The Highlight of our trip to Italy!

So many times, one is disappointed by the reality of a booking, but Arco al Poggio exceeded our expectations, and then some! From the moment we pulled up to the apartment we knew we had arrived at someplace special. Gaia made us feel right at home and I must say that the welcome basket and fridge full of food was a blessing after traveling for 20+ hours. Our family stay was for a week, and during that time we only had only two days of nice weather, but the woodstove in the apartment kept us cozy. The kitchen was amazing, with top of the line pots and pans, which allowed me to try "home cooked" regional recipes. The property is just a stone's throw from the charming village of San Gusme', which serenaded us with its church bell daily. Be sure to have dinner at nearby Osteria alla Villa... let them know your staying at Arceno Rentals when you make your reservation for a great table, great food and wonderful service. Gaia was very responsive to our questions, and provided a wireless hotspot when storms knocked out local service. The apartment was well-appointed with games and movies, which helped during the bad weather. A grocery store is located minutes away in Castelnuovo Berardenga, along with a self-serve gas station. Can't overstate how much we enjoyed our stay... frankly, if the apartment wasn't already booked, we would have stayed another week and skipped Rome. Thanks, Arceno Rentals.. we hope to be back someday!

Nice setting spoilt by bug bites

Positives Good setting Nice swimming pool Great views Well equipped with wine & food on arrival Negatives No air conditioning - which was needed during our stay (but to be fair was not listed in amenities beforehand) Cleanliness not to a standard expected in general (sofa in particular) Overnight bug bites leading to infection ruined the experience

Tuscan Oasis

Our group of two couples looking for a true Tuscan experience of a lifetime found “il pogglio” an amazing home away from home. Its farmhouse charm is intoxicating - from the inside layout, to the veranda, the outside amenities (pool, gardens, vineyards), and most especially the views to the hills and distant mountain peaks. We spent 8 days exploring the area from Siena to Montepulciano and everything in between. We highly recommend Cresti’s just a few miles southwest for an awesome Chianti wine tasting treat. Then walk to the tree-studded hilltop that is their label/logo and discover the ancient pyramid - not in any of our guidebooks. Anna & Gaia (our concierge) were a joy to work with. The villa was sparkling clean and well provisioned throughout our stay. We would rate the accommodations and management team a 10 out of 10 and eagerly await our return. Ciao!!!

Beautiful Tuscan Getaway

We enjoyed every moment of our stay at Il Poggio. The email communication and arrival information were clear and easy. We were met by Gaia upon our arrival. What a gem! Even though we had visited the area previously and know many of the inns and outs, she was a wealth of information, giving restaurant suggestions and day trip ideas. The house itself was wonderful. We were four people (my husband and 2 boys~ ages 8 and 11) and we had everything we needed. After a long journey, the welcome basket was a fabulous treat. The house itself was tasteful, and we felt as though we had really come home. The book collection, music selection, sat tv etc. made for an easy transition for all. The bathrooms were modern and the kitchen use was a wonderful bonus. We had an excellent week and enjoyed coming home at the end of each day. The Arceno property is stunning at any time of year and is always fun to explore. I'd give more stars if I could. We will be back for sure. Grazie Anna and Gaia!

Great loggia at Il Poggio

The biggest attraction for me is the unusual spacious loggia with a wonderful view, great for breakfast, lunch and dinner or just lounging, no matter what kind of weather. The house itself is very welcoming: it is clean, kept up well, with tasteful interior, well equipped kitchen and good mattresses. The house, garden and pool are beautiful situated in the quiet Tuscan landscape. It feels secluded, but in the near neighborhood are some lovely villages to go to the market or just to have coffee or for great Tuscan food (Castelnuovo Berardenga, San Gusme and Ambra (leather factory). And Siena is also not very far.

Fantastic summer break

Great stay. The apartment is lovely and peaceful. The owners are very generous with a great welcome package and unlimited wine and olive oil. Highlight was to be invited to enjoy the wonderful celebration dinner in the local town square.

