About this property

Enjoy Beautiful Squam Lake From This Charming Cabin , Setting For On Golden Pond

Enjoy the most picturesque views imaginable of the lake and White Mountains from this wonderful cabin on Squam. Built in 1949 and beautifully maintained and updated by the family, the home is perched atop a birch knoll located directly on the water. Characteristic of the rustic charm and privacy that typifies Squam lake homes, this is an idyllic location to watch the occasional lake activity, view wildlife, listen to the native loons and take full advantage of a waterfront home. Two bedrooms provide sleeping potential for up to six, while two sleeper sofas offer additional overflow potential. Both bedrooms offer full lake views. There are one and 3/4 baths that makes it comfortable for the whole family or a group. The home faces North East for stunning sunrises and good all-day sun, especially down on the beach and dock. The spacious screened porch offers a welcome setting for summer dining as well as wide vistas of the lake and its framing mountain ranges. The decor is original unfinished pine paneling throughout, and the living room is centered around a large, stone fireplace. The kitchen is outfitted with current stainless appliances and includes a pass through window into the screened porch. Down the steps from the cabin is a private waterfront that nestles in a small cove. Here one can enjoy a sandy beach, dock, swimming raft, and boathouse (as well as separate road access for boat landing). Included are two kayaks, a canoe, rowboat and all paddles and safety equipment. All of this creates a ideal setting for swimming, sunning, fishing, boating or simply watching the brilliant sunsets that entertain throughout the season. This home provides a true escape from it all, and those unfamiliar with Squam Lake will quickly come to appreciate its slow pace and unspoiled natural beauty found only two hours from Boston.

Gorgeous location on a beautiful lake

The camp was old school Squam with everything updated - all kitchen supplies, comfortable beds - where we appreciated it. Location on the lake is incredible, with views of 4000+ footers to the northeast. Screened-in porch offers a great hang out spot when not by the water. Bonus: fantastic gravel bike riding on empty roads in Sandwich and Tamworth.

Squam Lake Paradise

5 stars is an understatement for how perfect this cabin and location is on Squam Lake. The cabin and its perfect location on the lake is exactly what makes this place so special and why families like mine try to keep coming back each summer. The screened in porch is such a magical area of the cabin to hang out with an unreal view of the lake. The private beach and the dock and all the kayak’s; canoe; and paddle board were just perfect for our active family that wanted to make different adventures on the lake each day. Can’t say enough good things about this amazing place.

Peace and Tradition

We were looking for the simple, traditional Squam cabin and this is everything we expected. Although rustic it had all the modern updates. Cleaning was spotless. The location is excellent for walking, drifting, listening to loons, doing nothing. I hesitate to express how wonderful our stay was because we don't want the cabin to get too popular! The owners are the best hosts.

Fantastic Property!

My family has been coming to Squam lake for 34 years, this is the best week we’ve ever had. View is something dreams are made of and the sandy beach was perfect for my toddler. We would come back in a heart beat, and would send our other family members as well!

A hidden gem

We have been spending our summer vacation on Squam for seven years. Our long time rental sold, so we were forced to find a new spot. This is it. Breathtaking view. Our kids are now teenagers. The water is deep for swimming and jumping off the floating raft. They were never bored. The kitchen is very narrow, but we quickly got used to it. We hope to be lucky enough to return.

Sweet Cabin on the Lake

We had a wonderful week in this cabin in the woods. It was the perfect size for us, and having a large screened in porch was a plus. We spent much of our time either by or on the lake, as we are avid kayakers. The kitchen (while small) was stocked with everything we could ask for, which led to us cooking many delicious dinners that we enjoyed on the porch. I cannot rave enough about the lake, the quiet and the utter sense of contentment we felt during our stay. Not only is the cabin charming but it is located near a number of beautiful towns, each which had several good options for dining and shopping. Be sure to visit Osteria Poggia if you like Italian food, their pasta, desserts and apertifs are housemade (I felt like I was in Tuscany again). If you are a Quilter then Keepsake Quilting will keep you busy on a rainy day. And don’t miss lunch at Castle in the Clouds or the ice cream at Sandwich Creamery. Enjoy your stay at Birch Knoll!

Surpassed expectations - View and Cottage Amenities perfect in every way

Both the cottage and the views were exceptional. Gordon (the owner) provided any information I needed about the cottage in advance and, as he assured me, the cottage would have everything I needed. The kitchen has a great working kitchen stocked with quality pots and pans and every thing else needed for family dinners. There is a real sense of a family home being shared and everything about my stay was conducive to a healthy, relaxed stay that included plenty of time on the lake, swimming, reading and hanging out. Everyone's favorite place was the porch. The morning sunrises were also a highlight. I hope to come back in the future.

Cozy and charming

First off, I don't think there is a bad spot on Squam Lake, this property didn't disappoint. My family of five got the privilege of staying here for the July 4th holiday week and we had an absolute blast! The cabin is cozy but well equipped with all the creature comforts including a washer/dryer and fans for every bedroom. Gordon is absolutely great to work with and will respond to your inquiries within a couple of hours while you are there. Meredith and Center Harbor are a few short miles away if you're like me and need to read the newspaper everyday and get your wife a coffee from Dunkin Donuts. Center Harbor put on a great 4th fireworks show and there were several to choose from. The Red Hill trailhead is less than 2 miles from the cabin and there are a couple of walking paths less than a mile away. Gordon shares all the amenities that the cabin has, we used the 2 person kayak and some of the flotation toys. To us the highlight of the cabin, and where we spent most of our time, was on the screened porch which has a pass-through from the galley kitchen. The dining room table is a great place to play board games, read, or put a puzzle together. There is great swimming here also with a nice sandy beach and a floating dock, the cove was quite busy our week so we did have to deal with constant waves coming in. Having grown up coming to Squam every week in a family vacation home that we no longer have, Birch Knoll provided all the things that makes Squam my favorite place on Earth.

