Cortona, Toscana, Italy

Cortona is just 10 mins in car, a fascinating medieval hill-town perched on slopes of Monte Egidio, overlooks the Valdichiana valley; Lake Trasimeno (20 mins in car).

Visit the Etruscan tombs & MAEC museum, the Museo Diocesano, and the Franciscan “Le Celle” hermitage. Walk down the hill from the Girifalco Fortress past the Sanctuary of S. Margherita through the charming old streets where there is excellent shopping and gelato (icecream).

There are many delightful restaurants in Cortona ad in the surrounding historic towns and villages.

Getting around Cortona, Tuscany and Umbria
You'll definitely need a car. Whilst we are close to towns we are a couple of km off the main road. There is no public transport here but in nearby Camucia or Terontola there is a fantastic rail network linking you with the whole of Italy for excursions to Rome or Florence just an hour away.

TUSCANY: within 100km / 60m
AREZZO (30mins) Our Provincial capital and a charming medieval centre with a lovely cathedral and many antique shops. The Legend of the True Cross frescos, masterpiece of Piero della Francesca are in the Basilica of San Francesco. Arezzo was also the birthplace of painter, architect and biographer Giorgio Vasari who gave his name to the elegant portico on Arezzo’s Piazza Grande.
MONTEPULCIANO (30mins) One of the best-preserved hill towns of Italy. Wine & Cooking of this town are well known all over the world. Much to see. Great visit. Taste the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
PIENZA (45mins) Overlooks the Val D’Orcia. It was the birthplace of Pope Pius II Piccolomini who endeavoured to create an “ideal city” of the tiny town of Corsignano. There are many fine buildings and breath-taking views. The English Patient was filmed here. Pienza features fun boutiques and several shops selling the typical Pecorino cheese.
MONTALCINO (1hr) A Medieval settlement in enchanting natural landscape. Montalcino is all about the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine which can be sampled in the numerous wine bars or nearby wineries. The fortress has a wine shop too and magnificent views from its ramparts
SIENA (45mins) Exquisite Gothic walled city – perfectly preserved since it was never damaged in the 2WW. Small, manageable and pedestrian; pop.50,000. Duomo: see cathedral-library frescoes by Pinturicchio. Campo Square is the place to have coffee and people watch and imagine the Palio race taking place. Enoteca - located in the restored Medici Fortezza; stocks 1000 different wines. You can taste or buy at reasonable prices. Parking in Siena: the best place for 95% occasions is the Fortezza or Stadio - there is nearly always a space. There is also parking San Francesco with escalators into town. It is not easy to find free street parking. Beware of illegal parking.
FLORENCE (1hr 15 minutes) Capital city of the Region of Tuscany and jewel of the Italian Renaissance. We strongly suggest booking the major museums in advance. Going by train saves the problem of parking and is far less stressful and tiring in our opinion. You can park at one of the Cortona train stations and come back in the evening.

