GLORIOUS BEYNAC VILLA (POOL!) RIVER, CHATEAUX VIEWS - WALK TO RESTAURANTS, SHOPS

OUR HOME
A gorgeous detached 3 bedroom house (sleeps 7) with private pool & wonderful views located in the Dordogne’s most beautiful village, Beynac-Et-Cazenac.

Everything you need is right on your doorstep. Gourmet restaurants. Riverside cafés & bars. A boulangerie. A grocery store. A magnificent château. A farmer’s market. Your own private pool. It’s all right here, nestled on one of the loveliest bends of the Dordogne river.

Search #Beynac on Instagram to see the everyday reality!

You can do it all here and leave your car in the garage for the week! Or you could use it as your holiday base to explore the region. The ‘must see’ medieval town of Sarlat. The prehistoric cave paintings at Lascaux. The Michelin-starred restaurants of Trémolat. There's the walled medieval village (also known as a ‘bastide’) village of Domme. The legendary vineyards of Bergerac, Bordeaux and St Emilion. All this and more are within easy driving distance!

ACTIVITIES
For those in need of relaxation, we recommend lazily drifting down the Dordogne in your own canoe. Discover lush green pastures perfect for picnics. Stop off for wild swimming from riverside beaches. And for the more active, there’s cycling, walking, kayaking, tours of the castle, even hot air ballooning – all just a short stroll away.

In nearby towns like Sarlat (less than a 15-minute drive away) culture vultures and fans of gastronomy will enjoy art exhibitions, street theatre, music and food festivals, firework displays and outdoor dining in award-winning restaurants. There truly is something for everyone, whatever their age, whatever the season.

THE PROPERTY
L'Ancienne Poste (The Old Post Office) is an airy, light and spacious traditional honey-coloured stone house. The main entrance to our home uses the original Post Office doorway and leads directly into the open plan living, dining and kitchen area.

The house has 2 master ensuite bedrooms (both have shower rooms along with a basin and toilet in each) and 1 twin ensuite bedroom (with a shower over the bath, as well as a toilet and a basin) – sleeping 7 in total.

All 3 bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms. Like the open plan living area, all bedrooms have panoramic views over the Dordogne river and towards the surrounding 4 châteaux of Castelnaud, Fayrac, Marqueyssac & Lacoste.

There is a lovely sunny south-facing terrace next to the kitchen with magnificent Dordogne river & châteaux views. There is a table & chairs for sunny al fresco breakfasts, afternoon glasses of wine, or shaded evening meals overlooking stunning scenery and with beautiful sunsets.

The Garden Bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, two single beds & medieval stone archway with French doors opening onto the south-facing garden.

The Balcony Bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, a king-size bed & double French doors giving panoramic views of the valley below.

The Vaulted Bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, a king-size bed as well as an antique ‘sleigh’ bed. It also has a beautiful vaulted beamed ceiling along with a ceiling fan.

There is a private pool with sun decking and a shaded flower-covered seating area. There are ample sun loungers & chairs.

The whole house is over 4 levels and there is private parking (double width garage) right next to the house.

THE LOCAL AREA
Beynac-et-Cazenac has been selected as one of the ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’ (‘the most beautiful villages of France’). The stunningly romantic village, which rises dramatically from the valley floor and was once the home of Richard the Lionheart, will enchant and captivate you at every turn, from its narrow medieval streets lined with soft honey-coloured stone houses to its shops, art galleries and restaurants, not to mention its magnificent Château, perched high atop the cliff, majestically watching over the Dordogne valley since 1150 AD.

The Château de Beynac is the scenic castle of your childhood fantasies. Walt Disney himself would have struggled to imagine it. The village and its castle has been the setting for a raft of movies, including the classic ‘Chocolat’, the romance ‘Ever After’ and ‎Luc Besson’s epic ‘Joan of Arc.’

