Excellent accommodation with great pool, views and hosts
We had a wonderful time at Casa Brown. Caroline and Stephen are great and accommodating hosts with the best tips for the surroundings. The flat is very clean and well equipped with everything you need. One of the best things is, of course, the pool!! We can highly recommend staying here and we hope to visit again.

Fantastisch!!

Simply amazing
Amazing location and views, very nice apartment and pool – and excellent hosts. With all 5-star ratings already at the website, it still exceeded our expectations. To start with the latter, we had received very detailed driving instructions only to be noticed shortly before arrival that the nearest road was closed due to construction works. Stephen was therefore receiving us at the crossroads leading us an alternative and hard-to-find route to the house. Arriving late afternoon we found the kitchen and fridge stocked with basic supplies allowing us a good breakfast next day without having to think about shopping the first day. What a reception of guests (but very descriptive of Stephen and Caroline as hosts)! Throughout our stay Stephen and Caroline demonstrated the exact right balance of giving us privacy and quietness and on the other hand being available and hospitable providing lots of useful information, advice and even having us in for drinks one evening. The apartment and facilities turned out to be just as promised. Three nice bedrooms, 2 bathroom (1 en-suite) and big living room / kitchen provided ample space for 6 guests (we were 5). Also all appliances and kitchenware was excellent (even several sharp knives which we find rare in rentals). The pool area was very nice as well with sunchairs and also possibilities to sit in the shade of the parasol. And the views…. The pictures in the website does not serve it justice – they are amazing. No wonder why Stephen and Caroline chose to live here! We have stayed in many rental homes around Europe, but this apartment is definitely the best equipped, biggest and with the best sense of details. We would be delighted to come back some day.

Superb, well presented property, idyllic setting
The property is well presented and well equipped. The owners are very welcoming and offer great advice about the local area. We used the property as a base for day trips to Milan, Lake Garda and more locally to Modena to the Ferrari and Panini museums. A trip to the local Parmesan factory in Monchio with Stephen is well worth a visit too. A week wasn't long enough for us to explore the area so we will be going back. The views from the property are sensational too !

An incredible location, villa and host!
Our stay at Casa Brown was an amazing experience and we would highly recommend! We stayed at the villa following a weeks travelling in Italy and it was the perfect place to relax and unwind. The apartment was well furnished with all the facilities you need and three large bedrooms (one with ensuite). The location of the villa is ideally located centrally in Italy to allow you to explore the surrounding area and Stephen and Caroline were eager to share their own recommendations and ideas of places to see. The view from the pool (and all around the villa) is incredible with the photos not doing this justice! The villa is located in the mountains south of Modena and there is no noise pollution allowing for total isolation and relaxation. Stephen and Caroline make excellent hosts, helping us find the local supermarket, giving us all the information on the local area, including a suggestion to walk to the top of the mountain and see the Milky Way (highly recommended), and even going so far as to giving us a lift to a local restaurant to allow the designated driver an evening off! Our group consisted of four 24 year olds and I would highly recommend this villa to anyone looking to enjoy Central Italy! Amazing Holiday and thanks again to Caroline and Stephen!

A wonderful and peaceful week at Casa Brown
My wife, adult son and I just returned home after spending an incredible week at Casa Brown and surroundings, located up in the hills between Polinago and Monchio in the Emilia Romagna region of Northern Italy. Caroline and Stephen ensured that our stay in their beautiful home was perfect, right from the beginning. Before arriving at their home they quickly responded to our questions about the home and the area via email. Several days before leaving for their home they sent a very detailed set of driving instructions, including where to get some groceries and supplies. Upon our arrival we were warmly greeted by Caroline and Stephen and shown to the spacious, comfortable and very clean apartment on the upper floor of their newly renovated farm house. We were very thankful to find a fridge stocked with some basics to get us started, including eggs, milk, a bottle of the local rose frizzante, a cold beer, and some delicious homemade cherry jam, chutney, and limoncello. This was such a wonderful surprise after a long day of flying and driving! During our stay we explored the nearby bigger towns of Modena, Verona, and Bologna, as well as some smaller gems, such as Brandola. While the area is steeped in history it is also a food lovers paradise and Caroline and Stephen had plenty of advice for some local trattorias and pizzerias! We were never disappointed! They have organized several binders for their guests which help with everything you might want to know about their home, where to eat, and what to see. Of course, they are also very accommodating and were more than happy to share their time and their love and knowledge of the area. We spent a fun morning with them both on a tour of the local parmigiano-reggiano factory! We also enjoyed spending some time relaxing by the pool and looking out over the valley from our perch on high. It being the end of July, the valley bottom got very warm, but up at Casa Brown there were always cool breezes in the evening. We always slept very well. Caroline and Stephen obviously love their home in the hills and they are very gracious, friendly, and helpful hosts. We will be highly recommending their home to all our family and friends. And, if lucky enough, we would love to return for another stay in their home. Thank you Caroline and Stephen for your hospitality and your friendship!