UMBRIA: within 100km / 60m
CASTIGLIONE DEL LAGO (25mins) The town of Castiglione del Lago is a large balcony overlooking Lake Trasimeno. It retains a beautiful historic centre within 12th-century medieval walls. From its Rocca, the view captures the entire lake with its islands, the surrounding hills and the profile of the towns that dominate the landscape, from Cortona to Panicale. From Castiglione del Lago there is a cycle-pedestrian path that enables visitors to circumnavigate Lake Trasimeno, some sixty kilometres long.
LAKE TRASIMENO (15mins) Fourth largest lake in Italy. Great day out, with or without children. Pretty towns all around with cafes, beaches, boating, trips to the islands. PASSIGNANO SUL TRASIMENO (20mins) is a charming lakeside town – the spot for Sunday ‘passeggiata’ or to rent a boat - and features several good restaurants specialising in both lake and sea fish.
PERUGIA (45mins) Significant traces of the city’s Etruscan past are visible and there are a number of important historical places to visit. Corso Vanucci offers magnificent stores and historical buildings & the Pinacoteca, Umbrian National art gallery. By car it is best to park at the bottom of the city in the Piazza Partigiani parking garage and go up the moving staircase to the Centre – emerging from inside the old “Rocca Paolina” Fortress. Central Perugia itself is largely impossible to park in.
ASSISI (45mins) Umbria’s best-known city and home to Saint Francis of Assisi & Saint Claire. One of the highest expressions of religious vitality of the region is to be found in the Basilica of San Francesco, which houses the body of the saint and contains a variety of priceless frescoes (Giotto, Cimabue, Lorenzetti, etc.). Pay car parks located all around the walls.
GUBBIO (1hr) High and off the beaten track, it has the most medieval appearance of the Umbrian towns. Well preserved buildings in pink limestone; spectacular countryside all around. Experience the views from the funicular to S.Ubaldo from which you can walk into the hills behind or down into the centre. To get there take the scenic drive via the hamlet of Mercatale and the Umbrian town of Umbertide.
ORVIETO (1hr) take the A1 south to get there. Ancient Etruscan hill town high up on a tufa rock plateau; superb Gothic cathedral & square, it is one of the oldest towns in Italy, famous for its white wines with lots of enjoyable narrow streets to explore, underground Etruscan ‘Ipogei’ or underground tombs. Return via the scenic route stopping at TODI (1hr) ancient hill town and perhaps DERUTA (1hr) for its world famous, prized, colourful majolica pottery.
TORGIANO (1hr) is small but is host to two marvellous museums: - the Museo del Vino and the Museo dell'Olio. Both are the private collections of the Lungarotti winemaking family, who are responsible for having put Umbrian wine on the map. Wine tasting is possible next door to the wine museum!
SPELLO (1hr) This ancient Roman spa town still features its Roman gates and is home to some splendid works by Pinturicchio (student of Perugino) in the Collegiata of Santa Maria Maggiore. Every year at Pentecost there is the ‘Spello in Fiore’ competition in town for the most beautiful display of flowers along the narrow streets, windows and balconies making this a charming spot to stop and wander.

Truly Wonderful Experience with Fantastic Hosts

Molino di Bordone is simply magnificent. We. along with two other couples, stayed in Stalla Rustica (3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms) for a week in mid-May 2018. We could not have dreamed of a more wonderful experience. Caroline Nobile and her husband, along with son Antonio and chef Simona, provided a most generous, supportive, and delicious stay. All of them went out of their way to be helpful, including providing help with train reservations, Mass times at "Le Celle" (a monastery founded by St. Francis just outside of Cortona), and immediately addressing any concerns. Simona prepared two absolutely delicious meals for us, including salad with fresh ingedients from their garden, which we shared in the family area. The setting is gorgeous, access to main sights is easy (10 minutes to Cortona, an hour or so to Montepulciano, Montalcino, Florence, Assisi, and Orvieto), all the essentials (groceries, etc.) are nearby. The accommodations are great, and are quiet and peaceful. All of us are experienced travelers, so we have encountered many different types of accommodations. All of us are in agreement that, if anything, the descriptions provided online actually understate how terrific Molino really is. And, for an extra attraction, even though the villa is officially in Tuscany, you can, in fact, see Umbria from the property. An additional bonus is that the family operates a tour company, so can provide wine tasting and other excellent excursions. If you are seeking the ultimate experience in Tuscany/Umbria, look no further and book Molino di Bordone as quickly as your fingers will allow.

What a wonderful place...

Friendly owners, great property and facilities, wonderful location...idea for families and couples alike. The hosts pizza evening (cooked in 400+ year old oven) was a real highlight. Local towns such as Catona, Siena and Lake Tresimino are a delight and all within driving distance. We'll definitely be back...

Perfect location and wonderful host!

