Perfect Break
The Barn at Vijon is exactly as advertised. Anne and John were there when we arrived to give us the warmest of welcomes and were easily contactable if we needed them. The property is very quiet, pretty and well facilitated. The view from the dining area balcony is breathtaking! We would thoroughly recommend this property and hope to return if they will have us.

Great stay
Beautiful property and accurately described. The barn was tastefully appointed and had everything we needed. Wifi and TV worked very well. John and Anne were very attentive and considerate throughout. The house and gardens provided a very private and relaxing setting. The additional storage area under the main floor was ideal for keeping our bikes.

Beautiful evenings with a tremendous view
Beautifully renovated and well-equipped barn with a lot of loving details, with a tremendous view over the sloping fields and groves . Relaxed and very quiet evenings on the balcony with a white owl flying by. Beautiful garden. Very friendly hosts.

Magical location and barn with outstanding hosts
Beautiful setting amongst the French countryside. Perfect location in which to experience a true sense of French life. The Barn was stunning with charming personal touches and attention to detail. Exceptional hosts who created a very warm welcoming ambiance and who put so much of themselves into creating a home from home. It was lovely to enjoy days out but it was equally lovely to come back home to the barn after a day out.

A haven of peace
We booked to stay at The Barn after a late decision to travel to this area. We liked what we saw on the website and were not disappointed. The Barn has been renovated to a very high standard and is equipped with everything needed for a short or long stay. Whilst the local area is great to visit with lots of traditional market towns we spent a lot of time enjoying the tranquil setting The Barn is in with its beautiful views across open country. The owners John and Anne were there to greet us upon arrival and made us feel very welcome from the outset. We were provided with a welcome pack of tea, coffee, milk, eggs etc which was very much appreciated. Vijon is a typical French rural village so if you're looking for a peaceful break with wonderful hosts and fabulous accommodation then this is the place for you. Nick & Sharon Green.

A lovely homely gite in a very relaxing, peaceful setting
The gite is very well equipped and set out with super views over the countryside from the terrace and a beautiful garden too. John and Anne are wonderful hosts who provide a comprehensive set of starter provisions as well as a steady stream of freshly picked fruit and vegetables from their garden. The village of Vijon is an excellent location for those looking for a break from the rat - race back home and great for cycling on the almost unlimited quiet lanes or local walking routes. All in all fantastic!

Fantastic stay- wonderfully equipped barn in a beautiful, quiet location
Extremely well equipped barn and a much appreciated welcome-pack of bread, milk, butter etc. We had a lovely stay with our 2 kids (4 & 7) with plenty to do in the surrounding area. Local bar has the essentials but no fresh bread, croissants etc- the only down side, really. Very hospitable hosts- would recommend thoroughly. Thank you John and Ann.

Great value, spacious gite in a quiet rural location
This is a great choice if you want to escape to an authentically rural area. Vijon is a very small village and the barn is on the edge, looking out onto open fields. It is next door to the owners' house, but very private with a garden that is not overlooked. Owners John and Anne are very friendly and approachable, so you are in good hands. They are experienced operators so everything has been thought out. The barn is bigger than it looks in the photos and would easily accommodate a family. Highly recommended.

Perfect retreat
We had a fabulous week in a beautiful setting! The barn was wonderful with lots of lovely quirky touches, it was fully equipped and spotlessly clean. Great bathroom with fabulous shower. British tv channels meant we kept up with events at Wimbledon & the Tour de France! We loved the area - a slice of the rural France undiscovered by tourism! Enjoying walks from the local villages using guides at the barn & fabulous meals at the nearby hotel-restaurant La Bonne Auberge! However what will we miss most - the balcony with its gorgeous views & the daily soap opera of the bull, cows & calves in the field! Though we mustn't forget the generous hospitality of our hosts Anne & John always there if you need them but keen to respect privacy! We appreciated the stocked fridge on arrival as well as the personal touches of fresh fruit and veg from the garden & Anne's homemade preserve! Our final evening was topped off by joining the locals for their Bastille Day Celebrations & impressive fireworks on the village football pitch. We certainly hope to return!

Wonderful!
The Barn really does look as gorgeous in real life as it does in the photos. It's beautifully furnished and very comfortable. We spent nearly every mealtime sitting on the balcony, looking out over the fields, and really didn't want to budge. Vijon is very tiny and amazingly peaceful. All you hear are the birds and the church clock, and the occasional tractor. John and Anne are lovely, and made us feel very welcome. There's a stash of bread, croissants, butter, jam, tea, coffee and milk all waiting for you when you arrive, and we had lettuce and new potatoes straight out of the veg patch as well. If you want to relax and recharge it's perfect.

