About this property

A recently renovated cottage

Gite Vue des Montagnes is a recently renovated cottage which sleeps a maximum of 6 people. It has French TV and WIFI available.
It is set in two hectares of grounds in an extremely peaceful location with amazing panoramic views of the Pyrenees. They can be rented individually or together.

It benefits from generous sized bedrooms upstairs and a relaxed, open plan layout downstairs. It has a with wood burning stove, English satellite TV and WiFi internet access. It is very family-friendly with a UV-treated pool (shared with the owners, though we don't use it much when gite guests are here) enclosed to French safety standards, swings, and a large, netted trampoline. Children's toys and books are provided.

Local attractions include the mediaeval towns of Mirepoix and Carcassonne, some of Europe's largest caves, several beautiful, supervised swimming lakes, animal parks where you can variously see eagles, wolves, bison and reptiles - there is also a safari park in Toulouse.

Nearby you can take part in kayaking, canoeing, horse or pony riding or a 'parcours dans les arbres' (zip wires, rope ladders, etc) suitable for children as young as three.

We had a super stay

Thank you to Catherine for overseeing a wonderful stay at her charming property. We loved staying in the comfortable and spacious house with the most amazing views of the Pyranees. We were blessed with perfect weather so were able to make full use of the pool and gardens. My kids loved the play equipment (table tennis, trampoline and swings), meeting the chickens and the very friendly cat, Pickle. I would recommend this rustic home to anyone who is looking for a relaxing holiday in an idyllic location.

Vacances reposantes

A very special place!

We stayed at Bertre while house hunting in the area. The hosts Catherine and Alex are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The Gite cannot be faulted, it is comfortable, spacious, clean and well equipped. The views are simply breath-taking. The area has everything you could ever need with nearby Pamiers offering a range of shops, supermarkets and eateries. You are within easy driving distance of Ski resorts and Mediterranean beaches and at the end of the day can unwind in the quiet and peaceful surroundings. I will certainly be booking again and would recommend Bertre without hesitation.

Superb accommodation with fantastic pool and outdoor area surrounded by amazing views

Beautiful and comfortable gite with excellent facilities. Lovely pool and outdoor eating area. Stunning views all around. The Cooper family were really helpful and friendly and put up admirably with the constant attention of our 4 year old wanting to see their cat! Would highly recommend as a beautiful, peaceful home from which to explore the surrounding area of the Pyrenees

Wonderful relaxing stay,lovely gite

We spent a month in this gite, and enjoyed it very much. The gite was spacious and well equipped and the outside terrace was a great place to sit with remarkable views, and never too hot. We made good use of the pool, which warmed up during our stay. The owners Catherine and Alex could not have been more helpful, we succesfully tried several of their recommended restuarants. The area is very unspoilt but full of interest. We did a lot of walking, and saw amazing bird life and flowers. Hope to return.

Traditional French Gite set in the countryside.

What a nice Traditional French Gite set in the countryside overlooking the National Park and majestic views of the Pyrenees. I have enjoyed my initial stay in this comfortable and relaxed atmosphere that I decided to spend a further 11 months here. Why not, it has everything including open plan kitchen/reception, BBQ area, Laundry room, three spacious bedrooms, 2 wc's, fully equipped and with a lovely clean pool while also being kindly cared for by my hosts Catherine and Alex who are always at hand to give advice, invite me for a meal, suggest places to go and visit, allow for my friends and family to frequent and even making sure the fire place is stoked and the wine is chilled for when returning from a trip. What more can one ask for! A real home from home!!

Great stay

Just back from a perfect week at the Gite vue des Montagnes. Location was stunning, pool excellent, accommodation exactly as required plus extensive grounds for our 18 mth old grandson to explore safely and lots of ball games, books, trampoline etc to keep him occupied. Catherine and Alex were extremely helpful both before and during our stay and we would heartily recommend the gite for a relaxing stay. Thanks so much for making it such an unforgettable holiday.

Unparalleled views!

We stayed at the Gite for a month with our two children (6 & 8) and really enjoyed our time. The setting is beautiful, awesome 360 degree views, with only the noise of cow bells and frogs to hear. We found the gite very lovingly restored, the beds were comfortable (lighter bedding or sheets would have been good as we found ourselves too warm towards the end of our stay when the weather heated up), and the shower was excellent. The kitchen is a bit on the small side (lacking bench space) and could use some TLC - the dishwasher racks had broken wheels, one of the gas jets didn't stay alight - and the kitchen lacked basic items like salad and mixing bowls. Other than this, the rest of the gite was very spacious and comfortable. The fire worked well when we needed to use it. A note to future guests is that there are no basic pantry 'staples' provided (such as oil, salt, pepper, sugar) or cleaning and maintenance products, other than what appeared to be left over from previous guests. We had to purchase items that we would expect to find in a holiday rental like garbage bags, kitchen cleaning cloths, dishwashing tablets and firefighters. Our children loved that there were some toys and English books, they enjoyed playing outside with the resident cat Pickle, building a cubby house with the owners' children, the trampoline, table tennis and of course the pool! We enjoyed soaking up the view, cycling through the rolling hills, relaxing by the pool and using the gite to explore the Ariege region. The region has a lot to offer - walks, cycling, caves, mountains, Prehistoric attractions, ropes courses (acro branch), rivers as well as many small towns. There were plenty of tourist brochures in the gite which was a great help in planning trips. A car is a must. We would highly recommend this property to friends.

