About this property

Romantic, Open Air, Waterfront Retreat for 2

Total privacy and miles from the nearest neighbor, the clothing optional setting is akin to a private island. Sited above the dramatic rocky shoreline, you will be lulled to sleep by cooling trade breezes and the sound of the waves. Furnished in mid century modern style with all you need for a vacation unplugged.

Bright, light very breezy location like being on the bridge of a ship. Air conditioning not needed but available if winds drop, however there are strict limitations on A/C use since the home is solar powered. IF AIR CONDITIONING IS A MUST, THIS IS NOT THE HOME FOR YOU.

Main level of the home; our greeter will contact you to arrange to meet for check-in and orientation. Prior to arrival, I will forward a Rental Agreement and A-Z Guide for details about the home, special considerations and rental rules.

We live on island and are available with questions but focus of this home is "private, romantic getaway for two"

We are the only home in the subdivision at the very east end of the island about a fifteen minute drive from Coral Bay with stores and restaurants.

Perfect getaway for two!

The property was just as pretty as depicted - great location, and very private. We spent most of our time exploring the east end of St John, and Eco Haute was a good base for this. First time at this property, but we will be back!!

12th time on the island and loved this Villa

Property was spectacular and remote. We had a blast driving to and fro and seeing such wonderful views. You can spend all day on the deck just watching the sails and boats and ships go by your front porch. Bring some warm wear to be out on deck at night!

Stunning and amazing condition post hurricanes!

It may be one of the most remote homes on island but worth every min of travel for those looking for peace, quite, and one of the best Views on St John. Great to see the island has come such a long way in 15 months.

Paradise

The home was just like paradise. It was beautiful inside and out and the views were spectacular!! It was a bit further out than other homes but the drive was worth it once you got there. The home was very nicely appointed and had everything you needed and then some. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to stay there again in the near future!!

A beautiful retreat in paradise.

The view is breathtaking. The home is perfectly beautiful. My wife and I really had a difficult time packing the car yesterday to come home from this 5 star retreat. It felt like we were staying on a deserted island by ourselves, but Coral Bay is only a short drive away. The private beach at the bottom of the stairs is worth the hike down the hill. See you next time!

Words will fall short. This place is perfection.

This was our ultimate getaway. The house was simple, private, yet well appointed, and had a view that we will not soon forget. It made for the most incredible vacation we have ever taken. We would rent this house every time we have the pleasure of visiting St. John. The snorkeling on the private beach and all along the rocky shores to the grassy beach was the best we experienced on the island. The drive to the house didn't get old either. The views and the privacy....wow.

End of the road

St. John’s is a very laid-back quiet island but if Cruz Bay and all the North Shore beaches are just a little too loud and crowded this house will be perfect for you. Be ready to drive a little bit to get anywhere and watch out for the goats and donkeys. This house is the perfect set up for two. You are literally the last house on St. John staring straight at the British Virgin Islands. One suggestion would be not to watch scary movies at night. You are definitely alone down a long dark very mountainous road.

Best F**ing Vacation Ever!

The photos are accurate, but to understand you really have to go experience Eco Haute. What makes this home unique is total privacy and immersion in St. John's natural surroundings while being spoiled with first class attention to comfort and amenities. Kelly did an outstanding job supporting us during our stay, including guiding us in on the first day. A little heart pounding the first time, but the roads are well maintained and we only needed to share the lane with adorable Billy goat families. We will remember this trip to St. John with joy, peace and thankfulness.

Always amazing

My wife and I stay here every year. It never disappoints. We just returned home after a week of sun, beaches, and relaxation. You can not go further away from stress than here. It is literally at the other end of the island, at the end of the road, in a tranquil and secluded setting. If you like crowds and bustling nightlife, do not stay here. If you want peace and quiet in a romantic setting, with unbelievable views, look no more. This is a perfect place for couples. See you next time Bob and Karye!

Second trip even better than the first!

My wife and I first rented Eco over 2 years ago and had the best vacation of our lives. However, our recent trip was even better. The house has been updated since Irma and was in great shape. We love that the kitchen is wonderfully furnished, including non-perishable essentials. We enjoy the isolation and privacy the property allows. This trip we had a calm day and were able to snorkel the reef at the private beach. Karye and Bob make the whole process simple and easy. Our only regret was that we could only stay for a week. Next time we will shoot for two.

