Rustic Retreat
We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 week stay at the Sugar House at the Old Fort Estate. The setting is gorgeous and the history is fascinating. The grounds were fun to explore, the pool delightful to swim in and read by, and the Sugar House, with its cooling breezes and beautiful views, lovely to come home to each day. The 2 suites were perfect for 2 couples. Quirin and Sarah were very helpful in advance and throughout our stay.

The Sugar Mill is a beautifully designed, airy and pretty unique villa high up overlooking the sea and islands to the East of Bequia. Being high up it gets a very necessary cooling breeze. Bequia had suffered a long drought while we were there, so was less green than normal, but it was still lovely. Quirin was very welcoming and we could see what efforts he is making to maintain the Old Fort and the estate - quite a challenge! Car rental is pretty essential, as though the island is small, it's quite a way down to the lovely beaches and restaurants. But we very much enjoyed being up the hill by ourselves (great views also from the pool) but only 10 minutes drive to beaches etc. And when we momentarily tired of the views, the tortoises in the garden were endlessly fascinating!

I grew up in the Grenadines, primarily on Mount Pleasant, Bequia—an intimate hilltop community steeped in history. Centuries ago, The Old Fort stood as the centrepiece of this area during the French colonisation of the Caribbean. As a child, I watched in awe as my parents and their dedicated team restored the ruins, transforming them into the stunning estate you see today. They managed the property for nearly 40 years, instilling in me a deep appreciation for its history and significance.

Growing up in Bequia had its challenges, particularly in education. I studied through an American correspondence course before commuting daily by ferry to neighbouring St. Vincent for my A-levels. After nearly two decades in the Caribbean, I moved to Europe to broaden my horizons, a journey that proved invaluable for my future in hospitality.

At just 18 years old, I began my apprenticeship at the Kempinski Hotel Four Seasons in Munich. I then worked as a full-time F&B waiter at the Hilton Amsterdam, gaining hands-on experience in world-class hospitality. Two years later, I moved to London to complete a degree in International Marketing and Hospitality Management at London Metropolitan University.

After several enriching years abroad, I returned to the Grenadines—the place I will always call home—and became the director of The Old Fort in 2005. This role allowed me to combine my love of travel, instilled during childhood summers spent visiting family in Europe, with my passion for hospitality. The unique experience of growing up on a picturesque island that draws visitors from diverse backgrounds, coupled with my global travels, has shaped me into the host I am today.

The Old Fort is more than just a destination—it’s a reflection of my family’s journey and our commitment to creating unforgettable experiences for our guests. My parents’ travels inspired them to design a place that meets the highest standards of hospitality, and it is my honour to carry on their legacy.

Why they chose this property

The Sugar Mill House is a remarkable contemporary villa built within the walls of a rare, ancient circular sugar mill—one of only a few remaining in the world today, most of which have sadly fallen into disrepair. The property’s rich history, coupled with its exceptional staff and breathtaking location, makes it a truly unique destination. Set on a grand estate that cascades down several hillsides to the Atlantic Ocean below, the villa boasts a spacious, open layout, offering both elegance and security in an unparalleled setting.

Having celebrated our 46th Christmas Eve here in 2024 (the day they arrived), our deep knowledge of the area and its connections is second to none. The villa’s majestic views, arguably the best on Bequia, are just the beginning of what makes this property so special. With expansive bedrooms and thoughtfully designed spaces, the villa seamlessly blends modern comfort with its storied past. Additional amenities include the opportunity to charter our private 40-foot powerboat, further enhancing your stay. And of course, Bequia itself—one of the most beautiful, unspoiled islands in the Caribbean—adds the final touch to this extraordinary experience.

What makes this property unique

Our property offers a multitude of unique benefits, beginning with the undisturbed environment that creates an extraordinary harmony with nature. The breathtaking views overlooking the estate grounds and the ocean are complemented by various hiking trails and two pristine, unspoiled beaches, all just a short distance away.

The property itself is generously laid out, featuring two majestic suites that provide both luxury and privacy. We take pride in our ability to cater to every guest’s specific needs, offering a wide range of personalized services to ensure a truly unforgettable experience. The expansive gardens, home to numerous species of palms and flowers, add a touch of natural beauty and tranquillity to the estate.

The property’s rich history is another defining feature, with archaeologists recently uncovering a new section within the estate grounds, adding to its historical significance. Bequia, renowned for its untouched beauty, offers an exceptional backdrop to this remarkable property. Guests can explore nearby islands through boat trips, enjoy sailing, eco-tours, hiking, or fishing, with an endless array of activities at their fingertips.

But perhaps the most special aspect is the opportunity for guests to immerse themselves in the true local vibe of Bequia, becoming part of the island’s living history and unique culture during their stay.
