About this property

Villa l'orto Near Portixeddu and Buggerru close to superb 3km long beach

Beautiful villa set in very private grounds yet so close to Portixeddu beach, which is just 3 minutes drive and one of the best beaches in Sardinia. For this year we have super fast internet and wifi. There are bars and restaurants including a great seafood restaurant recently featured by Rick Stein in his BBC series. 5 minutes further on is the harbour village of Buggerru. The area has numerous quality restaurants which are an easy five or ten minute drive from the house and none of which is expensive. Great places to watch the beautiful sunsets over the sea enjoyed on the western side of the island whilst enjoying the very best in Italian and Sardinian food. The tourist information site has details of restaurants and some great photography. This coastal location just below the Costa Verde really is one of the best spots on the island close to some of the finest and yet least crowded beaches, such as the closest at Portixeddu, a fantastic 3km long sandy beach, Scivu, Picinas and Cala Domestica. Scivu has the largest sand dunes in Europe. Cala Domestica, by contrast, has a sandy beach surrounded by rocky cliffs, a sheltered bay and fantastic snorkeling. As you can see from the photographs, there are no high-rise buildings, in fact recent changes in the law now prevents building within 3km of the sea. The UNESCO listed area of Sulcis Iglesiente is surrounded by mountains, a great location for trekking, rock climbing (arrampicata buggerru) mountain or road biking especially the cooler months and is close to the Temple of Antas (Tempio di Antas) and other historical sites. There are several established rock climbing venues in this area, and the European surfing championships are often held there. It is a great area for wind surfing. There are opportunities for horse/donkey trekking including a popular full day trip across the hills to Scivu beach. Great snorkeling in lovely rocky bays and some excellent sea fishing within five minutes drive. Plenty of space around you for games on the beaches, even in August, makes a refreshing change from other parts of Europe. Set back just a few minutes from the beach down a little used country road (ideal for cycling safely to the beach with children) this recently built villa has contemporary furniture and modern conveniences and is set in very private grounds. The setting is idyllic, to breakfast on the balcony is a lovely experience in itself with fantastic views and total quiet. The large barbecue/oven, the tranquil picturesque setting and lovely dining area on the balcony combine to make for lovely evenings at the house after a hard day at the beach! The large natural grounds offer children the chance to explore and for imaginative play in safety. The new outdoor shower is handy for both kids and sunbathers to cool down. In the grounds of the villa that are mostly wild, it is possible to see and hear some interesting animal species, for example we have "singing" nightjars and calling scopes owls which can be heard from the balcony at night. You may see colourful Bee-eaters and because the grounds are wooded, guests can enjoy the evening song of 'tree frogs' This Easter (2014) we were lucky to see a Hoopoe in the garden. Hopefully it will be there when we go back. It is occasionally possible for guest parties and friends (max 10) to hire and enjoy a beautiful skippered Predator 7m RIB for diving, snorkeling , fishing, general bay hopping, swimming in beautiful locations and trips to cosmopolitan Carloforte (a great lunch stop). Adventurous adults and children alike are able to try our knee-boards, wake-boards and skis, in beautiful surroundings. The Predator 660 Rib can be seen in the foreground of the Carloforte photo, it offers a fantastic opportunity to see and experience the islands coastline and otherwise inaccessible bays from the sea. The boat is a super safe 'Category B' craft capable of handling almost any sea conditions. Recent guests used the boat for birdwatching. We visited Carloforte to see the rare Eleonora Falcons nesting there. Please enquire for full details and availability during your stay at the time of booking. The villa is situated in a lovely part of the island, with the very best in scenery and beaches but without the expensive day to day living costs that you may find in other parts of the island. We know the area well and have left some very useful area tips in a visitors book and this has been added to by our various guests. With tips ranging from where to find the local spring to refill your water bottles, to the whereabouts of the butcher who sells the best Sardinian sausage!, we hope it helps to get you settled in and your holiday started in the area. There are also English books and DVDs to entertain guests and a very rare item in Italy - an electric kettle!. Should you wish to have a chat about the area or the villa please contact us (after 4pm on weekdays, anytime at weekends) Thank you for your interest.

Nice location to visit Costa Verde, close to fantastic beaches
Appartment was OK for 4 people and was a good location to visit surroundings (Piscinas, Montevecchio, Buggerru...). Beaches are quite close (10 min drive) and very beautiful. Fluminimaggiore located at 10 min drive offers nice authentic restaurants and small markets. Communication with owner went perfect.