What a lovely apartment with gorgeous views
I cannot recommend this property enough, unless you hate mountain roads ! The apartment has everything you could reasonably ask for. The owners are attentive and genuine and have mastered the art of not appearing to be in your face whilst trying to look after you. The position of the property is simply stunning and definitely don't make assumptions from the drive from Bologna - which is rather flat and uninteresting. To wake to the views from the bedrooms every day was a true privilege and left me somewhat envious of Caroline and Stephen. There is lots to do around particularly if you are a car nut or just relax around the pool, drink fine Italian wine and enjoy the rest.

A tranquil hilltop haven
We spent a glorious 8 days in Casa Brown. Stephen and Caroline could not have been more helpful. The views are stunning and we left refreshed and relaxed. We enjoyed several meals in local restaurants suggested by our hosts. Would highly recommend this as a base to explore the area or just to chill and get away from it all. The views from the pool are breathtaking.

Best hosts ever!
We heartily recommend a vacation at Casa Brown. Caroline and Stephen were warm, welcoming, helpful and generous. We arrived in a Fiat, 8 person van we unaffectionately labeled “the beast” which was surely too big for the narrow, wiggly roads. We comprised a group of 2 grandparents, 2 parents and 2 grandchildren and found ample space in the beautifully decorated apartment. The picture of the swimming pool on the website is beautiful, but magnify that view to all directions. The apartment had 2 baths and 3 bedrooms with a large, stocked kitchen / living area, with a balcony. The weather in many of the places we visited was hot, so coming back to the house was a treat with the breezes cooling us. The apartment stayed cool with the terrific windows and shutters. One of our daughters especially loved Winnie the dog, Ginger and Basil, the cats, and being able to go outside and pick fresh plums and figs. The pool was a plus for our grand -daughter and her mother. Photography opportunities were everywhere. We saw hares, lots of deer, and Winnie up on her hind legs checking out the deer. This is truly a lovely part of Italy. We traveled to Venice, Verona, Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Abetone, local shopping, and took two nights away to visit Rome and Pompeii. We got a brief overview of the gems of Italy, and in retrospect would have spent far more time relaxing at Casa Brown. We had to return to the U.S. to get rested! People everywhere were friendly and fun. We were only sorry we did’t have time for the local Parmesan cheese farm visit. The Parmesan cheese sample Caroline and Stephen gave us was delicious. Who knew you actually slice and eat it- not just use if for spaghetti! We thank Caroline and Stephen for a wonderful family vacation and especially recommend Casa Brown for more relaxation than we took advantage of! Caroline and Stephen absolutely thought of everything one could want in a vacation getaway.

Wonderful Retreat in the Appenino Modenese
Our family spend an amazing two weeks in June at Casa Brown. The location is absolutely stunning and the accommodations are beautifully maintained, well equipped and very comfortable. Caroline and Stephen are generous hosts who ensured that our stay was unforgettable. Casa Brown is in the midst of the beautiful Appenino Modenese but is also convenient to the historic cities of Modena and Bologna, which are very much worth visiting. We found the location great for hiking (the area has a well defined trail network) and for exploring the charming local villages, all in the absence of crowds. Of course, the food in the region is the best in Italy! We highly recommend Casa Brown as a destination for those who want to experience the beauty of the Appenino Modenese in a wonderful setting in comfort and tranquility.

