About this property

Secluded Luxury House. Private Pool. Between Cognac, Angouleme, Royan. Bordeaux.

A centre for everywhere in the middle of nowhere!
Hidden between the mill stream and the forest, Chez Meunier offers complete privacy and peace. While you enjoy the sun-trap private pool you will hear nothing but the birds in the surrounding woods . Also brilliant for star-gazing after a hard day doing nothing! The Charente skies are some of the least light polluted in the world.
The local countryside presents a mosaic of colour, with sunflowers, maize and wheat and the occasional family group of cattle grazing happily in the fields. But the area is best known for its vineyards, supplying grapes for Cognac and our local delicacy Pineau.
The house: The low, unassuming façade belies the huge amount of space contained within. The entrance, beside the 10 x 5 metre pool, leads into a large bright hallway and the ground floor. Overlooking the pool is the bright, airy and fully equipped kitchen/diner. The giant oak table will seat 10 with room to spare and the kitchen has all the appliances and utensils you will want. Across the hall is the sitting room which again looks out onto the pool and beyond into the woods. With duel aspect windows this room is delightfully bright and restful, being comfortably furnished with armchairs and settees, TV and DVD and a supply of books and games. At the end of the hall is a toilet with hand basin. Beside this cloakroom is a large area for any outdoor wear, boots and coats, ideal for hikers and explorers!
The wrought iron staircase leads up to a large hall and into the stunning Master Bedroom, which has a super king-size sleigh bed under a beautiful vaulted ceiling showing all the ancient oak beams. There is a full-sized wardrobe and large chest of drawers, plenty of space to store all your bits and pieces. The large en-suite wet room is fully tiled and fitted with a skylight to let in the sunshine. This bedroom has views to the east across the mill stream, Le Ne, and the rising sun.
Double bedroom and Twin bedroom: On this floor there are a further two bedrooms, a double and a twin. Both have ample storage and idyllic views over the forest. These 2 rooms are directly opposite the large family bathroom featuring a bath as well as shower for those folk who enjoy a soak!. Both the bathrooms are newly fitted with the best quality and style. Fully tiled with beautiful vanity units to contain all your bathing paraphernalia. All towels are supplied and renewed each week.
Outside, the 10 x 5 metre pool is surrounded by a European Standard Security barrier which has child-proof locks. The outside dining area has large table on the paved patio under a canopy and is next to the stone barbecue. The view from here is just the fields and forest. Next to the pool area and patio, the small gravelled garden has figs and walnuts aplenty in season and also the pigeonnier is here, which houses all the bikes for your use.
The Charente region has many attractive towns and villages and a sightseeing holiday could include: Cognac and a visit to one of its world famous Brandy Houses – watch the process and sample the product! Angouleme, with its beautiful Cathedral in the heart of the Old City, where a wander through the maze of narrow streets offers a delightful range of pavement bars and gourmet restaurants to suit everyone. Angouleme is also the capital of the cartoon industry and a visit to the paper making museum on the banks of the beautiful Charente is a must. The famous and fascinating Chapelle des Templiers at Cressac – just a healthy bike ride away from the house. Soak up the aura of its frescoes before pedaling on to Blanzac for a coffee. Jarnac, which straddles the lovely Charente. Here you can enjoy a boat trip on the river. For the more adventurous: Golf enthusiasts can play the championship course at Cognac, beautifully designed around a Chateau and its vineyard. There is also an 18 hole course in Angouleme and a pleasant 9 hole course at nearby Pillac. The Charente river offers numerous opportunities to hire canoes and kayaks, for an hour or for a day. Aubeterre sur Dronne, with its underground cathedral and voted one of the most beautiful villages in France, has a range of options and is 25 minutes away. For the ramblers and cyclists, the quiet lanes and rolling hills provide a perfect setting. There are waymarked paths and bridleways, or you can explore the valleys of the Ne and the Boeme yourselves with local maps. Other activities and experiences: In Angouleme, the annual Cartoon Strip Festival ( Bande Desinee ) in February and the Rampart Rally ( vintage cars from all over Europe racing round the City streets ) in September. In Cognac, the annual Blues and Jazz Festival in early July attracts internationally renowned artists every year. In Barbezieux, the Music Week early July, where local and regional musicians play a variety of styles in the bars and around the streets. There are also organised live concerts and exhibitions throughout the summer. Throughout the region, almost every village offers weekly markets, fares and occasional exhibitions. In the summer, the “Farmers Markets” are a fantastic way to sample local produce in the villages, where you usually have the chance to buy the meat, cook it there and then on the BBQ and wash it down with some local wine!