To provide context this was our first visit to Italy and we stayed at HomeAway properties in Rome, Amalfi and here near Cortona. Our family loved this property the most!!! Antonio was super helpful getting us settled and answering questions. The villa is as pretty as the picture and the surrounding countryside is simply stunning! We stayed for 4 days visiting Assisi, the town of Cortona and taking road trips through the beautiful countryside. Antonios recommendations for pretty side roads were spot on and were better than the guidebooks. To top off the trip Antonio took my husband and son to a nearby golf course. They had a blast! My 23 year old son had a road bike delivered and enjoyed biking up and down the hills around Cortona. We stayed in the Stalla Rustica unit. I spent every morning and evening just taking peaceful walks around the villa. We bought food at the Simply market in the nearby small town of Pergo but ate dinner most nights in one of the wonderful Cortona restaurants. The shower had great pressure and tons of hot water. This was not the case in our other locations. I wish we could have come a little later to enjoy their pool and to see more of their amazing gardens in bloom. But as Antonio says, Arrivederci, which means "see you again"!

Il Molino di bordone - Tuscany

Our whole family vacationed at Il Molino for the BEST 2 weeks ever~! there were 13 of us enjoying Carloine & Pino's villa, grounds, surrounding hill towns, wine tours and dinning extravaganzas! Il Molino is the perfect spot to rest, relax, enjoy the sun, pool, games (on extensive grass fields surrounding the villa- we held two family soccer games which of course adults lost one of them!). We made this our "base camp" taking side trips to Sienna, Asti, Multapulchino, and of course, Cortona. A lake close by (15 minutes) provided the kids plenty of water options from boating to diving, volly ball, etc. Lots of wine tasting, dinning out in local restaurants and Caroline arranged for a night of cooking lessons with Luka...what an experience to have 14 chefs in one kitchen...with plenty of elbow room. we have a great picture of the evening which will no doubt be our 2016 Christmas picture. The accommodations are clean, neat, and comfortable. Caroline and Pino provided all the help you could ask for...directions, recommendations, translations and even a guide to the best morning coffee gathering in town.

Our second home

Our 4th visit to Molino di Bordone and as always 10/10 for everything. Caroline and Pino are the perfect hosts and make sure everything is perfect. The gardens are even more established since our first visit, each time there is something new. Can't imagine a trip to Italy without a few days (or longer) here!

Perfect villa in Tuscany

Our only regret is that we only stayed a week. All previous reviews are totally accurate: the owners, Carolina and Pino were delightful to meet and a wealth of knowledge about the area. The villa was roomy, spotless, perfectly furnished, and perfectly equipped with everything you might need. The location is perfect for day trips to Cortona, Lake Trasimeno, San Gimignano, Assisi, vineyard tours in Montepulciano . A very nice well-stocked large grocery store is conveniently located in Camucia, just a few minutes away by car. The local café is walking distance and delightful for an afternoon capuccino. There are several good restaurants close by in Cortona (don't miss Trattoria La Grotta). We would go back for another -lomger- visit in a heartbeat!!

Cortona country villa

Lovely relaxed stay and a short distance from Cortona. The grounds are cared for regularly and with an eye for beauty. The pool was great. We were greeted each morning by the the loyal housecat and each eve by two friendly dogs.If I were to make one suggestion, it would be to provide brighter lighting in the apt. since windows in stone houses are tiny.

Awesome!

This was truly an amazing place to spend 5 days during our holiday to Italy and Greece. It was very quiet and relaxing, and the Molinello suite was just what we needed between the chaos of Venice and Athens! Pino and Caroline were very accommodating and gave us lots of suggestions for places to see. Loved the fortress in Castiglione de Lago, a marvelous birthday dinner at Laconda del Molino, and Cortona on a Sunday morning, so got to visit the Duomo, Santa Margarherita, and San Francesco during worship! Wow on all 3! Spent several afternoons reading books by the pool. Our stay couldn't have been better and we hope to make it back some day!

A small paradise in the Tuscany

What a beautiful place to stay! Antonio, Caroline and Pino are the perfect hosts. The Torre suite appartment is the perfect place for two people to stay for a while. What a beautiful garden and the luxury of a nide swimming pool. And we were so lucky to meet the parents of Caroline and the mother of Pino, all so nice people. We hoghly recommend this property to our friends and relatives.

Simply perfect!

