About this property

Charming cottage, modern living with original features, perfect private garden

The Nook is in a truly peaceful, 'chocolate box' location. Perfect for one couple or a small family to relax in this beautiful riverside village and explore the wider South Hams. A very pretty holiday cottage, this Grade II-listed building is about 350 years old and has been lovingly renovated to a wonderful standard, combining modern living with lots of original cottage features to ensure a very comfortable stay year-round. The open-plan living area is a charming space with an exposed stone fireplace and painted beams making the cosy room feel light and airy. Upstairs the master bedroom keeps the cute cottage theme going and the second bedroom with a single bed and futon for younger families sharing. There is a private garden at the rear for alfresco dining in the summer and a log burner for chillier winters, there is also private parking for one car and the village amenities are a short walk away.

Accommodation:

The cottage can be entered from the front door on Lower Street or from the parking at the rear via the patio. The front door opens from the road into the hallway with space for coats and boots as well as a general storage cupboard. Through to the living room, a light and airy space, beautifully furnished, very much with comfort in mind. With white-washed walls, oak flooring and exposed beams to set the ambience. The lounge area is centred around the large inglenook fireplace with a wood-burning stove, two sofas and an armchair as well as a window seat. There's a TV with DVD player, with included premium TV channels (BT TV). The dining area has a prettily painted dining table and chairs.

A doorway and hatch lead through to the kitchen which overlooks the back garden. The slate-floored, shaker-style kitchen is well stocked for mealtimes, and also houses an integrated washer-dryer, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, electric oven and halogen hob, and microwave. From the kitchen, a stable door leads to the patio garden and the parking.

A traditional curved stairway leads up to the first floor from the lounge. The master bedroom maintains the cute cottagey feel and is furnished with a painted oak kingsize bed with side tables, plenty of storage space and a built-in wardrobe. The second bedroom has a single bed and a single futon.

The modern bathroom has a bath with an electric shower over, and a heated towel rail.

This cottage may not be suitable for small children or the elderly. Please call for more information.

There's central heating and a wood burner (logs are provided for winter bookings).

You're welcome to bring one small dog with you, too

Outside:

The Nook benefits from a delightful, private suntrap garden with river views - an idyllic spot to watch the sunset. This area is laid to gravel with flowerbeds and has plenty of seating.

Parking:

There is a parking space behind the cottage.

Nearby:

The village pub The Red Lion Inn is a two-minute walk up the road. The Red Lion Inn also hosts the village shop and Post Office. A 10-minute walk will take you to The Quay where you will find the Ferry Boat Inn and The Anchorstone Café as well as ferries to the National Trust's Greenway house and gardens and also Dartmouth. The closest beach is Blackpool Sands, a 10-minute drive in the nearby village of Stoke Fleming.

4 night stay
Gorgeous cottage. Very well equipped. Beds comfy. Very clean. Steep staircase to the upstairs with just a rope to hold onto, incredibly narrow driveway entrance…scratched my car badly and a dodgy tv which took a long time to figure out! Great pizza at the FBI, great coffee and cake at the Anchor cafe and also had a lovely meal of fish n chips at the Red Lion. A wonderful stay and would recommend.

Lovely cottage in peaceful location
We loved our stay at The Nook. Perfectly situated in the quieter part of Dittisham at the top of the village within the sound of the church bells. So handy to have a parking space and the garden is lovely with a view over the river. We were lucky enough to eat out most days and it was incredibly peaceful with friendly neighbours. The cottage was very clean and well equipped. The stairs are very steep so may be difficult for those with limited mobility. A great location to tour around South Devon. Would definitely recommend.

Beautiful cottage
We had a lovely time, just the two of us and the dog. Tucked away down near the river, you wouldn't want to come in a big car, because the parking is accessed by a very narrow entrance. Views are beautiful and it's so tranquil. Perfect for a relaxing few days away.

Lovely Cottage
Great cottage with everything we needed. The parking is tight, but we managed to get our Discovery in. The property is lovely, but I imagine it would be a bit of a challenge for less physically able people. Quite steep stairs and lots of steps and slopes to get to the village. All in all we had a great time and enjoyed the location. Dittisham is a tiny village and the roads to get to it are narrow. Dartmouth is a "must see" and the dog friendly ferry from the Ferry Boat Inn is a great day trip.