Great gite in lovely rural location

As others have said this is a great gite in a peaceful rural location. The hosts are lovely and the house and pool too. There are day trips you can do exploring the nearby towns, kayaking and visiting the brandy houses if you can tear yourselves away from the pool!

4th year here - and we’ve booked for 2019!

A warm welcome from Stevie and Harry as always; this is our fourth stay and we’ve booked for summer 2019. We love it for the peace and tranquility, the privacy, the house, pool and the fabulous countryside. Shops are a short drive away, as are picturesque villages and towns, kayaking, beautiful chatedrals and plenty of places to eat, drink and be merry! Looking forward to next summer already.

Just lovely!

We had a perfect week in a beautifully maintained and decorated house. The pool was very clean and an added luxury for us. Our hosts Steve and Harry respected our privacy but were always on hand for any local knowledge and a glass of wine or 2!! The location was idyllic and the history of the place just added to its charm. We wish we could have it as our second home! We will be back!!

Perfect Spot

We had a fantastic stay, we highly recommend this property for a peaceful and tranquil stay. Steve and Harry are the perfect hosts. The Gite is very private and the outdoor area is just perfect. Our teenagers loved the pool and the table tennis table. The Gite is in a secluded wooded area but there are many amenities just a short drive away. This is definitely a prime spot to get away from it all and we could have happily stayed for longer. The added bonus being the fabulous Rascal (dog) and his visits to the door for treats.

Chez Meunier

From the moment we arrived we knew we had made the right decision to book Chez Meunier...we had the warmest of welcomes from Harry and Steve and the house could not have been better!...Plenty of room for a family with 5 children and the swimming pool is fantastic , right by the house, surrounded by trees and very private... Whoever stays here are sure to have a very relaxing break Steve and Harry gave excellent customer service, they had prepared the property for our arrival to an excellent standard, their description of property was spot on and I would not hesitate to recommend Chez Meunier to anyone...

Absoute bliss... again!

Our second stay in this beautiful house in an idyllic setting - perfect weather for pool days and quiet evenings outside, we had a blissful week. The house is stocked with everything you need, and Steve and Harry are the perfect hosts - as friendly as you want them to be, full of information about the local area and happy to share a bottle of wine if you fancy it! We had a day trip to Aubeterre sur dronne which is a beautiful town and well worth a look, other than that it was a daily trip out for chocolatines, croissants and bread (all available within a five minute drive) and hours and hours spent playing in the pool. If you want some peace, relaxation and family time away from the rest of the world this is the holiday for you.

Chez Meunier = Chez Marvellous

I have lost count of how many times we’ve visited this beautiful place but we return each year and have a fabulous family holiday. I’ve left quite a few reviews and have always rated the property at 5 stars. There’s not much else I can add the all my previous reviews except to say that having spent a week here at half term we are returning for a week in August. Twice in one year, I can’t believe our luck. Thank you Steve and Harry for yet another great stay, looking forward to seeing you again in August. The Trehys

Peaceful stay in the French countryside

We had a lovely week, Stephanie and Harry are very thoughtful hosts. The house has everything you could need and more, from a well-equipped kitchen to lots of games like fuseball and mini billiards table. The pool is a good size, comfortable lounge chairs, both sun and shade options around the pool. Very convenient location for grocery shopping, bakeries. Several nice towns to visit within 30-45 mins. Lots to explore 1 hour plus away. Stephanie and Harry left us to enjoy our stay, only stopping by to offer additional pool stuff they thought we might enjoy (very kind!) or wave hello in the evenings. I would definitely recommend this property and would like to return one day.

