Beautiful location

The lodge was quiet, and the fact that it was a 25-30 min (albeit hilly) walk into Boothbay was a big plus! Saved time looking for parking there and $$.

Lovely cabin in pretty setting

Frederick’s cottage exceeded our expectations! It’s immaculate & adorable, nestled among fragrant spruce trees with a refreshing salty breeze wafting along the porch. We were impressed with the thoughtful design elements: porcelain sinks with modern spigots that flow sideways to save space; wardrobes in each bedroom to hold shoes and clothes. Woodsy cabins can feel dark but this home has plenty of lighting and large windows with sun streaming in when you open the curtains. A private neighborhood beach is a short walk away. This was our 11th trip to BBH and we know the area well. The location was perfect for our family: husband and me, plus two of our daughters (23 & 18). Two more people could’ve easily fit. The bedding is really nice - I took pictures of the cute duvet covers so I can find something similar for our home. Frederick is helpful and easy to work with. Parking is next to the cottage and the property is accessible for all ages/abilities. The bedrooms offer plenty of privacy and we slept better than ever. There are two bathrooms and a roomy rainforest shower with plenty of hot water, water pressure, and a washer & dryer. I’m an experienced chef and there’s no shortage of cookware and utensils. Everything you’ll need is provided, including a welcome bag and even Meyers hand soaps. We have no complaints or critiques and would love to stay in the Fairbanks cabin again. It’s a perfect blend of classic Maine vibe with modern comforts and amenities. 10/10!

Great cabin that’s exactly as you would expect for Maine. Front porch coffee every morning. Kids riding their bikes around the neighborhood. Updated kitchen and bathrooms. Would recommend to anyone. Thanks Frederick.

Great week in Maine

My wife and I had a nice stay at The Fairbanks cabin. It is located in a nice community. The neighbors were all really friendly, and the roads were great for morning and evening walks. There is a nice beach just down the road - just for people, no dogs allowed. As it is located just outside of town, it is very easy getting into Boothbay Harbor.

Great getaway location

Had a wonderful stay as a family of 3 (+ 3 for part of out stay). Serene location and great room perfect for gathering and dining together. Kitchen was perfect for breakfasts and even a lobster dinner. Rooms are small, but very comfortable. Suggest packing a duffle as there’s nowhere to easily layout a suitcase.

A relaxing, quaint place to stay

The cabin is in a lovely, quiet area with other similar log cabins nearby (it must have been a family camp at some point) with beautiful views of the water and a short drive to town. The cabin itself is simple and clean, exactly as pictured in the photos. If you're looking for a relaxed getaway with the perfect porch to sip your morning coffee, this is it.

Peaceful, clean home with water views close to Boothbay

Close to Boothbay, but tucked away in its own peaceful world. House was very clean. It is a beautiful classic Maine home that keeps the rustic feel, and is also updated where you want it to be (kitchen, bathrooms). Kitchen was well-stocked, dining room table was perfect for a group, deck is great (even when it rained). Frederick was so easy to work with, and a wonderful host. It is clear that a lot of thoughtful care goes into the property, and we had a wonderful stay!

Quintessential Coastal Maine Experience for Our Adult Family

This log lodge was just what we were looking for: rustic yet comfortable. Loved all the welcoming touches and interesting details of the property-- Adirondack furniture, plantings in the yard, etc. We especially loved the large comfortable family room.and adjacent porch. Nice proximity to all that downtown has to offer, yet far enough from that bustle to enjoy the quiet one expects when visiting Maine.

Charming Cabin with Lake view

Fairbanks Lodge was a wonderful spot to return to after each day of our adventures in Maine. The porch overlooking the lake was perfect for relaxing after hiking and sightseeing. The location in Sprucewold just up the hill from Booth Bay Harbor, was quiet and serene, but just minutes away from shops and restaurants. Small personal touches like fluffy towels and a goody bag with treats made us feel welcome as soon as we walked in the door. The owner was immediately responsive to some questions that we had upon arrival. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Rustic and Quaint

Three generations of my family spent a week at the Fairbanks and we had a pretty good time. Here are the pros and cons: Pros: 1. Absolutely fantastic large front porch. 2. Incredible shower. 3. Large inviting great room for time together. 4. Well maintained and very clean. 5. VERY comfortable mattresses. Cons: 1. Small wardrobes in the bedrooms might fit the clothes of one person in each room, so be prepared to live out of a suitcase for a week. 2. Bedrooms are very small and rustic. Beds are against the walls (which the pics show), there are no reading lights, and no bedside tables, so bring a light to clamp onto your book. 3. Strangely small sinks in the bathrooms with no place to leave anything, so bring a toiletries bag that you either carry with you to bathroom or hang off a curtain rod. 4. Kitchen is not the selling point, but a pic should be included. Very "rustic." We bought a pot, large serving bowls, a ladle, etc. If you plan to eat out most of the time, you'll be set. The gathering spots in this beautiful rustic cabin balance out these cons, but keep in mind that it is rustic and quaint.