The Dordogne offers everything that travellers head to France for: beautiful châteaux, traditional French gastronomy, a bucolic landscape of vineyards, forests and rivers. Picturesque fortified villages, such as Beynac, La Roque-Gageac and Eymet, plus charming towns such as Bergerac, Brantôme, Bourdeilles and Ribérac.

LOCAL CULTURE & GASTRONOMY
No part of France is so impassioned by its culinary heritage as the deeply gourmet idyll of the Dordogne in the rural south-west. Dining has its soul around the kitchen table & the best gastronomic experiences remain traditional feasts lasting several hours. Duck is the staple. Consider magret de canard (duck breast) or confit de canard (slow-cooked duck confit). Duck or goose liver is fattened to become foie gras, served raw and thinly sliced, pan-fried and warm, or with toasts as a pâté. It's said that the local walnuts date back over 17,000 years. There's even a local museum dedicated to them! Fresh black truffles woo food lovers from mid-December to March.

People travel to the Dordogne to see artwork created before the dawn of civilization, but they end up feeling like you've touched down in the most civilized place on earth.

Incredible Stone House Perched over Dordogne River

The Ancienne Poste is a lovingly resored stone home perched over the Dorgogne River. On most mornngs and at sunset, we watched the hot air balloons flying over the valley. The home is well equipped with everything required for a comfortable stay, including a terrace and outdoor grill for dining al fresco and a small pool for cooling off at the end of a hot summer day. Although there is no air conditioning, the house was cool at night with the windows open. As noted in the listing, the house is located in a medieval village and you need to be prepared to walk up a steep incline to get there. Although parking is available near the house, it is challenging because of the very narrow roadway. Like many other reviewers, I would recommend parking below in the village car parks. My family thoroughly enjoyed this very special place and highly recommend it!

Straight out of a Fairy Tale

We stayed at the Post Office for four days with our two adult daughters. Everytime we looked out of our windows we could not believe the breath taking views from this house. The house was beautiful and comfortable and the charming neighbor and his little cat was a joy to say hello to each morning. It was warm when we stayed but as other guests mentioned we were very comfortable with the windows open and the ceiling fans on in the bedrooms. The basement bedroom is a little musty smelling- completely understandable, this is a stone medieval house but if you have asthma or other breathing conditions stay in one of the other rooms. We loved this village and this is one of the best houses on site. In fact often if we had the front gate open tourists would start to enter thinking it was on display. As several other guests mentioned though this a steep and hard walk to get up to the house from the village but it is well earned with the views. We had a rental car and after tucking in the side mirrors and our lovely neighbor encouraging us we made it to the parking spot by the house. After the first time my husband had no issue coming and going but it is not for the faint of heart or spatially challenged. It very narrow, very steep and you have to navigate the tourists also trying to walk on the road. The host was responsive and was so kind in allowing us a late check out because she did not have an immediate reservation. We wished we could have stayed longer!

Perfect location in a perfect location

This property is located pretty much in the middle of Dordogne in a most charming village. That means many sights are an easy drive away- that is if you ever want to leave Beynac et Cazenac! The sunsets from the terrace are stupendous and the house is well stocked for your needs. However, as in most rentals, check the house before heading to the market or supermarket as you never know what might or might not be there. The narrow road up to the garage is a challenge, but not impossible. Exiting the garage is a challenge with many see saws, but with a companion to guide you, you can do it fairly quickly. It is worth it to avoid trudging up from the car park in the village. I can't speak for high season, but in autumn the surroundings are quiet- no barking dogs or loud neighbors. The property manager is most helpful and provided very clear instructions for check in and check out. If you speak French, you can learn a lot about the village from the neighbor who is most happy to talk!

Lovely, but difficult.

