You just won't want to leave!: Our guests comment;
Amalfi is a super family home from home, set in a stunning location with the most amazing views. The house itself catered very comfortably for the 8 in our party (4 children under 10) and was well kitted out with lots of home comforts. There was plenty information leaflets regarding the surrounding areas, with loads to do. We were more than happy to sit on the terrace and watch the whales in the bay though! Sunset or sunrise I don't think I could ever get fed up of the view. All in all we had an fabulous holiday made that way due to the comfort and homely feel of Amalfi. Thank you! Lynn Robertson (Scotland) October 2007.
We had a great time at Amalfi, it was well equipped and in a brilliant location for our kids and the beach. The cafe did wonderful lunches. We spent time looking around the area and particulary enjoyed walking on the mountain and swimming with the penquins. We thoroughly recommend a holiday at Amalfi. Sarah Gates. November 2007.

About us: Amalfi is a family home not just a holiday rental house. We have both a local agent who oversees all our bookings to a high standard . The grounds are carefully tended by our gardener and we ask our guests to feel free to water during hot weather. Because of the water shortage we have two huge rain water tanks. Gordon is an Architect and I am a teacher, Amalfi is our second home. We live in London with our 2 sons. We all miss Amalfi terribly and keep with us memories of meals on the stoep with friends. Mornings waking to the sun and the sound of the sea. I could go on..... and on! We hope you will see for yourselves and we are more than happy to answer any queries you might have. Best wishes, Judi Jefferys

Family Christmas at Amalfi
We had a fantastic time at Amalfi. The property is situated in a spectacular location overlooking the bay at Fish Hoek. Probably the best located house in the town. We thoroughly enjoyed basking in the view of the bay from morning to night. The old family home was perfect for our own family of five. It was well kitted out with the full range of most things you could hope for, making you feel at ease. Judi (the owner) had arranged for a Christmas tree to be there for us over the festive period so writing letters to Santa and leaving a mince pie, a carrot and a glass of Van der Hum by the fireplace was natural. Cape Town is within comfortable driving distance, allowing us to explore the full range of what the city has to offer then getting away from it too back in Fish Hoek. The closer areas of Kalk Bay and Simons Town both have lots to offer. It’s a great place and I recommend it to you.

Exceptional view and comfortable home.
We loved staying at Amalfi, the view was brilliant and the house is wonderful and spacious. We spent a lot of time on the verandah. All the rooms were a good size and the kitchen was well equipped. We enjoyed walking down to the beach and the shops were easy to access. Thank you!

Lovely house, great location
We really enjoyed our stay at Amalfi. The house was like a home from home; it had everything you could possibly need. The views were spectacular and we spent many hours gazing over the bay. We were able to visit many different places, from the V&A waterfront to Table Mountain, Cape Point, Chapmans Peak, Spier Winery and other wine estates as well as strawberry picking and seeing the penguins at Boulder Beach. All were in easy travelling distance of 30-40 minutes. Although we visited during the terrible drought and water restrictions were in place, this did not hamper our stay at all. We had a great time and would recommend Amalfi.

perfect place to relax after 6 days of Safari
My family of 5 (3 adults and 2 teens) stayed at Amalfi for only 4 nights after 6 very busy days on Safari in the Eastern Cape. Everything went smoothly from the time I made the booking to when we met Melissa to check us in. The home is perfectly located just outside the hustle and bustle of Cape Town, but still within an hour for day trips in. It is a very short drive to Simons Town and Boulders Beach to see the penguins. We "Uber'd" into the Constantia Wine region one day for some wine tasting when other family members had the car, wasn't too expensive either. The home has plenty of space, but honestly, I think we spent most of our time sitting on the porch overlooking Fish Hoek Bay enjoying the ocean breezes. Fish Hoek is easily accessible via the "stairs" if you don't want to drive and try finding a parking space. Plenty of restaurants to choose from in town and a couple of grocery stores as well. I highly recommend Amalfi for your next vacation! I would definitely stay here again if/when my travels take me back to beautiful South Africa. Thank you for sharing your home with us.

Vacation Home in Fish Hoek, South Africa
Our family of 6 (2 adults, 4 older teens) in January 2017. The house and grounds are exactly as described. The owners of the home were easy to communicate with and very accommodating. The on site house manager was prompt and very helpful. The house is older but is clean and functional. The home is secure and in a good area and access is easy. From here we were able to easily travel throughout the Cape Town area quickly. The views from the house are spectacular. Whether morning or evening, you will enjoy the stunning views. The only minor problem that we experienced was in getting the clothes washing machine to work properly. We were not familiar with the brand of machine and could not find the instruction book. This was just a minor issue and did not affect the quality of our stay. Without hesitation I would book this house again for our family.