Bliss

We had a wonderful time at Eco Haute. The wrap-around deck with what seemed like an "infinity edge" view to the ocean was magical. While we enjoyed snorkeling and kayaking most days, we also spent several days not leaving the cottage...Eco Haute became the main draw for us to be at St. John. As other reviewers remarked, the drive up to Eco Haute, particularly the last 5 minutes, was a "heart stopper" at times; I would suggest no "drinking and driving" or driving at night in the dark. We were happy to stay at the cottage, so this did not interfere with our fabulous vacation at Eco Haute. Truly a 5-star experience!

AMAZING!

We both agreed this was one of our best vacations ever!! The house is so nice and the view is incredible!! We never tired of sitting an watching the boats go by in the channel and listening to the water. The hosts were great, and we went out daily for hikes and snorkeling. Highly recommend Busy Bee for charter adventures. It’s a gorgeous 25 min drive back to Coral Bay, so get your groceries on the way in if you’re ready to kick back. We went all over the island and agree that Coral Bay area and the East End have just the laid back vibe and relaxed pace we love! We will definitely be back. The house is incredible well equipped and has everything you need for a great week! Already planning our next trip!

Gorgeous home and spectacular views!

This was our first visit to St. John, USVI and we will definitely be back. Leslie was very gracious and met us at the grocery store she recommended in Cruz Bay and we followed her to Eco Haute on the east side of the island. It was a beautiful drive through the island and along the beaches. I have to admit I am afraid of heights and the roads were a bit steep and narrow and at one point during our stay I got out of the jeep and walked up the road. When we arrived, the home and view were absolutely breathtaking and the constant breeze is therapeutic. The home was well stocked and there was a nice surprise in the fridge for us! The owners were very accommodating and helpful with recommendations. I highly recommend Eco Haute and can't wait to return this beautiful and tranquil island retreat! Thank you Bob, Karye and Leslie

Did not want to leave!

My husband and I just spent an amazing, relaxing week at Eco Haute and we really didn't want to leave! It's such a special and unique location. Honestly, whenever we would leave the house to pop into town or head to a beach, we always looked forward to getting back to the house! The breezes are amazing and constant and really keep the house cool, so we would leave the windows and doors open all day and night. The outdoor lounge chairs were extremely comfortable and the views from the deck were breathtaking! And thanks to the well-equipped kitchen, we were able to cook most of our own meals while on the island (it's quite a drive to town). If you're looking for absolute privacy, amazing views and cool, ocean breezes, oh, and your own little private pool to cool off in, this is it. This house will leave you wanting for nothing. I already can't wait to return someday! If you do choose to stay here, please say 'hi' to the adorable, roaming goats for me!

Perfect 30th Anniversary Trip!

Eco Haute is the perfect anniversary getaway! We loved being “off-the-grid” with just the cool ocean breezes and miles of expansive turquoise water views. If you download the Marine Traffic app, you can get information about the various registered sailboats and yachts drifting by which is always fun. The home is perfectly appointed with everything you need to cook in the evenings. We recommend getting back to the house before dark because the roads can be challenging. They aren’t necessarily hard (rent a Jeep), we just preferred to travel by daylight and spend the evenings at home on the deck with a glass of wine and some music. We spent our days hiking, snorkeling, and seeing various sites. Our favorite lunch spot is Aqua Bistro in Coral Bay. The Dolphin grocery is right there as well, so it was easy to grab what we needed for dinner on our way out. This is our third trip to St. John and Eco Haute was by far the best experience yet! Karye and Bob are lovely homeowners and Chris was a great host meeting us at the car ferry so we could follow him to the house and get all the particulars. Thanks again Karye and Bob – you helped make our 30th anniversary very special. See you again soon! Shelly & Rich

Perfect location to celebrate our 20th!

If you are looking for a place that is truly off the beaten path, Eco Haute is it! We were first drawn to the location while we were looking for a remote house to unplug from our 3 teenagers and basically life in general. The pictures were amazing, but as these things usually are, the real thing was even better than expected. There are NO neighbors and as best I could tell, the closest house was a half mile or so away. The drive time to Cruz Bay (about 40 minutes) is an easy trade off for what Eco Haute provides in isolation and beauty. The views to the east up the Drake Channel provide 200 degree plus open water views of Tortola, Norman island, Peter Island, and Virgin Gorda in the distance. We started our 8 day visit on a night where we were welcomed by a rising Full over Virgin Gorda that lit up the channel like it was the middle of the day. The drive from East End road for the last 5-8 minutes of the drive is part of the adventure. The first time is eye nopening, but its really no more intimidating than any other road on the island. Easily done with our rented jeep and each turn provided amazing views. Hansen and Haulover are about 10 minutes from the villa. We did a balance of eat-in and eat-out and found the kitchen was perfect for two to be creative. We picked up most of our food at Calabash Market in Coral Bay or Starfish Market if we were near Cruz Bay earlier in the day. A lot here, but we truly loved the location and just returned home to a 24 degree morning :-)