Fantastic little cottage
The Nook is the sweetest little cottage by the church on the quietest of lanes. So peaceful. You can glimpse the river from the back of it through the trees but otherwise it’s a quick 10 min walk down to the foreshore. Although small It’s got everything you need and a lovely little setting for table & chairs outside we had our breakfast there in the morning sun. Very cosy stay we loved it and will definitely be coming back. Very well organised and efficient team at dart valley cottages.

Loved our stay
The customer service from Dart Valley was excellent throughout and they always responded to questions. The Nook was welcoming and fully equipped. Despite being an old building the cottage was charming and comfortable with ample room for 4 people, it was also lovely to have the garden to sit outside in the sunshine. The village itself was a delight. We loved our early morning walks with the dog down to the harbour, enjoyed a boat trip to Dartmouth and some lovely evenings in the FBI pub where we were made to feel welcome. This was our first time using Dart valley cottages and we wouldn't hesitate to use them again. Thanks for a lovely holiday.

The Nook Dittisham
We had a very enjoyable stay in the The Nook cottage, which had the added benefit of off road parking and a very sunny garden. Only negatives to stop us gaving a 5 star rating was the extractor fan in bathroom did not work, also huge build of dust on bathroom lights. The internet was always droping out even when close to router. We arrived with the washing up liquid empty. We would still recommend the cottage and will book again. Martyn

6/10 Okay

Dirty upon arrival
The cottage had not been cleaned when we arrived and apparently Dart Valley Cottages have no system to check whether cleaning has been done or not. The hot water was not working and the cottage needs a thorough appraisal by the agents, things have clearly been left to drift. For example, even the agents do not seem to be aware of the correct refuse and recycling instructions. There are broken door latches, a broken glass lantern in the garden, shabby and old outdoor cushions etc. I could go on. We have stayed at this cottage before without any problems, but this time we came away disappointed.

Lovely cottage but housekeeping was a let down
The Nook is a comfortable cottage in a lovely location but attention to detail was sadly lacking. Bedding had not been changed, with dirty sheets and a previous occupant's belongings in one of the beds. This was rectified the next day. We also found dirty crockery, cups, cutlery and equipment in drawers, there were missing essential kitchen items (baking tray), and a broken bath tap. Parking and recycling instructions were unclear and / or contradictory. When you're paying hotel prices for self-catering I think you shoudn't expect these issues to arise and it was disappointing they did. Having said that, we enjoyed our stay. The village was quiet, picturesque and friendly (the Red Lion being a notable outlier here) with the whole of the lovely Dart estuary on your doorstep. My recommendation comes on the proviso that cleaning and housekeeping are improved.

Good fun.
Once we parked the car we didn’t use it again. We used the ferry boats to go to Dartmouth. Excellent.

Spacious cottage in pretty location
First thing to say is that other reviews have commented on the tight parking. The turning isn’t as bad as it first seems and there is plenty of room in the parking area itself. The cottage was lovely and well equipped. We used the ferry to get to Dartmouth. We also walked to Dartmouth and back one day. Our only gripe was that we couldn’t find the cushions for the outdoor furniture and despite emailing we didn’t get a response. Could have phoned if urgent but it wasn’t that pressing. Would also add that the property description mentions river views from the top of the garden. There are glimpses if you are standing up, but I think hedges and trees may have grown since that was written!

Nice cottage but bare minimum
Nice cottage but fairly ill equipped. You have to take everything yourself except sheets and towels. Not even any oil in kitchen. No radio in cottage and the wifi while I was there was restricted and dart valley cottages couldn’t seem to sort this out. If you want to use the log burner you will need to bring logs, firefighters etc yourself too. All felt a bit stingy which is a shame.

Great Hideaway
Cracking location with everything close by, village is fantastic with great walks and views. Cottage was lovely with pretty much all you need. Some issues were quickly sorted by the agent.