I chose this property to spend Christmas with family and friends, and it was just an amazing experience! We stayed at Stalla Rustica and everything you can think of was there and/or readily accessible. Caroline and Pino, the property owners, are very nice and charming and they definitely contributed in making the staying simply perfect! The fireplace in the living room made kept the Christmas spirit alive and although weather was not the best, we all said our goodbyes, knowing that we managed to build memories that will last a lifetime. Upon our arrival the property was extremely clean and well taken care of. The convenience of a dishwasher and a washer/dryer was very much appreciated. The owners know the area extremely well and are able to address any concern and give any suggestion regarding food, locations and any other needs. Once again, thanks Caroline, Pino and Antonio for being excellent hosts and loving people and for making the whole process (from reservation to check out) a wonderful experience. Happy New Year to you all. Daniele

Excellent Tuscany Villa

We loved our stay at Molino Di Bordone. We were 3 couples visiting Italy and stayed in the Stalla Rustica Villa. The property is breathtaking, Pino & Caroline have done such a wonderful job with restoring and maintaining this fabulous villa and property. It was peaceful, relaxing, close to everything and very comfortable. We didn't want to leave!! The Tuscany area has so many places to visit, you could stay for a very long time. One day we hope to return and will definitely stay here again. Thanks again for making our trip memorable. Donna, Joe, Denise, Mike, Debbie & Matt

great for families

This lovely Tuscan farmhouse proved perfect for our family holiday.Good quiet location surrounded by hills but close to well stocked local shop. The property is very spacious .comfortable and well equiped with lots of thoughtful touches, such as kids games, maps, books and even washing powder for the machine. The private garden area is great for childrens play and BBQs but they were able to enjoy the freedom of the larger area with swings, trampoline, croquet and games of football too.The swimming pool was also well maintained with comfortable sunloungers and umbrellas. The owners and their family were very friendly and helpful and we would love to return one day !

Wonderful! Couldn't have asked for more!

Where do we begin? From the moment we pulled up at Molino Di Bordone we knew we were in for a treat! There were 7 of us, 4 adults 3 children and we stayed in the Stalla Rustica. We had 3 large bedrooms, plenty of room. 3 bathrooms and a full kitchen with everything we needed. We also had a very large living room to relax in after a long day of touring around all the wonderful cities located within and hour of Molino Di Bordone. Everything was decorated with wonderful rustic taste. My kids loved coming back everyday to blow of some energy on the trampoline and run around all the beautiful gardens and play on the swings. We spent time lounging around the gardens drinking wine and talking about what we done and seen all day. We truly loved the property and cannot wait to return. Caroline and Pino were so wonderful, giving us directions to restaurants and places to go see. They were there to help us with anything we needed. We cannot thank you enough for allowing us to have the pleasure of staying in your beautiful home! Thank you again for everything! The Hoskins Family

Molino Di Bordone a Tuscan Dream

This Beautiful Renovated Farm house and Mill was our holiday home this summer for two glorious week. I came to Tuscany on holidays with my entire extended family as we love being together and also adore Italy. On our arrival we were greeted by Pino and Caroline with Tuscan wine and canapes and smiles. All our questions were answered about our chosen location. We were more than satisfied and excited with the Villa. I took the Torres Suite,...the tower and felt very comfortable in the elegant large suite with ensuite bathroom and bath. The family divided to the other large apartments and so began our adventure. We had ample room to meet together and dine and BBQ and talk, laugh and sing. We spent fabulous days at the pool and strolling about the villa grounds and olive grove together, and painting with the children. Molino Di Bordone is so well located we also toured together and saw much of Tuscany, we travelled to Sienna, Moltapalcino, Molaticino, Florence, Pienza and other glorious towns and hilltop towns. I recommend a trip to Assisi with it's 3 No. beautiful Bascilicas and quaint shops and cafes. Florence is spectacular and Sienna very beautiful. The days at the Villa and touring were a dream and the hospitality lent to us by Pino and Caroline, Alexandro Marianna and Antonio their children, was superb. I remember the laughter, the chat, the cookery course we all did together and most of all the setting, hills, sunflowers, blue skies and the peace of Tuscany. I will be back and hopefully with my entire family too, all 14 men women and children, the best in Ireland. From Linda thank you Pino and Caroline.

