40th BDay Friends Getaway

12 of us drove out from Pittsburgh to celebrate the 40th birthday of a close friend. The property was spectacular and was conveniently located close to Seven Springs. The kitchen was perfect for cooking dinner for a big group, the dining room had a great ambiance for facilitating dinner-time conversations, and the double fireplace in the living room kept our entire group cozy through the cold nights. Will definitely be staying here again.

The Best Mountain Getaway!

We have stayed at this property a few times now and it always exceeds our expectations. The home is absolutely gorgeous, the amenities are top notch, and the property owners could not be nicer to deal with. We have been lucky enough to get snow each time we visited and the real working fireplaces make for the most amazing winter getaway. However, we wouldn’t hesitate renting this beautiful home any time of the year! If you’re looking for a perfect mountain stay, don’t hesitate and book this home!

Step back in time

This historic brick farmhouse is one of the best VRBO properties we’ve ever booked. It has been restored to an authentic Central Pennsylvania delight. The wood floors gleam, the kitchen is fully stocked with housewares, the three bathrooms were spotless and in perfect working order. Beautiful, comfortable beds. There were only three of us, but could have easily included several more. We highly recommend this place!

Incredible historical home with all the modern conveniences!

We stayed as a family of 4 for a ski weekend and had an incredible time! The house is absolutely lovely, with charming touches and the historical elements intact but modernized throughout. The kitchen has everything you could need (who has actual non-stick pans that are still non-stick in a VRBO?!?!?), the beds were very comfortable, and the living room with fireplaces and library were great places to watch a movie together or grab a quiet place to read. The hosts were excellent at communication, and it was very easy to check in. All in all, we will definitely stay here again next time we go skiing at Seven Springs.

Amazing

Perfect stay for a weekend ski and snowboard getaway to Seven Springs. The home was very clean, the kitchen was great for prepping and making meals. Plenty of rooms and bathrooms for all of us. The fireplaces were wonderful, we were there in single digit weather and it was so therapeutic to come home to a warm fire. The house has a lot of character, I loved reading the history connected to the homestead. The library was my favorite room. Definitely want to return next winter. Thank you!

We Had to Come Back

Our family gathers each year for a ski weekend at Hidden Valley. Our grandchildren love spending family time and getting on the slopes. We stayed at the Kooser-Ankney Homestead last year and loved it. The charm, the wonderful restoration of this 1832 farmhouse, the wood burning fireplaces and especially the helpfulness of Chris and Dawn throughout our stay was exceptional. We could not have asked for anything better. We plan to be back to make more memories.

Thoughtfully renovated spacious house with good views

Our two families, including four 2 - 6 yr old kids, loved our stay at Chris and Dawn's lovingly renovated farmhouse, set in the rolling hills with views from seemingly every window. The location was great to access skiing at 7 Springs and Hidden Valley, both 15 - 25 minutes easy drive away. We very much hope to return. The house is spacious with ample room for us and our belongings. The house has multiple spaces from two comfortable lounge/TV rooms to a lovely large and very well stocked kitchen to an expansive dining table and three welcoming bedrooms. The house sits pleasantly in farmland with a 50 AMP / 240 volt EV charger at the barn (thank you Chris and Dawn for this!). The house does front onto a reasonably fast road - no noise problems, but does mean keeping an eye on the kids as they explore the tire swing and rocking horses outside. Also, be ready to ask for help getting the TVs to give you want you want as the systems were a little beyond us (or else the batteries in the remotes were flat).

Just when you thought it couldn't get better . . .

it does! This is the third year in a row friends and I have gotten together for a long weekend at this beautiful property. As mentioned in past reviews, the kitchen has everything you need (including aluminum foil, storage bags, little corks to put in your wine bottle if you don't finish it, the attention to detail is incredible), there is plenty of space for everyone, and the historic renovation is so well done. Since our visit in 2021 the property has had some updates--new living room furniture (reclining sectionals with plug ins for your phone, you never have to get up!), floors refinished, new paint, new fixtures in places, some new tiling. A truly great refresh to a place that was already clean and inviting. Outside even has a couple of animals on big springs that go back and forth (you know it when you see it) for kids to ride on. The multiple fireplaces are always welcome for our November visit and the owners even send someone to show you how to operate the flues. Our fireplace guide even made the living room and dining room fires for us! The location is great, views of rolling hills and farmland from every window, and you are near Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, and several state parks. You will not be disappointed if you rent this house.

