Within 30 minutes there are literally dozens of specialty vineyards and the fabulous orchards of the fruit bowl of Hawkes Bay round Havelock North & Hastings.
The Blackhouse is well located for regional events, Big Band performances, The Mission Concert, Vineyard Concerts, Opera at the Townhall, Horse of the Year (grazing available on request ) and many, many more events.

A home away from home
It was lovely to be back in Waipawa. The home was comfortable and perfect for our family. The hosts welcomed us, there was fresh eggs from their chooks and they gave us some lovely homegrown rhubarb when we left. The beds were very comfortable, beautiful art work and magnificent views of Waipawa.

Eco friendly
Loved the eco friendly environment with the chickens and the orchard. House was really clean and homely. Great communication with the host. Just a wee bit of maintenance required as the overgrown trees up the driveway scratched the car and three of our group injured toes and a knee on the slippery deck and broken concrete. Washing machine and heat pump could do with updating as they don’t work very well. Over than that a really great stay and would recommend to others.

Mixed
House was lovely, with a nice layout and well presented (if somewhat dated), cleaning was ok the daughter found ants in her bed so was a little paranoid and we found crumbs and a peanut on the same bedroom floor. The fridge was scary and felt like it would fall on you each time you opened it. Hosts seemed nice on arrival, however there were too many rule - only take a 3 min shower, wash your hair in the basin, limit your electricity, etc. Our payment confirmation and the reason we booked was a 11am check out (as I hate being rushed in self catering environments where you have to pack up everything not just your clothes like in a hotel), however we had a knock at the door at 9:30am then were frog marched out at 10:30am. Then when I questioned this I was abruptly told check out was 10am and it was showing in the book! Not a great experience to end your trip on and surely regardless of a book left in the house for God knows how long my booking confirmation should take precedence as this is what I paid for. Spa had a beautiful setting but was a walk from the house and right next to the hosts house which just felt awkward as you had to walk right passed there living space to use it. Kids (adults) used it a few times but I only used it once as didn't feel comfortable. We had a lovely stay in the Hawkes Bay but would likely chose different accommodation next time.

Great weekend escape
A group of 8 of us stayed here for a weekend escape, and visited some of the wineries in the Hawke's Bay. The place was very cosy and fit us all comfortably. Johanna and Andrew were easy to communicate with and were very hospitable, making sure we had what we needed, and offering advice on spots to check out in the area. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We Live on the property and enjoy meeting guests from all walks of life.
We are a semi retired couple, a house and landscape restoration architect and structural engineer. We are passionate about old houses and gardens. We have travelled widely and enjoy meeting people.

Why they chose this property

We discovered this property by chance in 2017, bought it and began work converting it from a rundown 1980's house and farmlet of 3 ha into a rural destination homestay, we have renamed the property King's Ridge Gardens and the original house The Blackhouse. We have since moved two historic houses onto the property, (Anniversary Cottage 1860 and The Ridge House a 1900's villa) we have restored the cottage and are in the process of renovating and making the villa our home. In 2021 we will launch The Studio For Creative Inquiry in our specially built studio, offering live in courses in landscaping, drawing & painting, hand painted furniture, local geology and exploring the night sky. Our spare time is devoted to creating a large country garden on the property.
