Amazing!!!
We stayed in cottage #1 for a week and enjoyed every second! The sound of the ocean and palm trees is all you'll hear. It's so incredibly beautiful and relaxing. You're steps from the beach (which we had to ourselves most of the time) and just a couple miles from both Tunnels and Ke'e beach. The cottage itself was well appointed with everything we needed (even an ice maker and a water filter pitcher!) and the finishes are all high end. We were here with our 2 year old daughter and there was plenty of grassy space for her to run around. We enjoyed dinner on the lanai most nights - watching the ocean. Each cottage has it's own BBQ. Other things that are worth mentioning: -This cottage had a ton - A TON - of towels. Beach towels, bath towels, hand towels... There were an abundance and we never ran out like we usually do after a few days at a hotel -There is no need to rent a snorkel or buy beach chairs because there's a stash behind one of the cottages for all to use. I used the same snorkel and fins all week, there was a ball for my 2 year old to play with, and we left behind a bucket and sand toys for the next lucky kiddo. -If staying over a weekend, I recommend heading to Hanalei on Saturday morning for the farmer's market. -Sushigirl, which is a tiny door next to the 'last chance to stop market' Wainiha General Store, is fab. -Susan, the agent for Hale Makai, was incredibly helpful. I'm super type A and was nervous about traveling for the first time with my little one. I probably asked her 200 questions and was very (VERY!) patient with me. Enjoy your stay!!

Big disappointment
When you pay this much per night for a place, it's reasonable to have certain expectations. Such as shampoo. No little bottles of shampoo. No store close by either. So be sure to bring some or you will be washing your hair with bar soap. We lost power the first night we stayed. Since there is no a/c, the room was very warm and no fans blowing so it was fairly miserable. It was also very windy and there is a palm frond that scraped the roof all night. This was not a broken frond, but had been there for a very long time. I have a hard time believing we are the only ones who noticed When I asked if someone could come and fix the problem I was told that everything in Hawaii is slow and no promises. The screen door was off when we got there and we asked to have someone put it on. We were told that it was easy, we could do it ourselves. We paid the $5 for laundry soap (1 load) and then we got the instructions on how/where/when and as directed, we attempted to wash our clothes the evening before we left (you can only do laundry between 4 and 9 pm). We couldn't do laundry because it was occupied for 24 hours by the cleaning crew. We had no way to wash our clothes before our long flight home. Most disappointing to us was the lack of concern over any of our comments and complaints. We can't recommend this place.

Stay was awesome.
We stayed in Hale Makai cottages 30 years ago. I assume the original 4 cottages were destroyed in the 1992 hurricane. We returned to celebrate 30 years together. It was a magical stay and reminisced a lot. Thank you

Fantastic Vacation Cottage in Ha'ena, (near Hanalei)
Our family had a blast and will definitely be back in the future. All of our initial reactions while walking in were pure excitement. We knew we made a great call. Amazing ocean views from inside/deck with vibrant plants and trees in foreground. Woke up to colorful sunrise every morning. Beach access right there. Hibiscus #2 (2 bedroom cottage) was well-equipped with kitchen essentials+, towels, bedding, etc.. Clean. Our interactions with Reservations were responsive and service-oriented. Felt taken care of and confident from booking to departure. We were lucky to meet the owners during our stay. They are very kind and let us use beach/activity gear on hand vs. some items we would normally have to rent. Hammock and lounge chairs in common yet private area (always available while we stayed). We normally stay in Princeville but this has different character that we appreciate (still love P'ville but..). Welcome to the jungle feel to the surrounding area. Awesome. Mahalo for the hospitality.

Perfect retreat in a great location with good standards
Hale Makai Cottages is on the down to earth beautiful north end of Kauai, even beyond cool Napalei, just briefly before the trailhead Kalalau Trail. It is all about location - and it cannot be any better than this. Cottage #2 is between 15 to 30 yards from the water, depending on the tides. You sleep to the sound of the waves and wake up with the sunrise directly into the master bedroom. The furnishing is all modern ratan and there is a full kitchen as well as a recently renovated modern bathroom. We were the only guests in all cottages during our stay and did not see another soul on the premises, which made it even more exclusive (probably thanks to COVID and the landslide limiting access to Hanalei). Definitely a non-touristy choice to pick Hale Makai Cottages about which we are really happy.