Serene and cozy cabin in the woods

Frederick's cabin was perfect for our week stay and a great place to be in the beauty and quiet of Maine. Close to town and the local lobster pound. We came to bike and kayak and wanted a home that was somewhat isolated to avoid Covid closeness. All was lovely. Will definitely be back for another week or two.

A Quintessentially Maine Vacation

Everything about 'The Fairbanks' is ideal. From its proximity to the harbor town of Boothbay, where you'll find all things commercial, to the utterly beautiful location of the log cabin itself - nestled in the picturesque Sprucewold community. The owner, Frederick Fairbanks, has done an awesome job of adding modern elements and conveniences into all the right places, without stripping any of the authenticity and charm of the beautiful log cabin. He's also thrown a little whimsy into the mix too, which made the cabin so enjoyable for our week in residence. Frederick was wonderful to work with. He clearly takes a lot of pride in sharing his home with his visitors and his priority was our enjoyment of our experience there. Our family includes two teenagers, who found plenty enough to keep busy and occupied during our seven day stay. We also brought along our dog, who found herself in heaven!! We took her on some great walks around Sprucewold and she loved playing in the little park area just across the street from the cabin. Thank you Frederick. We had a wonderful vacation!

Perfect place to spend quality time with family, explore the mid-coast of Maine and the beauty of Boothbay Harbor. The historic log cabin is well maintained and updated with modern amenities. The porch was a nice place to hang out and take in the view of sailboats and lobster boats.

Welcome to The Fairbanks Lodge!

I am delighted to have you stay at my coastal Maine lodge.

Why they chose this property

Built from the very trees that surrounded it almost a century ago, the Fairbanks is nestled in a lush forest area known to the world as Sprucewold. This exquisitely peaceful property with commanding views of the ocean, is located within walking distance of all the excitement downtown Boothbay Harbor has to offer.

When I’m here, I imagine the pioneering spirit of my great, great, great-grandfather, Lyman Nichols Fairbanks, who in 1853 sailed around Cape Horn on an adventurous trip in search of gold during California’s Gold Rush.

His is the picture you’ll observe hanging over the mantel, proudly attired in his bearskin coat which must have kept him quite warm on his long ocean-going journey. You’ll also notice his sea chest in the Great Room that carried his clothing and supplies from New England to the West and back again.

I love watching the boats sail in and out of Linekin Bay while enjoying the shade of the full-length covered porch. Sometimes, on misty summer mornings, I feel as though I can see Lyman’s ship heading out into the Atlantic for parts unknown.

Another thing I like about the lodge is that it has all the creature comforts that you could want, yet maintains the atmosphere of its history.

Much of the furniture in the Great Room is original to the lodge and handmade by Mr. Elmer Bergquist who is mentioned in the book ‘Rusticators in Sprucewold: Preserving the Legacy’.

“Oh, the peace and quiet of this cabin porch as I sit here next to the very branches of fir balsam trees among which many little birds dart. I can look over the tops of the trees below…It nears sunset and the sky and waters beneath are painted in glorious colors, crimson, ceruse, and purple, slowly changing to soft mauve and pink…The night air is cool, I go into the cabin, light the lights and the fire, turn on the radio. The spell is broken. Again I become a part of the world outside with its strife and greed. It is hard to believe that is the same world.”

-Sprucewold guest c1928

What makes this property unique

As of 2016, the lodge has new electrical, plumbing, bathrooms and kitchen. Some of the amenities available include: a 48” smart flatscreen tv with Blu-ray player, internet with Wi-Fi, fully equipped granite counter-topped kitchen with dishwasher and drip coffee maker, washer/dryer and a glass-enclosed shower with rain head. Family games and numerous books are available to pass the time on the occasional coastal-Maine rainy day.

There are many attractions in and around the Boothbay region including small, independently owned shops, restaurants, and ice cream stands. The Boothbay Botanical Gardens and the Railway Museum are close by as well. There are golf courses, boating and swimming locally, clam bakes and the best lobster America has to offer. All the things you need to enjoy a traditional New England summer vacation.