Great location and comfort
Lovely cottage, well equipped and comfortable. A problem with the heating when we arrived was swiftly sorted out by the maintenance team. Vehicle access to the village, road and the property is not the easiest but well worth these minor problems when you arrive at the Nook. The ability to access walks from the door is a great feature as is the easy access to the River Dart ferry system. The area map from the Red Lion pub/shop/post office was very handy to the walking network. We did quite a few walks around the area including one to Dartmouth, which, although fairly hard was very rewarding. Visits to nearby NT houses were good. All in all the Nook and it’s area lived up to our expectations.

Comfortable stay
We had a very comfortable stay at The Nook. Great to have dedicated parking and the sun trap garden, and perfect position for the village shop and the walk to The Ferry. Outside sun loungers need replacing urgently as they were broken, and the WiFi could be better (child lock was on which isn’t always necessary). The river views were unfortunately blocked by an overgrown hedge, but we spent a lot of time down by the water anyway. All in all a good cottage for the week but needs a bit of TLC in some areas. Would recommend the takeaway pizzas from The Ferry and a trip to The Cellar at Sharpham Vineyard for lunch and delicious wine!

Great location, just a little TLC
We really enjoyed our stay at the Nook. Just provided some constructive feedback, we found the master bed very uncomfortable. The bathroom had not been cleaned properly with a layer of dirt across the window shelf, brown specks under the toilet seat and could really do with an update. The shower screen does not fit properly either resulting in a puddle on the floor after each shower. It may be worth putting bunk beds in the small bedroom to attract families of 4 or those with bigger children. The cottage is well equipped as mentioned above we did enjoy our stay.

Relaxing in The Nook
Enjoyed our stay at this sweet cottage. access for parking at the back of the property is very narrow and some larger cars might have difficulty. The cottage was clean with a nice welcoming pack and new garden furniture. The boiler in the roof above the small bedroom seemed to fire frequently in the night. Good exercise in climbing the hill to the Red Lion Pub ! Overall a lovely stay.

Cleanliness on arrival!
In general had a lovely holiday in a beautiful cottage and surroundings......not sure if it was down to covid regs but upon arrival, we didn't mind having to find bedding and put it on beds but then had to set about cleaning bathroom as toilet was left dirty and surfaces not clean!! After a long journey.....was a bit of a surprise!! Otherwise, the lady who took my booking was very helpful and friendly and have used Dart Valley cottages twice before staying in Dittisham, which we like very much. Regards, Diane T

THe Nook
The Nook is a lovely cottage and this was the second stay at the Nook. Beautiful views of the dart in the garden. The Red Lion is well stocked for groceries. F B I a must when fully opened take away food only with the current restrictions . Anchorstone great but book well in advance. Have stayed with Dart Vally Cottages on several times and customer service is excellent. Will be back to beautiful Dittisham and the Nook again

Beautiful cottage, great location, thoroughly recommend
We had a fabulous break down in Dittisham. The cottage was lovely, decorated in muted tones & with a small back garden/ terrace with the most stunning views & sun lit for much of the day. Coffee out there with the paper was heavenly. Minor gripes that won’t deter us from booking again: The halogen hob needs decent pans, the lack of these made cooking more of a chore. Also limited oven trays & no large lidded casserole dishes. As little availability to eat out, better cookware would have been appreciated. Salt, pepper & olive oil supplies would have been a nice gesture (but brought our own as knew I had to do lots of cooking). Couldn’t find a folder with welcome info, instructions, advice etc. Would have been nice to know how to alter the heating. One light bulb not working on arrival (wall lamp in dining area) Bathroom tap had a bit missing, made turning off the hot tap challenging Dust under the bedroom radiator, in a hard to reach place, I dropped something so noticed this, otherwise very clean & v sensible anti-covid air transmission precautions TV system old, not easy to switch on & to watch a dvd you need to connect the player with the sole hdmi cable WiFi restrictions don’t allow Twitter or Garmin or Strava & signal not great, but we are in a village down a hill I’m not trying to be picky, we loved our break, staff contact at Dart Valley Cottages was always super helpful & we had a fabulous stay, just minor details to create utter perfection