It was a beautiful place with beautiful views of the river and valley, but each bedroom was on a different floor with steep staircases. None were especially clean, they lacked amenities such as extra toilet paper, soap, very little light (light bulbs out). The rooms, including the kitchen, were not provided with extra bags for garbage. Upon arrival the clothes dryer door was broken, but upon our arrival we called Sabine who sent Christoph to assist. He instructed us how to use dryer but was unable to repair same. Whenever we attempted to reach Sabine, she was very slow to respond & gave the impression that we were a bother. At one point claiming that she had left additional garbage bags at gate, but none were found. Our suggestion is that you really need a new management company, your current one prevents us from recommending your place which is a shame, as it is lovely place. *Also, we think there should be a warning that the area and the facility, though both beautiful, are difficult for senior citizens to navigate.

Village house on the Dordogne

Three of us spent two lovely weeks here in July 2019. This is a well maintained home perfectly situated in beautiful Beynac--overlooking the Dordogne and below the castle--and is perfect for touring the Perigord Noir. Other than loading and unloading figure that you will leave your car in the parking lot by the river--the steep cobbled alley up to the house is picturesque in the extreme but too much to handle, even in a small car, on a routine basis, and the river lot is very convenient and a bargain at 13 euros a week. Fellow Americans should not be concerned about the lack of air conditioning--we were there in a three-day, 105 degree heatwave and found that the ceiling fans and breezes off the river kept the house comfortable--and the pool was very welcome. The owners and local manager were very responsive, and the owners provide detailed instructions and advice for the area that were very helpful. Among local activities we recommend a Bergerac wine tasting tour with Max at Duck & Truffle, a cooking class with Ian at Le Chevrefeuille, dinner at the night markets at Audrix and St. Cyprien, and the Tuesday morning market at Le Bugue--all within an easy drive of the house. Two restaurants located within two minutes of the house, La Terrasse du Chateau and La Petite Tonnelle are both wonderful (book in advance on The Fork). Don't go without first reading a few of Martin Walker's Bruno novels--they are a great introduction to the area.

Great stay!

Four of us stayed at "The old post office" in late April. It was magical! Liz and Matt could not have been more gracious. We did have a couple of "hiccups " ( a couple of them self- inflicted) and they were promptly and efficiently dealt with. The detailed information about the property, town and local events provided by Liz and Matt could not have been more helpful. The village itself is spectacular, although be prepared for the steep access. We all are in our mid-60's to early 70's and in pretty good shape but usually had to stop once or twice on our way home. One of the services suggested by Liz and Matt was a car service, Taxi a la Carte. We engaged them to take us back and forth to a cooking class in nearby St. Cyprian ( wine was involved) and for a winery tour. They did a great job at a very reasonable fee. We had dinner at La Petite Tonnelle twice. It was very good and very reasonably priced. We had no intention of going on a balloon flight, but after seeing the balloons float by every morning and evening we decided to do it. It was expensive but well worth it. There are still a lot of places that we want to see in the world, but if we ever have the chance to return to " our home" in Beynac, we certainly will.

Amazing views - Great house

Second time staying in this house and hope to do it again. Wonderful location. Lovely house with open floor plan on main floor, bright, airy. Window seats overlooking the Dordogne and several chateaux. Narrow street up to the house so rent a slim car. Great base from which to see the beautiful Perigord Noir.

Awesome home; mesmerizing views; gracious hosts.

It is rare that I feel at home in places other than the place that is officially my home address. This remarkable home invited me into that glorious state with its stunning views of gorgeous countrysides, an authentic setting in a deliciously cozy village, and extraordinarily gracious hosts that tended to every detail. I felt supremely at home in the embrace of this magnificent setting. The dance of the hot air balloons each night along the Dordogne River added to the dreamlike atmosphere that gently held and cared for me. Be prepared to be pampered by the Dordogne, Beynac and this fabulous home.

Absolutely outstanding property!!

I can honestly say that what you see is what you get : magnificent views, awesome location, spotlessly clean, very well maintained, and fabulous facilities. My sister and I stayed a week here and were so impressed with everything, there was nothing we didn't like!!! We could cook and eat in, or take a short stroll to one of the many restaurants in the village. We were within a short driving distance of many wonderful places to visit. The service we received from the owners was outstanding, from the pre arrival information, to the instructions on how to get to the property, hints and tips on what to see and support while we stayed in the property. Truly wonderful. I can highly recommend staying here and given the opportunity I would stay here again.

