Family break in East Portlemouth

We had an excellent stay in Catnip cottage. The property is beautifully presented and in a fantastic location, close to the beaches and foot ferry to Salcombe. The new village farm cafe is a great addition to the village and a short walk up the hill. We will definitely return

Lovely Home - Perfect Location

We didn't want to leave and actually booked an extra night whilst there. The house is lovely and spacious with everything you could need, the teenagers loved the pool table and projector screen TV. The hot tub was the highlight and perfect to relax in after the long country walks - even in December!! The underfloor heating kept the whole house amazingly warm. Perfect location within walking distance of the ferry over to Salcombe, the beaches and SW Coast Path - we didn't use the car during our 5 day stay at all. We cannot fault this property at all and will definitely be returning.

A fabulous house in a great location

There are very few houses I would ever actually want to go back to, however, Catnip House is one of those. Eileen was quick to respond to any queries or problems that we had and resolved all of them. The house was in a lovely location, very private with amazing views up the river. There was great outside space with a wonderful hot tub and BBQ, which even in October was great to use. Inside the house was really well equipped without being cluttered. I felt confident that the house could therefore be thoroughly cleaned between guests because the surfaces and the floor area were clear. The kitchen had everything that we needed. The whole family really loved the projector and screen for watching films in the evening and the indoor pool table. We stayed as a family of four sure to the COViD restrictions but this would be the ideal house for two families with children of any age.

Catnip is the house that keeps on giving

We stayed at Catnip House in July. Grandparents (us!), 4 adults and five children ranging from 12 to 4, 11 of us in total. We stayed in the bedroom downstairs whilst our family and grandchildren all stayed upstairs. What a success that was for starters. There is so much to entertain all, Pool, ping pong, darts - massive hit, cinema screen which only came out once as littlies found the outside football table. Short walk to safe little coves and the ferry across to Salcombe. Ice cream and coffee stop on the way. Very close to us was a delicious takeaway ranging from sea bass to sausage and chips for children, we used this twice, excellent. We cannot fault this house and a very generous welcome pack awaited us on arrival, thank you. Eileen was so helpful and communicative throughout and on a sad departure. Beds very comfortable and nice pillows. Family left and friends arrived and we explored nearby Devon and a pleasure to come back and have an evening dip in the hot tub. Would we come back? In a heartbeat and will too!! If you are unsure, don’t be, you will not be disappointed.

It’s a great place for families and a lot of thought has gone into the property

We had a great week and would highly recommend the property for up to 6 adults and 5 children. We were 5 adults and 1 child and there was plenty of room. Great location, good parking and lots of games to keep everyone entertained.

A truly amazing stay to celebrate the New Year!

My family and I stayed at the property over New Year and had a fantastic time. The house certainly has a wow factor and we had everything we could possible need for a great few days. The location is incredible being 10 minutes walk to the ferry (which takes 1-2 minutes to Salcombe) and lots to see and do nearby. We would love to stay again, but this time seeing what it is like in the summer.

Family Trip

Great house, lovely view over the Estuary and very handy 3 parking spaces. The property is very well appointed with great spaces for our multi generation group. Hot tub was great fun for the teenagers and the big screen in the upstairs lounge was perfect for a Sunday afternoon movie. We’d definitely visit again.

Great holiday!

Fantastic, roomy, and well equipped property for large families or groups of friends. Large lounge, with great natural light and with amazing cinema screen and pool table. Peaceful location, with a perfect beach within easy walking distance, as well as the stunning coast path for walks. Five minutes walk to the convenient passenger ferries which run constantly back and forth to Salcombe town-a two minute boat trip. The owner was very friendly and responsive.

Location, Location Location

Spacious property, well equipped, easy walk to small sandy beaches nearby even for my three year old granddaughter. Plenty of games in house and gardens such as table football, snooker and table tennis plus a cinema screen TV, smaller tv room and the hot tub on the terrace. All this with parking and views and easy access to Salcombe via the ferry a few minutes walk away. Great place to stay and excellent communications with the owner. Thoroughly recommend a stay here with family or friends.