Lovely accommodation is a simply beautiful area
We had a really great stay at this property ... very modern and clean with most of the key amenities... beds were very comfortable, bedding and towels was impeccable. Miles of Beach is right outside the door. Accommodation and property is quiet and safe. A couple of small disappointments. Barbecue was old style hibachi and not gas. We had no charcoal so did not use it. Laundry was 5 per load and required communication to access and special detergent. Despite these minor inconveniences I would definitely recommend this property and stay here again .

Unbeatable beachfront with amazing sunrises!
We had the most relaxing stay in lovely cottage #2! Each day we awoke to the most incredible sunrise and fell asleep listening to the waves; and throughout the day we fantasized about returning (including potentially hosting a family reunion by reserving all five cottages). We loved the setting and highly recommend it to others. It's a bit remote (part of its charm) so meal planning and not forgetting anything on the grocery list was helpful. Susan was very responsive to any questions we had.

A taste of old Hawaii
This cottage was the PERFECT "get away" for us. Every morning we had coffee on the deck and watched the sunrise. Then we would go for an early morning snorkel right in front of the house....across a sandy beach. There was a beautiful swimming area protected by a reef which was about 100 yards out. The reef had gorgeous tropical fish and coral, underwater beauty and even a turtle and a Monk Seal.....all too magical. The cottage itself (Hibiscus Cottage) was very private, although there are several other cottages on the property. It was ideally located. We walked to the famed Tunnels Beach just down the beach from us. We were just far enough out of the town of Hanalei that we felt very quiet, private and peaceful, but close enough to go in for dinner if we wished. The cottage itself was simple, clean and elegant (in a country fashion). It was aging, but that actually felt comfortable and homey, and was, for us, more of a positive than a negative. The landscaping is immaculate and tasteful. We were not aware of a manager on the property, but Susan, the owner, was very accessible by email for any questions we had. The gardener and the house keeper were around frequently. If we have an opportunity, we will definitely return to this gem, reminicent of Hawaii 50 years ago.

Idyllic Cottage Vacation
This little cottage is not fancy, but if you are looking for the perfect, relaxing vacation stay, it is hard to beat. It is wonderfully private; only the adjacent cottages are within view, and they are similarly private. The view is of the Pacific and Hanalei Bay, and the cottage is sufficiently elevated that (the few) visitors walking by on the beach have no view of the cottage. The cottage is very nicely furnished in and out, with plenty of towels and nice linens. It is about a 15 minute drive to Hanalei, so you have the best of all worlds - seclusion, yet close enough to one of the best beach towns in the world. An added bonus - the resort next door has a very nice restaurant and coffee shop should you decide not to drive into town. My wife and I came to this property with high expectations, though not really knowing what to expect, and it exceeded our expectations in every measure.

Amazing Vacation! Stunning Accommodations
The Hale Makai Cottages are absolutely not to be missed! They are incredibly well appointed, with not a stone unturned. Beautiful kitchens, clean & fresh interiors that create a warm and relaxing vacation. We came in June and while the weather wasn't what we thought it would be (it was much rainier) we could not have cared less! The views were amazing and the place lended such a great inside/outside feeling that when it was raining it was amazing to hear the noise on the roof and be in such a soothing environment. The owners are absolutely fabulous people; incredibly fun to sit and talk with and are respectful and caring with thier space. What a wonderful space for them to share. I highly recommend staying at the Hale Makai Cotttages; we cannot wait until we're able to return. Best, Cynthia & Jason

Perfection...
We were in town for a wedding and wanted to experience a more authentic Kauai experience than spending the week confined in the St. Regis. The Hale Makai Cottages fit the bill perfectly. The property is steps from the beach (we walked along the beach to Tunnels one morning) and very well kept. The house was exceptionally clean and well stocked with everything you'd need. We ended up cooking dinner all 3 nights, there are some great farmer's markets nearby, and found the kitchen well equipped with all the pots, pans and cutlery required for meal prep. There was even a BBQ right off the back of our unit which we made use of one night! The property is pretty far down the Kuhio Highway (about a 20 minutes drive outside of Hanalei Bay) which means it's paradise for anyone looking for a quiet getaway. We'll definitely be coming back a highly recommend to anyone looking for a similar experience.

