About this property

Converted Barn Nestled In The Countryside

Situated in Saint Brice de Landelles, a village with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside, Le Haut Champ gîte is a converted barn dating from the 19th century and is full of character with modern conveniences.

It is set in a tranquil location with stunning views of the local countryside yet close to historic sites, such as Le Mont Saint Michel, Fougères Castle, Dinan, Saint Malo, Rennes, The Cascades in Mortain and many others. Being only a few kilometres from both the Brittany and Pays de la Loire borders it is the perfect location to enjoy the many visitor attractions and local towns and villages the three regions have to offer.

Within easy reach you can discover plenty of walks and cycle routes throughout the countryside or on the dedicated Voie Verte pathways, beaches with miles of sand, interesting towns and villages, beautiful gardens or a variety of museums and galleries with an abundance of history. Alternatively you could find a local café to relax in with a glass of wine, cider or a cup of coffee and just enjoy a slice of French life.

Local facilities in Saint Martin de Landelles (5 km) include a local baker, grocers, butcher and a restaurant. Nearby there are some great restaurants serving traditional French cuisine (Chez Agnès in Lapenty is a favourite). The nearest town of Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët is just a 15 minute drive away with its popular weekly market brimming with local produce and regional specialities. Avranches and Fougères are large towns with busy markets and a good range of bars, restaurants and shops and both are only 30 minutes away.

Close to 3 ferry ports (Caen, Cherbourg and Saint Malo) and Rennes airport Le Haut Champ gîte is perfect for visiting southern Normandy and the neighbouring regions or as a stopover en route to the centre/south of France.

Just fantastic!
We had a very pleasant stay at le Haut Champs. Anne and Simon are terrific hosts that will help you with any question. The house was immaculately clean and well fitted. We had very nice bike tours on the voie vertes with our electric bikes. We would surely come again.

Mooie lokatie, vriendelijke eigenaars zeer behulpzaam, goed verzorgde Gite.

Beautiful Gite set in peaceful countryside
My wife and I stayed here for a week at the end of August. The gite was perfect having everything we needed, well presented and spotlessly clean. It is in a rural location with views out over the countryside and is an ideal base for cycling. St Malo, Mont St Michel and Granville are all worth a visit. Anne and Simon were also wonderful hosts and made us feel welcome. We would definitely stay there again.

Fabulous Place, Lovely Hosts, A Perfect Week
What a great location! We (2 german girlfriends) spent a very peaceful week in this wonderful house. The gite is well equipped, exceptionally clean and comfortable. We found everything as it was described. The Haut Champ is surrounded by fields in a very charming environment and it was perfect for us stressed people to relax and to visit Mont St. Michel, Granville, Chausey Islands and more. Anne and Simon welcomed us very friendly with a delicious piece of chocolate cake. They were the perfect hosts, very helpful and with information about all things you need or want (shopping, good restaurants, nice places to see and so on). Without doubt we would recommend this gite to anyone who is looking for a comfortable and quiet place to stay. Many thanks to the lovely hosts Anne and Simon for this relaxing time!

Very tidy and cosy gîte at great location
Extremely tidy and clean house that has everything you need: cosy living room, well-equipped kitchen, nice bedrooms and very clean bathrooms. The gîte is situated in a beautiful and quiet location, in the middle of the fields, but still close enough (with the car) to a larger town with plenty of supermarkets. Anne and Simon are the kindest hosts, they made sure we had a lovely, comfortable stay. I would surely recommend this gîte to everyone who is looking for an enjoyable stay in Normandy!

Gorgeous gite in beautiful countryside setting
What a wonderful gite this is! Our family stayed for four nights in August 2016 - the gite is beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. Home made chocolate cake on arrival! Two bedrooms, both with en-suites, great kitchen and living space. Situated in beautiful French countryside, it really is idyllic. Anne and Simon were perfect hosts and we enjoyed chatting to them about their life in France. They also gave us tips on local attractions and restaurants. We visited Fougeres (castle tour is a must), Bayeux and the Normandy beaches, all within easy driving distance. We have holidayed in France for the past 15 years and this is one of the best gites we have ever stayed in. We will definitely return and would recommend to others without hesitation.