Perfect holiday house

We stayed in the Gite for four months in late winter and early spring and we had a wonderful experience. The house is located in a beautiful spot, amid rolling hills with perfect stunning views of the Pyrenees. It is very calm , there is not a single noise around , yet it's only 10-15 minutes on the backroads from all the amenities you would need. There are many things to do around( skiing, walking, nice small villages and churches) but we ended up most of the time in the garden with the view of the mountains. The house itself is perfectly maintained, spotlessly clean, fully equipped and decorated with style, using a combination of antique furniture and modern fittings. The owners live on the property, which was great for us , since they are extremely helpful and went of their way to make our stay pleasant ( they installed a protective rail around the wood burning stove for our one-year old baby, which we found very thoughtful). Overall this is a great vacation house in an exceptional location: We didn't really want to leave when our holidays were finished!

Countryside located stone farmnouse

We stayed at the property for three months which is well appointed, with its own washing machine, comfortable and clean. Bed linen and towels provided. There was a fridge. electric cooker and hob. A wood burner in the sitting room supplied with wood by the owners added to the ambiance particularly during the spring months. The surrounding garden boasts spectacular panoramic views of the Pyrenees and in the evening the nightingales are an attraction. The gite is located close to the town of Pamier and the sites of the Midi-Pyrenees are easily reached via the nearby road system

Good stay had but…

The gite is set in an idyllic location on a southward aspect with stunning views across the Pyrenees. It is also well served by the town of Pamiers, which covered all necessities. The building has been beautifully restored and provides a picturesque setting to 'get away from it all.' The open plan ground floor proved a good living space to enjoy time together as a family. There was a good selection of books, games and toys. Although we were slightly disappointed by the TV, which made viewing the good selection of DVD's in the evening frustrating as it's small and the sound piercingly tinny. The kitchen had good facilities for cooking for four, and the dishwasher was a welcome bonus. Although at the cost of a washing machine, I'm not sure it was worth it. All the bedrooms were of a good size, albeit a little spartan for our taste. The mattresses were comfortable but the presence of a footboard on the double beds meant that if you are over six foot tall, as one of us is, a good night sleep was somewhat elusive. The bathroom was excellent whilst having two WCs, with one separate, made bathing was a relaxing experience with great views out up the valley. The shower was shower was excellent too. The pool and garden facilities are superb here; an abundance of land for kids to play and roam, table tennis, trampoline, clean swimming pool, surpassed our expectations. Although in the heat of the day there was a gathering of thirsty wasps around the pool. However, once we informed the hosts, this was dealt with as best it could be. Whilst evenings sitting in the alfresco dining area for meals, watching the sunset over the mountains will live long in the memory. There is also excellent access to some of the worlds best cycling if that's your thing, as it ours. With Ax-les-thermes being a good trip on cooler days. Alex and Catherine were both helpful during our stay, especially when the power 'tripped'. They also allowed us the added security of paying via the website, which was much appreciated. Would I recommend to a friend? Yes, but with the caveats of, lack of washing machine and be under 6 foot. Also, there was no wifi available in the gîte, even after it apparently had been fixed.

Great holiday in a fantastic house/surrounding!

What a fantastic house and surrounding.

Best Gite in the Area by Far

We were fortunate to be able to spend a lot of time at this gite over the last year; we kept booking more time there because we could not bear to leave! The gite is, honestly, of an exceptional standard for this part of France. For a start, everything in it is new and recently done (except of course for the lovely antique furniture). It's been converted with great empathy for the original building but with a stylish and modern finish. The kitchen is modern and well equipped with everything you need for your holiday catering, and the open plan layout is really sociable. The bedrooms are extremely light and spacious with polished wood floors and high ceilings and new, very comfortable mattresses! The bathroom would look at home in any boutique hotel and the shower is large and powerful with great water flow. Needless to say it's maintained to a high standard and is very clean! The interior is truly lovely but really a stay here is about the exterior of the property. I challenge anyone to tire of gazing at the magnificent chain of the Pyrenees, not to mention the miles of rolling green countryside running up to it. I have yet to visit another property with a view like this. The grounds of the gite encourage the grown-ups to relax and forget it all while the children burn off steam running free or on the trampoline. The pool and surrounding area are done to a very high standard and lying back in the cool water while gazing at the the Pyrenees is a real treat. The pool is also a good size, larger than many of the properties we've viewed out here. For nature lovers there is plenty to see in or around the grounds: from deer and pine martins to hen harriers, kestrels and owls. Idyllic and out of the way this gite is, you're not far from civilisation! You can get bread within a ten minute walk to the village (baked by a man in his garden bakery on certain days!) or the nearby town offers everything (12 minutes pretty drive to a supermarket). Crucially, you can get provisions in the town up to 1230 on a Sunday - a bonus for France! You can also dine out REALLY well around here, superb locally sourced food for all budgets and tastes. There are some great sites to explore all within an hour's drive and you can do some wonderful outdoor activities at a fraction of the price of the UK. To top it all off, Catherine and Alex are extremely conscientious owners and hosts, they will make every effort to make your stay perfect for you.

About the host

Hosted by Catherine Cooper

Host profile image
Catherine is a freelance journalist and Alex is a TV director and photographer. They have two children, Toby, 10, and Olivia, 8. We moved to France in 2009 to enjoy a more relaxed pace of life, leisurely lunches, skiing in winter and of course, sun in summer. We have never looked back.

Why they chose this property

Because the view of the Pyrenees is just incredible - it has to be seen to be believed. Also we have the perfect balance of feeling very rural while also being close to shops, schools and other facilities.

What makes this property unique

Our view. It really is something special. Also both houses have been carefully renovated by Alex and local builders to keep many original features (stone walls, wooden beams, Captain's beds and antique French furniture) while also offering all modern comforts.
