About this property

Elevated position, wonderful views over Dartmouth, beautiful garden

The Garden Cottage is a holiday home for all seasons, blending fresh décor with homely comforts. Just a stone's throw from the centre of Dartmouth and the waterside, its elevated position gives splendid views over the town and river from the master bedroom and the well-tended garden - a perfect spot for lunch on a sunny afternoon. Inside, feature stone walls and solid wood floors envelop you in maritime cottage charm. Plus, there's a log burner for the chillier months. Dogs are welcome, too.

Accommodation:

From the stable door entrance, the ground-floor hallway has plenty of space for coats and boots, while the exposed stonework gives a lovely cottagey feel as you arrive. The large, recently-refurbished family bathroom comes complete with a bath, separate shower, and WC. There is also a small single bedroom on the ground floor, There's also a washing machine in the cupboard under the stairs.

The first floor houses the lounge diner and kitchen, and has access to the garden. The lounge-diner is a light and airy room with dual-aspect windows and great views over the garden. The lounge area has a smart TV and soundbar, two sofas, and a wood burner. There is a dining table and chairs set into the window at the back of the room.

The well-equipped kitchen has wooden units and worktops, a fridge, an electric oven with a gas hob, and a microwave. There's also a small freezer in the hallway.

The second floor has two double bedrooms. The master bedroom has dual-aspect windows with fantastic views of the river and garden. There is a built-in wardrobe, drawers and a dressing table, as well as seating to make the most of the view.

The second bedroom has a double bed and a built-in wardrobe. There is an additional cloakroom upstairs and a WC on the landing with a large stone basin set on an oak vanity unit.

Outside:

The garden at the rear of the property overlooks the town and river and is a delightful suntrap with mature flower beds, seating areas and lawns, as well as a decked area at the top with a dining table and chairs. Dogs are welcome at The Garden Cottage, and the garden is secure with plenty of space.

Parking:

There is no parking included at The Garden Cottage, From the front door up Crowthers Hill and Jawbones, parking is unrestricted. Crowthers Hill itself is steep, as is the walk up to the parking at Jawbones Hill and the walk from the town centre, so the cottage may not be ideal for those with mobility problems. The Park & Ride at the top of town is an excellent service (buses run from spring to autumn). The cost is £5 per day and can be topped up using the Ringo app too. There is also free overnight parking.

Availability:

In the peak season, May, June, July and August, we need to keep to Saturday changeovers and a minimum stay of 7 nights. However, please do contact me with any requests you may have and we will accommodate them if possible. Out of peak season, we don't need to keep to a Friday changeover.

Comfortable cottage

Nice cottage, parking is not always ideal especially on a very steep hill. If you are taking a dog is not 100% secure, especially for a young dog.

Great base in Dartmouth

Characterful cottage which is well equipped, with views of the beautiful estuary. Good information from 'Dart Valley Cottages' with appropriately timed texts/emails. Enjoyable stay as good base to take advantage of whats on offer, please however take care to read warnings regarding the gradient of the hill location.

Beautiful and cosy cottage with stunning garden

The cottage is charming and the garden just gorgeous. Lots of different areas to relax in ( or play hide and seek). Amazing river views. The hill is memorable but then that’s the the views are so great. We had a lovely holiday. So many child and dog friendly things to do!

A gorgeous base from which to explore Dartmouth

We had a wonderful stay at the charming Garden Cottage, which lived up to its name. The garden was brilliantly designed to explore, filled with little nooks and crannies to perch for a drink and watch the steam train chugging up the river bank. Our toddler loved it. Thank you so much. The cottage itself was well kitted out with everything needed for a comfortable break, even dog bowls and treats! The only negative was pretty minor - the bedding was a bit warm for us - we struggle with anything that thick even in winter, and the heating was a bit noisy at night but was dealt with quickly and efficiently and didn't affect us too much. I would definitely recommend to others, and hope to return some time soon.

Perfectly peaceful property

This was our first stay in Dartmouth and Garden Cottage did not disappoint. The house is very well presented and the garden a very welcome bonus. The views by day and night were amazing. The location was fantastic - just a short walk to all amenities, but far enough away to be tranquil.

Cosy cottage with beautiful views

We stayed in Garden cottage for a week with our dog whilst visiting family. Very clean and comfortable cottage with accommodation over 3 floors. There is a log burner and smart tv in the cosy lounge. Kitchen is well-equipped. Beautiful garden with lovely views of river Dart and Kingswear. Dartmouth town is 5-10 minute walk away but the lane is steep. You can’t park outside the cottage, but up the road there is free, roadside parking. We loved it and would highly recommend except for those with mobility problems.

A delightful break

We enjoyed a lovely week in Dartmouth. Cottage was very comfortable & warm. Great garden and great views. The hill and parking took a little getting used too (we did know about this before our arrival), but it was great being so close to Dartmouth centre.

View from the loo!