Experience a rustic knotty pine lake cabin with all the convenances of home.

Julie and I had a great time. What an incredible treasure. I find myself trying not to brag on it too much for fear that it someday will be completely unavailable. I slept on the screen porch listening to the Loons and the gentle sound of waves lapping the shore. The fireplace log holders are owls and when the flames get going the owls eyes light up! We were delighted to find a camp with old school charm but all the modern convenances YFI,washer dryer, dishwasher etc. The kitchen had everything one could possibly want right down to the lobster eating tools. We got them steamed at Hannafords in Meredith just a few miles away and brought them home for a feast on the most amazing porch overlooking the lake. The walk down to the beach is a bit hilly but ample hand holds and terraced walkway makes it doable I think for most folks. The beach is sandy and had no muck like we have dealt with in the past. The dock is solid and nice and wide, no acrobatics needed to walk down it. This place has no sheet rock, all wood interior. This is also a very quiet location and we had days that maybe two cars came bye. If I had anything negative to say it would be the chopped up cabin layout probably brought about by expansion over the years. For us this just added to the charm! Sliding pocket windows were very cool and the pass though from the kitchen to the porch was perfect. We did a day trip to the Flume. So much is within reach within an hour but we never wanted to leave! Thanks so much for the opportunity to experience Birch Knoll. V/r Brad Julie Lunt & Julie Lunt (Southeast Georgia)

Just what we needed!

We cannot say enough about how responsive and attentive Gordon was to work with. We felt that he wanted to ensure we had a great experience, and offered his time freely to talk directly with him if needed. The welcome basket was such a thoughtful gesture. We had a fabulous time at the cabin and didn't want to leave. It was relaxing and peaceful, but kept us entertained as well. We enjoyed the beautiful private beach, the friendly sunfish, exploring in the kayaks, and family dinners on the porch. The galley kitchen is narrow, but fully equipped with a large stove, dishwasher, microwave, and washer/dryer. There is a pass through window onto the porch allowing us to have lots of fun taking orders and serving our family at "Cafe Birch Knoll". Two full bathrooms were a plus. The location is great as it affords privacy, but its also just a short drive to Center Harbor to stop at Pats Pizza, and another 15 mins to Meredith for shopping and groceries. We hiked Red Hill and went to Squam Lake science center which were also within 20 mins of the property. We truly appreciated the opportunity to rent this amazing property and hope to return again.

Wow! Pristine cabin, tucked away on a ideal location with dock and beach on beautiful Squam Lake!

I was so impressed with this lovely family cabin on Squam. From the minute we arrived the entire family was happy- as soon as my 5 year old who was free to safely swim and play on the sandy beach and shallow water right by the dock got down to the water she told me "this is the best vacation ever! Let's move here!" - and my very happy husband went right to catching fish after fish. He is an avid fisherman and enjoyed the lake and convenience of the dock throughout the trip! We rented a pontoon and took both our 5 and 2 year old out most days so that we actually spent time outdoors as a family swimming, boating, picnicking, and fishing, instead of watching TV or being glued to Ipads, phones, etc. Gordon the owner was so helpful and professional- and the thoughtful and much appreciated welcome basket we received upon check in helped to further make the stay that more memorable. The cabin is immaculately clean and well stocked. There is much to do in the area, great restaurants, and everyone we encountered was so friendly. We hope to come back next year, as this was one of our favorite vacations (and we have done many rentals)- you can tell this is a family cabin where many good memories were made, and I'm appreciative to have been able to share in this, and to say my family made some of those happy memories!

Perfect family vacation home.

This property is perfectly located on a cove with spectacular views of the lake with mountains in the background. No need to leave the property because everything you need is there. The cottage has lots of rustic character and it feels like a family has enjoyed it for generations. The owners were very helpful and made sure everything was perfect for our arrival. There was even a welcome package waiting for us. We enjoyed long lazy days swimming, fishing and boating on the lake. It was cool enough on a few nights to have a fire in the large stone fireplace. We hated to leave and wished we booked it for two weeks instead of one. This is a place you want to return to every year. We are already planning on next trip to Birch Knoll. I think Birch Knoll will be one of our kid's favorite childhood memories.

Serenity and scenic splendor at Squam Lake

A charming rustic cabin within close proximity to the unique islands in the heart of Squam Lake. Ideal location for those who enjoy touring Squam via kayak or canoe. Viewed and heard the native wildlife during our many journeys out on the water. Only time we ventured away from the cabin was to enjoy a good breakfast at The Village Kitchen in Moultonboro or dinner at a fine restaurant in Meredith. Otherwise Birch Knoll would provide all we would need for a memorable vacation.

Amazing veiws of Squam Lake.Peaceful setting with great location for all lake activities on property

We had a great time at this lovely cabin with AMAZING views of Squam Lake. The property was clean and very comfortable. Location is ideal for all lake activities right on the property, we did not drive anywhere. Everyone loved it and we can not wait to return next year! Owner is very responsive and was very helpful through the whole process. I highly recommend this property, you can not beat the location and views from this amazing cabin! It is definitely a place that you want to return to over and over again. We enjoyed fishing, swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking and relaxing right from the property. Can not wait to return! The pictures do not give it justice - It is truly an amazing place.

This summer home has been in our family for over 65 years. It is a cherished place of escape and recreation and has now hosted four generations. While my siblings and I grew up in New England, we are now scattered across the country and rent the home during the times our families and kids cannot enjoy it.