Immaculate apartment with stunning views and great hosts
We had a fantastic autumn week at 'Casa Brown'. Caroline and Stephen are extremely generous and friendly hosts, who are happy to give you plenty of tips for your stay - and some homemade culinary creations courtesy of Caroline's fabulous work with the fruits of the local land. (We think her limoncello outshines the version served at the local restaurants). She and Stephen are equally happy to let you do your own thing and enjoy a very comfortable place to stay. The apartment has everything you need, including breathtaking views of the appenine hills, with no sign of industry, or indeed anything other than rural beauty in every direction. Local towns and villages are all worth exploring - as are local bars, cafes and very reasonable trattorias. Further afield are the more urban delights of cities such as Modena and Bologna. Either way you'll get used to some windy roads: our advice is look at the scenery, wind down a window and stop regularly for coffee or gelato - and any car sickness is easily avoided. All-in-all a holiday to be whole-heartedly recommended - and that's before you consider the solar-heated swimming pool which, in late October, we only imagined rather than enjoyed.

An amazing holiday easily surpassing our expectations; great location, beautiful views & fab hosts.
Stephen and Caroline made us feel really welcome from the moment we arrived at Casa Brown. Everything you could ask for to ensure a relaxing and stressfree holiday was provided; including a comprehensuive welcome pack with beer and wine (just what we needed after our journey) and all the basics plus extras we could have wished for. There were towels for both indoor and outdoor use and adaptors, books, DVDs etc...even the hand soap in the bathroom was of a better quality than we would use at home! Our whole family enjoyed the somewhat hilly walks in the beautiful countryside and we wished our dog had been with us. The views were tremendous and the guided tour of the immediate area that Stephen took us on was extremely interesting, even if we didn't manage to see all the potential views as the weather was hazy. The pool area was brilliant and it was lovely to spend time relaxing as a family around the pool. The meals we experienced in the surrounding area were great and the locals very friendly and helpful - especially as none of us speak any Italian. Stephen took us on a tour of the parmesan factory which was really interesting and not to be missed and we ended up coming home with cheese that took us up to our weight limit in our luggage! We would have loved to have spent longer at Casa Brown, but have all come home feeling very relaxed. We would love to return in the future. Thank you for a wonderful stay Stephen and Caroline!

A beautiful house in fantastic surroundings
We had an extremely pleasant stay in Casa Brown in july with our 4 kids (from age 8 to 17). We enjoyed the surrounding nature, the pool, the walks (and a single run. HOT!!) and the small villages nearby as well as the extraordinary hospitality of Stephen and Caroline, who introduced us to the local sights, culture and restaurants. The apartment is very spacious and tastefully decorated with great care for the original house. It had everything we needed (including wifi). We took a day trip through the mountains all the way to Lucca and Pisa. A three hour drive with spectacular views. We also took a trip to a local market in Pavullo (dont miss the icecream in K2) - very recommendable. It seems that very few tourists have found their way to this area of Italy - making it perfect for anyone who prefers the quiet, authentic lifestyle of rural Italy. All in all a very very nice stay and we plan to come back to explore the area more.

Idyllic
Spent a very relaxing week at Casa Brown and we will definitely be returning. The apartment is in a stunning location with views all around and the new pool could not be in a better setting. Caroline and Stephen were excellent hosts and had thought of everything to ensure our stay was comfortable. The apartment had everything we needed, with plenty of space and homely touches. We spent our days relaxing by the pool and exploring the local area and very much look forward to a return visit.

Beautiful location! Great hosts - friendly and welcoming. Clean and bright apartment.
My family and I stayed at Casa Brown for a week in July. It was a truly wonderful and peaceful place. Caroline and Stephen couldn't have been better hosts. They did everything to make us feel welcome and even provided a tour of the local Parmesan cheese factory, where you can see how 'Parmegiano' is produced from start to finish as well as taste the various varieties. This was one of the highlights of our stay! Casa Brown is in a beautiful location, and the new swimming pool with its background of hills and valleys is the icing on the cake. The photos of the apartment and its surroundings don't do it justice. We can recommend this apartment to anyone who loves amazing views, enjoys hiking and wants to enjoy the Italian countryside and culture at its best.

casa brown review
We stayed at the Casa Brown apartment for a week in May 2014. Our stay was the final week of a tour of Switzerland and Northern Italy. We were looking for peace and relaxation in a rural italian environment and that was exactly what we found at Casa Brown. The apartment itself was newly decorated and furnished to a very high standard and it was all in pristine condition. The owners were very helpful and welcoming, suggesting several excellent restaurants, scenic walking routes, and other useful local information. It was a very convenient base for exploring the beautiful countryside of Emilia Romagna. I would definitely recommend a holiday at Casa Brown!