Wonderful gite in a tranquil rural setting
We spent a week in this wonderful gite set in the quiet Normandy countryside. For us (a couple) it was perfect with the gite having everything we needed. It was comfortable, finished to a high standard and very clean. The owners Anne and Simon were very welcoming and provided us with plenty of tips and recommendations for our stay. Even though set in the countryside access to shops and restaurants was never far away (nearest town and big supermarket is 10 minutes away). We visited some of the local tourist attractions like Mont St Michel, Granville and the chateau at Fourgeres, but also enjoyed relaxing in the garden and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. There are many things that we didn’t find time to do such as visiting the Normandy beaches, St Malo, Bayeux, Dinan and many more; so we will have to go back! We have visited France many times and stayed in many different locations and gites and this is our favourite to date, we can’t wait to return.

Fabulous Hosts, Fabulous Place
Great location. Quiet and private without being isolated. Easily placed to make the most of the wonderful soft countryside and the beautiful shorelines. The Gite is extremely comfortable, well appointed and extremely relaxing. The hosts could not have been more welcoming, being both charming and well informed. A very enjoyable break, which we hope to repeat.

Perfect Bliss
Where do I start? A+ It's not often I'm lost for words, but on arrival at Le Haut Champ I was rendered speechless! Sheer bliss. The perfect country location, the perfect hosts and a property finished to perfection. The standard of finish and cleanliness from Anne & Simon is probably the best I have experienced in France and we have been travelling to France for many years. The local town or surrounding villages are all within a few minutes drive or short walk. Everything you could possibly need is in Saint Hilaire Du Harcouet. Around 40 mins to St Malo, 30 mins to Mont St Michelle and 20 mins to the coast, the location could not be better. Will we go again? Without doubt. Would we encourage others to go? Only if they don't spoil it for the rest of us. Many thanks to Simon & Anne and hope to see you again soon.

A Wonderful Holiday Location
We have just returned from a two week stay at Le Haut Champ and it was really lovely. We have stayed in numerous gites over many years and this is one of the best! It is set in a beautiful, quiet location surrounded by rolling countryside and is stylish, comfortable and very well equipped. It is immaculately clean and beds and bathrooms are of a high standard. Simon and Anne are helpful and informative hosts - friendly but never intrusive. They go to great lengths to ensure that guests have everything they need. We certainly recommend Le Haut Champ as a perfect place to stay and look forward to visiting again soon.

Exceptional!!!
We spent Christmas week at The Haut Champ, and what a delightful week it was. The location was picturesque, peaceful and easy to find. The accommodation was spacious, modern, but with plenty of character and most importantly – immaculate! Our hosts greeted us on arrival with a warm welcome, not only from them but also a roaring fire in the log burner – even Christmas directions to make it feel seasonal. During our week we spent time in the home, enjoying the fire, local produce (i.e. Cheese and wine!) but also got out and about to Mont St. Michel, Fougeres and Avranches. I cannot recommend a stay here highly enough - it has everything you could want, summer, winter, busy, quiet. My Husband and I returned feeling relaxed and refreshed. Try it!

Lovely Le Haut Champ
Apologies for the blatant alliteration in the title but the short stay my wife and I had at Le Haut Champ really was lovely. Considering it was the last week in September, the weather was kind to us with the only wet day being the day we arrived and drove south from Le Havre (not the best choice of ferry port - Caen is closer). Simon and Anne were the perfect hosts and were extremely helpful in identifying places to see and with information about the locality. The gite was clean well furnished and in excellent order. Despite and inner desire to keep it to myself as a French hideaway, I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who is looking for a comfortable place to stay. The property is ideally located for visiting the attractions of both Normandy and Brittany. We particularly enjoyed Mont St. Michel, Bayeaux and the Breton capital Rennes. There is a large local market in St. Hilaire de Harcouet every Wednesday which is great for browsing and sampling the local delicacies. Don't fuss about looking for other locations, book this one - just don't tell too many people, we need to leave a space for us to go back!