We’ve just come home after a fantastic week at the lovely Garden Cottage, which really delivered on every front. The cottage is incredibly well presented, and has everything you need to enjoy a relaxed stay. The garden is beautiful and clearly someone’s pride and joy. However the highlight for me was the view from the loo( and master bedroom, and lounge…) which was the constant reminder that we were staying somewhere really special. The location was perfect for us, and we really made the most of both the quick stroll into the centre and the easy access to Jawbones, where the dog could stretch his legs whilst we took in the amazing view. Whilst we enjoyed the climbs up the hill it would be too much for some, especially as parking is a bit of a lottery.

A great week in Dartmouth

Just returned from a fabulous week at Garden Cottage, Dartmouth. The location was great, no issues with parking as visited out of season. The garden and views from garden were amazing. The house itself was lovely the only note would be the smell of damp in the downstairs area; 3rd bedroom and bathroom. We will look to return.

The Garden Cottage Dartmouth

Pros: -Good Central location -Beautiful, well kept garden -Good views -Good shower and bath Cons: - The property should not have been advertised as sleeping 5 people it was a 4 person property. The 3rd bedroom was constantly damp, mould on the walls and smelly so we were unable to use it. In our opinion it should have been a utility/boot room as it was not a suitable sleeping space. The duvet in that bedroom felt damp all week. -The property is no good for people with any mobility issues due to the elevated position and the steps. -Parking is difficult so we didnt use the car much - A dishwasher would have been good as on holiday you dont want to spend all the time washing up!

The Garden Cottage Dartmouth

A very comfortable cottage with a lovely Garden up a very steep hill !! You never get use to walking up the hill or the many steps in Dartmouth however not having to use the car to walk into town or explore the surrounding areas is a real bonus. Once you have unloaded the car and parked your holiday can begin. The garden was a real surprise with lots of small sitting areas and so well kept. The four of us & the dog enjoyed our week so Thank you very much.

Christmas and Birthday break

Wonderful property and garden, for us to spend as a family of 4, something a little special to celebrate 2 birthdays over the Christmas and New Year period, with the restrictions of 2020 it was ideal. We love the beach all times of the year and they did not disappoint! Thank you, would love to return and see Dartmouth in summer.

Autumn break

Four magnificent days at the end of September and a couple with wind and rain in October. A lovely, well equipped, warm and comfortable house on a steep hill in central Dartmouth. Gorgeous, tiered garden, well cared for by owners. This is a very presentable holiday house possessing a genuine feel of home from home. We loved it.

The Garden Cottage

A lovely cottage with a beautiful garden. The views are wonderful and it is very comfortable and has everything you need. I would say it was a two bedroom cottage, not a three bedroom as the third one is essentially underground. A parking permit would have been good to have.

A lovely cottage in a great location

We stayed at this cottage over the Christmas week just passed and had an excellent time. The cottage itself is very well equipped with everything you could need for a comfortable stay. We felt immediately at home here, particularly as it is so homely. The cottage is only a very short walk from the amenities in town and the steep hill gives it commanding views over the town and estuary. Adrian, the owner, is incredibly helpful and an absolute mine of information - he very kindly checked local restaurants for availability and gave some great ideas for dog walks too. All in all, a brilliant experience which we hope to repeat very soon.

A perfect holiday cottage

We had the most perfect stay at The Garden Cottage - it really was like being home from home comfort-wise, and beautifully presented and appointed throughout. The main bedroom on the 2nd floor was a particular highlight with wonderful views across the Dart River to Kingswear, as was the garden itself, which was remarkably private and sheltered, with several places to sit and relax. The living room was very comfortable and the internet TV and fast broadband speed were greatly appreciated by our two daughters (16 & 11). With a 5 minute walk down the (very steep) Crowther’s Hill to the town, the cottage’s location was extremely convenient, but also felt sufficiently remote to be a quiet refuge when required. Towels and bed linen were changed after a week and instructions for the cottage and information about Dartmouth was very comprehensive. The only slight frustration was the parking on Jawbones Hill (or lack of, possibly due to it being high season) at the top of the road. We were advised by one of the Crowther’s Hill residents that part of the problem is that boat owners frequently leave their cars on the road and go away sailing for weeks or even months at a time, which significantly reduces the amount of available spaces, and on most days there were no spaces at all. However we decided to chance it and parked on the double yellow lines at the top of Crowther’s Hill most days during our stay and fortunately never got a ticket. The positive from parking the car up here however was that we could always head up and out of the town or to Sainsbury’s via Waterpool Road, rather than having to go into the town and round the one way system.

Two lovely weeks in the heart of Dartmouth South Devon

Everything was great about our holiday cottage though the view came with one downside. It was on a very steep hill where walking, driving and parking was very difficult for us, being a couple in our seventies. It was helpful to have a car park permit given to us by the booking agents, though this wasn’t offered, we had to request it.
