About this property
Renovated spacious 3 bedr. home in Poros, Heraklion, Crete
1970s maisonette restored to it's former glory. Boasting 240sqm of space this unit is a great option for small groups or families, and it can be rented by even 1 or 2 people. The rate you see is for the full house however should you require 1 or 2 rooms please enquire for a lower rate. Either way we offer exclusive use, so no matter if you book 1, 2, or all 3 bedrooms, you will not share with anyone else. Non-booked rooms will be locked. While there is space for more, we do not allow more than 6 guests. We do not want people sleeping in the living area.
The location for Heraklion is prime! You can get no better. A short 500m walk from the ferry port, less than 1km from the city centre and close access to the airport (3.5km), shopping, coffee bars and restaurants. Even better than living right in town as here you have ample parking, free and unrestricted, and it's not as noisy at night (bar the aeroplanes in summer which is expected all around Heraklion).
Only 30m down the road you have to visit our good friends at "En Plo", Heraklion's premium seafood venue (they do other meals too, and takeaways if you wish to eat in). "En Plo" also keeps the keys for Spanaki 26, and they are open from 11am until late, so fetching and dropping off the keys is easy.
The living area on the ground floor with 3 large reception rooms, comfortable brand new furniture and dining seating for 6. The kitchen is fully equipped. Appliances, crockery, cutlery and all the mod cons in a renovated kitchen where we have retained classic features like the solid marble kitchen sink. The floors are all highly polished mosaic, another classic feature not found in modern homes. Practical and easy to keep clean. There is a large air conditioner serving the reception rooms.
There is a small courtyard outside the kitchen, a great place for a coffee or meal on a hot day, under the shade of the large pomegranate tree.
All doors and windows have shutters, so it's easy to lock them and still keep a flow of fresh air through the house.
All 3 bedrooms are on the 1st floor and have their own private balcony, new high-end pocket coil beds, with Egyptian cotton linen and soft cotton towels are provided. Each room has it's own air conditioner.
The unit has the best in water supply (Heraklion has regular water cuts). We have 2500 liters of storage, high pressure pumps, and a large solar water heater. The guest toilet (downstairs) and main bathroom (upstairs) have recently been redone in top end Villeroy & Boch tiles and fittings, and there is a shower only (no bath). We also have an open air shower on the 2nd floor Terrazza which is a great place to cool off after sunbathing on the loungers provided.
The laundry room is also on the 2nd floor, with washer and air drying facilities, ironing board, etc. We can also supply our maid service for a very reasonable 8 EUR per hour.
Views - from the upper floors great views to the port. Each bedroom has it's own balcony with views of the town or port.
Wifi is free and available throughout the house.
TV? Nope. We don't like TV on holiday and don't expect you will miss it either.
Juli our maid is from Sri Lanka and speaks perfect English, and Greek too. She can visit on extra days during your stay should you wish for EUR8 per hour. If you like a good curry (impossible to find in Greece) speak nicely to Juli and she’ll make you the tastiest curry for a reasonable price.
We hope you will try out Spanaki 26 for your next visit to Heraklion. Heraklion beaches are a short 4-6 drive/bus ride and it's a great base to explore the island from, with easy access to reasonably priced restaurants and avoid the over priced package tour venues. The city centre is buzzing, each and every night, and in the daytime you have quick access to the port or highway to get out of the city.

About the host
Hosted by Sheelagh

We live in South Africa. My parents came to Africa after WW2 and they built this home on my late Grandfather's property. My grandfather was a famous historian in Crete and the road is now named after him, Stergiou Spanakis. His home is right next door to this house. We try visit Greece often and now that we have renovated 26 Spanaki, we will use this as a base for more adventures in Greece.
Why they chose this property
This property is special as it is on the garden that my mother was raised in. The old home was occupied by German troops for a few years, they had to relocate, and then came back to it after the war.
The location has to be the best in Heraklion. The city is a short walk, yet our area has the widest streets in the town and parking is always available, free and unrestricted.
The port is even closer and a very short walk from the ferry terminal. We also have quick access to the airport, only a few km away, far enough to not be too noisy but be warned Heraklion is very busy in the season with air traffic.
Crete has so much to do and see so Heraklion is a good central base. The night life in Heraklion is buzzing, especially in the summer months, and living close to town is great, avoiding long drives home after a night out.
We have over a period of 6 weeks renovated this home, retaining some special features such as the polished floors and marble kitchen sink, and added the best in modern conveniences including upgrading the water supply system, solar heating, and the latest air conditioning and heating systems. Where possible we have bought local, to support the struggling Greek economy. The beds for example are top end pocket coil pillow top mattresses, and all the linen is high thread count Egyptian cotton. Towels are plush cotton, so you are assured of a comfortable stay.
The kitchen is fully equipped with Bosch and Siemens appliances, microwave but no dishwasher. There was no space to put one in without destroying the old design cabinets that are narrower than the current standards.
Our terrazza on the top floor is a great place to catch a tan. Loungers are available and an outside shower for a quick cool off. It gets hot up there! The laundry has washing, air drying and ironing facilities, and you have the option of employing our maid Juli directly for 5 EUR/hr, she is great, from Sri Lanka and speaks perfect English and Greek too!

What makes this property unique
The home was architect designed and is spacious, 240 sqm in floor area. The ceilings are high, really high, so nice and cool in summer. Every bedroom has it's own balcony too, with great views, something rare these days. All doors and windows have shutters, great to keep a fresh breeze through, and if it's still too hot you have an Aircon in each room.
We have a small "avli" or yard off the kitchen with trees and loads of shade. Great for an al fresco meal in the evening.