A perfect property
Arriving late on Sunday evening the owners were ready for us with a welcoming smile and a beautifully presented property. It was warm, comfortable, very clean and as described on the web. I would just say that if I had fitted out the gite myself, this is how I would like to think I would have presented it, it was quite simply superb.

A Perfect Hideaway
In the words of a well known TV advert Le Haut Champ does exactly what it says on the label !! The website description is extremely well written and very accurate. Facilities and location cannot be faulted. The property has been very tastefully converted but manages to retain some of its old world charm. The property is very clean, well decorated and beautifully maintained. Worthy of note is the access to the two bedrooms which is via separate stairways off opposite sides of the lower floor lounge area. Everything required for an enjoyable self catering holiday is to hand. The owners are right on hand and provide a very good level of service. However, a car is essential as the property is very rural, but the tranquility and peaceful atmosphere of the surrounding country side provide for a very relaxing and stress free vacation. For anyone wishing to get away from the rigour of city life for a week then this is certainly the place to come. To be able to sit in the garden and watch the sun set of an evening, with a nice bottle of French wine and not a sound to be heard is very rewarding. Le Mont St Michel is well worth a visit, as is the market town of St Hilaire de Harcouet. Best beach is Carrolles, approx. 50 mins drive. Overall Le Haut Champ is very competitively priced for such a high standard of accommodation and we certainly will have no hesitation in recommending it to relatives and friends.

Exactly as it says on the tin!
My wife and I stayed here for a 2 week holiday in August. It is very well furnished, very comfortable and exceptionally clean. It is set in a very quiet and rural location and well placed to visit lots of places of interest in the area. Amenities are a short drive away. Simon and Anne are great hosts, very friendly and knowledgeable of the local area. Thanks for a lovely holiday!

Perfect Rural Retreat
We enjoyed a very peaceful week in Le Haut Champ and hosts Anne and Simon were genuinely welcoming and very helpful throughout our stay. The Gite was beautiful, and was prepared to an excellent standard. It has a fully equipped kitchen with everything we needed for our stay and is tastefully furnished throughout. Both on-suite shower rooms are superb. The views are wonderful and the cottage is surrounded by open countryside. We loved the close proximity to rural life with friendly cows in the neighbouring field and of course Molly and Gizmo. It was ideal for touring the more southern parts of Normandy, as well the western coastline with its lovely beaches. Brittany is just short drive away and the D-Day beaches are all within easy reach. All in all a very enjoyable, relaxing stay helped by the perfect little base to return to after a day's touring. We would have no hesitation in recommending Le Haut Champ to anyone planning to come to this region. Anne and Simon are lovely hosts.

About the host

Hosted by Simon and Anne Frost

Host profile image
Anne and I (Simon) are originally from Hampshire but moved to Normandy in 2013 with our two cats, Molly and Gizmo. Over the years we have spent much time traveling in France but we fell in love with the Normandy/Brittany people, countryside, history and of course the food and drink! We live next door to the gîte and will be happy to provide as much or as little help as you require. For those of you who have limited experience of France, we will be delighted to share our tips and local knowledge, provide you with suggested day itineraries or you may just prefer to use Le Haut Champ to explore by yourselves. Either way, we look forward to welcoming you to our gîte.

Why they chose this property

We chose this part of southern Normandy for the beautiful countryside, the close proximity to the coast, the climate, the historic sights and leisure activities, and its’ easy access to the Channel ports. We love the friendliness of the people, the delicious food and drink, the markets, the slower pace of life here and the variety of things that you can choose to do each day. We were also attracted by the closeness to neighbouring Brittany which is just 3 fields away! It’s also a short car journey over the border to the Pays de la Loire, so there are plenty of opportunities to explore all three regions.

What makes this property unique

Although we are in a rural situation, on a no through road and surrounded by fields it is easy to reach many of the local villages within minutes and other large towns in 30 - 45 minutes. Because we are in a rural area we also have spectacular views of the sky at night. So it can be useful to bring your binoculars, sit in the garden after dark and appreciate the clear view of the stars and sky. You may also be able to catch a glimpse of our resident barn owl!
