About this property

Peaceful setting and wonderful loch view in the Heart of Argyll

Situated on a farm in a lovely area of rural Argyll with just a short walk to the shores of Loch Awe.

Stable is a spacious open plan self-catering holiday cottage with elegant spiral staircase and full length windows framing a beautiful view and sunsets over Loch Awe.

Argyll with its lochs, hills and mountains to climb is one of the most scenic areas of Scotland and Stable is a good base for exploring Oban, Inveraray, Glencoe, Loch Lomond, mid-Argyll where you’ll find Crinan Canal and historic Kilmartin Glen, and the beautiful peninsula of Kintyre.

Built from a converted farm steading, Barn (slps 2) and Stable are semi-detached and situated next to the farmhouse.

Stable has been given 4 stars by the Scottish Tourist Board.

The kitchen is well equipped with electric hob and oven, microwave and refrigerator/freezer.

There is a washing machine in Stable with a tumble dryer available and outside clothes line close by which guests are welcome to use.

Sleeping up to 4
Bedroom 1: twin (2 x single) or zip-linked double beds
Bedroom 2: twin (2 x single) or zip-linked double beds

The toilet/shower room is upstairs.

Children under 5
This holiday cottage is not recommended for children under 5 years due to the open spiral staircase but if you think this will be acceptable, we are happy to provide a cot and highchair.

Patio & Garden
Overlooking Loch Awe the patio with picnic table, garden bench and stand for a disposable barbecue enjoys afternoon and evening sunshine.

Loch Awe
Loch Awe is 25 miles long and the longest loch in Scotland. Surrounded by forests, farms, hills and mighty Ben Cruachan .

The Farm
Traditional blackface sheep and luing cattle are farmed on 2,000 acres in this beautiful area of Argyll and guests are welcome to walk and explore the farm:
- to fish or enjoy a walk to the loch shore
- to the viewpoint on An Sidhean (fairy/enchanted view) for a picnic and amazing views of Loch Awe
- to old ruined settlements abandoned nearly 150 years ago
- on a nearby forest walk (circular walk coming back via the farm)
- to our many waterfalls. The ‘Wee’ waterfall is less than 5minutes walk from Stable.

Fishing on Loch Awe
Fishing for trout and pike is by permit and these are available online.

Nature and wildlife:
Red squirrels and Pine Marten come to the feeder by Barn, though the Pine Marten are generally night visitors. Red Deer come into the fields in the evening especially during the colder months and they often take a short cut by Barn when returning to the hill in the morning. When travelling home in the evening you will probably see some small Roe Deer by the roadside. During the spring and summer Loch Awe is also home to many Osprey which swoop down to take fish from the loch. Kintail Birds of Prey is nearby.
Eagles, dolphins and porpoises are best seen by joining an organized tour from Oban, Easdale or Crinan.

Exploring Argyll and the west highlands of Scotland:
Some ideas, walks and wonderful scenery within easy reach on a day out:
- Oban and the distillery
- Islands of Mull and Iona (ferry from Oban) & wildlife tours
- Inveraray Castle and old victorian Jail
- Ruined Castles especially Kilchurn, near Dalmally on Loch Awe and Carnasserie Castle near Kilmartin
- majestic Glen Coe which has amazing mountain scenery and the wilderness of Rannoch Moor which you will see enroute, plus the red deer along Glen Etive if you take a little diversion
- the ‘bonny banks’ of Loch Lomond – the little village of Luss is nice
- Kilmartin Glen has standing stones, burial cairns, rock art and a museum
- Crinan Canal (walk along the tow path or hire a bicycle)
- take a tour into the ‘Hallow Mountain’ at Cruachan Hydro Electric Power Station

For children
Inveraray Castle and Jail both have a quiz to hold the interest of young people and for activities Argyll Adventure offers pony trekking and zombie games. Another popular afternoon out is to the Scottish Seal Sanctuary which also has otters and an indoor aquarium.

Cycling: if you bring your own bicycles then the tow path along Crinan Canal is lovely.

Horse Riding: Argyll Adventure near Inveraray offer 1hour and 2 hour treks.

Walking: guests are welcome to explore the farm, and our nearest Munro (mountain over 3,000ft) is Ben Cruachan at the end North end of Loch Awe.

Eating Out: there are many lovely cafes, pubs and restaurants for lunch or homemade cake when out and about exploring Argyll and most guests do opt to enjoy a good lunch or early evening meal before returning to their cottage to relax and enjoy the view.

Wonderful accommodation with a beautiful view

We really enjoyed our stay. The location is quite remote with a 15km single track road to the cottage, but the view over the lake is stunning and the environment is peaceful and quiet. We had deer around the house every evening. The accommodation itself is spacious and clean. Living room is comfortable, good kitchen (but no dishwasher) and bathroom, and comfortable / clean beds.

