Absolutely fantastic - perfect family holiday
The villa was one of the best we have ever stayed in with beautiful views (it’s up on a hill side), stunning pool area which is perfect for kids as it has a shallow baby area at one end and is so well equipped that it felt like a real home from home. We really appreciated the cot, high chair, baby monitor and stair gates and the provision of pool towels. The local taverna is a real gem and great that they can do take away food. The owner was very helpful from the beginning and made the whole booking and checking in process really easy. We would love to stay again.
Beautiful villa with great views, lots of seating areas outside, lovely pool, good barbecue, everything you need for a wonderful stay. Villa manager (Yvonne) extremely helpful and responsive when we had a problem. Owners must use the villa themselves as it is extremely well-equipped and maintained. Overall a great experience.

Lovely villa in an impressive location with fantastic views of the surrounding area.
As a family of four with a 5 and 3 yr old we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the villa. We made use of the pool every day and appreciated the inflatables provided. Loved eating out on the terrace watching the changing moods of the mountains. The villa is in a good location for visiting nearby beaches as well as visiting Hania and the White Mountains.
As previous guests have commented the property next door is still not complete with workers there most days. However this did not impact on the enjoyment of the villa.

Beautiful views, Lovely villa, very clean and tidy.
We loved Villa Koumos, the views are quite special. And the local village and surrounding area is rich with history. Internally, it ticked all the boxes and served 4 adults and 2 children very well, with safety gates on all stairways. The view from the main bedroom is beautiful to wake up to. The pool and pool area is well maintained and the pool was a warm 28-29 degrees. The pool man is also the 'go to' man if there are any problems. We did have an issue with one of the a/c units but understand that is being replaced.
The local restaurants are good and the bakery has fresh bread every morning, and they make amazing cake. The restaurants at the beaches which are a short drive away are all very good and we found the standard of food and local wine was excellent.
The beach is safe for swimming and has been awarded a blue flag for cleanliness and lack of pollution.
There are some interesting places to visit, but a car is a necessity.
The villa next door is still under construction, but is now almost finished. This did impact us when sitting outside upstairs, but couldn't be heard down in the pool area and wasn't constant. It didn't impact our holiday and we all had a fabulous time there. We would certainly book Villa Koumos again.

Lovely holiday home spoiled by building works
The property looked lovely and there were many personal touches.
HOWEVER the owner failed to inform us about a house being built next door, the noise and dust from the works was relentless throughout the day.
The noise levels on many occasions exceeded the legal limit for which ear defenders would need to be worn of which I took several videos.
We immediately contacted the owner, but we were asked not to contact the owner again by the local manager due to a bereavement, which we duly honoured.
We left it sometime after our return to appeal to the owner for a partial refund, however this was declined.
We paid a considerable amount for our 10 days, but found it too noisy to use by day & ended up going out during the day most days, which incurred further outlay.
A real disappointment caused by the noise, as well as the let down of the owner failing to inform us (we were informed by the manager that he should have let us know of the impending works, and we would not have booked had we known) and also the lack of understanding at our loss of enjoyment for myself, my wife and young children.
A 20% discount from a future visit was offered, however it was not much use given that our holiday had been spoiled & we were unlikely to be visiting again.
A real shame, but all I can say is buyer beware, as you have no recourse.
We had a lovely holiday in this beautiful, well equipped villa. The views of both sea and mountains are spectacular from the terraces, and the area is very quiet and peaceful. John was super helpful in providing details of good places to eat in the local area - all of which we tried and weren't disappointed! The beaches are all good, with the closest one a short 10 minute drive away. Would definitely recommend this villa for a great holiday.
We really enjoyed our stay at Villa Koumos. The villa was perfect-spotlessly clean, beautiful pool and amazing views- the villa itself a real home from home. Communication between us and owner easy and access to an attentive villa manager while we were there. The area is peaceful and picturesque but with good facilities in the local village - choice of great tavernas within walking distance, small stores and other interesting villages to visit within a short drive. All in all a great villa for a family holiday we would recommend Villa Koumos

Great property
We stayed at Villa Koumos end June/early July 2018. The villa is very well managed, clean and tidy, and exactly as seen and described on the website. Enjoyed the outside terraces, particularly sitting out in the evening on the upper terrace sofas, taking in the sunsets and the view.
Gavalochori is a delightful, peaceful village with a historic traditional centre, and ideally placed for visiting the whole of Western Crete. Chania, a beautiful Venetian harbour town, is just 45 minutes away, and local beaches 10 minute drive.