Best VRBO Ever!
We've stayed at VRBOs on Oahu, the Big Island and in San Francisco. All were nice BUT this was the BEST in terms of location ... paradise right on the water, good snorkeling ... steps from our cottage and appointments ... simply elegant. Equally important ... there were more than enough towels to keep me happy! The owners were on site when we were there. They were attentive to details, welcoming and extremely gracious. Our liaison, Susan, was always responsive and eager to make the experience as close to perfect as it could be.

My Happy Place
Absolute paradise! This was one of the most relaxing and peaceful places I have every stayed. Steps from the beach. Amazing views. We stayed in the Hibiscus cottage which was very roomy and well appointed. We even had a private chef come in and cook us dinner on our last night. Despite incredible humidity (rainy day) on one of the days, it was still quite enjoyable. Susan was very helpful with all of the arrangements. If you don't want to leave, shop for food before you arrive.

A Gem of Old Hawai'i with Fresh Sparkles
For our first trip to Kaua'i (after repeat visits to O'ahu and Maui over many years), I wanted to choose a hideaway cottage where we could feel the beauty and power of the island's nature with five senses. I was also looking for the comfort of high standard in which we would happily wake up to a fresh morning, enjoy the afternoon or relax and wrap up the evening. If the above resonates well with you, you will probably not regret driving some extra miles after passing Hanalei, crossing a few one-lane bridges, to eventually find your lovely cottage #3 tucked away off the beaten path in Ha'ena. Certainly we did not. We truly enjoyed every moment of our stay there! Here are some of the things we particularly loved about Cottage #3: - Ideally tropical environment surrounded by palm trees, looking out to the ocean (the closest to the beach, of 5 cottages on the property) - Beautiful coral beach steps away and visible from the living room (Almost-private, shared only with just a handful of neighbors) - Snorkeling with turtles and fish right there! - Breakfast on the wooden-deck lanai - Oversized hammock in the garden - Big bath tub (with a bonus ocean view) - Nice balance of luxury and practicality, with well-appointed furniture plus everything you need for a comfortable stay - The owner took good care of us via emails, while respecting our privacy during our entire stay Just a few reminders: - To eat out (except at the next-door Mediterranean), you need to drive 10 to 15 minutes to the next small town of Hanalei. We did not mind driving, and ate at a few fine restaurants there including BarAcuda and Dolphin's. - On the North Shore of Kaua'i, expect some rain. We were very fortunate to have very little during the day, as it rained mostly at night. - If shopping is on your To-Do List during your stay on the island, you may not complete your mission here. For my wife and I, it was Paradise! We absolutely loved Cottage #3 and would recommend to others!

Just Beautiful.
During our last trip to Hawaii, we stayed for a week at a hotel on Maui, shifted over to a house in Princeville on Kauai and then finally, for our last four nights, made our way to the Ginger Cottage at Hale Makai. Had we not come to Hale Makai, with its ground floor entryways that allow you to spill right out onto the earth and its beautiful location sandwiched between jungle and surf, we wouldn't have felt like we truly experienced Hawaii. Yes, it's expensive, but it's the real deal. Where else can you stay, where you can throw a little sweater over your pyjamas and wander barefoot with your coffee down to the beach and watch spear fishermen out wading looking for their morning catch? The weather was beautiful. The sand you could sink your feet deeply into. The water was clear and soothing and turquoise. There was coral you could build temporary inukshuks from that would disappear with the evening tides. Pack groceries, good coffee, good books, some wine - stay there, don't go anywhere else and be prepared to truly unwind.

