Old Kielder Castle Cottage lies in the prettiest part of the village of Kielder, directly opposite the castle, which can be admired from the large enclosed garden. Visitors to Kielder village and surrounding area are spoilt for choice, as the area is a paradise for mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, fishermen and water enthusiasts. It is ideally located for stargazers and photographers, as this semi-detached holiday cottage is close to the Kielder Observatory. The castle houses a visitor centre, with a licensed café featuring a webcam to capture the ospreys and wildlife, and also holds varied exhibitions throughout the seasons.
The cottage has been sympathetically restored from a 1775 stable for the castle, into a contemporary cottage, which is ideal for couples or small families. Relax in the large bath after a day’s cycling or walking, or curl up on the comfy sofa and watch a film in front of the cosy wood burner. The rear area has a pretty tiered patio area for extra privacy to relax and unwind. The open beams, underfloor heated stone floors and wood burner all help to retain the character of the cottage.
Kielder is set in the Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park, the largest expanse of dark sky in Europe, perfect for astronomers. The surrounding parks all have something to offer visitors. There is a hop on/off ferry which takes you all around the water to admire the stunning scenery with a visitor centre, bird of prey centre and bar with picnic tables along the front.
The local pub and licensed café are only a short walk away, which means you can leave your car behind and enjoy a quiet drink with friends. This property is within a great location for exploring the abundance of visitor attractions in what is reputedly the friendliest and least inhabited county in England. Hadrian’s Wall and the Northumberland Heritage Coast (Alnwick Castle only 50 miles) make great days out and are easily drivable. The Kielder Winter Wonderland from mid-November to Christmas is a fantastic experience for families of all ages (must pre book). Marathons and bike runs are held throughout the year, making the cottage a welcoming base for your stay in Kielder. Shop ¼ mile, pub 300 yards, café 200 yards.

Despite coronavirus, we had a lovely week at the cottage.
Despite coronavirus, we had a lovely week at the cottage. We normally stay at the cabins and I was quite pleased I'd happened to book this cottage for a change. It was spotlessly clean which was reassuring and we felt comfortable and relaxed straight away. We were lucky with the weather and were able to sit out in the garden on several occasions which was private and full of birds. The cottage was great, much bigger than I was expecting and the furnishings were beautiful. The heating was a mystery to me but it kept the place warm. I did find the boiler disturbed my sleep though, as it turned on and off every minute all night. But I'm a light sleeper. Also, one bed was very soft and the other very hard. The soft one was extremely low, OK for us, but older people might struggle. Something nobody seems to mention is it's right next to the toilets. It was actually no issue, no smells or any horror story your mind might conjure up! The only thing is, if you like a lie in, you might get woken by the hand driers going off! (I'm an early riser so just found it amusing). We were able to get up into Scotland a few times, you're just 5 miles from the border, and dared to use the forest drive which was actually much better than we expected. We just have a normal car and with careful driving were fine, it takes about 40 mins to get to the other end. Well worth the effort as it's beautiful. All in all we had a great week at Kielder as always, and we'll definitely stay at this cottage again in future. Really lovely. Our dog loved it too! This is a great place to escape the stresses and strains of life.
This is a great place to escape the stresses and strains of life. If you love the outdoors this is just the most fantastic place to visit. So many great walks, all dog friendly, mountain bike trails and water sport activities on Kielder Water. Congratulations to to the Forestry Commission for making this such a spectacular place to explore, with lots of interesting things for youngsters to do as well. The accommodation was ideally located to take advantage of all the wonderful walks, so many on your doorstep, as well as offering a high degree of comfort. Take plenty of supplies though as there are no shops in the village and basic provisions are 4 miles away. Nonetheless, this just added to the tranquillity of the place. Would definitely recommend and looking forward to revisiting the area at a different time of year. Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo

Lovely cottage with good space, really comfy leather sofas and pleasant living area.
Lovely cottage with good space, really comfy leather sofas and pleasant living area. Everything worked well except the back bedroom doors don't open. I raised this with the owner and he is aware that this can create ventilation issues. The bathroom extractor works but quite slowly so it would help if more windows were openable. Beds comfortable and good level of amenities - mirrors, dressing table, wardrobe space etc. Kitchen is not huge and the pans were ancient (raised with owner and since replaced) but did the job for us. Cooking a family meal might be more challenging but there's a large dining table for extra prep space if required. The location is either perfect for you, if you want remote, or a pain. It was only a pain for us when we needed to drive 25 mins to Bellingham to buy logs for the fire. The Anglers Arms pub, which might normally sell logs, was closed due to the death of the owner - but I understand it will re-open soon. Other than that, you have a temporary food stand at Castle Kielder opposite the cottage for burgers, doughnuts and fish and chips on Fridays if that's your thing. The Black Cock Inn pub at Falstone village at the southern end of Kielder water is nice. The Pheasant Inn is okay for a hearty meal but expect something akin to a good school dinner. The SKy Q tv is good but there's no PIN so we couldn't watch some of the recorded progs until after 9pm - a shame on a rainy day when you are happy to veg indoors. One thing not mentioned in the promo materials is that the public loos are adjacent to the cottage. This wasn't an issue for us but the occasional use of a hand dryer was audible. Overall the gripes are small and it was a lovely place with access to tons of trails from your front door. Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo

Lovely cottage, really secure front garden and to be fair the back garden is also secure(unless you've got a determined dog like ours). Cottage had everything you wanted, warm and comfortable and lovely bathroom. Location is slightly isolated but we knew this when we booked. Walks are great, miles and miles of forest tracks, incredible vistas. If you enjoy forest and riverside walks, mountain biking or star gazing then this is the place for you. Unfortunately, we lost power at 2am on Wednesday and there was still no power at 6am. We decided to head home by 8am.The owner contacted us to say that power should be on by 10am but we had headed home by that time as there was nowhere to get a hot drink or any food. This was unfortunate and nobodys fault but did mean we could not use the bathroom or prepare any hot food or drinks.
