About this property

Characterful Farmhouse With Large Pool Set Amidst Sunflowers And Vineyards

Le Rusthe is blessed with rustic charm and character but with the holiday comforts that make a house a home. Literally, set amidst vineyards and sunflower fields, with views that stretch for miles, privacy and peace will only be interrupted by the sounds coming from the 12 x 6m pool !

A great success since 2015 has been the addition of table football, a dart board, a 50" TV screen (just for games/DVDs ... not TV broadcasts), and the biggest leather sofa you have ever seen - all upstairs in the 'grenier' - a great haven for teenagers !

There are lots of walks that can be undertaken from Le Rusthe. Especially recommended is the gentle climb up to Soumensac on Sunday lunchtimes during July and August when food and wine is served 'al fresco' by local traders. Get there early for a bench seat in the shade of the tress with fabulous views by over Le Rusthe and way beyond !

Or, you could try hiring an electric bike from 'Good Turn' Cycles in Eymet - mention Le Rusthe for a discount ! Regular road cycling or off-road 'VTT' is great fun for keen cyclists (it is hilly around Le Rusthe !), but electric bikes do make an amazing difference so that hills can be enjoyed rather than feared, bringing 2-wheeled trips to Eymet and Duras, or a whizz around the nearby Lac de L'Escourou within the range of the less fit.

Eymet is fast becoming an attractive location for eating and drinking. New restaurants and bars have opened in 2019/2020, including the hugely successful Peruvian specialist, 'Andine', competing with the ever popular 'Restaurant Italian des Arcades'.

A superb retreat

le Rusthe is a great escape from many of the intrusions from modern life with ample space to relax and unwind. We particularly enjoyed the large pool, eating on the terrace and the abundant nature plus easy access to the attractive towns of Bergerac and Duras. Ideal for two or three families to share.

Rustic farmhouse, lovely area but overpriced.

The house is in a lovely part of the world, surrounded by sunflower fields and easy access to small towns such as St Emilion and Bergerac which are definitely worth a day trip to explore. The pool is a really good size for kids to play whilst the sun shines and there’s also a really handy games room at the top of the property which is great entertainment if the weather isn’t on your side. However, we think the property is overpriced compared to others we have stayed in. The decking around the pool is unsafe for children as it’s unstable with loose rotten panels and rusty nails pretending through, there was no WiFi, the kitchen is dark and needs updating, there was a hornets nest causing havoc to the outside area and neighbours (who complained about it whilst we were there), there is damp throughout the house including next to the beds which gave a musty smell and the bbq was dirty. It would have been ok if we’d paid £1700/1800 for the week but not for over £2.5k.

Peaceful France

We spent an enjoyable week in this spacious farmhouse. We were a party of 7 adults and two children aged 1 and 4 years. The house is in a nice elevated position with rural views including vineyards. The bedrooms are light, attractive and roomy. All the accommodation is on one level which is good when there are young children. The kitchen/dining and living area is all one room. There was space for everyone to eat although the room was rather dark and there are no sofas. As we had fine weather we ate outside so this was not a big issue. The pool is a good size and is protected by a gate. Our little ones did soon work out how to open it though, so we had to be vigilant. There are some loungers and a table and chairs which was nice place for aperitifs. There is no shade or parasols near the pool. The two shower rooms are very new and efficient. Possible downsides. There is no wifi (which could be an advantage) and no landline. The furniture and fixtures are quite old which made us rather nervous about getting our deposit back. However we only had a couple of minor breakages so no problem in getting a swift return of the £300. There is no Boulangerie in Soumensacc and the one in St Jean de duras has very limited opening hours and only sell bread. The Soumensac Sunday lunch was good and usefully timed for the day after arrival. If you want a table get there early. The walk from the house is lovely. We also enjoyed the gourmand evening held on Fridays during August in nearby La Sauvetat-du-dropt. This saved cooking on our last evening.

Rustic Heaven

First time returning to this area of France for 6 years, following the loss of a loved one, so an emotional trip for us. We couldn't have picked a better place to stay for our family. For adults and children alike, this rustic farmhouse property is wonderful. We didn't have teenagers but the adults enjoyed a few games in the upstairs games room. The little ones (mostly boys) spent most of their time finding insects, playing football or in the pool. We had scorching weather so the pool was a complete necessity and very well used. So beautiful to float/swim around with the wonderful view. The bedrooms are very spacious and had everything you needed and all with their own theme. The evenings were mostly spent dining under the apple tree trying to catch whatever little breeze we could, such a spectacular place to sit, overlooking the vines. Sadly we were too late for the sunflowers, which must have looked stunning. Exceptional heat has brought them on early this year we imagine. Overall, loved it!!

A lovely old building in a beautiful setting with many very attractive rural features. The fruit trees, views over the vineyard, the smell of ripe figs, all very atmospheric. Sitting and eating outside was a delight. The swimmers amongst us found the pool a bit cold. The cyclists amongst us found hiring the electric bikes from Eymet a great way to learn about the area and do some wine tasting. A lovely holiday, thank you.