Lovely relaxing stay in peaceful surroundings
Well maintained villa and a very helpful maintenance man who ensures that everything in the villa and outside areas are kept to a high standard. Beautiful views of the village and surrounding area. We had spectacular thunder storms over the mountain together with wonderful sunsets. All windows and doors have heavy wooden shutters which keep out any village noise during the night, a problem we have had in other countries with dogs barking and cockerels crowing in the small hours of the morning. All in all we have had a brilliant relaxing holiday with a lovely pool to cool off in. The local cat adopted us until it discovered we were not giving it chicken every day and went back to it's home. The locals in the village are very friendly and although our Greek is very limited we managed to communicate really well. We would certainly recommend this villa for those who want privacy away from the crowds on the coast.

Fabulous villa with great views and only 10 minute walk in to the village
The villa was very well appointed with everything you would need even for an extended stay. The main balcony off the kitchen and living area is superb with views to the bay and is a great place to relax and dine - we spent a lot of time chatting and playing cards late into the evening on here. The pool was large compared to some we have stayed at with plenty of space to sit in sun or shade. There is also lots of nice walking around the valley. Although we used a car most days to go to the beach at Almyrida it is around 45 min walk and best done early for some shade. We have stayed in this area quite a few times now and enjoy the laid back atmosphere and the beach front restaurants.

Excellent villa in outstanding location
The property is very well located, with a very high standard of accommodation with outstanding views, fantastic beaches within a ten minute drive. The garden is superbly maintained and the heated pool is truly luxurious. The environment is very private and secluded, allowing for a very high degree of relaxation. Excellent tavernas, small grocery stores and a wonderful bakery are within walking distance. One of our best ever holidays!

A beautiful family Villa in a perfect location
Our family of four had a wonderful stay at Villa Koumos, despite the presence of building work next door which was very low key and did not impact on our privacy or ability to relax around the pool. Location is perfect; with the village a short walk down the hill with a choice of tavernas offering cheap great tasting local food (most meals cost between 50 and 60 EUR incl. drinks for 4 of us), it was not necessary to drive so we could all drink if we wanted to. The sandy beaches at Kalyves and Almyrida are within a 15 minute drive and offer clear blue water to swim and a choice of tavernas on the beach. You can rent kayaks etc. from Almyrida (but kids must be over 16). The villa itself is finished to a very high standard with all of the facilities a family could wish for - we especially were looking for somewhere with a comfortable lounge area and Villa Koumos did not disappoint. The welcome pack of food and drink on arrival was a pleasant surprise. Thank you John for a great holiday - we shall certainly consider coming back!

Beautiful villa in a stunning location
We had a wonderful stay at Villa Koumos. The villa is situated slightly in the hills which provides breathtaking views which we enjoyed from the upper terrace with a few glasses of the local wine. Villa comes with everything you could possibly need as well as some really useful touches such as a dvd collection which was perfect when the kids needed a break from the sun. The property and pool area were really well maintained and any problems we did have were really quickly resolved by the villa manager who couldn't have been more helpful. Aside from the fantastic local restaurants, which are only a 5min walk down the hill, there are some great beaches nearby and the beautiful old harbour in Chania is definitely worth a trip if you can bear to tear yourself away form the lovely pool area.

About the host
Hosted by John Butterworth
I live in Lincolnshire in the UK. I have a grown-up family and young grandchildren, who love to stay at Villa Koumos. This is why I've made sure it's a safe place for families with children. I was immediately attracted to this part of Crete and in 2014 I found Villa Koumos, my own piece of paradise. I enjoy spending time here with my family and friends and I invite you to do the same!.
Why they chose this property
When I read the visitor's book, I came across many guest comments about the fantastic sea and mountain views and evenings spent relaxing on the veranda and enjoying the sunsets. I really love this part of Crete and especially Gavalochori, which retains its Greek character. The cul de sac location, on the edge of the village, means few passing cars, peace and quiet, privacy and access to open countryside. The village shops and tavernas are within walking distance.
What makes this property unique
Safe drinking water from the taps and modern plumbing which means no smelly bin next to the toilets. Spacious bedrooms with plenty of wardrobe space and direct access to the outside. Two modern bathrooms. High ceilings in the living area and white walls create a light and airy feeling. All the kitchen and laundry equipment you would have at home. Even when fully occupied, there are sufficient outside areas for everyone to spread out, have their own space and enjoy the gardens. The pool is extra large and heated making it comfortable for swimming throughout the season.