Relaxing stay in Apennines
We stayed for just under a week in this beautiful apartment. The drive down from Bologna airport was easy. It took about one and a half hours. The roads for the last bit were narrow and windy but there is hardly any traffic in this area. We had a very warm welcome from the owners, a retired couple from Sussex. They live in the bottom part of the house (with their two lovely dogs). They were always friendly and helpful - particularly with information about the locality. The house has been recently refurbished to a very high standard and is very clean throughout. There are two bathrooms which are excellent. The views from the apartment are stunning - you are near the top of a mountain and look down a valley. We originally had plans to do day trips to Bologna and Modena but simply relaxed in the locality visiting small towns and villages. Although the area doesn't have the historic hill top towns of Tuscany/Umbria, it is very beautiful and authentic - there were hardly any other tourists. We spent hours watching the tractors doing the first cut of hay in the meadows below the house. It was amazing seeing them cling to the steep valley sides! The whole valley echoed to the sounds of cuckoos. We also saw a lovely bird called the hoopoe and there were buzzards hovering above. On one evening we saw deer in the meadow immediately below the house. It is very wooded on the tops of the mountains - covered in oak, chestnut trees. There are excellent walking tracks through the woods. It only takes about 45 minutes to get to the top of Monte Giulia. The roads are also very quiet so we often just walked along these. Overall, we had a very relaxing break and we look forward to going back sometime to do some more walking in this beautiful area. Jo

Restful break with stunning views
We stayed for almost a week in this lovely holiday apartment and had a wonderful, peaceful late winter break with our two children (11 and 10). The whole house has just been completely refurbished so everything felt very new and clean. Living space is ample and the kitchen is very well equipped. The bedrooms are huge, airy and well-furnished. There were two bathrooms between the three bedrooms. Hot water and heating were excellent (both important at this time of year). The most striking thing about the location is that beautiful views of the Apennines stretch in every direction. By day, the hilly pastures are peppered with hamlets and at night the nearby tiny floodlit chapel can be seen just across the valley. For when there is plenty of snow, ski resorts can be reached within an hour. We visited Sestola which is a lovely town (to explore the area you do need a car). We spent our days reading, drawing, visiting nearby villages and towns and walking. There are good walks in all directions (on and off road) and there is a National Park nearby with a lovely mountain restaurant. The area also has a rich and interesting history from WWII. Evenings were spent relaxing or going for a pizza at the delightful local and extremely welcoming pizzeria. Our 10 year old was very impressed when a second pizza appeared for him with the explanation that since the first was slightly misshapen, as a matter of pride the 'pizzaoiolo' had to provide him with a perfect one! Thoroughly recommend this if you are looking for a very comfortable, welcoming break away from it all!

Host profile image
In 2013 we made the momentous decision to move to Emilia Romagna. We found a house that fulfilled our requirements, the main one being beautiful views in every possible direction! Family and friends visit us here regularly. We live a relaxed country life with our dog and cats, and have relished the work involved in renovating this large house which had been empty for twenty years. We have been thrilled by the warm welcome of all the local people we have met, and are delighted to feel a part of the community in such a short space of time.
My wife Caroline grew up in Northern Italy where she learned Italian before her family returned to England.
The area appealed to us both for the setting and the climate. We have full-blown winters with lots of snow and summers where the temperatures often sit around the low 30s for weeks at a time. This is a lovely quiet environment, which is also close enough to cultural centres to fulfil a broad range of holiday requirements.

Why they chose this property

When you sit outside the house you hear absolutely nothing except the occasional bird of prey, working tractor or chainsaw. Very occasionally you hear classical music coming across the valley, and we think this may be the local farmer playing music to his cows which produce milk for Parmigiano Reggiano cheese! The peace and tranquility is the main reason we chose this location, as well as the chance to live a simple life without the influence of too much modern technology and noise. Our lives and diets have changed immeasurably simply by following the Italian way of using fruit and vegetables when they are in season, rather than buying everything all year round from the supermarkets.

What makes this property unique

There is an impressive array of seasonal foods available in Emilia Romagna. You may want to try the Modena balsamic vinegar, the Parma ham or the Parmigiano Reggiano parmesan cheese, not to mention the range of wines also on our doorstep.
This is a large and airy apartment only recently completed, and is easy to get to from Bologna airport (about 70 minutes).
We supply a simple welcome pack of food and drink so that you don't have to rush out shopping the moment you get here.