Great Property in a Great Location

We had a wonderful time with our extended family at this property. Four kids and four adults easily fit in this home with space to spare. The 16 acres also let the kids spend tons of time outside exploring. We would highly recommend this property to others. It's a classic farmhouse, beautifully restored and up to date.

Knowing full well how perfect this property is for our yearly gathering of friends, we always anticipate that the accommodations here will be excellent. Then, once we arrive we are always impressed with the latest renovation or newest amenity provided. Every year, something new grabs our attention and impresses upon us how much care and attention the owners pay to providing a top notch experience. Thank you Chris and family for allowing us to continue spending time at your property year after year. See you again in 2023

An Awesome Getaway

We rented this property over Memorial Day weekend with friends and family. Between the firepit, large lawn, and impressive house, it was a great place to get together and enjoy the long weekend. The house itself is spacious and has so much history while being recently updated with all sorts of modern amenities. We loved reading about the history of the property as much as we enjoyed playing Frisbee on the lawn, relaxing on the 2nd floor deck, and watch movies in the living room. Not to mention, the owners were very communicative and helpful in the lead up to our arrival. All in all, I'd highly recommend it for anyone looking for a rental in the area to get away to.

Fun Ski Weekend

I rented this house for a family ski weekend with our kids and their significant others. The house is close to Seven Springs and was more than enough room for us. We especially enjoyed the fireplaces and the long dining table. The hosts were very helpful and quick to respond to questions. We would stay here again.

Historic Restoration Hideaway

We spent a wonderful weekend in a historic farmhouse built in the early 1800s. The restoration is amazing as we enjoyed the large rooms, several wood burning fireplaces, country setting and all the amenities you need for a family gathering. It is close to where we went skiing. The hosts were great to work with and answered every question quickly. It’s a charming place to stay.

Unmatched Historic Mountain Experience

We’re coming off of our 3rd visit to this property. Staying at this incredible home is consistently the highlight of our year. Dawn & Chris could not be nicer people and their personal touches shine through in every corner of this house. When you’re here, you feel like it’s your own home and you want to treat it as such. This year there were quite a few upgrades to the furniture, bathrooms and some beautiful railings installed on the exterior. All so well done. This place has all the modern conveniences without sacrificing the historic value of the residence. Every time we bring someone new with us, they are consistently in awe, and can’t wait to join us again. Next year can’t come soon enough. If you’re lucky enough to rent this place, please treat it with respect so we can keep coming back too. Thank you!!!

Our second year and it was just as good

We are five friends who have gotten together for a weekend away for the last 21 years. This is our second year at this Somerset property and we will be back again. Lots of room for us to be together, fireplaces everywhere, a dining room perfect for long meals and great conversation. The house has everything you need from bedding to aluminum foil, you don't need to bring a thing. See my review from early October 2020 for full details. Just know you won't be disappointed.

THE BEST FARMHOUSE IN PA!!

We stayed in this amazing farmhouse as we attending and participated in the Flight 93 Memorial 9/11 Observance Ceremony (20th). We hosted a reception at the farmhouse that contained multiple compliments regarding the house, its history and charm. There was plenty of room for our family of 4, in-laws (2), and sister's family (3). If I could arrange a vacation each year to this house, I would. We can't wait to visit it again. The owners communicated with us immediately when we had questions and directed us to local contacts and organizations we needed. You cannot go wrong with this charming farmhouse!!!!

Another Amazing Stay

This was our third year in a row staying at this amazing venue. Everything about the Koozer-Ankney Homestead welcomes you in with the perfect blend of historic significance and modern amenity. The owners have paid special attention to all aspects of what makes your stay comfortable and convenient. They are immediately available with answers to any questions that arise and often find a way to accommodate special requests when given reasonable notice. Three years in a row with no end in sight. About the host

Hosted by Chris Strasser

Host profile image
We have loved living in this home with family and friends for more than two decades. I served in the U.S. Navy and continue to work in the Washington DC area. My wife was previously a professor at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA, but in 2014 joined the faculty at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA. Thus, we are no longer able to live full-time here and look forward to sharing our home with others. We have wonderful property managers and neighbors who provide support to us and our guests.

Why they chose this property

My wife was born in Western PA, so when a job opportunity presented itself in the region we moved to be closer to family. This was the only property that we scheduled an appointment to view and, even though it needed extensive renovations, we simply loved the historic character of the home. Over a decade, the infrastructure was gutted, the wood floors and fireplaces were restored and a new kitchen and bathrooms were built. We are now working to restore the historic bank barn. Our greatest joy is when people visit the property for the first time and tell us that they immediately feel at home. It is indeed a very special place to build memories that will last a lifetime.
