About this property

A Family destination in the forest with artisan treehouse & vintage airstream

Camp Huckleberry is a vacation getaway offering a unique degree of peace and quiet as well as easy access to the natural splendor of the Mendonoma Coast. Surrounded by fifty-five acres of redwood forest atop of southern Mendocino County’s coastal ridge, it is located in what locals call the Banana Belt, because the Pacific fog often doesn’t crest the ridge while it cools the charming town of Point Arena just two miles down the hill. Three living accommodations, a few sheds and a wood-burning hot tub rest around the perimeter of a meadow large and flat enough for a game of kick ball. It is a complex of buildings intended to host guests ranging from a single individual to a couple of families. Rates vary depending on occupancy and use of facilities. The base rate (5 people or less) is for the cabin only. Until a group is up to 7 people there is an additional fee to access the treehouse and or the airstream trailer.

The main house offers a broad deck space with a propane grill just off the dining room/kitchen and overlooking the meadow, making it easy for kids to play while the parents watch… or vice versa. Inside, there is one bedroom with a queen-sized bed, a bathroom featuring an antique claw-foot tub/shower as well as a large loft with two twin beds and a futon couch that pulls out into a full-sized bed. The open kitchen and dining area tends to be the primary gathering place. The kitchen is well suited and supplied for any culinary adventure, or just a simple meal. A large sink, a gas range and enormous quartz counters offer ample room for shared cooking, prep and clean up. Also, there's plenty of room around the large table. In addition, there is a high ceilinged living room with a small woodstove. For safety and convenience, both the kitchen and the living room can be warmed by wall-mounted and child-friendly space heaters. Other conveniences include Wi-Fi Internet access, a satellite connected television with the ability to play DVD disks and VHS tapes as well as a back up landline telephone should guests encounter difficulty getting cell phone reception. Speakers that connect to smart phones or iPods either directly or by Bluetooth provide music. More old-fashioned forms of entertainment are provided by a collection of books, board games and puzzles. A washer and dryer are located in the nearby pump shed.

A hop, skip and a jump away from the main house’s deck is a wood-burning, cedar hot tub. Firewood is provided and stacked below the deck’s bench seat. An outdoor shower connected to a water heater is next to the deck and positioned within the giant trunk of an old redwood tree.

Nearby, a lovingly refurbished Airstream trailer provides room for extra guests. It has a full-sized bed, a couch, running water and is connected to the property’s electrical and septic systems. A large shed structure has been built to around it that houses a tool shed as well as an additional modern, full bathroom that is tied into the main septic, gas and electrical systems.

A stone’s throw away from the Airstream trailer is a very unique tree house. It sits atop a living, lightening-stunted, second growth redwood tree. A steel staircase wraps around the trunk, providing access. Designed and built by Matt Lowe, a San Francisco-based architect and contractor, this tree house has heating, electricity and a fold out queen-sized bed as well as an attached open deck that allows you to experience the forest canopy.

In the surrounding woods there are several well-marked trails to explore as well as an abundance of wildlife, orchids and mushrooms to spot. This special vacation rental offers a rare opportunity to unwind and experience the North Coast. Run, play, laugh, explore, hike, watch the stars, soak in the hot tub, snooze in the tree house, play Frisbee in the meadow, cook, eat, read, or simply relax and listen to the wind dance with the trees. It is a place of childhood dreams and grown up accommodations.

Unique property!

This is a delightful find! There are many secret trails and surprises to discover, such as a swing hidden in the trees. The tree house is sturdily built and quit delightful to spend a few nights in. The typical futon is comfortable. The kids loved to run up there several times a day to play as well. There is a heater but not a bathroom or running water. The internet does not reach this far from the house and cell is minimal although At&T works a bit better than Verizon. The one bedroom Airstream provided us with an extra refrigerator which was appreciated because the one in the house was small for our group of 9 people. We supplemented with coolers as well. The moldy smell was a bit stiff when we arrived but gradually dissipated as we opened doors and windows whenever possible. The owner will be attempting to remedy the mold situation. The main house was quite comfortable and well appointed as described on VRBO. All beds are comfortable. There are two excellent quality twin beds plus the pull out couch in the loft. Additionally there are other cushions that could be used for younger children to sleep on. The owners were quickly responsive any time we had a question or a need. All-in-all this was a fantastic place for our three generation family for a 9 day stay in late July. The best part was the freedom for the children to roam at will without any worry on the part of the adults. The would tear off across the front meadow and then race around a loop trail through the woods and be back in no time. Such fun! My daughter-in-law mentioned the similar feel to family camp. My rating on cleanliness is a 4 star due to the mold. My rating on check-in is a 4 due to not receiving the access codes until I ask for them on the morning of our departure to drive to Point Arena. Certainly no other complaints!