A really lovely place

Stunning views from the house which is one of the most comfortable we ever booked. Catriona is very friendly, we spent a very good time at Blarghour Farmhouse. Just a detail : perhaps could we find a few things at the check in as salt, pepper, vinegar, pastas... the next supermarket is more than 30 mn from the house

Remote getaway

We were lucky enough to enjoy at gloriously sunny and relaxing week at Blarghour Farm. Our host, Catriona, was really welcoming, friendly and helpful in showing us things to do locally but not intrusive at all. The location is stunning and the weather was warm enough to allow us all to swim in the loch every day and the sun kept the midges away. The accomodation itself is really light and spacious and has everything you need. Highly recommended

A dream location for nature lovers

We booked the cottage (Stables) for 2 weeks and enjoyed every minute of our stay. We will definitely be back. This is a wonderful base for daily hikes or bike rides. Peaceful, quiet - an ideal place for those of you who want to be close to the nature. The hosts (Catriona and Martin) are lovely and very helpful.

Loch Awe-some

Excellent, well equipped property, with stunning views over the loch. All provided information accurate, Catriona very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend for a peaceful getaway. If sea food's your thing there are many quality eateries within an hours drive (Oban 'Green Shack' a must).

Peaceful location

We highly recommend this property, the location is very peaceful & the view from the accommodation is fantastic, overlooking Lock Awe, it didn't matter if the sun was shining or it was raining you could just sit & look at it all day. The accommodation was very clean & spacious, the owners were very friendly & helpful. It was one of those holidays that you never wanted to end, so we will be going back. If you like Scotland you will love this location. We found a great seafood restaurant in Inveraray called Samphire.

Perfect getaway from the rat race.

We had a great time. The accommodation was very well presented, spotlessly clean, and with views to die for. Inveraray is the nearest town with all facilities required including shops and excellent pubs for drink or food. Boat rental for a day on tha loch is a must and available a few miles up the road. All in all one of the best places we have stayed at.

Great holidays in a stunning landscape

We spent two weeks in Catriona´s "Stable" from July to August 2016. If you are looking for a place to enjoy peace and Scotland´s lakes and mountains, this one is the right choice for you. We and our two boys ( 5 and 6 ) had a warm and friendly welcome. The house is equipped with everything you need for self catering. All rooms are very clean, comfortable and homely. From the living room you will have a fantanstic view to Loch Awe. It is a very good starting point for daily trips with your car (Glen Coe, Oban with the ferries to Mull, Inveraray...). We are definitly thinking of coming here again.

Excellent cottage in a stunning setting

We stayed in Stable; it is very well furnished and equipped and was spotlessly clean for our arrival. The views are absolutely amazing (even on rainy days!) and the peace and quiet of the surroundings make it a real 'away from it all' rest from busy lives. Red squirrels came to the garden feeder every morning and red deer were seen most days in the field below the garden. We were welcomed by Catriona on arrival and she made sure that we knew she was close by should we need anything. Highly recommended.

Unbeatable location

The view out over Loch Awe was incredible and the cottage is ideally placed to take advantage. Really hard to sit in the lounge in the evening and not gaze out at beautiful sunset over the loch. Wildlife in abundance - we saw red squirrels, deer and ospreys on a regular basis. Very comfortable accommodation and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

A sensational holiday you will want repeat.

Stunning - 10/10! Facing west in a spectacular position on the shores of beautiful Loch Awe, we have found this holiday gem - Blarghour Farm. The warm welcome to this 4 star luxury accommodation, from the extremely thoughtful & kind hosts, Catriona Martin and Ile made us instantly feel at home. And from the doorstep we have experienced and enjoyed some of the finest scenery Scotland has to offer. From every window at the Stable we have sat & enjoyed sensational sunsets in a changing kaleidoscope of nature's colours. Also this year Red Squirrels&Deer have been regular visitors.Ospreys have been seen flying along the loch&Dippers feeding their young at the nest.Easy walks with cascading waterfalls have been made from the doorstep.Blarghour Farm is also ideally placed to use as a base with wonderful areas within easy reach to visit. These are just a few of our favourites. The world famous Kilmartin Glen-one of Scotland's oldest landscapes with 5000 years of history on show in the Glen's standing stones, and stone circles.Amazing artefacts are also displayed in Kilmartin's award winning museum. And the cafe there must NOT be missed! The town of Oban gives you access to the ferries if you wish to travel out&visit the Islands. The large reduction in ferry charges to Mull&Iona this year has been an unexpected&very welcomed treat!! Travelling up the loch you soon reach the dramatic and spectacular mountain&coastal scenery of Glencoe. Taking the circular route up the coast&back through the Glen(or vice versa)is a truly fantastic journey. And when back in the comfort of the Stable you may,as we have done so often,be coaxed into gazing west across Loch Awe while enjoying a glass of wine and being captivated by your own spectacular sunset.Colours which have to be seen to be believed, can develop&reflect on your loch view outside &stretch across the sky.If you are lucky as we have been, you will catch a sunset with colours that go on for hours. And once the sunset is over the stars light up in all their glory, with no nearby artificial light to steal their show.We highly recommend that you book a holiday, you will not be disappointed. Just be prepared to fall under Blarghour's enchanting spell!

Best choice for the first scotland holidays

It was so lovely and quiet. Catriona and her husband showed us some scottish traditions like hogmanay. There is a great area where you can hike. I also fall in love with the dogs. Someday I'll come back.
