Three nights in St Ives
We booked our mid-April stay back in November and inventory was already low due to Spring break. Usually, I read all the recent reviews on a property before booking but this one was new and didn’t have any on VRBO. The pictures looked really lovely, especially the views, and parking was available on site,(rare in St Ives), so we booked. I was traveling with my 80 year old mom for a birthday holiday which I informed the property managers of prior to booking. Upon arrival, we were struck with the construction all around us. The connecting unit still had quite a bit of exterior work going on and the house behind was surrounded with scaffolding and the yard was full of construction debris. The real surprise was the trailer (caravan) park directly below the property which was full because of spring break. The pictures make the backyard look quite spacious with an unblemished view of the ocean but this is not the case. We also own a vacation rental and have professional pictures done to show it off to its best advantage but not to mislead renters. The exterior pictures are misleading. I do understand that the construction work around the condo is out of the control of the property managers, but it would have been professional to inform us beforehand and to perhaps even make some sort of allowance for the workers right outside the bedroom windows all day and the heavy equipment going in and out of the driveway. We found Liz Thornton to be flippant, unapologetic and indifferent which was a surprise because she was extremely responsive in every other way leading up to our stay.
As it was, we did end up having a pleasant stay at Godrevy cottage. It was nice to be able to do wash and relax by the wood burning stove. It is new so the appliances and furnishings were clean and modern. It’s a little spartan but very comfortable. The two main bedrooms and baths are down a hardwood staircase which was a little precarious for an 80 year old but we managed. The top floor bedroom is accessed by a carpeted staircase but the bathroom is on the main level.
Higher quality bedding would have increased my review to 4 stars despite our unfortunate interaction with the management and the ugly trailer park. This would be a great rental for a bigger group that had no issue with a 20 minute, hilly walk in to and out of town.