Stalla Rustica 2009

We rented this property to suit the different needs of our family, in particular energetic son (aged 10) and older parents (80+) with limited mobility. Overall, it worked pretty well. The location is superb with fabulous views to the rolling hills, olive groves and fields of sunflowers. We were close enough to Cortona for a night out and there is a small bar, cafe and shop very nearby. Lots of other interesting places to visit are within an hours drive. Pino and Caroline are very welcoming and helpful but not intrusive. The property and grounds are lovely and well maintained with a good sized pool where my son spent most of the holiday along with the other children staying on site and Pino and Caroline's children giving tired husband plenty of time to relax and read. There are lots of lovely animals on site including the two dogs Bianca and Molly who made us feel very at home! The apartment itself is very large and has its own private walled garden area and barbecue surrounded by lavender, rosemary and bay trees. For parents, this was particularly welcome as they did not want to sit by the pool and enjoyed the privacy of a room with french doors which opened onto the garden so that they could have a quiet read or nap whenever they wanted. My mother-in-law is almost wheelchair bound and this arrangement worked very well as they did not have to move far to get to the outdoor eating table. She also very much enjoyed the opportunity to sketch the fabulous views. Unfortunately, this room is down 3 very steep internal steps which meant that the main sitting room and kitchen of the appartment were inaccessible for her. It is a great shame that the bedroom most suited to a person of limited mobility has a bath and not a walk in shower. With this small change and ramps, the apartment would be very well suited for those who cannnot walk too far or manage steps. It is not the best place for a wheelchair as the main drives are gravel and there are steps to get from them to the apartment itself. Overall, the apartment is fitted to a good standard with a lovely rustic feel. The bedrooms are comfortable with three ensuite bathrooms. We did feel the kitchen was very basic though as we like to cook and some equipment was missing, old or worn out. Even so, we had a fabulous holiday. It is a wonderful location and a very beautiful property. Many thanks to Caroline and Pino for a lovely time and making us feel so at home. We hope to come back again soon!

A piece of heaven in the valley

Il Molino is a great place for putting up your feet for a few days or a week or a month. The apartment we stayed in was beautifully turned out, spacious and with all the modern comforts. Although in the valley, the views are spectacular and the grounds are beautifully landscaped with lots of little spots in which to escape. The pool and pool terrace are great for those scorching summer days. The pictures on the web do not do this place justice at all. Our hosts Caroline and Pino were wonderful and had lots of helpful info. Il Moligno is especially well suited to families. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend this villa to all our friends. Booking was hassle-free by email.

Incredible location & amenities, Gracious hosts

We stayed here for 3 nights with our extended family (9 of us) in June. The location is amazing - in the country but close enough to make sightseeing day trips - we went to Cortona one day and Florence the other. The apartments have been beautifully designed with exquisite finishes; quality furnishings; all the amenities you could desire and were immaculately clean. We loved the "farm setting" including the friendly family pets - (who, by the way, were not allowed inside). Pino and Caroline were very generous, kind, friendly and full of helpful information during our stay as well as beforehand. Our only complaint was that it was far too short of a stay. It was definitely the highlight of our month long tour of Europe! We hope we can come back someday soon and spend a week or two!

Why they chose this property

When we stood in the driveway we knew it was right for us. At the time it was still a ruin and had been empty for over 30 years ! We were drawn by the peacefulness of the place. There were no roads nearby making it safe for the children to play freely.

What makes this property unique

360 degree views of wooded hills, vineyards, olive groves, lake and stream running through.
A lovely big swimming pool with loungers and grassy areas for sunbathing and reading.
For families with children there are soccer & volley ball nets, swings and climbing frame, bikes of various sizes and a trampoline, used not just for jumping but also star gazing at night - we have no light pollution. We are walking distance (1km) from 2 coffee bars, food market, 2 restaurants, pizzeria, beauty salon, hairdressers, hardware store, clothing shop. We are only minutes from the historic town of Cortona and yet immersed in tranquility.
You can walk, run or bike for miles and not need to touch the asphalt.