Great for families

We so enjoyed our stay at Camp Huckleberry. It’s perfect for adults and children and dogs! My 6 yr old granddaughter explored the property collecting as many bugs as she could. We had 7 adults and a child and 2 dogs. The property is great. We enjoyed the hikes, hammocks, the hot tub and outside fire pit. The outside deck is perfect for just enjoying the surroundings. The owners communicated consistently and make sure the property is a good fit. We will have great memories.

Wonderful family reunion for 10 members, 3 generations. Unique setting with activites for all.

All was great except for quality of beds in the cabin loft. Would certainly have been adequate for little ones but not for teenagers and the adults who took turns sleeping in the loft. We enjoyed a delicious dinner at The Chowder House in Point Arena but had trouble finding "fine dining" for our last night together because food options listed were often not open. All in all would highly recommended camp Huckelberry!

Magical property!

I booked this house to celebrate my 40th birthday party with friends. It rained all weekend so we didn't get to take advantage of all of the hiking trails on the property or explore as much as we would have liked. But, the treehouse was a great place to stay- even in the rain. And the main cabin was nice and cozy. I'd love to return to the property on a sunny weekend!

What a nice, quiet getaway!

The place was wonderful - with a treehouse, airstream trailer, and the main home we had plenty of room for our group of nine. Very nice little touches like the hammock in a small grove, a hiking loop, and a really nice out house by the airstream. The kitchen was great for nice group meals as well! Would recommend to anyone! Thank you!

Magical - Enchanting - Discovery

Staying at Camp Huckleberry really was “Northern California’s Best Kept Secret”. Absolutely Wonderful! An adventure filled with enchantment, discovery and comfort. Not only were the facilities welcoming and accommodating the environment was exquisite. This was a holiday vacation that inspired my family to be creative, bond and enjoy each other. We’re looking forward to our next trip.

Outdoor retreat, great for families

We were two families, each with 3 generations..i.e grandparents (65-75 yrs old) to grandkids (3-4yrs old) ..There was a lot for everyone to do and enjoy. This is one of those places you come to spend time at...where it is an attraction enough and you really don't need to travel around too much to sight-see. We only left the house once or twice in 3 days; to visit the Point Arena Lighthouse and the nearby Bryan Reserve. The tree house, playing games in the huge meadow, camp site fire under a starry sky..the calm solitude amongst the redwoods, this place was a treat. We didn't use the trailer much but there was enough space for 9-10 people. Lots of games in the dryer room for kids and adults alike. All in all, a very memorable stay in a unique place.

Wow. This place was so cool!

I've been raving about this place all week, to anyone who would listen. It has a lovely balance between creature comforts, with a really nice and well appointed kitchen and bathroom, and outdoor charm, wilderness, and beauty. And, mix in a little funky with the hot tub and tree house, and you got yourself a memorable place to spend time in Mendocino County. I would absolutely love to go back. In fact, this is the kind of place where you almost want to not give it a good review just so that you can selfishly keep it to yourself. But Deb is just too nice and responsive an owner to do that to. We stayed three nights with six adults and two kids and enjoyed every minute.

The best time!

We just finished our second stay at Camp Huckleberry, and, like before, we loved it. We are a group of adults with Children and dogs, and the accommodations are perfect for communal activities or going off for time alone. We found the facilities are more than adequate, clean, and well organized with forethought. You have the seclusion of your own private forest, yet close enough to easily run to town for any coffee refills or forgotten items. Thanks again for letting us stay. We really filled the time and, sadly, our vacation was over before we knew it.

Camp Huck is a hoot!

We stayed for 3 nights with a mixture mostly of middle aged adults and a few young adults. This is a splendid mix of a hidden gem and exclusive camping find. The main home is well furnished with a fully equipped kitchen. The old claw tub adds a bit of character, but, not the best bathing experience. The bathhouse behind the Airstream is perfect for hot comfortable showers! The Airstream was fun as a one night stand, so, we traded off as to who slept there. The younger adults loved it. For me, it was a bit too cramped, but, fun nonetheless. Everyone loved the tree house, but, not for old folks with bad knees. The park-like grounds offer plenty of opportunity for recreation. I discovered the loop trail and rode my bike on it numerous times........tons of fun! Think of this off-the-grid retreat as wonderful mix of vacation escape with a little dab of the camping experience thrown in! We loved it! John & Michelle

Wonderful summer retreat!