Peaceful Tuscan Getaway

Arco il Poggio was the perfect property for our family of four (two adults, two young men in their twenties). Comfortable, clean, quiet, and homey. The setting among vineyards and olive trees looks like a postcard of Tuscany. Gaia, the concierge, was very helpful and met us on arrival. The welcome basket included enough food for dinner that evening and breakfast the next morning; we really appreciated not having to go to the grocery store right away. Kitchen is stocked with all the pots, pans, utensils, etc. any cook could need. The mid-week cleaning and linen change was a nice way to refresh things. Bathrooms are clean and modern. Master bedroom very spacious with a huge wardrobe for clothing. Cozy bathrobes were a welcome touch. We used Arceno as our base for excursions to Florence, San Gimignano, Siena, Montepulciano, Gaiole in Chianti (highly recommend Tuscany Bicycle there), and Lago Tresimano, as well as nearby Castelnuovo Berardenga. (Fabulous meal at AnonimaX in CB: the pecorino cheese souffle with fresh shaved white truffles was a standout.) In the evening we spotted deer and a wild boar but none of the local porcupines. If you are looking for a scenic, quiet Tuscan location, thoughtfully restored and beautifully maintained, this is the place for you. We hope to return in the summer when we can use the pool!

Planned for excellence, actuality was even better

Perfect location 12 miles outside of Siena. Countryside around Villa was spectacular with each local village charming, and challenging each other with five star restaurants. We enjoyed evenings especially as the sun went down we break out the wine and cheese. Everything was updated and supplied. Great for two couples. Everything exceed expectations.

Wonderful property...wonderful hosts!

My adult daughter and I stayed here for a week the end of March, 2018. The villa was perfect for us! Anna is wonderful to deal with...she communicates promptly and her instructions are crystal clear. The villa itself is located in the most beautiful area of the southern Chianti region. There are 3 lovely small towns very nearby...San Gusme, Villa a Sesta and Castelnuovo Berardenga...each of which has some outstanding restaurants. There is a Coop in Castelnuovo Berardenga...it is small but has all the necessities you might need. Siena is about a 25-30 minute drive to the west...definitely worth a day’s visit. The villa was immaculately clean, the furniture was extremely comfortable, the kitchen contained everything you would ever need and was very updated, the bathrooms were both large and lovely, and the views out the windows were magical. Gaia, the concierge, was extremely helpful with restaurant reservations and anything else a visitor might want...it was so nice to know she was close by if we needed anything. I would highly recommend this villa to everyone!!

Beautiful property and a great location in the heart of Tuscany

My family and I stayed at Arco Al Poggio at the start of September 2017 and could not have hoped for a better villa. Arco Al Poggio is set in the beautiful grounds of Arceno, surrounded by vineyards. The exact location of the property is peaceful and the villa itself is set in a larger property containing two other small homes, so it is very private. Nearby, the small towns of San Gusme and Castelnuovo Berardenga are a short drive away. Both have several fantastic restaurants and the latter has a great supermarket to buy essential supplies. Siena, Montepulciano and Florence are easily accessible As for the property itself, we would definitely recommend it and stay again in the future. It's the little touches that make the holiday one to remember. - Anna and Gaia provide a seamless experience from start to finish with Gaia only a call away to offer concierge services / advice before and during your stay. - A fantastic welcome food hamper is provided along with wine and drinks trolley - The villa is spotless throughout (and cleaned during your stay - twice in a 10 day holiday for us) - Every amenity you could possibly want in a self catering villa is provided from a wide variety of kitchen equipment, DVDs, coffee machine, BBQ, Books etc - The pool area is well maintained and quiet My wife and I normally stay in hotels on holiday but after experiencing the flexibility of a self catering villa of this quality we are sold for future holidays and would finish by saying that Arco Al Poggio has set the bar high!

Wonderful Tuscan Countryside Escape

If you wish to relax in the hypnotic beauty of the Tuscan countryside (in the middle of a 1000 hectare vineyard), then this is a great option. This villa is a historic building that has been sensitively restored and fitted out to a very high standard. Tip: going with the club option is a good bet, as you'll have everything you need (in fridge, wines, drinks cabinet, for bbq) already in situe when you arrive (high quality local produce)..... and the mid-week clean + sheet change is a blessing.

Fabulois, charming, everything you need is supplied.

All the previous reviews sum it up. An absolute gem - everything you need or think you'll need is supplied from the gorgeous basket of food that was there on arrival through to all the Aceno estate wine. Would highly recommend this place. You definitely need a car. The local village has lovely restaurants, cafe, ATM. The swimming was well used and full laundry facilities. Watch out for the insects and mosquitoes - take insect repellent especially if you sit outside at night.

Tuscan paradise!

Many thanks to Anna Crawford for providing such a beautiful restful Tuscan paradise for us to enjoy during our Italian getaway! This villa is a fabulous accommodation in the middle of gorgeous Tuscan countryside providing all the conveniences you would possibly need for your home away from home. Wild boar, deer, rabbits, pheasants and more abound around this gorgeous property. The property is beautifully landscaped with fruit trees – flowering shrubs and glorious potted plants, lavender in bloom, roses and Ginistra filled the air with perfume. A refreshing private pool was so enjoyed in late afternoon after our excursions. (Wonderful Tuscan towns are a short drive away!). Delicious generous welcome gift basket, a full bar, refrigerator stocked with goodies and wonderful bedrooms and baths make it an excellent value for the discriminating traveler. Many thanks to Gaia for taking good care of us! If you are searching for the perfect place to enjoy a private Tuscan vacation. ....This is it !!!!