Quiet Ideal Setting
The Hale Makai Cottages are perfect if you're looking to be a bit out of Hanalei (really only ten minutes or so) and desire the luxury of an oceanfront resort with the added economy and spaciousness of your own kitchen, lanai and living area. We stayed in the Hibiscus Cottage #2 which sits practically on the water with some of the most amazing views the property holds - especially from the master bedroom! As far as things to do, we had some weather so spent quiet time enjoying the sporadic sun bursts between the showers, venturing up and down the beautiful - very long - beach, and swimming. Other than food, the cottage was prepared with a bounty of fresh, soft linen, locally made soaps, and all the things one requires in a well-equipped kitchen. We did venture out for dinner one evening - though hard pressed to leave the perfect setting - and ended up at the Baracuda where, comparatively, the food and service were poor and the view, a parking lot. However, aside from that unfortunate excursion, we loved our stay and absolutely hope to return to Hale Makai. Perhaps next time a bit longer!

Perfect tropical location!
My wife and I stayed 10 days at the Hale Makai Cottages and loved it! We don't like the touristy resorts with all the kids and always look for accommodations away from the crowds. This property was perfect! We stayed 5 nights in cottage #1 and 5 nights in cottage #3. Both were clean with updated furnishings and even a large soaking tub in the bathroom. The grounds are a tropical paradise and just steps from a beautiful beach with great snorkeling. There are 5 cottages on the property, but it never felt crowded. For a rare property like this in one of the most beautiful parts of the world, we thought the pricing was reasonable. We look forward to returning!

Spectacuar!
When I booked the Hale Makai Cottage (#3), I was hoping the view and cottage would be at least half as wonderful as the pictures. When we arrived, I was so amazed...not only was the cottage everything that was posted on this page, the location, grounds, area, and view were more than anyone could want in a vacation rental. We had been to Kauai 6 times, and wanted to be away from "the crowds", so we looked to the North Shore for escape! THIS is the place, look no further. We got our groceries in Kapaa on the way from the airport to the cottage, and never left. We walked on the, almost private, beach at least once a day, snorkled with the seal and giant turtle that we befriended, layed in the hammock and watched the sailboats, and had our wine as we watched the sunsets daily. I can't imagine a better place to be for 2 people who want to be alone. When you come to Hale Maikai you will not want to leave. Many thanks to Klaus and Bam for making this a vacation to remember. We'll see you next summer!!

Beautiful piece of Kauai
We stayed here for 10 days for our 10th wedding anniversary. We were looking for a secluded piece of Kauai, away from tourists, close to the Napali Coast. You will find it all here plus more. Loved the property, the views, location, cottages, beach, snorkeling, seclusion, and on and on!!! Great place for anyone looking to get away from the resort style accommodations. Cottages are fully furnished with all you will need to cook and live comfortably, also the 4G cell phone coverage and wifi was a plus as well. Also can't say enough about the grounds keepers/cleaning crew (Aloha Clean) - very friendly, got some good tips, and they do a fantastic job of cleaning. Can't wait to go back!!!

Hidden Gem
The cottages at Hale Makai are a unique way to spend time on the North Shore. The accommodations provide the conveniences of a house - a kitchen, laundry facilities, etc. but the luxury and ambience of a top-rated hotel room. The beach is just a few steps away and you have the option to just sit and enjoy the view or you can take advantage of fantastic snorkeling right there (no need to fight the crowds at Tunnels Beach, which is around the bend). The five cottages are all close together but the way they are arranged makes each one private. Conversely, if you wish to socialize with guests in the other cottages, you have that option as you do run into others coming and going from the beach. We stayed in Cottage #1 and it's extremely private - the furthest removed from any foot traffic by other guests. The only disadvantage with regards to privacy is if you have night-owls in Cottage #5, you may hear them (there is no air conditioning so everyone's windows are open). That said, we never experienced anything egregious in this regard. Cottage #1 doesn't have quite the views of #2 and #3 but you can see the ocean and the view through the palm trees ls lovely. Cottage #1 has the smallest deck of all but has a nice table with a couple of benches for dining. The lawn area and hammock just beyond the deck felt like our own private yard and we spread out to take advantage of this space and expand our view of the waves. The queen-sized bed was comfortable and the cottage was very clean. We didn't find ourselves wanting something that wasn't there ... perfectly appointed for a week at the beach. We plan to go back, which I believe is the best testament of our experience.