Great stone house that's very well appointed and in fabulous location

This was our second stay at the Ancient Poste and we love everything about staying here. First of all the town is an authentic fortress town that is not commercialized. Up until last year the castle owner's lived in the fortified castle and there have been significant upgrades to this and the surrounding castles since we last visited in 2015. So, touring the castles are well worth while. This home is located close to so many great towns and you will never get bored or wonder what to do. If you are a foodie be sure and plan time to go to Chateau Treyne as the service, wine and food are superb. It's a 45 minute drive, but the home owner referred us to a Tesla taxi driver that we've used the past two visits. He speaks English and French very well and also has a tour service. Well worth the money when drinking and planning travel on back country roads. This year we ended up with a Nissan Juke as our rental car and it fit up the narrow road to the homes dedicated parking. Make sure you get a car that will fit up the narrow road to the garage since it makes life very convenient and is fun to navigate. The previous time we had an Audi A3 and that was perfect. Read my prior review from October 2015 for many details and I'll repeat a few here. The home has a great view and we enjoyed evenings on the terrace pictured in the ad. The light changes throughout the day and the sunsets are spectacular. And in October the sun sets right over the river and makes for incredible photographs. From the house you can see two other castles and one chateau across the river. The kitchen is modern, well appointed and handsome. The furniture is very comfortable and it's nice to have a brown leather couch instead of the customary red velvet in so many French homes. There's a wood burning stove in the living room and the television selections are entertaining enough if you want some no brain time. The bedrooms are large and all three have en suite facilities. When you first arrive come in and then go upstairs to the hallway door. Open that and it's a direct feed to bring your luggage into the home. There's a new washer in the basement and a drying rack the kitchen has a dishwasher. In summary, this home is very comfortable, in a great location, very well maintained and the owner's have taken time to provide the perfect vacation home. You cannot go wrong with this rental and even after 2 visits we were still discovering more things to do.

The pictures do not lie!

Gorgeous house in a gorgeous place. Beynac is a perfect base for exploring the Dordogne, and this house is placed perfectly in Beynac. Three very separate bedrooms with ensuite baths ( we were a couple and two singles and it worked perfectly). Nice (compact) kitchen and comfortable "great room." We ate dinner on the patio every night - a different lovely sunset over the river every night. Loved the bakery down the hill and "La Petit Tonelle" restaurant a few minutes away. Great local wines at the shop at the bottom of the hill. Parking in the town lots was easy (but you have to get your own permit at the Mairie (about 13 Euros for the week) and it's only open during the week. We are four fit seniors and the climb to the house was fine, but challenging. We did the drive up the hill to drop off bags (in an Audi A4 wagon), but decided it was too nerve-wracking to do it when we left. Getting rolling bags down to the parking lot was relatively easy. In sum, a lovely week in a lovely house!

About the host

Hosted by Liz and Matt

Host profile image
Having spent time travelling all over France, we fell in love with the Dordogne’s unique charm and its life of simple pleasures: its food, local markets, festivals and fêtes, all framed by a gentle landscape of green rolling hills, cool clean rivers, and pretty honey-coloured villages.

Why they chose this property

Working in big cities, it was always our dream to have a home somewhere tranquil - somewhere we could see the stars and hear the birds of an evening, but that also had the good life right its doorstep (with no need to drive to just to get bread, a glass of wine or a meal out). It was also important for us to find a place where we could feel part of the local community and to see some familiar, welcoming faces. A place we could return to time and time again without worry.

When we discovered Beynac, we knew it was that place. So when the opportunity came up to buy L'Ancienne Poste, we had to take it.

What makes this property unique

To us it is a special, historic house that offers a blend of peace and pleasure. It's where we go to turn off from the noise, spend time with our children, close friends and family, whilst still having enough to do and enjoy so no-one is ever bored.

Like our guests, we always leave wanting to come back!