A perfect "Get away from it all" hideaway
If you are looking for a perfect spot to relax and unwind, then look no further - this beautiful property in the middle of nowhere in the middle of France offers the perfect setting. The owners, John and Anne, welcomed us with a basket of local goodies and were always available without being intrusive, and the property was spotlessly clean, characterful and tastefully restored and decorated. I would have no hesitation in recommending The Barn to anone looking for a peaceful and relaxing break in a beautiful part of rural France.

Thank you very much to John and Anne for their welcome.

Peaceful and quiet rural retreat with beautiful outlook
This tastefully converted barn makes an ideal rural retreat, in a picturesque setting. John and Ann are attentive hosts and made us feel warmly welcome and cared for. Everything was set up with initial supplies of milk, eggs, scrumptious home-made raspberry jam and coffee waiting for our arrival. Plenty of internal space and well laid out over three levels, functional and well equipped kitchen and dining area; all finished in appealing woodwork. South-facing balcony with a delightful aspect. Variety of shops and restaurants within a 25km radius. Looking forward to coming again!

Brandnew, spotless, full of character
After a warm welcome we made a tour of the property, which is tastefully decorated, has all amenities you can ask for and has plenty of space. The view from the southside balcony shows the Berry countryside from its best. In St Sévère and Nouzerine are fine restaurants, with prices we can only dream of. A small shop + bar in Vijon will supply you with the most elementary goods just a few footsteps away. Conclusion: highly recommendable when exploring the region or for tranquillity-seekers.

The Barn at Vijon is a very comfortable property with beautiful views over quiet countryside
We had a very warm and friendly welcome from John & Anne, who were very hospitable and keen to make sure we were comfortable. The Barn was well equipped with everything you could think of, plus many thoughtfully provided extras - produce from their own garden, as well as staples for the kitchen when we first arrived. They had thought of everything - hairdryers, picnic set, picnic chairs, binoculars, to name but some of the unexpected delights provided. The property itself was spacious, with comfortable bedrooms and living area, an outside sitting area overlooking the garden and a south-facing balcony with views over the garden and countryside. It was a bird-watcher's dream as well as a lovely place to eat and relax. This is a perfect place for those who want a quiet and relaxing holiday away from it all. The local roads are quiet and the small sleepy towns in the area are a pleasure to visit. Thank you John & Anne for a very pleasant stay in Vijon.

A beautiful gite in a stunning part of France. Highly recommended
We would highly recommend staying at this gite. It is absolutely immaculate, and John and Anne have thought of everything you might need. We had a wonderful week, eating all our meals on the balcony looking out over the stunning countryside, the perfect spot! John and Anne really looked after us, bringing us delicious fruit and vegetables freshly picked from their garden. There are lots of places nearby with various restaurants and markets, a foodies paradise. This is a great place to stay, we loved our time there.

About the host

Hosted by John and Anne Thomson

Host profile image
John, from West Yorkshire and Anne, from Northumberland came to France in search of “The Good Life” in 2005. For 6 years they ran a successful Chambres d’hotes business in the Creuse and in 2012 decided that the time was right to undertake a new challenge. After renovating their own property they turned their attention to the barn and completed the transformation from an empty, unloved building that it was into the beautifully restored Gite that it now is.

Why they chose this property

Knowing the area around Boussac and Sainte Severe we were delighted when we found our new property in the village of Vijon in the very south of the Indre. As well as finding our new home we also knew that the barn, which came with the property, would make an ideal gite for visitors to also enjoy the area. It took us 18 months to completely renovate the barn into the accommodation that we are now proud to provide.

This is the very northern edge of the Massif Central region, where it meets the flat plains of central France that lie to the north. The landscape here in the southern Indre is very much like that found in the Dordogne or Correze departments further south, with forested hills, small fields and traditional farmhouses. Because the roads are quiet and the region is not part of the major tourist destinations in France it is also an excellent destination for cycling or hiking.

What makes this property unique

The Barn at Vijon is situated right in the heart of the tranquil French countryside. At the boarder of the Indre, Creuse and Allier departments you are ideally located to visit the many castles, churches, museums, galleries, parks and gardens in the area. With its quiet country lanes the area is very popular with cyclists and for walkers there are many signposted routes and walks to be had around and near Vijon.
You too can enjoy “The Good Life” in our converted barn where an oasis of calm awaits. We are on hand to do all we can to ensure you experience a relaxing, rewarding and enjoyable holiday in the heart of rural France.