Stunning property, stunning location

We stayed here for a week and were blown away with the property and how hospitable the owners were. The location and property itself were simply outstanding and were made to feel at home immediately by the owners. We have a 2 year old and were delighted with how child friendly the property is, stair gates/high chair/childs bed etc. The pool area was fantastic and there was never any concern that our child could get anywhere near the pool without our supervison. The property was immaculate on entry and there is nothing that we can think of that would have enhanced it any. This is the perfect location and property for a nice, relaxing break away and we enjoyed trips out to the local town of Angouleme and Bergerac. Would absolutely recommend this place to friends and family and will definitely be returning

A Most Excellent Holiday

We enjoyed three glorious weeks at the gite in Pereuil and can recommend it highly. The property is beautifully fitted out with all the appliances and utensils one needs during a self-catering holiday. The house is nicely decorated with a country French theme and is particularly comfortable in both the ground level and the first floor sleeping areas. The swimming pool is immaculate and maintained perfectly, making a dip very attractive in both day & evening. And finally, the owners. None are better! They take exceptional attention to making their guests feel welcome & comfortable whilst also being very respectful of privacy. They never intrude and are always available if a guest needs a question answered, etc. All in all, it was a perfect way to enjoy private country time in a beautiful part of France and we will most certainly attempt another visit in the near future.

Outstanding.

This is actually a rather overdue review. So rather than a review look at it as anticipation of our return to an outstanding holiday home this year. Alison, the boys and I can't wait to come back and enjoy the well equipped, beautifully finished, peaceful, secluded house that Steve and Harry have obviously toiled over. Just check out "That Book" on the coffee table. The pool was the runaway star of the show for us last year along side the BBQ and Gazebo. Whilst we planned to explore the area more fully we found everything so relaxing that it was mostly excursions for supplies that took place! Steve and Harry were very respectful of our privacy but also only too pleased to offer help or advice about the area, places to visit, the fascinating history of the building, reccommend or share a glass of wine, and generally do everything they could to make our stay as comfortable as possible. We return again this August and can't wait. I am sure this year we'll be able to escape and explore they region more fully as it is lovely...but maybe not.

A great place to unwind and chill out!!

After tiring of searching through pages of French holiday rentals we finally chose Chez Meunier for a 2 week break in July / Aug 2013, largely on the strength of the positive reviews it had received..... We were not disappointed! The property itself is secluded and features a fantastic truly private pool (along with various inflatables that our youngest, and I suspect, our teenagers enjoyed). The building, with an interesting history, has been sympathetically restored and decorated to a high standard throughout. It comes with every tool and appliance you need to make it a true home from home, including the essential wifi, it even has a good quality table tennis table. The region has many interesting places to visit and is not too touristy which is nice as we wanted the French experience, we kept the driving down to places that we could reach within an hour max and had plenty to see and do. We particularly enjoyed Aubeterre-sur-Dronne with its picture postcard appearance and underground church that took 100 years to carve from the solid rock. The owners Stevie and Harry are great, being on hand if you need them but never intrusive. Good luck to them for the future!! We will definitely return (assuming it’s not fully booked!!). Exactly as in the pics