East End Saint John Gem

This property far exceeded our expectations for a quiet, Christmas vacation. Communication with owner, Karye, was exceptional. Kelly (property manager) was very easy to communicate with. She met us in Coral Bay and we followed her out to the property, where she did a thorough walk-through. The property was clean, comfortable furnishings, updated kitchen. It has a simple layout with a bonus yoga room that we used to store our bags in. The porch is amazing with unobstructed views of BVI. Have your morning coffee watching the sunrise over BVI and the sailboats. No need for the AC as the breeze is very strong. We hiked down to the beach below a few times, which requires sturdy shoes. Walked along the hilly, desolate roads to get into the property. You'll need a vehicle with good tires to wind your way out to the property. Went to the east end beaches, Haulover, Hansen, Brown Bay (requires a hike with sturdy shoes). Loved Saltwell Beach too. We are frequent visitors to Saint John and decided to split this trip up. We stayed in Cruz Bay to enjoy being close to ferry, north end beaches/hikes, walk to restaurants/shopping. Then move out to the countryside for some quiet and evenings at the house. Thank you Karye and Bob for building this amazing property for others to enjoy.

Simply Incredible!

We recently celebrated our 28th anniversary at Eco Haute. Everything about our stay was fantastic. Leslie met us at the car ferry dock and escorted across the island to the villa where a very nice welcome basket awaited. While the interior of the home is lovely, the outdoor space is the show stopper. The photos we saw prior to our arrival were beautiful but could not compare to the real thing. This was the most amazing property we have ever rented. We spent our mornings and early afternoons on the deck and in the pool. The kitchen was fully stocked and made our meal prep easy. We then ventured out for snorkeling trips in the afternoon followed by dinner. We loved the remoteness and isolation of the location and were able to get anything we needed in Coral Bay about 10-15 minutes away. We were concerned about how hot it would be in late June, but we never had to turn on the AC. The trade winds kept us very comfortable throughout our stay. The only issue we had was a minor problem with the safe. Bob and Karye were quick to respond and resolved the problem without impacting our stay. We have been looking at our calendar to find a time for a return trip. FYI, we rented our Jeep in St. Thomas from Amalie Car Rental- 5 star family run business.

Our favorite place in St. John

My wife and I have stayed here several times the past few years. We were concerned about the damage to the island after the two hurricanes hit last year. We just returned from St. John this past Friday and I'm happy to report that the island is well under recovery mode. There are plenty of reminders that this island went through catastrophic storms, including shipwrecked boats in some of the harbors, and shells of homes that didn't make it through the hurricanes. The national parks are not as green as they were last year. We were told by many locals that the storm "blew the green" right off the trees. The beaches are just as beautiful, however, and we visited our favorites, including Trunk and Jumbie beach, Haulover, and Hawksnest beaches. Eco Haute is as fabulous as always. We enjoy sitting on the deck in the morning with our cofee and just relax, watching the boats go by and enjoy the wonderful view of the surrounding islands. If you like to stay in a secluded place with gorgeous views this place is for you. You are miles from the nearest store or other homes for that matter. This is our happy place! Thank you Bob and Karye for your hospitality. We love your place and consider it our second home. One day we hope to be your neighbors. See you next time. Don & Carlynn

About the host

Hosted by Karye Carney

Host profile image
We've lived on St. John since 1979; Bob was the dive master at Caneel Bay for 25 years and still loves to fish and dive. I am a real estate broker and appraiser. We've traveled the Caribbean extensively and have yet to find a place that compares with the small town feel and laid back atmosphere of St John, not to mention being under the US flag.

Why they chose this property

We selected this site when Bob was building the roads for the development. When we reached the end of the road and saw this property we knew this was a special place. From the bluff where we sited the house we could see the aqua blue waters lapping the small pocket beach below and we were sold. The house is as close to that bluff as possible so you can hear the lap of waves along the beach day and night and watch pelicans and terns dive for fish below. Our architect carefully designed the compact home to live large, maximize the constant cooling breezes and be positioned for the best solar collection. It was constructed with recycled materials and designed to be totally self sufficient for the smallest impact on the environment but without compromising comfort and high finish quality.

What makes this property unique

Private and pristine and perched just above the turquoise Caribbean waters, once you arrive it is like being on your own little island. Exercise has never been easier with a walk or run through private subdivision roadways. There are paths to beaches on either side of the property; one fairly well groomed to the east and one to Newfound Beach to west for the more hardy and adventurous.