Tranquility in Tuscany

Arceno il Poggio is a lovely, peaceful villa in Classico Chianti region of Tuscany. The villa is what we expected and more. Arceno lies on the outskirts of Castelnouvo Berardenga and San Gusme. Castelnouvo is a small town but it has readily available restaurants and groceries . We enjoyed our 2 week stay and all the amenities offered by the villa. Exceptional service was provided by our concierge, 'Gaia' who while not on-site was readily available and receptive to our needs.

WE COULD NOT ASK FOR MORE

We read the reviews and thought this is for us! Two couples who enjoy spending their holidays together but also like to have their own privacy and space. This house was perfect! Well appointed, very elegantly furnished and with everything one might need for a cooking lesson. What fun we have had in learning how to make pasta. The owner Anna and her team gave us all the right tips to enjoy the house, the estate where it is located and the surrounding area. They were always there for us and they made our life so easy from our arrival until the end of our holiday (not to mention the welcome basket and drinks we found on arrival!). Our first time in Italy, we were a little daunted of not being able to find our way around in only one week. However everything went so smoothly and the hospitality offered was "luxurious" to say the least. Finally we must mention the fantastic place where the property is located, Arceno, unique in this part of the world and very exclusive. The villa is perfect for two couples but also for a family with two children. Thanks Anna for the fantastic experience. We are looking forward to another week of Tuscan "dolce vita".

First class Tuscan villa

Arco al Poggio has been a unique experience for its setting and the immaculate and extremely well appointed house. We arrived in the evening and everything was laid on for us, we had nothing to take care of, a very warm greeting and a fantastic welcome basket that had enough for our first dinner and breakfast. What we wanted from our holiday was to explore that area of the Chianti region of which we had heard so much. Positioned in the exceptionally beautiful private estate of Arceno, it is few minutes walk through the vineyards to the small village of San Gusmè where we could dine and do small shopping. All you expect from a holiday in the rolling hills of Tuscany! The area offers so much, first class restaurants, wineries where you may taste the local wines, the Arceno and Felsina having been our favourites. All this discovered thanks to the owner Anna who very friendly supported us during our own stay. Overall it has been a unique experience hopefully to be repeated soon.

Like Returning Home.

We always love returning to this lovely property because it has everything one could possibly need while staying in Tuscany. The location, scenery, vistas, well maintained gardens, are always a plus. There are wonderful, convenient restaurants nearby or markets should you want to cook in. The property is also well maintained and managed and the bountiful welcome basket stocked with the first evening's meal and the morning breakfast is a highlight. Excellent wine, beer, coffee and sparkling water round out the beverages. We will return again and again to this lovely property.

Beautiful country home, relaxing atmosphere, great views, fabulous walks.

This place is fabulous. Vanessa met us and toured us through the house and around the yard, which includes a pool. She explained the use of the appliances, showed us where everything was in the house, gave us her contact information and restaurant suggestions. A very warm welcome. ll Poggio is accessed via a drive over country roads and up a hill to a position near the top. Walking up stone steps to a covered porch with views over the valley brings you to the main level. Sitting in this outside space with wine and cheese in the late afternoon away from distracting noises is very relaxing. The main level kitchen, dining and sitting areas share the same large space in an open concept. The kitchen features modern appliances, is well stocked with all the kitchen necessities and was an invitation to cook our own Italian meals. We enjoyed a tasty breakfast here, with supplies bought at the local grocery store, before starting our day. The welcome basket (a great touch) contained coffee, cold meat, cheese, jam, honey, pasta, sauce, bread and wine. The dining area has a sizeable table and 8 chairs. The sitting area has a comfortable couch and lounging chairs next to the large fireplace with wood burning stove. The bedroom on the main level is roomy with plenty of wardrobe space. The bathroom with shower is next to this room, as is the washing machine. The second bedroom is upstairs. It is larger than the main floor bedroom, with a large wardrobe, desk, couch and chairs. The adjacent spacious bathroom is modern with a great tub and shower combination. All windows in the home have screens so they can be opened to allow a cool night breeze in and keep any insects out. The town of San Gusmé, about a kilometer away, is visible from the second floor bedroom through the vineyard. You can hear the peel of the church bell. A twenty-minute walk in a bucolic setting of trees and vines leads to the Arceno winery. After a tasting of the locally produced wines we walked about 30 minutes to San Gusmé for some pasta and pizza in this small, quiet town. A short drive from the house is the town of Castelnuovo Berardegna. Go to Bengodi Enoteca Ristorante. Have the risotto. Enjoy the Thursday morning market. Volterra, San Gimignano, Siena, Castellina in Chianti are all within a short, scenic drive of Il Poggio, as are some great vineyards in this south region of Chianti. Make this your home base in this part of Tuscany. This is the Italian experience you came for.