We had a lovely 9 night stay at the end of summer. Stevie and Harry are incredibly welcoming and the house is amazingly well equipped (we joked about a cherry pitter and 10 mins later one arrived!) so that if you want to whip up a 3 course dinner or simply grill on the barbecue, then you can. Unusually this property has quite a lot of the basics - olive oil, washing up liquid, washing powder, dishwasher tablets, spare bin liners etc. Being used to rentals that DON'T provide much we took our own, but if you happen to be flying in rather than driving then this might be a godsend on the first night. What else to add, the house is comfortable and immaculately maintained, the pool is beautifully clean and the surrounding woods are very quiet, with only the odd bird call to disturb. Our children didn't really stray from the pool when the weather was super-hot and you could easily spend your entire break chilling here with only the occasional trip for provisions. The surrounding area is covered in sunflower fields or vineyards. The local speciality being a fortified wine, known as pineau, and cognac. Everywhere seems to make and sell cognac! There's a really useful folder with information on sightseeing, places to visit and also tips from previous guests on restaurants. There's a lot to do should you wish to. Stevie and Harry are obviously on hand if you need, but we rarely saw them. I'd definitely recommend Les Meuniers - I've already given away the business cards we brought back! It's a lovely place to stay

Sehr ruhig

Beautiful house and idyllic location

Gorgeous accommodation with such character and charm. The pool is huge and surrounded by a fence and a lockable gate for peace of mind. A fabulous terrace with covered dining area with a great BBQ. The kitchen is the best equipped kitchen we have encountered. The master bedroom is spectacular and the wet room is perfect. The whole house remained cool despite the high temperatures. The owners who live behind the property are so discrete. They are also very friendly and helpful and we really enjoyed talking with them. Lovely secluded house situated in gorgeous French countryside

The owners, Stevie and Harry, are wonderfully kind, welcoming and helpful hosts, who went above and beyond for us. A massive thank you! The house has a really welcoming feel and is both spacious and very well appointed. The kitchen is large and well equipped, with a wonderfully big kitchen table for everyone to sit around. The sitting room is spacious and has ample seating. The master bedroom is gorgeous and from the unusual ceiling hangs a beautiful chandelier. The en suite shower room was perfect. The other two bedrooms are both spacious and share a very well appointed family bathroom. The swimming pool is lovely and a perfect size. We had a wonderful week's stay and with lots of evening BBQ's, lazing on the loungers around the pool or sitting in the shade at the table under the pergola. Thank you so much to you both for a lovely and much needed holiday!

Beautiful Gite & Lovely owners

The property itself is gorgeous, very well equipped & has everything you need. We had wine & flowers left on the table for when we arrived. The master bedroom is amazing, the area is very quiet & peaceful we even saw some deer. The pool had some inflatables in there when we arrived our grandson loved it although the water was quite cold. All in all excellent would definitely like to go back soon. Thank you Stevie & Harry.

A wonderful place to relax!

The house is just gorgeous. Beautifully kept with everything you need - a real 'home away from home'. The kitchen is well stocked and we were greeted with a bottle of wine and some flowers which was a lovely touch. The pool was fantastic - a good size and surrounded by loungers. We have a 3 year old so the fence ensured he was safe and we could relax knowing he couldn't access the pool unless we were there. Although the property is secluded, there are great shops, restaurants and boulangeries a short drive away and it's a great base for day trips - our favourites were Cognac and St Emilion - both fabulous places. Stevie was a great host - friendly and helpful. A wonderful holiday.

Harry and I moved to the delightful Charente in 2007 from our home of 25 years near Epping Forest. We have spent the time renovating our mill house and the adjoining miller's house, now our rental property. The work has been challenging to say the least, partly because of the age of the buildings and their historical importance. I am a designer and H a builder, so knowing what to do was never the problem. Just getting it done!
But we are finished now and very content with the results. As are our guests, which gives us a huge sense of satisfaction.

Why they chose this property

The Mill took our hearts as soon as we saw it. And although we went on to view a dozen or so others all around SW France this one was always beckoning. I think it was the situation, hidden in the woods but with such a sunny atmosphere that captivated us. And the structure itself was perfect for our needs.

What makes this property unique

I have always loved photography and wildlife. So to live amongst the assortment of beautiful wildflowers and see the deer and occasional red squirrel is a real treat. It is so very peaceful even the birdsong sounds loud.