Wild Sardinia
The house is located on the charming countryside in still savage Sardinia. It is quite an isolated spot: to get there you have to cross the mountains North of Iglesias (lots of passes, small roads and endless curves) and once you are there, at each time you want to do an excursion or a trip, you are obliged to do the same tiresome journeys... The location itself consists in fact just of the appartment on the top floor surrounded by a huge balcony. There is always a nice, refreshing breeze in the evenings, even when it is very hot. Unfortunately the garden is quite neglected (and extremely thorny) and the rusty, old vehicules stored up on one side are not a very aesthetic sight indeed! While the bedrooms were spacious and comfortable (no need for air condition because of the wind from north/west), the kitchen was small and not very well equipped. There was only one frying pan, which was totally destroyed and the pots were mostly in a desolate condition. Last but not the least, we missed some cooling shade in the house - there ought to be some shutters towards south and east or at least some blinders on the huge glass doors - like all Mediterranean houses usually have... The location is a good place for a short time stay (with children not too small) and certainly the area is not very touristy. Above all the villa is very quiet and peaceful. Of course one should not miss out the mines and the museums: the history of Sardinia is very interesting in this respect and local tour guides are very good teachers!

Beautiful house in stunning surroundings
Alan and Sharon were fabulous hosts and helped us out on numerous occasions and told us about the local events that were going on. We had a fabulous stay, The house was lovely with fantastic views all around and the facilities were excellent, The local beach was perfect, with a backdrop of the mountains, we also made use of the mountain bikes which were great! Our children loved swimming and snorkelling in the sea, it's perfect for families. It really was a very enjoyable holiday, although the weather was very hot the house gave lovely shade and the beach had a lovely breeze. All of us would love to come back, and we'd like to thank Alan and Sharon and her boys for making our stay so enjoyable. Robin, Jane Jan and family

Wonderful week in beautiful villa
We had a wonderful week at Villa L'Orto. The villa is extremely comfortable and lots of effort has been made to ensure that guests have everything they need. Having only been built in relatively recent years, the villa is well designed to ensure that there is plenty of shade and cool areas during what was an exceptionally hot August. The finish of the building is of high quality and modern with just a nod to rural Sardinia. We were very grateful for the air conditioning in both bedrooms and so enjoyed very comfortable nights' sleeps. When we arrived, the whole property was spotlessly clean. The kitchen was well equipped and the bathroom was a luxurious size. There were plenty of books about the island as well as novels and games, and there were lots of DVDs to watch. Alan, the owner, provided us with very detailed information about the property in advance and most usefully, about places to eat nearby. We enjoyed an outstanding meal at the nearby agritourismo with stunning views of the sea. The two local beaches were beautiful - relatively quiet with mainly Italian tourists and the sea was aquamarine. A perfect place to stay with 2 children.

Wonderful!
We spent two great weeks at Villa L'Orto. The house is tucked away in the foothills, up a quiet country road amongst olive and citrus groves. All you can hear are birds, crickets and the goats next door. Absolute peace and seclusion, but hop on one of the house bikes and you can be in the tiny village of Portixeddu or on a wonderful sandy beach in just 10 minutes (3 minutes by car!). Everything was as described, the owner Alan was really helpful and all his restaurant and other recommendations were great. The house is compact with a huge balcony along the whole length of the building and the accommodation is just as good for 2 people as for a larger group. We loved the outdoor shower! Great hiking and mountain biking trails lead directly from the house either to several secluded beaches or into the hills. The dunes extend quite a way inland in some places, but generally the area is surprisingly green with lots of evergreen shrubs. A dramatic (sometimes challenging) trail runs along the whole coastline in the area and hiking over the cliffs to tiny coves with crystal clear, turquoise water, makes a great day out. It was late season and some facilities were not open every day, but it didn't give us any problems, and the roads and beaches were blissfully empty. The area is not overly touristy or commercialised and everything had a very chilled, authentic feeling about it. The ruined remains of the mining industry on the coast give it a special flair. If you need a shopping fix, Cagliari and Iglesias are also not too far away! For a relaxing holiday, with lots of outdoor activities, mountains, beautiful beaches and wonderful scenery, it's perfect.

Why they chose this property

We were introduced to this area through a family connection. A little hidden paradise that has only recently been discovered by UK holiday makers, yet a firm favourite area of Italian an Northern European travellers.

What makes this property unique

We chose the land and built the house so we have a natural affinity for both the house and the location. We continue to be overwhelmed by the peaceful beauty of this unspoilt area. We really miss the house when we are away from it.
