Town: Lying south of the Peak District, Ashbourne is a perfect example of an English market town - it has a market place with stalls, eccentric street plan, narrow cobbled alleys, coaching inns and almshouses. In its heyday in the 18th century, the town was a fashionable social centre and many fine Georgian buildings remain from this period. Today the town still has much to offer in terms of restaurants and inns and is regarded as something of a haven for antique hunters - but dont expect a bargain! For those who prefer outdoor pursuits, the Dove and Manifold Valleys are close by. Alton Towers is just 20 minutes away.
