazing. Negatives would be access to the cottage is via steep stairs accessed from a damp basement.

Charming cottage next to the water
My family enjoyed our stay here. The balcony was quite lovely overlooking the water. There are stairs across the street down to the water. It is an easy five minute walk to Main Street in Castine.

Perfect Maine stay
We had a seamless experience with Janet and the cottage. It’s a perfect size for a small family, made all the better that we could bring our four-legged member as well. The location is within walking distance to the small center of Castine, and quick drive to the highlights of the surrounding area. We look forward to a return visit in years to come!

My favorite place
We love to come back every year. Two times for us this year! I'll never get tired of the view from this cottage. Coffee and reading on the deck, windows open for the breeze and beautiful scenery whether is foggy, rainy or a perfectly beautiful sunshiny day. The cottage is always spotless and perfect for a couple or small family. The town of Castine is beautiful and serene. I took three walks a day and will never ever get tired of the views.Plenty of history in this town to keep you occupied. Janet is very responsive and a gracious host. You will not be disappointed!

Castine Cottage
Overall very good stay. You just can’t beat the view and the access to the water right out the front door. Everything was very clean and organized. The front deck was great to use at night and during the day. My only critique would be that the bed could be a bit more comfortable but overall everything was as expected for a cottage on the shore. My family and I had a great time.

Peaceful Oasis
We've stayed here several times and will come back for as many years as it's available. It's our favorite spot in Maine. The house is very clean and has everything you need. Janet is very easy to communicate with. The view of the bay is unbeatable. The town of Castine is the most lovely on the coast and the residents will treat you like a neighbor. I'm always sad to leave this place.

Great stay in a lovely cottage!
My husband and two teenage daughters had a wonderful stay in this beautiful cottage in beautiful Castine! Janet was a thoughtful and very responsive host, and her house was absolutely perfect for us. It was very clean, airy feeling, easy to keep clean, and the view was beautiful:) It rained for the 6 days we were there (obviously, no fault of the host), and we STILL had a wonderful time in the cottage, taking walks around Castine, reading the history, and then playing games while looking at the view from the table. Acadia was short enough ride that we could go for the day and do a few misty hikes: ) Great stay-thanks so much, Janet!

Castine stay
I am a kayaker so the best feature of this house is access to the beach which is across the street from the house and down a set of stairs. i leave my kayak on the beach and have access to it whenever i want. The other great feature is walkability to Castine harbor and its center. Negative feature is access to the house through the basement which smells quite musty.

Castine water views are the best part
We loved the charming, historic town of Castine, its friendly residents, and scenic drive through the Blue HIll Peninsula and Acadia National Park. The cottage's waterfront location can't be beat, and we enjoyed an easy walk to town and all it had to offer. While the cottage's simple accommodations did have all the amenities listed, like soaps, towels, dishes and such, some of the living room furnishings could use a refresh, particularly the fold-out foam sleeper sofa, which was very uncomfortable to sit on. The second floor loft bedroom is very peaceful, and nicely furnished with colorful quilts.

Great location
My husband and I and our adult daughter spent a week here. We absolutely loved Castine. Beautiful town with amazing history. Great walking, good restaurants, hidden gem of a museum (Wilson Museum), and close to other lovely areas on the peninsula. The house was well-equipped and conveniently located very close to town. Beds were not comfortable for us. It was very humid while we were visiting, and the basement and the bathroom were pretty musty smelling (no fault of the owner). We spent lots of time on the deck enjoying the gorgeous view; we found the hard plastic chairs uncomfortable for extended sitting. It was a good home base for us, but we felt the house would benefit from a bit of TLC.

Castine cabon
The location and views were wonderful. Unfortunately the basement had a terrible smell of mold. This is where the washer is located. The one toilet was barely functioning. It needs replacement badly. The yard is terribly overgrown. I stayed 2 weeks and no one came to take the trash. The trash bin smelled very bad too. So, while we loved the location and the view, the rest of the experience was pretty primitive.

Disappointed
We booked two weeks. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a weed patch at the entryway and parking area with invasive vines engulfing the evergreens on either side and onto the deck. The general dirt on the entry way door and mat indicated a place not well cared for. The photos are accurate and overall, the place was superficially clean. We were disappointed by the stains on some of the floor mats, curtains (mismatched!) and towels. But our biggest shock was when we washed the queen bed sheets after the first week. The bed pad was badly stained and shredded on the under side. Even worse, the mattress was turned upside down under a topper in an attempt to conceal the large stain and torn fabric on the proper sleep side. The arrangement explained why the bed was so wobbly and uncomfortable. Other deficiencies: Missing kitchen sink faucet aerator (we replaced); inoperative outlet in the downstairs bedroom; broken casement window crank; loose screws on a number of the other window cranks (tightened); woefully insufficient single swing-arm light provided for the entire kitchen area, plus no stove-oven exhaust vent. In addition, several corroded light sockets caused intermittent illumination failure (repaired). There was also heavy dust on some window screens restricting air flow. The appliances included an antiquated fridge with missing door shelf retaining bar. No trash pickup at the end of the first week as promised. Also, out-of-date information posted on the refrigerator door. On the positive side, the mostly unobstructed view of the harbor was enjoyable; walk-to-town convenience; Roku TV service & internet were just fine. Overall, this cottage suffers from neglect and indifference.