II Poggio - Idyllic

We have just returned to the UK after two weeks in Italy. After touring in the first week, the second week spent at the II Poggio villa in Tuscany was idyllic. It was a great place to relax after spending time in the cities. It was a brilliant base from where to explore Tuscany. The views from the balcony and all the windows around the house were stunning. It was exactly how we had pictured it and hoped it would be. The 10 minute walk from the villa through the vineyards to San Gusme under a clear blue sky was one of the highlights of our time in Italy. There was everything we needed in the villa, the welcome basket was a lovely gesture and asking us in advance what else we would need on arrival was really appreciated. The way the villa is set out was excellent for the 4 of us staying there – with bedrooms / bathrooms on either side and a choice of whether you wanted to be upstairs or downstairs. Vanessa talking us through how to use everything and leaving instructions was so helpful. The areas in the garden and around the shared pool area allowed us to relax in the sun through the day. We loved spending evenings relaxing on the balcony as the sun faded and sampling local wines, with some candles kindly provided to keep the mosquitoes at bay. We closed the door for the last time with heavy hearts – after a wonderful week in the heart of beautiful Tuscany. Thank you Anna and Vanessa.

About the host

Hosted by Anna Crawford, Arceno Rentals Club

Host profile image
Anna and James Ross found home in Arceno some twenty years ago and have never left this little piece of paradise. Having busy lives in the cosmopolitan cities of London and Milan, they enjoy the serenity and tranquillity that Arceno and Tuscany offer.
As founders of Arceno Rentals Club, born out of their own experience in renting their property as a holiday rental, they aim to make their Guests feel as welcomed and contented in their Tuscan home as they do and enjoy the charms and experiences of the true Tuscan lifestyle.

Why they chose this property

THE ESTATE OF VILLA ARCENO
The estate of Arceno is 1000 hectares of forest, vineyards, olive groves, cypress avenues, dotted with traditional farmhouses 'the Casali', of which, some are enigmatic ruins awaiting restoration.
The 'Villa' of the estate dates from the 16th century with its own chapel, romantic park and lake. Its original owners would have managed the estate directing the workers who once lived in the Casali.
Casanova once a working Casale is now with modern benefits for those who wish to relax and enjoy the stunning views of the Chianti.

What makes this property unique

The region is stuffed with history, art, food and wine. With Italy’s excellent road network, in Tuscany Florence, San Giminiano, le Crete, Pienza, Montalcino, Cortona, Arezzo and in Umbria Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio and Todi are within easy reach for day trips.
Restaurants, wine tours, visits to the nearest towns and hamlets in Tuscany to breath in art and history, sports and more.

Around Arceno, the nearby little towns offer all kind of Italian cooking, from the traditional “trattoria” that offers the most typical Tuscan food to a Michelin starred restaurant.
A favourite restaurant is ‘La Bottega del Trenta’ in Villa a Sesta for a fantastic fine food experience and a warm welcome by Hélène the owner.

While Arceno is blessed by fantastic wines produced on the estate, in the surrounding territory there are some other wine producers whose mantra is “excellency”. A visit to these cellars and vineyards cannot go amiss during a vacation in Tuscany.

During the year the territory offers events whose roots stem from the past. The famous ‘Palio’ horse race is the main event in Siena held twice annually on 2nd July and the 16th August.
Some of the experiences to live in full are in May the “Millemiglia” through Siena, an ancient car racing from north to south of Italy and making a stop in Piazza del Camp, in October the “Eroica”, a cycling race inspired bu the values of a noble sport as interpreted in the past and the “Ecomaratona” a marathon that runs through the vineyards of Arceno.
When visiting Siena around these dates, Arceno Rentals Club can arrange the purchase of tickets, for an ‘unparalleled experience'!

A car or a small van for bigger groups are necessary to travel around and all areas of the estate are reached by ‘strade bianche’, literally, white roads which are unpaved. Although most are public these roads are quiet, allowing walking, cycling and jogging in peace along with horseriding. The area is also popular with cyclists and motorcyclists.
