Very good

Plenty of room in this very nice cottage. A few minor issues quickly sorted out by the owner. Everything supplied. The property was clean and in good order. Very close to Slapton Sands beach. Nice pub and community shop in the nearby village of Slapton. Only downside is the property is the location, requires access via narrow lanes, if you are not put off by this, I would recommend a stay here.
Disappointing cleanliness and other issues with the property.
From the outside this looks like an idyllic cottage, and on the plus side there is plenty of room for all the guests and the beds were fairly comfortable. However, the list of issues we had is extremely long and we were less than impressed with how the manager spoke to us.
On arrival one guest found that she got locked in the bathroom and then found a dirty toenail, swab with blood on and other rubbish under her bed, a wet towel under her bed and someone’s dirty socks on her bed. The manager Richard’s response to this was “Well the last family did leave it in a terrible mess”. Insinuating that it wasn’t cleaned properly because of this.
Richard came to fix the lock but was abrupt and said “Why don’t you give me a list of everything you aren’t happy with?” When we complained about the cleanliness his answer was “This is the countryside, there will be a spider every 8 minutes”. On presentation of the bedroom rubbish that were found, he agreed this was poor and said that the cleaners could come back however it was too late in the day for this.
He shhh’d one of us as we were explaining things that were wrong with the property and was very curt. The property is extremely dated including most amenities. Throughout our stay we found various things broken, dangerous or dirty. Below is a short list of examples:
Broken handles making knives dangerous in kitchen.
Chunks of plaster out of the walls.
Thick black mould growing on shower screen.
Cracked tiles throughout.
Old food left in bed bin and bottom of freezer was filthy, with frozen chips left in.
Old food and dirt such as crisps, under sofa cushions.
Some sheets e.g undersheet on children bedding was threadbear.
Stained carpets.
Broken blind.
Pots, pans not cleaned.
Water leaking from upstairs shower into kitchen.
Broken plug sockets.
Bad smell in fridge.
Pill found on kitchen floor that children could have eaten.
Terrible WIFI.
Rat heard and seen directly outside property door in flower bed.
Doors that weren’t shut properly.
Toilets that are hard to flush.
Washing line situated next to stinking septic tank.
The toilet seat in the family room broke within ten minutes of us arriving. Richard glued it back together and it broke again a day later, this time coming completely off. He fixed this again and said “a new unit is on its way”.

Good cottage for a family holiday
We enjoyed our family holiday at Cherry Cottage. The cottage was certainly well equipped for a family holiday, including young children. We have only rated the cottage as 3 star as some of the facilities are ready for a 'redo'

About the host
Hosted by Richard Smith
We are Richard & Diane Smith I live in England with my wife, our children having now grown up. My wife and I spend most of our spare time & holidays at Buckland, where we enjoy developing the house to improve the holidaying experience for our guests. The large gardens are a joy to work in with some unusual plants due to the very warm summers with mild winters. We have really fallen in love with the South Hams
Why they chose this property
Having holidayed here as a teenager, learning to sail and canoe on the river Dart my wife and I wanted to have a holiday base in the area for our young family. We looked to create a family friendly holiday home and first bought property at Buckland in 1988. In 2001 we demolished some farm barns and built the new cottage -Cherry, reclaiming much of the original barn materials. The areas beauty and opportunities for youngsters to enjoy water sports together with the pace of life in the South Hams convinced us this was the right place. It is a joy working to improve the grounds and develop the large gardens. Having plenty of experience in holidaying with young children and looking after guests we can recommend the area for family holidays.
What makes this property unique
If you are looking for a friendly holiday cottage to enjoy with your family in a quite rural environment yet close to the coast & Dartmoor then Cherry cottage is a good base for you. With the many visitor attractions close by suitable for young and old and a huge variety of things to do this area suits all ages.