Amalfi review
We enjoyed our stay here. There are 48 steps from the street to the house and another 200 down to the beach so doing that twice a day was great exercise. The young boys loved the beach and went into the water with their boogey boards despite how cold it was. They collected over 100 shells to bring home. The house worked out fine for the six of us - there were several sitting rooms where people could hide away to read. The manager, Melissa, was very helpful with laundry and took it to the laundromat for us. They keys to the gate and the house were a pain as they were very difficult to use and unlock doors.

Fantastic views
Our family stayed at Amalfi in December 2014 for a week. There were 6 of us, myself, my husband, my mother, our 19, 23 and 7 year old! We all loved it. The gardens were beautiful and the view from the front patio was fantastic. We spent most of the daylight hours we were home, sitting on the patio, and had breakfast out there every morning. We felt like we had been welcomed into someone's well loved family home and we were all very comfortable. We enjoyed our walks down to the beach and found the beach very safe for swimming. There was a playground for our 7 year old and the beach had a lovely community atmosphere. (the stairs back up from the beach were manageable for all of us-though I did slow down a little at the end) but if someone needed to drive, there was plenty of parking and a decent little restaurant at the beach. We were in a perfect location to explore Boulder's Beach where our son and daughter loved the penguins. It was a beautiful drive to Cape Point for great hiking and more spectacular views. We had the most fantastic picnic at Cape Point winery in Nordhoek at their Thursday night community market, watching the sunset and listening to Christmas music! The excellent food and wine soon made us forget the winter we had left in Canada! We took the train from Fish Hoek beach to St. James to enjoy the tidal pool and the restaurants of Kalk bay (a very short train ride as we found parking in Kalk bay pretty hard to come by in the high season). It was also a short drive to Muizenburg beach. Our week there went by too quickly, we were in South Africa for almost a month (except the two university kids) and my mother kept saying how she wished we had been able to spend the whole time in Fish Hoek sitting on the patio at Amalfi looking at the view of the beach. On a more practical note, the house and photos were exactly as had been represented, there were no surprises. My 74 year old mother had no problem with the well planned stairs from the street to the house (or the beach for that matter), manageable for most people though not with mobility issues. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen well equipped, the house cheerful with art. Upon arrival, the very pleasant young woman who greeted us saw that the television cable was not working and arranged for it to be fixed the next morning. Our queries to the owners were immediately answered and all financial transactions went smoothly and safely. We loved our stay there and often think about it.

Lovely family home in a spectacular spot!
Amalfi's front yard garden is an absolutely idyllic spot to both begin (with a cup of coffee) and end your days (with a glass of fine SA wine) in Cape Town. Our family of six (four teenage boys) enjoyed a wonderful Christmas and New Year's holiday at Amalfi in 2014/15. This is a family home and it has all the comforts of it -- the kitchen is stocked with all the equipment you need to prepare home cooked (including braai) meals, if that's what you want to do. If you prefer to eat out, there are terrific restaurants in nearby Simonstown and Kalk Bay, and a couple of good solid choices in Fish Hoek itself. The beach -- which is accessible via a set of stairs that connects Hillside Rd to the main drag -- is a very safe, comfortable spot for family beach time; and, is home to a couple of restaurants for meals and a take-away counter for those who don't feel like packing a picnic lunch. We used Amalfi as our home base and explored Boulders, Cape of Good Hope, Kirstenbosch Gardens, the Waterfront, Table Mountain, Noordhoek and the wine country. It seems that all the must-do tourist spots are just "about 40 mins away" (including the airport). Having stayed in Fish Hoek (as well as other spots like Waterfront, Stellenbosch and Camps Bay) a number of times, I could feel myself smiling and physically relaxing simply by entering the town of Fish Hoek. The views from Amalfi are truly spectacular and the murmur of children playing at the beach along with the sound of the waves was a lovely lullaby each night. One friend who stayed nearby noted that she was bothered by the sound of the train that passes periodically, but we didn't mind it one bit; we thought it added to the charm. Fish Hoek is not as busy or "happening" as some other parts of CT. But, that's what we love about it. It's accessible to everything that's happening, but it's a quiet retreat from all the hubbub, too. It's also worth mentioning the really beautiful artwork that adorns this older, classic SA home. And, the property managers were totally responsive to the few little hiccups that we encountered along the way (nothing major; just typical little stuff associated with an older home). We absolutely loved our stay at Amalfi and hope to return again (and again)!