Une ancienne maison de campagne au milieu de vignes / An old charming country house in the vineyards

A wonderful huge rustic house in a rural vine area with several nice villages nearby or not too far by car. We were three generations spending two weeks au Rusthe, and there was enough room for kids to play and to swim in the pool, as well as for grandparents to have their corner for resting and reading calmly. As we were there during a 'canicule', a heatwave, the pool was our salvation :) and we appreciated the coolness inside the house. The only disadvantage I can figure out is that you really cannot go anywhere without a car, not even to buy a bread in the morning. At least in the heatness it would have been too long a morning walk, 4 km uphill and downhill - and the same 4 km back! We found the house well equipped and were able to cook meals for our crowd of 12 people. Yes, the dishwasher was a blessing :) We also quite liked the rustic style of the house, with many ancient objects and robust furniture. One of the bedrooms was a Van Gogh room, and another a Picasso room, I guess. The so called game room upstairs is huge. There is a big screen but no tv which we didn't really miss. It's only for watching films on dvd - there is a good selection of them - or for PlayStation. Around the area, there were several 'fêtes de village' and 'soirée / marchés gourmands' that we sincerely recommend. Do talk to people in boulangeries and wineyards, they will tell you what's up. We also dropped by several small wine producers, there are so many all around. Many thanks to Nick for good advice we got and for being available to answer our questions patiently.

Gorgeous property in a great location, can't recommend highly enough

We really loved this property - which in my view is even more beautiful than in the pictures. It is beautifully furnished, a real quintessential French farmhouse, but also contains so many useful additions to ensure you've everything you need for a great holiday (really well stocked kitchen, loads of games and books and things to do, etc). We stayed as a couple of families with kids and the set-up was really great for them, with the pool and the games room keeping the kids very happy and occupied! The surrounding area is very pretty and there's lots of things to do nearby (or else you can just stay at home and relax and enjoy the property). The hosts were extremely helpful, always very prompt in responding to questions and providing lots of useful tips on things to do once you're there.

A fabulous holiday

We have just returned from a week at Le Rusthe. We were a party of 6 adults and 4 children. We have had the most fabulous time. The house was equipped with everything that we could possibly need. The rooms, full of character , have been lovingly decorated and furnished. It is difficult to describe adequately the complete tranquility of sitting on the terrace with early morning coffee to hand, fields of vines and sunflowers stretching towards the woods across the valley and feeling restored and relaxed. The pool and garden were adored by all and the games room was a huge hit with the teenagers. We loved exploring the local area and returned home with many bottles from La Brossiere thanks to an impromptu degustation hosted by the very kind owner. The pizzeria in Eymet was a highlight; fantastic food, location and amazing service. We canoed at Allemans as it was too hot to drive to the popular spots along the Dordogne and visited the Thursday market in Monpazier which filled the square and surrounding streets. A day trip to St Emilion and an exploration of the surrounding vineyards was well worth the drive . We found the Hyper market on the outskirts of St Foy really useful for stocking up and the boulangerie in Sauvetat convenient for bread ; the pain au chocolate and croissants were the biggest that we had ever seen but you need to get there early ! We really enjoyed the Sunday lunch at Soumensac , sat under the lime trees.... We even persuaded some of the children to try snails. Some of our party flew in and out from Bergerac which was a very straightforward 30 minute drive, whilst others had taken the train from Paris , also a straightforward pick up. Thank you for enabling us to have a holiday that surpassed our expectations in every respect.

Idyllic French Farmhouse

We have just returned from a glorious week’s holiday at Le Rusthe. What a magical place! Surrounded by sunflowers and vines, the view stretches over woods and fields, with spectacular sunsets reflected in the large swimming pool. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated, and have blissfully comfortable beds. The ancient stone walls and painted wooden shutters keep the house cool even on the hottest days, and the hilltop location means there is always a gentle breeze – better than any air-conditioning! The kitchen, with original beams and fireplace (complete with rocking chairs!) is huge and fully-equipped, and we ate outside every day on the veranda, where there is a second large table. The 2 new bathrooms are huge and have great showers, and it is useful having a 3rd bathroom not far from the pool. There is so much to see and do, we feel we have only just started to explore the area and will certainly be coming back again – from the delicious Sunday lunch at Soumensac, just a walk away through the vines, to the lovely market and castle in Duras, or the epic Pizzeria in Eymet… not to mention the amazing white wine from Domaine D’Eybro – head from Soumensac towards Eymet, and turn right when you get to the lake. The children loved the pool, and the games room upstairs was ideal, with hilarious games of table tennis and table football, as well as the vast sofa which seats an entire family – the massive screen was very popular for playing racing games on the PS3! We would strongly recommend Le Rusthe for family holidays, as there is something for everyone – we will be back!

Thoroughly recommended

We had a wonderful family holiday here and wouldn't hesitate to return. Le Rusthe offers the perfect balance of rustic charm with home comforts whilst providing a wonderful space and a vista that is second to none. The farmhouse feels extremely homely, beautifully decorated and contains all you need for large scale catering. The pool is an excellent size, well equipped for children whilst surrounded by comfortable loungers and the best views you could hope for. The area is strewn with all that is typically wonderful of rural South West France; markets offering local produce, festivals and chateaux. We have no regrets about staying here again with more family and friends.