Great family stay

We had a great stay at Catnip. The house is well set up with lovely garden and good games room upstairs. Easy walk to the beach and the ferry to Salcombe. Timing the tides on the local roads takes some thinking, but adds to the charm. Would recommend for large or 2 families looking to get to a beautiful part of the country.

Wonderful house in a perfect setting

Catnip is a gorgeous house with lovely views. It was perfect for our family holiday. The house is beautifully decorated and the owner has really thought of everything. Lovely gardens with lots of areas to relax in. Beautiful beaches just a ten minute walk away and also the ferry to take you over to Salcombe. In the evening a water taxi is available. The house is a few minutes walk away from the Salcombe Paddleboarding, I thoroughly recommend a lesson with these guys as we all had such fun and it is not as hard as it looks!! Eileen the owner is very helpful and gave lots of local recommendations and information about the house. Thank you for the lovely touches Eileen of cakes from the gorgeous Bake House in Salcombe and the wine and milk. We all loved our holiday at Catnip and can't wait to stay again.

Sophisticated stay for friends

Beautifully decorated and well equipped for a big group of friends or family, Catnip worked well even in mixed weather. A big dining table, places to eat outside in a lovely garden, plenty of bathrooms, comfy beds and big sofas to lounge on, all made things very easy. Having a hot tub, table tennis and hammocks was lovely and particularly the pool table was very popular with the teens/young adults. The owners were very helpful and communicative. We know the area very well and keep a dory and dinghies here, so it was very helpful to be so close to the water. All in all, we would love to stay again.

A hidden treasure with everything you need for a family break!

This property ticked every box for a family of 9 to spend quality time together. A beautiful house with panoramic views that was spotless on arrival. The owner had really thought of everything. A fully functional kitchen with a huge dining table for us all to enjoy meals together. The snug downstairs was a great place for the children to enjoy their games and relax. We did bring the xbox but a wii was provided and so many board games, the children were kept amused all weekend. Upstairs you had 4 bedrooms an ensuite and a bathroom and the living space had a pool table and a kitchenette. No need to keep going downstairs to make drinks and the extra fridge kept the wine and beers cool whilst we watched films on the giant projector! The views from here are stunning! The master bedroom is located downstairs with floor to ceiling windows and a huge ensuite that also links to a utility room with washing machine and dryer. The garden is tiered and although we didn't use it during our stay i'm sure it would be lovely to sit out in the summer. The hot tub was very clean and heated for our arrival. The property even has an outside shower to wash the dog after beach walks and also has a great enclosed area for coats and shoes etc. The ferry to Salcombe is only a 10 minute walk which we used on a daily basis. We also walked miles along the sandy beaches on the East Portlemouth side. Eileen the owner answered any questions prior to our stay and during and was so helpful with recommendations on restaurants and places to visit. We will definitely be returning to this property in the near future.

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with the area because it is so beautiful, nestled in wonderful countryside yet beside the water. It is lovely to arrive, park up the car and walk down to the beaches or local pubs or get the ferry over to Salcombe for a bit of shopping without ever using the car for your entire holiday.
South Pool with it's wonderful Millbrook Inn is half an hours walk from the house and the lovely Pigs Nose Inn at East Prawle is a short drive from the house. There are plenty of things to do with children near by - horse riding, craft cafe in Salcombe, water sports etc.

What makes this property unique

The house is minutes from lovely golden beaches such as Mill Bay and on the South West Coastal path yet walking distance to the regular, all year round passenger ferry service from East Portlemouth ferry steps to Salcombe Ferry Inn.
On weekends and bank holidays it runs from 8:30am too 7pm. Weekdays 0700am to 7pm. Cost £1.60 each way. There is also a water taxi which runs on the hour up to 10pm from Salcombe to East Portlemouth - weather dependent. £1:80 single adult fare. The house is also near lots of great pubs and restaurants - for example - Millbrook Inn in South Pool/Pigs Nose in East Prawle, Gara Rock.