Perfect dream holiday home! We'll be back!
I am flabbergasted to read the recent negative review in respect of this lovely house and the reviewers unhappy stay. Not one to write reviews usually, I felt I couldn't let this one go without having my say. We had the most wonderful, memorable holiday in October 2013 and fell in love with Cape Town as well as Amalfi. Nowhere have I been with such magnificent views, such a well equipped, comfortable house which was very clean and generally in good order. I wasn't aware of any of the problems this reviewer mentioned. The owners were very attentive, in touch by email before and after, to make sure our holiday went well. I do feel they deserve some credit for their effort in providing a wonderful holiday home from home. Manchester

Not clean or well-maintained
I must sadly report that this was by far the most disappointing vacation rental of the many I have had the privilege to experience worldwide. While there is nothing patently untrue in the house description above, the write-up leaves out two very important overriding negative aspects of this rental: (1) it is, to put it nicely, NOT clean (mold, gummy dirt, dust everywhere, old moldy coffee grounds in coffee pot, chronically backed up kitchen sink drain etc) and (2) it is in disrepair with many non-functional items such as the alarm (dead, no power), a very finicky ancient toilet, some very old finicky door locks and some frank safety hazards for children (broken tile on edge of verandah, broken chair, broken kitchen drawer etc). We spent way too much time cleaning and dealing with the problems above. The owners showed no interest in these matters other than a very perfunctory one-sentence email stating "thank you for your feedback" so I suspect there will be no attention to these issues. Thus I feel compelled to warn others of the poor condition of this house which is decidedly not conveyed in the write-up. That said, the house is large enough for 8 and the verandah view is indeed quite nice. And Fishhoek is an excellent location for visits around the Cape (we visited several lovely coastal towns, Stellenbosch wine country, and Cape Point with ease.) This is the first negative review I have ever written, and I do feel it is the right thing to do so as to make sure prospective vacationers know what they are getting into.

About the host

Host profile image
Amalfi has been in our family for the last 40 years. It was very loved by my husband and his brother who grew up there. We bought the House from Gordon's parents 8 years ago and undertook a 'revamp', Gordon is an Architect but was also sensitive to keeping the integrity of the house intact. Gordon's parents still live in Fish Hoek village and do occasionally drive up the mountainside to 'boss the gardeners around'! They are quite frail now at 92 and 94 respectively! We live in London and Gordon's brother and family Australia but we do try to use the house ourselves with our own families a couple of times a year. We have a wonderful local agent who is our eyes and ears and who manages the house and all our various lets with diligence.

Why they chose this property

Why this property? What a difficult question, I really think our guest book and letters and emails from past visitors sums it up. Amalfi although not high end luxury ( which is why we don't charge high end prices!) is like a 'home from home.' Perfect for large family get togethers. We try to provide everything you would need at home to make this happen. ( what's worse than a rented house with the meanest minimum of utensils etc!?) The veranda is the heart of the house and all our guests report a love of sitting out there, eating, drinking, reading or just gazing at the ever changing vista below. It truly is absolutely wind free! The gardens are lovely, stepped and tropical. There are many ferns and palms unique to the garden. My brother in law is a horticulturalist and brought many plants in as seeds from travels into the rain forests of Australia. Fish Hoek is a real village, not a tourist destination although the beach is a world beater with a wide sandy beach that shelves hardly at all.

What makes this property unique

Amalfi is convenient for many reasons. Near to Fish Hoek beach which is brilliant for children. You can walk down or drive and park easily making it convenient for families with babies wanting to spend parts of the day on the beach and then nip home for baby sleeps etc, near for shopping too. The house is quiet, it is also very safe there being high personal house security as well as a very active Neighbourhood watch. It's positioning makes it extra safe, built into the hillside with no public access other than the main gate. Amalfi is within easy reach of all that the Cape has to offer without being part of the 'tourist crazyness'' often experienced on the city bowl side of Cape Town. Lastly, the sea water is warmer on this side!
We obviously adore Amalfi as already stated , it was my husband's family home so we are very partisan! For me the magic of Amalfi is in its position. Nestled above the beach on the hillside, while taking our daily morning walk on the beach I turn at the end of the beach and look back and there it is, in the morning sun, or waking to hear the waves and emerging onto the balcony from our bedroom to look down at the beach and marvel at how early South Africans GO to the beach?! Not to mention the swimmers who swim as a group at 6 am right through the year. Brrrrr! I love when we come home at night and walk up through the garden with all the night time flower scents to emerge on the veranda and turn to look out over the twinkling lights of Fish Hoek looking like fairyland and out to sea with the sparkling glittering wave tops......... Yes I really miss Amalfi don't I!