The property was just perfect for our group of 10! The deck was perfect for lounging around. The kitchen and dining room were perfect for our group dinners, and the hot tub was lovely. The yard is a great size for lawn games! The treehouse is really so beautiful and romantic! We really didn't want to or need to leave the property but we were just 10 minutes from some amazing beaches so we couldn't resist! The town general store was conveniently a couple minutes away. Deb was so easy to communicate with and answered all my questions, the house had everything we needed, and we had a really really wonderful time. I would highly recommend Camp Huckleberry for any of group vacations!

We will be back!

Our family just moved to Northern California and this was our first getaway since moving to the area. We were absolutely blown away by the uniqueness of this property along with the charm of Point Arena. Camp Huckleberry definitely owned up to its description. It had all of the accommodations we could ask for and more. Our kids kept thanking us for the vacation while we were there! We also has fellow VRBO hosts from Washington state that were equally impressed. Deb was great to work with and we will definitely be booking Camp Huckleberry again in the near future.

a very unique property

A beautiful property. We had a great time exploring the grounds. The trailer and tree house gave us room to spread out, not everyone had to wake up at 6 with our 2 year old grandson. The wood burning hot tub was fun, the cabin kitchen was well equipped. We were an extended family of 7 adults and a two year old and the beds in the loft were more suited for children than adults. We definitely would enjoy a second visit, maybe in the summer.

A Special Property Away From It All

Camp Huckleberry was such a fantastic surprise for our family who was seeking refuge from the Northern California fires. Thank you to the Capertons for being so accommodating in this difficult time. We found their home and all the dwellings on the property so charming and comfortable. The Treehouse is incredible since we are Treehouse Masters fans. The Airstream is beautifully restored. Pretty impressive and unique to have on the property. Camp Huck is simply magical! There is so much open space in the meadow where kids can play. Between the Cypress tree swing, horseshoe game and the tether ball, children and adults can be entertained endlessly. The property is massive with marked hiking trails that lead you through gorgeous redwood forests. It's quite hard to leave. We explored Point Arena and fell in love with all the different features of the area. The lighthouse is a wonderful historical landmark with a interesting guided tour and great gift shop. We loved the cove with the pier. It's mesmerizing. The Chowder House was great to enjoy the many beers on tap. Camp Huck offers everything we could ever dream of. It took us away from it all. We are forever grateful for finding this place. We plan to return soon.

Camp Huckleberry is a must.

Deb was a wonderful host! We were a large group traveling from out of town for a wedding in the town. Deb and I chatted briefly on the phone and she caught me up to speed on the basics about the property before booking and followed up with a very detailed property binder with all things needed for our stay. Deb was out of the county during our stay but even with an 8-9 hour difference she was easy to reach and communication was prompt making sure everything was in order for our long weekend. Camp Huckleberry was a treat to stay at! The grounds are large and spacious. Everyone loved the treehouse and the wood burning hot tub. Everyone slept comfortably and mornings on the deck were perfect. Kitchen was well stocked with things needed for cooking with a large group. There were no children in our group but the property is definitely kid friendly. This is a unique and beautiful space to share time outside and not feel like you need to go anywhere else. The only complaint was that we weren't staying longer. It was unanimous that we would be back again and relax at Camp Huckleberry. Thank you Deb!!

Magical Oasis, Huge Gorgeous Unique Property

A large group of 9 extended family members stayed here last summer and we had a WONDERFUL time!! We've rented many, many vacation homes, and this is probably the most memorable and relaxing, certainly the most unique, with the enchanting tree house, air stream, outdoor shower within a tree, gorgeous outdoor acreage AND a lovely circular hiking trail through redwoods right out front. It's the perfect place to let kids romp about in nature, and so private and safe. The main house is lovely and very well built, with a great deck. Only downside I can think of was that the kids' bedding/pillows could have been more comfortable. The kitchen was wonderful and very well stocked. Also the bathroom behind the shower is super nice and large. Utter relaxation! A very quick drive to downtown Point Arena. We will definitely be back.

