About this property

Restored barn with large pool and mountain stream

Villa Allegra was built in 1676 by the Giovanetti family of Lucca, to process the olives of its olive groves in the foothills of the Monte Pisano. The Villa consists of the 5-bedroomed main house and 3-bedroomed barn. The two properties are completely separate, but share grounds of 3,500 metres and the large, circular pool. Both properties have their own designated alfresco dining area. Another option for outside dining is at a long trestle table next to the swimming pool, which becomes shaded in time for dinner.

Villa Allegra's barn has three double bedrooms (one with twin beds), all with ensuite bathrooms. There is an additional bathroom downstairs, a well-equipped kitchen, cosy living room, private alfresco dining area and use of the gardens (3,500m) and large, circular pool (64m surface area). The property is west-facing and enjoys an abundance of sunlight and breathtaking views of the Pisan Mountains. The property is located on the edge of the medieval village of Sant Andrea di Compito, famous for its mountain walks, fresh spring water and extensive collection of camelia trees.

Just a few metres away from the property, along an olive tree-lined lane, you will find the public tennis courts, with two courts, bookable by the hour at the cultural centre. A 7-minute walk will take you to the nearest pizzeria/restaurant - Tre Tigli. Closer still, at the end of the garden (250m) lies the bar Il Ponte, where you can get an authentic Italian coffee or cappuccino. Lucca is 11km, Florence 55km and Pisa airport is a 38-minute car trip, either via the motorways or through the provincial villages of Pisa.

The twinned village of Pieve di Compito and Sant'Andrea di Compito have a special microclimate that make it cooler in Summer. It is well fed by streams from the Monte Pisano, and on the main road just before you arrive at the house you can fill up cans with fresh spring water at the public fountain. After a scorching day touring the cultural towns of Florence, Sienna or San Gimignano, when you come home you will find lots of leafy, shady spots to retire to. If you still need cooling down, you can take a short trip (5 minutes by car) to the local ice cream cafe, PappaGrappa, which makes its own all-natural ice creams and sorbets.

From Villa Allegra there are various walks you can make, into the Monte Pisano. The area is very popular with hikers as it is still offers a wealth of flora and fauna to explore and enjoy. Alternatively, you can visit the Camillietum Compitese - the Camellia botanical garden of Pieve di Compito, which boasts 1,000 cultivars.

The perfect holiday escape

Very spacious barn with modern facilities. The interior stays nice and cool despite the heat outside. Excellent location with large garden, which makes it perfect for families with children or large groups. There are countless excellent restaurants in the neighbourhood, and it is only a short drive from the city of Lucca, and not much further to Pisa.

6/10 Okay

A lovely place to escape the heat and crowds.

A lovely barn, with spacious accommodation in a quiet and relaxing location. A short walk away, the local restaurant Tre Trigli, provided excellent Pizzas for a bite at the end of a day's sight seeing. Emma the lovely English owner was on hand with advice and help throughout our stay.

I am a British former journalist, enjoying life in Italy while continuing my professional work. I have owned a house in the village since 2004 but only switched to Villa Allegra in April and have been working hard to make it as pleasant as possible for guests.

Why they chose this property

Villa Allegra is in a very advantageous situation, nestling at the feet of olive slopes and with a cooling stream running at the bottom of the garden. The house is wide but narrow and entirely south and west facing, which means it gets lots of sun, yet its thick stone walls keep it cool.

What makes this property unique

Pieve di Compito is in an ideal position for visiting Tuscany's cultural wonders and wineries. It's only 15 minutes from Lucca , an hour from Florence, 40 minutes from Pisa and 1-1/2 hours from Sienna. The beaches are 40 minutes away and the surrounding area offers many country walks and a wide variety of restaurants (most of which require a car to get there). The area is very popular with cyclists and mountain bikes can be rented nearby in Guamo (Via di Sottomonte).