A unique and whimsical property

We arrived in the pouring rain and it hardly let up all weekend. Cranked the wood stove and stoked the firebox in the wood fired hot tub, and stayed warm and cozy the whole time. Walking through the rain to the heated airstream and the beautifully crafted treehouse only enhanced their aura of charm and delight. Even used the heated outdoor shower in the rain. An experience not to be missed. The main house was entirely adequate for our large group, and the kitchen was among the best supplied I've ever seen in a rental. On saturday, when it cleared for a while, we drove into Point Arena and did one of the nicest coastal day hikes in California, from the lighthouse into town. Bring two vehicles so you can shuttle drivers. All around an amazing place, with an authentic Northern California flavor; perfect for a large group. Can't wait to visit when the weather allows us to throw a frisbee on the lawn. My only critique: More coat hooks in the treehouse and a real porch roof at the front door!

Camp Huckleberry Rocks!

We brought a large group of friends together for a festive extended weekend at Camp Huckleberry, a delightful complex nestled in the hills of Point Arena. We are a nature loving group and this site had it all, a tree house, a cabin with large deck, a restored air stream and a wood burning hot tub under a small grove of redwood trees - can you say stars at night! There was even an campfire ring to maximize outdoor time during chilly winter nights. Everything was clean and neat with all the amenities we could ask for. Deb was great - flexible with our little requests and provided great ideas for local attractions. The site is just outside of small and rustic Point Arena, and near the lighthouse and coastal beaches. You can spend the whole weekend tucked away at Camp Huckleberry or enjoy the nearby sights. Such a lovely place - highly recommended by our entire group (we're already planning another stay!).

This place is a magical spot, hidden in the forest, with spanning lawns, a fab tree house and a super cute, airstream trailer. The house was bright and cheerful and spotlessly clean. When our plans suddenly changed, they made sure it all worked out for us. Thank you so much!

About the host

Host profile image
We live in San Francisco with our 2 daughters, working in the arts and education. In 2002, we purchased this property from a logging company, which had last taken timber off the property about a decade earlier. Development took place slowly over time, from camping on the property to adding the Airstream trailer to building the cabin and tree house. We hope to provide stewardship to this beautiful bit of coastal redwood forest and give it a chance to regain its splendor. By staying at Camp Huckleberry and enjoying all the Mendonoma Coast has to offer, you are helping us achieve that goal. Thanks.

-Deb and John Caperton

Why they chose this property

Deb lived in Point Arena in the early 90's as part of an art collective and maintained a connection with the community throughout the years. Having friends in the neighborhood, she was well aware of how unique this property was when it came up for sale. Looking at the big picture, Camp Huckleberry is a very small segment of the coastal redwood’s limited indigenous habitat. Sitting on a stretch of coast that juts out into the Pacific Ocean, Point Arena has the unique distinction of being the closest town in California to the Hawaiian Islands and is assured to receive life-giving fog. Sitting atop of the Coastal Range, roughly two miles away from and eight hundred feet above the Pacific Ocean, Camp Huckleberry is part of an area locals refer to as the Banana Belt, because the fog often does not make it all the way up the ridge and if it does it usually burns off, leaving the ridge sunny. This means that Camp Huckleberry gets the best of both worlds, the cool majesty of redwood forest as well as ample sunshine. Also, Camp Huckleberry sits on a section of the ridge that is unusually flat, making it substantially easier to enjoy the meadow and explore the trails.

What makes this property unique

Camp Huckleberry is adult, kid and pet friendly. There are many activities to enjoy nearby or you can just relax in a rocking chair on the porch while your pals play Frisbee in the meadow. When it's warm you can take an afternoon nap in the hammock under the redwoods, build forts in the redwood forest and explore creeks with your dog or kids. Many people like to lay down their yoga mat on the deck for a stretch and soak in the hot tub while enjoying the stars. There is something for everyone. Because we have 3 separate accomodations for sleeping and 3 full bathrooms with a large communal space, it's great for groups that want some privacy but also time together. We can provide comfortable accommodations for 1-11 people. Our 55 acre parcel is comprised of a meadow surrounded by a forest laced with creeks. We have made it very accessible. There are multiple well-marked trails with no poison oak, allowing both young and old to witness the flora and fauna that call the coastal redwood forest home. Situated just 2 miles from the coast, we enjoy sunshine on the ridge when the coastal fog is in. Our daughters named it "Camp Huckleberry" for the wealth of fruiting huckleberry bushes that are native to this area and delicious throughout Summer and early Autumn. It is a natural setting to unwind, entertain and explore the rugged splendor of the Mendonoma coast with all the amenities and comforts of home.
